**What The Making is (framing — do not mis-file as studium-only):** The Making is an **ARC publication** — the **companion sequence to *After the Reply*** (five positions). The studium engine is developed *in service of writing it*: the pattern-finder reads this source set to surface candidate primitives that ground the writing (engine grounds, David writes). So studium is the **means**, the ARC sequence is the **end**. The Making is the first real exercise of the engine's **signature capability** (charter §IV) — **surfacing deep connections across the library**: genealogy, *citation migration* (how a primitive travels/mutates between voices and centuries), and the temporal axis — borne by the **chavruta/voice primitive** (the three cognitions: associative reasoner · evidential corpus · evaluative steward = executor/jurist/steward, §III; voices + pattern-finder at L2/L3, §X). This is **why** completeness + verbatim fidelity of this source set are load-bearing: boundedness is the source of trust (§V, *"the finitude of the shelf and the infinity of the inquiry"*) — a connection surfaced across a corrupted or paraphrased source is a confabulation, not a finding. Hence the Levi drop-cap gate and Handke-in-German. The reading-source set is the reading that nourishes the writing — the same relation the five published *After the Reply* essays hold in the manifest as `role: examined-text`. File this under both the ARC orbit and the studium engine; it is not a studium-internal corpus.

**The Making sequence reading-source set is COMPLETE against the canonical ReadingList** (`~/_Dev/animal-davidglidden-eu/officina/the-making/notes/20260616_MakingSequenceReadingList.md`; sequence architecture in `…/seeds/20260616_MakingSequenceArchitecture.md`) — verified by reconciliation 2026-06-18. Two physical homes: raw sources in `~/__Making sequence sources/`; cleaned/converted works in `~/_Dev/chamber-library/canonical_texts/`. The sequence itself is drafted in ARC's officina (`~/_Dev/animal-davidglidden-eu/officina/the-making/`).

## Decision recorded 2026-06-18 — Handke served in the GERMAN ORIGINAL
Steward ruling: **the original is source.** Handke is read in German — `gewicht-der-welt-ein-journal-november-1975-marz-1977-das-peter-handke.md` (*Das Gewicht der Welt*, the Position-V entry) and the three other Handke works already in chamber are German. Steward's German is "good enough to read on a fundamental level"; he holds it important that **at least Handke's words enter the corpus untranslated.** He may additionally source EN/FR, but the German original is the canonical source. This extends the 2026-06-16 language ruling (which covered French originals) to a general principle: **originals are source, including German.** Bears on the engine's cross-lingual reranker (proven) + the steward's own reading fluency when Position V opens.

## Sourced-complete ≠ ingested
The studium manifest (`~/_Dev/studium-engine/corpus/manifest.yaml`) carries **only Position I** (`station: I`). Positions II–V + Cross-Sequence are sourced and (for the chamber works) converted, but **not yet in the manifest** — that is the future-stations ingestion work (sha-pinning, line counts, sidecar planning, verify-against-substrate per the manifest's discipline). Do not half-build the manifest; build a station when it opens. The four chamber works (Sennett/Illich-Tools/Vico/Handke) already sit in `canonical_texts/` (the cleaned, engine-eligible tier).

## The one true gate — RESOLVED STALE 2026-07-19 (substrate-verified)
*Original concern (2026-06-18):* Levi's chapter-opening drop-caps are lost at the OCR-source level (printed book: "**T**HE title", "**H**AVE we", "**I** never"); is supplying the initial a legitimate OCR-correction, or must it be flagged editor-supplied? See [[session-2026-06-18-arc-cv-finalized-operations-protocol-born]].
**Resolution (2026-07-19, steward surfaced the staleness; verified by reading every chapter opening of the live canonical file):** the current `the-drowned-and-the-saved-primo-levi.md` (olmOCR 2026-06-26 — a reconversion POSTDATING the note) carries **every chapter-opening initial intact** ("HUMAN memory…", "HAVE we…", "I never liked…", "The title of this chapter…"). No letter loss anywhere; no editor-supplied-initial question remains; the pattern-finder's Position-I pass is NOT gated on this. Residue: two chapters open with the print's small-caps convention flattened to an ALL-CAPS first word (HUMAN · HAVE) — a case artifact, words intact (note: case-sensitive quote-matching against these two openings would mis-verdict; a case question, not a fidelity loss). Language discipline connects to [[feedback-studium-engine-sixtus-v-collaboration]] and the engine's verbatim guarantee ([[reference-studium-engine-architectural-charter]]).

## Substrate-trustability findings 2026-07-14 — HELD for the Position-I engine phase (NOT active threads)
Surfaced while verifying "is the Making substrate trustable for the engine?" Recorded HERE, against the Position-I block, per [[feedback-constitution-as-block-then-pull-based-corpus]] (hold in the block's tracker; address when the phase needs it) — deliberately NOT carried as open threads.
- **Engine manifest = 6 Position-I sources** (Weil ×2, Musil, Arendt-Eichmann, Levi). Positions II–V + Cross-Sequence still sourced-not-ingested (unchanged). Camus *La chute* still absent from the manifest.
- **Arendt *Eichmann* is DIRTY** (a live engine source): `cruft_total=2` under the current gate **+ ~4,712 unresolved EPUB `filepos`/`split` anchor-residue links** (broken internal nav + conversion residue); the 2026-07-12 footnote retro-verify flagged it DIRTY (`+1/-5`, footnote-glue tokens `brainlessness7`/`html_filepos998967`). Prose body is *nearly* verbatim; the residue is in link targets. **Needs a clean re-conversion (Docling) before it is trustable substrate.** Graduated before this was catchable.
- **`audit_cruft` blind spot** — counts 2 where there are ~4,712 `filepos`/`split` residue anchors: the cruft gate does not recognize this residue class (kin to the `md_image`/`svg_raw` gaps). A gate gap to fix when Position-I is the active block.
- **REVIEWED-57's V-TEXT §6 sweep never ran** (no result file — only the Loeb V-DSL map exists) → the born-digital substrate is **verbatim-uncertified as a class**. Incidental evidence only: Weil-*gravity* + Musil CLEAN via the 07-12 footnote retro-verify; Weil-*Enracinement* re-anchored clean (P1) but unswept.
- **Levi = OCR (V-SCAN)** — the body-conservation gate **ABSTAINS** (no ground truth), so it can never be gate-certified verbatim. The drop-cap gate: **resolved 2026-07-19, stale** — initials verified present (see the gate section); the V-SCAN ABSTAIN posture is unchanged.
- **When Position I becomes the active engine phase:** run the REVIEWED-57 §6 V-TEXT sweep over these sources (gate now wired + fixed 2026-07-14, `dbcdcc0`), re-convert Eichmann clean (= the S2b one-door pilot, in flight 2026-07-19). ~~Settle the Levi drop-cap gate~~ — settled 2026-07-19 (stale). **Until then: held, not active.**
