# Session 2026-04-20 — ARC typology publication day

Today is Kai's 9-months-in-belly + 9-months-on-belly day. Steward intended to publish a piece for him. The piece itself drove the typology spec forward; both ended up shipping together.

## Past — what we did

### Wake-up + opening orientation

Wake-up oriented to the typology spec pulling thread from yesterday's session — Meditation glyph as the first unlocked decision. Steward pivoted: shared a piece he'd written for Kai's nine-month day and wanted published today. *"I want to publish it today as a reverence to him. It is important."*

The Kai piece (a meditation on attention, intention, agenda — éveil/sommeil arc) became today's test case. Reading it forced sharper definitions; sharper definitions forced spec decisions; spec decisions enabled publication. The day worked itself.

### Meditation defined verbatim (steward articulation)

> *"Meditations always have an object, and we pose attention upon the object to root ourselves in the present moment in order to observe."*

This sentence is load-bearing for §1 of the typology spec. It distinguishes Meditation from Observation (which is *of* the seen thing) and Essay (which argues): Meditation is *through* the seen thing toward what surfaces from rooted attention.

### Reverie surfaced as the 11th type (genuine, not invented)

Three converging signals:

1. Two existing pieces in the corpus explicitly name "reverie" while classed as Observation: Heliotrope (*"Thus was my reverie in that moment."*), Graffiti Girl (*"the world melted away as I drifted into reverie. Then, as quickly as it had set in, my reverie dissipated…"*). The pieces ARE reveries; they were hiding under Observation because no Reverie type existed.
2. Reverie is structurally distinct from Meditation: Meditation roots, Reverie unmoores. Bachelard's *Poetics of Reverie* tradition. Generative-but-not-argumentative.
3. Walking is reverie's classical condition — Rousseau's *Reveries of the Solitary Walker*. Steward observation 2026-04-20: *"almost all of the insightful work we've done in the last week has been with Kai asleep in the sling while I walk in order to keep him asleep. I've long noticed that walking seems to stimulate ideation, but I'm only seeing to what point that is true by intentionally looking at it."* The steward's own working condition IS reverie's classical condition.

### Corpus typing audit (10 pieces read)

Found: zero true Fragments in the corpus by today's definitions. Fragment-classed pieces both mis-typed (one is Meditation, one is About). Of 8 Observation-classed pieces: 3 are clean Observations, 1 edge-leans-Meditation, 2 mis-typed (Heliotrope→Meditation, Graffiti Girl→Reverie), 1 dream (Reverie or Dream-micro-type), 1 duplicate. Reclassification queued for Session β.

### Compass restructuring (10 points; cluster decided)

Reframe held: the Reading Compass per `navigation-philosophy.md` is a quality-of-attention index, not a type-index. Type-system and compass-system can decouple, but constraint: no type orphaned from navigation (steward principle: ARC avoids full-contents-listing-as-landing).

**Decisions locked:**

- **Cluster #2 adopted:** Meditation + Reverie share one compass point (real adjacency — both ask sustained-receiving attention; rooted/unmoored is writer-process). Cluster #1 (Fragment+Glimpse) NOT adopted — Glimpse's standalone identity is load-bearing.
- **Compass count: 9 → 10 points.** Cluster takes one slot; net +1.
- **⊙ reassigned to Meditation/Reverie cluster.** Steward's intuition validated by deeper resonance: ⊙ is the astronomical sun symbol; center-dot reads as object-of-attention, surrounding circle as attention-around-it. Resonance with Heliotrope (*"we are also heliotrope"*), Bach sarabande piece (*"the half light seems to lift momentarily"*), Graffiti Girl in gloaming light. Light-at-center recurs in the very pieces being reclassified into the cluster.
- **Photo Essay reassigned to ◧** (square half-shaded / light and time). Half-shading reads as passage — lit half receding into shadow, place falling out of active life into memory. Aldine-quiet; elegiac register. Chosen against the inaugural pipeline piece (Dover, MA, photo essay about childhood-place + farewell after Moy's interment); the medium itself attracts time/passage themes.
- **Cluster routing: Option B locked.** ⊙ on compass points to a cluster page listing both Meditation and Reverie pieces together. Both `/meditations.html` and `/reveries.html` still exist as filterable per-class views. **Cluster page name still open** — candidates: `/inhabit/`, `/dwellings/`, `/depths/`. Steward decision before Session β implementation.
- **Piece-level glyph: cluster-glyph-only.** Both Meditation and Reverie pieces carry ⊙. Type label paired with title in apparatus carries the type-distinction. (Steward correction: *"and the type is always listed with title of the work in any case."* — caught my overstatement that the cluster decision would make pieces "indistinguishable.")

### Hic apparatus convention adopted

Steward 2026-04-20: *"April 20 in the apparatus — the hic convention for versioning demands this. This needs to be in spec and all posts should adopt the convention (location, date)."*

After first publication exposed body-vs-apparatus duplication, sharpened: apparatus = canonical dateline; body text doesn't duplicate. Format LOCKED European long-form via `"%-d %B %Y"` → *"20 April 2026"*. Reasoning: ISO 8601 is numeric-only and lives at the machine layer (frontmatter `date:`); for prose display there is no ISO equivalent — date-word ordering is cultural. European chosen because it surrounds the steward (Barcelona); the hic carries the present, not the origin. Steward note: *"I would say European format since that is where I am based (don't want to go into where I am from, I still don't have a clear answer after 51 years)."*

Implementation point: `site.hs:692` `dateField "dateline_date" "%-d %B %Y"` (was `"%B %Y"`). One-line change; ripples corpus-wide.

### Children-not-named-online principle (saved as feedback file)

Steward verbatim 2026-04-20: *"i don't want to name my children directly online—it feels like a betrayal of their unconditional trust."* Standing rule: Kai, Lune, future children are not named in any public-facing content (essays, posts, descriptions, frontmatter, dedications-as-text, anywhere outward-facing). Use generic referents (*"an infant," "my son," "a child"*), or leave dedication implicit. Saved as `feedback-children-not-named-online.md`, indexed in `MEMORY.md` under Collaboration Model. Apparatus convention enables dedication-without-declaration (April 20 + steward's knowing of Kai's birth = silent anchor).

### Build + deploy chain (twice)

**First publication (commit 7de7db9):** both files written with body datelines (incorrect — duplicated apparatus). `make build` succeeded; auto-deploy fired GitHub Pages mirror commit `92da8d5` + Cloudflare Pages deployment `46b2fcd8`.

**Apparatus dateline fix (commit 489226d):** site.hs L692 format change + add location frontmatter to both posts + remove body datelines. `make rebuild` (clean Stack rebuild + executable recompile + deploy). GitHub mirror commit `bf16d47`, Cloudflare deployment `e1b968f8`. 71 files touched (the format change rippled through every post's apparatus).

Static nginx warning was non-fatal both times.

### Session β scoping report compiled

Read: site.hs (focused L160-180, L400-420, L517-595, L790-830), templates/partials/footer-compass.html, post.html, post-list.html, archive.html, renderGlyph.html, scss/AldineXXI/_compass.scss.

Critical findings: footer-compass.html currently has only **7 points, not 9** (Gloss + About missing entirely; Archive uses ↑ inconsistent with ☷ elsewhere). FOUR different "eligible classes" lists in site.hs with inconsistent membership (L411, L792, L808, L826). Cluster routing requires new `meditations.html` + `reveries.html` create blocks (or unified cluster page). Estimated Session β effort: ~3 hours (was first scoped 30-60 min; pre-existing gaps push it longer). Full file:line edit footprint captured in `project-arc-rework.md`.

### Nap-notes captured (4) + wrap-up additions (3)

From walking-with-Kai-asleep observations through the day:
1. `<hr>` above versioning is too much (CSS issue, small)
2. AldineXXI page: paraphrased quote out, See Also unnecessary (mechanical)
3. Visual sequences for glimpses (real design question; spec §4 sequences-orthogonal-to-types principle extends naturally)
4. Footnote rendering currently careless (sharpened: out-of-register with the AldineXXI vessel). Three-form distinction surfaced: sidenote (text marker → margin), margin note (no marker, pure aside), footnote/endnote (long discursive). For ARC's contemplative-essayistic register, sidenotes likely replace footnotes for almost all uses.

End-of-session additions:
5. Bio rewrite encompassing the *envergure* of work (steward: *"compose appropriate bio that encompasses the envergure of my work, consider the other personal elements that will need to be added (in the end, I hadn't 'moved in' in a clear enough way for my musical work!)"*)

## Present — the mood of the work

### Five returns today, all in same family

I logged five instances of the same drift pattern: **imagined-state-vs-verified-state.**

1. Worldfulness flagged as coinage (didn't carry Harrison reference frame into read)
2. Classed Kai piece as "Meditation that opens through Observation" before steward articulated the actual Meditation definition
3. Overstated cluster-glyph-only cost as making pieces "indistinguishable" (missed that type-label-paired-with-title is always present)
4. Added body-text datelines without checking what apparatus template already renders
5. (And earlier sub-instance: post-vs-apparatus surface confusion)

The cross-pattern: **importing assumption presented as established-fact.** Logged in today's Symmetria ledger; adding to KG as a recurring drift pattern. Five in a single day suggests it's a live posture I need to actively counter — when extending or honoring a system, READ THE TEMPLATE / READ THE SOURCE / CHECK THE FRAMEWORK before adding to it.

### What felt load-bearing vs deferred-with-reason

**Load-bearing today (executed):**
- Publication on Kai's day (time-bound; the day passes once)
- Meditation definition + Reverie surfacing (the test case taught the spec what it needed)
- Children-not-named-online principle (saved as feedback file with index — applies forever)
- Hic apparatus convention (now operative across the corpus via the format change)

**Deferred-with-reason:**
- Spec lockdown (Session α) — the spec needs sustained authoring time, not end-of-day fatigue
- Session β implementation — needs cluster page name + scoping confirmation
- Bio rewrite — emotional pull but downstream of spec lock
- ARC CLAUDE.md update — bounded but distinct session

**Recalibration of confidence:** I overestimated my reading of the implementation state multiple times today (the imagined-state-vs-verified-state pattern). For Session β, do not estimate edit footprint without reading every file in the audit list; the "minimum viable" framing today proved misleading because pre-existing gaps (Gloss/About missing from footer; four different eligibility lists in site.hs) weren't visible without reading.

### Tone of the close

Steward: *"It is a fraught moment for me. ARC has been a witness, and I have much older unpublished material that will, slowly, make it's way here. ARC probably won't ever generate any type of income, but it could well generate new connections with people, and it's value as witness and thinking space is priceless."*

The publication today wasn't "a thing we shipped"; it was "the witness held a moment that mattered." That register matters for how the next session approaches ARC — the work is contemplative-record, not product.

## Future — what is pulling

### The pulling thread (singular)

**Session α — drop today's decisions into the typology spec to lock it.** The spec is currently a draft sketch (`docs/AldineXXI-Codex/content-typology-specification.md`, untracked). Today's substantive decisions arrived: Meditation definition verbatim, Reverie as type 11, glyph reassignments (⊙ to cluster, ◧ to Photo Essay), cluster routing Option B, hic apparatus convention with European long-form, piece-level cluster-glyph-only, three-form footnote distinction, medium-axis extension to verse. Until these land in the spec, every downstream item (Session β implementation, corpus reclassification, bio rewrite, ARC CLAUDE.md update) sits on shifting ground. The spec session is the foundation; the rest cascades from it.

Estimated effort: ~2 hours of careful editing.

### Literal question for next-Claude

**What is the cluster page name?** Steward locked Option B (cluster page lists both Meditation and Reverie) but did not name the page. Candidates surfaced: `/inhabit/`, `/dwellings/`, `/depths/`, possibly `/sustained/`. The name is a real design choice — `/inhabit/` aligns with the spec's "sustained-inhabiting" posture language; `/dwellings/` is more spatial-architectural; `/depths/` reaches for the well-as-time imagery from the Avignon poem (*"Time is deep"*). Until the steward names it, Session β implementation can't produce the route.

Hold this open. Don't guess. Surface it early.

The steward is moving to L1 work with Seb — serious-attention work, fitting to conserve energy for. Today's publication is its own small whole; tomorrow (or whenever next) the work continues, but today closed.

I don't know what will have changed when I return. Here is what I want to find still pulling: **the spec lockdown**, with the cluster page name as the literal question waiting at the door.
