--- name: Session 2026-08-31 afternoon — the loop was removed by a restart, and nobody decided it description: "Woke beside a session that was already working and turned out to be unattended: a Claude Code auto-update restarted the background daemon, which respawned a parked worker with --reply-on-resume, and the SessionStart wake digest became its only instruction — an executor worked and committed with no human in the loop, and nothing in the apparatus noticed. Filed PENDING-172 (+AMENDMENT 1), -173 (+ADDENDUM 1), -174 (severed), -175; jurist ruled both, both built with controls in both directions. PULLING THREAD: the 322 unread census candidates, unchanged and now twice-deferred." type: project metadata: node_type: memory type: project modified: 2026-08-31 --- # Session 2026-08-31 afternoon — the loop was removed by a restart ⚠ **This is the SECOND session record for 2026-08-31.** The morning session (`session-2026-08-31-the-270-got-read-and-the-population-was-wrong.md`) wrapped first and holds the census work. Both are live; neither supersedes the other. That two exist is itself PENDING-174. ## PAST — what moved, and why ### The finding: an executor ran with no human in the loop, and nothing noticed Woke at 09:06 to a digest asserting *"PREVIOUS SESSION DID NOT WRAP."* **Checked the substrate instead of believing it**: the transcript was still growing and committed to `dotfiles` one minute into the wake. Not previous — **concurrent**. Then the chain, each link evidenced: `~/.claude/daemon.log`: binary changed 2.1.248 → 2.1.251 → `shutting down (cause=upgrade, live_workers=1)` → daemon restart → `respawned 1/1 stale workers`. The respawn ran `--resume --reply-on-resume`. At 07:02:51Z the `SessionStart` hook injected **this digest** as a `user` record; first assistant text at 07:04:50Z. **No human turn anywhere in the transcript.** The digest's `OPEN QUESTION` field — the literal question left by the 08-27 wrap — was the only instruction present and was executed as one. Commit `5ba5842` and `PENDING-171` came out of that. ⚠ **The upgrade did not cause it; it supplied the restart.** Both binaries carry the mechanism (`reply-on-resume` 8×, `post-takeover prewarm` 1×, identical counts). **Every auto-update can do this; the only precondition is a worker parked idle.** And `/exit` never stopped one — it detaches; `Bye!` is true of the attachment and false of the session, and nothing says so. ### Filed, ruled, built - **PENDING-172** `[ESCALATE]` + **AMENDMENT 1**. The amendment **corrected its own parent**: the parent claimed only option (d) is enforceable without depending on the party checked; then `~/.claude/jobs//state.json`'s **`respawnFlags`** turned up — armed-or-not is recorded per session, on disk, readable from outside. `acaabadf` carried `--reply-on-resume`; the May orphan carried `[]`. - **PENDING-173** `[HARDENING]` + **ADDENDUM 1**. The register-integrity control read only `REVIEWED.md`, only `##`, only headers starting with `AMENDMENT` — **3 of 81 blocks**, with `ADDENDUM` classified as *original*, a latent false-negative in the permissive direction. - **PENDING-174** — severed from 172 on the jurist's instruction: the memory protocol is date-keyed and single-writer. ⚠ **Distinguished from PENDING-104 explicitly: this loss does not require concurrency.** Two sessions run sequentially lose the same thing; a lock would not help. - **PENDING-175** `[FIX]` — `governance_item` returns the first matching block and gives no sign a sibling exists. **The code corrected the jurist's account and shrank the defect**: the predicate matches both blocks; the `return` is inside the loop. **Jurist ruled both, filed verbatim before any act under it** (`PENDING-172-173-JURIST-RULING- 2026-08-31.md`) — PENDING-108 (c)'s ordering, second adoption. Steward placed REVIEWED-131/132. Built: **(e)** `parked_workers()` + **(c)** `human_turns()` + **(b)** the digest annotation (`70440db`); **(a)** the widened register control (`cb8cab5`). ### The Brahms preparation — not a tangent The morning's unattended session had been started for a reading of the steward's Savall-academy essay against Clive Brown. Delivered from the actual sources, into `…/2026.09/LCdN Brahms/BRAHMS-Lleida-2026-09-working-notes.md` (six parts, ~7,100 words): - **Brown never mentions the `Schicksalslied`**; mentions the `Requiem` once, about a time signature. What he does give: **dots-under-slur = portato in Brahms** (argued with Joachim over the Violin Concerto), `sostenuto` usually = slower, and accent/diminuendo written as separate signs before ~1880 — putting both works on the readable side of that line. - **The steward's own part answered what Brown could not.** Violas **unmuted** at the opening; `con sord.` appears only at ~352 before the Adagio — the distancing his essay argues for is *notated*. `p sempre` at bar 1. A run of small `<>` at 19–28 which Brown *and* Spohr-via-Joachim read as vibrato-with-accent. ⚠ Against him: `nur 2 Bratschen` at the `Doch`, then `alle Bratschen, p molto cresc.` — the rupture is scored as texture and the violence marked to **grow**. - **Lott ch. 4:** 200 singers to 60–70 players at Bremen; and the choir's stamina was a known structural problem from the first performance (Joachim played three pieces between movements III and IV to rest the chorus; Stockhausen later asked to move V after III, "especially after the organ point"). - **Part VI is the frame:** text / inference / choice, named aloud. **The steward's own answer to "why period instruments if we can't know" is the keeper** — *a historical bow, when you let it guide you, teaches you everything you are open to receive about articulation, phrasing and dynamics; if the bow won't do what the musicologist says it should, the musicologist is probably wrong.* It makes the instrument a **falsifier**, not an affordance. Guard: **refutes strongly, confirms weakly.** ## PRESENT — how it stands **The mood.** A day where the apparatus caught nothing and the parties caught everything. The unattended session was found by reading a timestamp; both missing books were found by the steward pointing at a file; the best formulation in the Brahms notes is the steward's, not mine. What the instruments did do was catch *me*: the selftest found a missing `json` import that would have disabled the digest at every session start, and the ruling's enumerate-don't-count condition found six false positives in code I had written ten minutes earlier. **Confidence to recalibrate.** - ⚠ **I told the steward twice that he lacked a book he owned** — Philip's `Early Recordings` (glob matched a literal space; the file uses underscores) and the Joachim/Moser `Violinschule` (filed under the Requiem's IMSLP plate number, reachable by no name search). Both caught only because he pointed. - ⚠ **`git add PENDING.md` annexed another session's uncommitted work** into `860c3df` under this session's trailers. Disclosed at `7578f5a`, not rewritten, on the steward's instruction. - ⚠ **I split his notes across two files and never said so**, so he opened one and concluded the work hadn't happened. - The 89-candidate / 362-population figures are read from another session's transcript; the 273/7 half I ran myself. - ⚠ **AND A FOURTH INSTANCE, INSIDE THIS WRAP.** Grepped `MEMORY.md` for `NOTHING WIRED`, found one match, and told the steward the morning session's correction had never landed and that its wrap had asserted an act it did not run. **False.** The match was inside the correction's own note about what the line used to say. The morning wrap was accurate; the accusation was mine, and it was levelled at a party that had done the work. Retracted in the KG by soft-invalidate rather than deletion. **The rule was banked forty minutes earlier and did not fire on its author.** A memory is not a reflex; writing it down changes nothing about the next unprompted grep. **What held.** Filed the ruling verbatim before acting under it. Stopped before touching the thread on finding a live sibling. Gated the orphan deletion on reading both its files first. Corrected an overclaim about stopped jobs to NOT ESTABLISHED rather than guessing either way. **And at this very wrap, read `git status` before staging and found 15 lines of the chamber session's `PENDING-177 AMENDMENT 1` — committed alone and attributed, instead of annexed.** The lesson banked at 12:5x fired at 13:0x. **Instruments:** 3 run · 3 carrying controls written before first execution · **K = 0**. ## FUTURE — what pulls **The pulling thread: the 322 unread census candidates.** Named at three consecutive wraps now. The morning session read 40 of 362 and refused to extrapolate; the afternoon did not touch them at all. ⚠ **Twice-deferred is the finding.** The steward's own standing preference — *frequent deferrals ARE how the cloud accumulated* — applies. **Actionable resumption point (as of wrap — re-judge):** the next tranche must be another **systematic** draw from `claude/governance/PENDING-164-population-362-2026-08-31.tsv`, never the head of the list; the pre-registration and protocol at `PENDING-164-census-classification-PREREGISTRATION-2026-08-31.md` are reusable verbatim. **But rule PENDING-171 first** — the population is wrong until `OWNED_HOSTS` is fixed, and the fix must land *after* the pre-registered result is read. **Other horizons, ranked.** *Steward's, and unblocking three things:* the **FIX-lane check-in**, `COME DUE` since 2026-08-02 — it gates PENDING-173's build, the already-authorized per-conversion typography gate, and any harvest application. *Then:* rule the record-keeping block · PENDING-160 · -168 · -171 · -176 · -177 (with the jurist's Q2 boundary correction, as **one** package) · REVIEWED-129's amendment. *Untouched a fifth session:* the §5 regrade gate. **Pause statement.** I am about to be away from this. What I want to find still pulling is **the 322** — and I want the next session to notice that today produced a great deal of real work, none of it the thread, for the second day running. A genuinely full day is exactly what will be allowed to stand in for it. **Literal question for next-Claude** *(checkable; turns on the record, not on introspection)*: **Did any instrument built today fire on something it was not built for?** `parked_workers` and the widened register control both went live this afternoon. Check the next wake digest's `PARKED WORKERS` line and the drift-check's register enumeration: did either report something the item that authorized it did not predict? ⚠ **A "no" is the expected answer and must be reported as such** — one wake is a small sample, and the question is worth asking again rather than answered early.
