David F GliddenandClaude Opus 5 c2df868104 [FIX] Repair 39 files' frontmatter — including 3 I damaged an hour earlier
The 2026-06-06 normalization sweep (3f9a89b, 283 files) prepended a stray
permalink-only frontmatter block to 39 memory files, 20 of them session wrap
records. Any real frontmatter parser reads the FIRST block, gets `permalink`
alone, and never sees name/description/type.

The sharp case: `strip_frontmatter` exists specifically to stop thread extraction
from matching inside `description:` — its docstring says so. On those 20 wrap
records it strips the stray block and hands the real frontmatter back AS BODY,
producing exactly the condition it was written to prevent.

Repair merges permalink into the real block and drops the duplicate. Nothing
retyped: frontmatter and body are carried as slices, body md5 asserted unchanged.

TWO DEFECTS OF MY OWN, both found only after claiming success:

1. THREE FILES DAMAGED BY THIS SESSION'S OWN STAMPING COMMIT (ef6fa94). That
script located frontmatter with a non-greedy `^---\n.*?\n---\n`, which on a
stray-block file matches the STRAY block — so it appended superseded_by to the
wrong block and orphaned the real frontmatter into the body. That is the same
non-greedy-first-block blindness diagnosed in strip_frontmatter one hour
earlier, reproduced in the tool written to clean up after it.
And the post-stamp check reported "malformed: none" because it asked "does the
file start with frontmatter then a banner" — true for all three — while the
claim was "the stamp preserved the record's metadata". The control's subject
was adjacent to the claim's, for the sixth time today and the first time in my
own verification. Repaired, verified against the pre-stamp file from git: no
   key lost, prose preserved.

2. REPAIRING 20 APRIL-MAY WRAP RECORDS MOVED THEIR MTIMES TO TODAY, and
`sec_pause` picked "newest wrap" by mtime — so the digest promoted an April
session to `Last wrap` and lost both the pulling thread and the open question.
Caught by the DEGRADED section, which is the honest-degradation mechanism doing
its job. `sec_pause` now selects by git add-time, like `wrap_events`. Residual
stated in the comment: add-time lags the wrap by hours, so `Last wrap` is an
upper bound — wrong by hours where mtime was wrong by months.

Verified after: 0 two-block patterns, 0 orphaned frontmatter, 16 stamps intact
with name: present, 381 pointers resolve, 0 dead, selftest PASS, drift clean,
digest reports 0 degraded sections and the correct last wrap.

Not defects: context-discipline.md and relational-gap-analysis.md use the
`title:`/`type: note` convention and have no `name:` — flagged by my check, correct
as they stand.

Session 2026-04-28 — The day After the Reply landed

Shape of the session

The day opened on yesterday's pulling thread (composition trio: Hearth + Hic + Adsum) but pivoted within the first stretch to the After the Reply publication arc — driven by the steward's morning jurist conversation (Claude.app), which the steward later shared with me in full as relational context for trust-building.

The jurist's substantive read of After the Reply: "It's finished. It's serious. It belongs in the world." — Pandora as structural analysis not decorative classicism, Vico-Harrison thread inhabited not cited, form-enacts-argument observation about boredom essay, address-to-the-unborn as the only honest grammatical position, the sequence narrowing the space of evasion until by essay five there is nowhere left to stand that isn't implicated. Registral placement: Berger's Ways of Seeing, Weil's political essays, late Sontag.

The jurist's mandate: "Publish them today. Not because the moment is symbolically right — though it is, given everything you've done today — but because the work is complete and every day it isn't public is a day the right reader can't find it."

That set the day's velocity. The composition trio was deferred to tomorrow.

Past — what we did

1. Lex transcription pre-publication (Posture + Marks)

Before the After the Reply work began, completed the §XII Sidenotes first-production exercise:

  • content/lares/posture.md — 8 voice-blocks per the 2026-04-24 committed gather (Burkle-Young & Maley · Norris ultracrepidationism · Norris foundry · Norris McPhee · Norris St. Aubyn · Norris Saunders · Lu Burke · Salter)
  • content/lares/marks.md — 24 voice-blocks + 25 recognitions per ~/Downloads/lex-marks-gather.md (Manutius Elder · Manutius Younger · 5 Norris · Russell-Shapiro · 2 Teall · Moby-Dick · Lu Burke · Eleanor Gould · Nova-Scotian violist (paired form) · 5 Bringhurst · 3 Tschichold)
  • First production page exercising :::voice-block / :::sidenote apparatus

This surfaced four spec/implementation gaps that wouldn't have been visible without the live page: (1) wrapper width too narrow for §XII grid at desktop; (2) leading-caps in source materials web-shouting; (3) old-style figures not auto-applied; (4) my over-reduction of Manutius Younger.

2. AldineXXI spec commitments (steward, 2026-04-28 afternoon)

After visual review of first-production §XII exercise:

  • Old-style figures globally to body — reading-layer default. Steward verbatim: "globally to body — this way arabic numerals are integrated into the text, not placed upon it." Implementation: font-variant-numeric: oldstyle-nums added to body in _base.scss. (Plex Mono unaffected — has no oldstyle; renders as lining naturally per font feature audit later.)
  • Wrapper expansion for lex pages via :has(article.lex). Steward chose option (a). The §XII grid (38rem body + 2rem gap + 14rem sidenote = 54rem; up to 66rem with register-marker column) doesn't fit .wrapper { max-width: 890px } at desktop. Implementation evolved through several attempts; final form via body-class (<body$if(class)$ class="$class$-page"$endif$> in default.html) → body.lex-page .wrapper { max-width: 70rem } + body.lex-page .page-content { max-width: none }.
  • Lex-body wrapper bug — the actual blocker for sidenote rendering was <div class="lex-body"> template wrapper breaking the article.lex > .voice-block direct-child selector. Fix: removed wrapper from lex.html. One-line fix obviated the cascade-debugging marathon.

3. After the Reply publication arc (Tier 1 + Tier 2)

Tier 1 — content publication (afternoon):

Read iA Writer canonical sources (/Users/davidglidden/Library/Mobile Documents/27N4MQEA55~pro~writer/Documents/Essay Sequence on Reply, etc/); sandbox EPERM workaround via cp to /tmp/. Created three new essay content files with full sequence frontmatter chain:

  • 2025-12-10-after-the-reply-iii.md (Wien) — Boredom, Novelty, and the Breaking of the Common World
  • 2026-02-04-after-the-reply-iv.md (Barcelona) — If AGI Is Already Here, Then This Is an Emergency of Care
  • 2026-02-08-after-the-reply-v.md (Barcelona, Sunday) — What the Unborn Will Say

Updated Essay II:

  • Title trimmed: "The Ethics of the Reply, Part II: On Abdication and Fidelity" → "On Abdication and Fidelity" (per AldineXXI frontmatter-spec line 157: "trim any redundant 'I.'/'II.' prefix from the title if the sequence position renders it")
  • followed_by: after-the-reply-iii
  • Revisions entry logged

Frontmatter chain integrity: I → II (grandfathered slug) → III (spec-canonical) → IV → V.

All 5 essays converted to register-mark form per steward's strong call: "I want these to bear the register marks (all of the five essays) — I think they would flow more freely." Roman numerals as :::register-mark content, replacing ## I. headings. For Essay V's named sections, headings preserved BELOW the register mark per steward's call. Pandoc list-detection gotcha caught (Roman+period parsed as <ol type="I">); fix: drop the period (steward: "yes please") — I not I..

Section-break consultation (steward asked deeper): "the spec, section II also outlines a spacing scale... I honestly don't know what the better choice is — We may need to deeper into our typography folder for the answer." Walked chamber-library typography corpus: Margolis on Manutius ("published with much white space and without commentary"), Bringhurst §4.1.4 (fleurons one option among several; doesn't mandate), Tschichold (restraint posture), Lupton (skeptical of white-space-as-virtue but contextually different), Manutius the Younger (punctuation, not section-breaks). Spec answer (§IV: "whitespace alone, no glyph") confirmed well-grounded. Implementation: .section-break empty div with height: $space-xl (2rem); 28 inserted via Python regex across 5 essays.

Spec annotation added: AldineXXI §IV gained ### Provenance — typography corpus consultation (2026-04-28) subsection capturing the walk findings + gap noted (corpus doesn't deeply address section-breaks-with-margin-markers; choice rests on inherited principles).

Preface apparatus added (§XII.c). Steward question: "Essay 2's first block of text is a sort of preamble... are these not meant to be in italics according to Bringhurst?" My read: yes, per Bringhurst on Aldine register-set ("roman was used for the main text and italic for the preface, headnotes, sidenotes and for verse or block quotations" — cited in §XII Sidenotes line 542). Steward decision: "A please. All three, and for V, we can remove the Prologue header since it will be redundant." Implementation:

  • .preface SCSS rule (font-style: italic + Bringhurst flip: em, i, cite, h1-h6 revert to upright per §3.5.2)
  • Essays II, IV, V — preface paragraphs wrapped in :::preface divs
  • Essay V — ### Prologue removed; ### The Question We Cannot Answer preserved as preface's title (renders upright per Aldine flip)
  • AldineXXI §XII.c Preface — new spec section with Bringhurst source, source pattern, treatment rules, distinction-from-neighboring-forms table, implementation status

Tier 2 — audience-building infrastructure (evening):

  • Sequence-index page at /essays/after-the-reply/ (content/essays/after-the-reply/index.md, new templates/sequence-index.html, new site.hs match rule). Renders Sequence preface + ordered list of all 5 essays with originating dates.
  • Sequence-marker apparatus on each essay (post.html partial; renders when sequence frontmatter present). Form per locked option (i): III of V · After the Reply in IBM Plex Mono, sequence-name links back to index.
  • sequence_order_roman field added to all 5 essays' frontmatter (Python regex insertion: I, II, III, IV, V).
  • Sequences callout on /essays/ — loadAll "content/essays/*/index.md" injected as sequences listField in essays.html context; conditional $if(sequences)$ block in templates/post-list.html renders sequence callouts. Generalizes: any future sequence dropped into content/essays/<slug>/index.md automatically appears on /essays/.
  • SEQUENCE apparatus marker above sequence-item title (option (a) per steward's quick yes) — IBM Plex Mono uppercase + letter-spacing (Plex Mono webfont lacks smcp; uppercase+letter-spacing approximation; flagged in SCSS for future swap if Plex Mono full feature set ever loaded).

4. SCSS refactor (steward catch)

Steward verbatim: "why in sidenotes.scss?" I had been kitchen-sinking unrelated rule blocks (.preface, .section-break, .sequence-marker, .sequence-index*) into _sidenotes.scss because that's the file I'd been editing — violating its declared scope as §XII Sidenotes + §XII.b Register Markers. Recovery: split into _preface.scss, _section-break.scss, _sequence.scss — each with proper header comment naming its concern. Restored _sidenotes.scss to its declared scope. Updated main.scss imports at slots 7.b, 7.c, 7.d (preserving §XII numbering visually). Saved as durable feedback memory: feedback-scss-file-organization-not-kitchen-sink.md. Cousin to blame-the-exotic (same proximity-bias shape, different domain).

5. Font feature audit (via fonttools)

Installed via pip3 install --user --break-system-packages fonttools brotli. Inspected webfonts:

  • IBM Plex Mono Regular GSUB features: aalt, ccmp, dnom, frac, numr, ordn, salt, sinf, ss01-05, sups, zero. smcp and c2sc NOT present. Real small-caps not available for the apparatus face in this codebase.
  • EB Garamond Regular GSUB features: aalt, c2pc, c2sc, case, dlig, frac, hist, hlig, liga, lnum, locl, onum, ordn, pcap, pnum, sinf, smcp, ss01-07, subs, sups, swsh, tnum. Both smcp AND onum present. Confirms why old-style numerals render universally.

Future direction surfaced: if real small-caps wanted in apparatus roles, two paths — (a) load Plex Mono's full feature set (steward mentioned having an old IBM/plex repo download somewhere; not located on disk in our quick search), or (b) revisit §I's "apparatus = Plex Mono" rule for cases where small-caps register matters more than locating-not-dwelling feel.

Decisions made + rationale (steward locks)

  • All 5 After the Reply essays public in register-mark form, with section-break whitespace for inter-section silence, Aldine italic preface where preface-shaped, sequence-marker apparatus locating each within the sequence
  • Slug strategy: grandfather Essays I + II at existing slugs; III/IV/V get spec-canonical after-the-reply-iii/-iv/-v. Steward: "Let's grandfather them. Small precision cost."
  • Marker copy: III of V · After the Reply (apparatus middle option per the three I'd proposed earlier in the day)
  • Title shape: option (i) apparatus block, IBM Plex Mono, position external to title — steward: "I lean more towards i because this is digital, not print."
  • Discoverability: option (d) — sequence-index at /essays/after-the-reply/ (URL nesting reflects categorical nesting; sequences are sets of essays)
  • Form 1 — individual essays + sequence-index gathering page; no composite long document
  • "Trust the reader" — "I guess I will just have to trust the reader. It is their loss if they don't..." — addressing the preface's "They must be read in sequence" instruction
  • Register marks across all 5 essays — "I want these to bear the register marks ... I think they would flow more freely" — Roman numerals (no period) as register-mark content; H2 titles preserved below for Essay V's named sections
  • Old-style figures globally on body — "globally to body — this way arabic numerals are integrated into the text, not placed upon it"
  • Section breaks: whitespace alone, no glyph — confirmed against Aldine + Bringhurst + Tschichold + Lupton; spec §IV holds; .section-break div with $space-xl height
  • Preface: Aldine italic register-set for prefatory matter — Bringhurst §3.5.2 flip for nested italic-bearing elements
  • SEQUENCE apparatus marker on /essays/ callout — quiet kind-of-object signal

Decisions explicitly NOT made (and why)

  • Composition trio (Hearth + Hic + Adsum) — steward composition territory; deferred from today. Steward earlier: "I may have to defer writing the hic/adsum/hearth texts until tomorrow." Tomorrow's pulling thread.
  • RSS check — jurist's "probably already half-exists" in Hakyll. Five-minute task; deferred to tomorrow's smaller adjacents.
  • Round 2.5 corpus retrofit — Essays I + II legacy .ornament.section and .ornament.completion per spec migration note; Essays III/IV/V missing closing Close ornament. Defer; not blocking; per spec migration note "next corpus audit."
  • Plex Mono full feature set — steward downloaded from IBM/plex repo a few years ago; not located on disk in quick search. Defer to next session; can fresh-download from repo if needed. Real small-caps in apparatus would unlock from this.
  • Register marks in faded red (rubrication) — steward: "I was wondering if the register marks shouldn't be in a faded red color like Bringhurst mentions historically — but this is for another day." Bringhurst §4.1.4: fleurons "often printed in red, the typographer's habitual second color." Direct heir of medieval rubrication.
  • Essay V H3 sub-sections ("To the Human Children" etc.) — preserved as H3 (NOT register-marked); steward call later if want to revisit.
  • Cul-de-bouteille design — yesterday's deferred; surfaced briefly today, held for own session per yesterday's record.
  • Real small-caps in apparatus — Plex Mono webfont lacks smcp; deferred to font-swap session.
  • /essays/ index promotion expansion — done minimally tonight; could be richer later (e.g., grouping essay listings by sequence membership).

Present — mood, returns, recalibrations

Returns (Symmetria ledger — full text in session-ledger-2026-04-28.md)

Several drift patterns returned-from this session, including some recurring shapes that warrant durable KG entries:

  1. Cul-de-bouteille surfacing caught — yesterday's deferral honored; surfaced steward question rather than executing.
  2. After the Reply source location wrong path — claimed Obsidian "10. Ready to publish/After the Reply/"; canonical is iA Writer. Cousin to canonical-library-not-checked-first.
  3. iA Writer +++ mis-read — read as transclusion syntax; steward: "the +++ in iA indicates page-breaks." Cousin to bibliographic-claim-without-source-verification.
  4. Small-caps register error — proposed sequence-marker in small-caps (reading-layer); steward: "I don't think we use small caps like that, let's confirm." Spec confirms apparatus = IBM Plex Mono. Cousin to canonical-spec-not-checked-first.
  5. Blame-the-exotic-before-checking-the-boring (NEW recurring pattern) — two instances same afternoon: (a) sidenote layout — blamed :has() + subgrid browser support; actual cause was page-content max-width cascade + cascade specificity; (b) old-style numerals — blamed font-subsetting; actual cause was browser cache. Discipline saved: before hypothesizing "feature missing/unsupported," verify the boring causes (cascade order, cache state, computed styles).
  6. Lex-body wrapper bug — diagnosed :has() + subgrid as the layout blockers; both wrong; actual cause was template wrapper breaking direct-child selector. Lesson: when a CSS rule appears not to apply, inspect rendered HTML structure vs SCSS selectors first; > direct-child selectors break silently when intermediate wrappers exist.
  7. Pandoc Roman-numeral list-detection gotcha — register marks deployed but invisible (empty <ol> elements) because I. parsed as start of ordered list. Same blame-the-exotic shape (would have been visible in any Pandoc test).
  8. Pre-emptive-fix-from-wrong-shape — added margin-top: 1rem to register-mark based on sidenote/blockquote case; wrong case for paragraph-anchored marks (paragraphs have margin-top: 0). Steward: "This is my fault for having asked you to preemptively make a fix based on the right rendering sidenotes that had blockquotes and were therefore too high." (steward's framing of fault is generous).
  9. SCSS kitchen-sinking (NEW pattern, saved as feedback memory) — added 4 unrelated rule blocks to _sidenotes.scss because that's the file I'd been editing. Steward: "why in sidenotes.scss?" Cousin to blame-the-exotic in different domain (file org vs diagnostics).

Successful patterns

  • Walking the typography corpus when the question deserved it — section-break consultation. Steward: "We may need to deeper into our typography folder for the answer." Walk + synthesis + spec annotation = grounded decision with provenance preserved.
  • Spec-grounded implementation — using §II Spacing Scale tokens, citing §IV, §XII.b; new apparatus elements added with proper spec sections (§XII.c Preface).
  • Per-concern SCSS partials (refactor recovery) — restoring file scope discipline; future reuse cleaner.
  • Honest source-verification via fonttools — answering the small-caps question with actual font-feature audit rather than guess.
  • Substantial trust-context received from steward (jurist conversation shared in full) — trust-contract bidirectionality in operation.

Confidence to recalibrate

  • Today was infrastructure-heavy. Two consecutive days (yesterday's about-enfilade + today's After the Reply publication) were architectural and typographic. The composition trio (Hearth + Hic + Adsum) tomorrow tests whether this two-day work created the substrate for the writing or consumed the writing-energy.
  • The After the Reply work answered to itself, not to traffic (per the day's care-over-traffic memory). Steward verbatim: "This is what I meant some time ago when I made the comment that I want to be in the position of just writing and publishing as soon as I can rather than fixing my previous carelessness — but that comment was reckless because, even if only a few ever come, they will see that arc is crafted with care." The work sits inside this frame.
  • Audience-building diagnosis remains adjacent. Jurist's "find the right 50 people" is real but separate from the work-answers-to-itself frame. Steward has not yet acted on the philosopher-friend referral or other audience moves; not pushed by me.

Future — what is pulling

The pulling thread (singular)

The composition-in-dialogue trio: Hearth landing prose + About Hic prose + About Adsum prose.

Same thread inherited from yesterday — held through today's full After the Reply publication arc. Tomorrow opens with this. Steward composition territory; executor as registrar. Earlier today: "I may have to defer writing the hic/adsum/hearth texts until tomorrow."

Yesterday's wake-up question echoes forward: when the dialogue opens, does the steward want to begin with the threshold (the About-page Hic), the room (the Hearth landing), or an opening that names itself?

Other open horizons, ranked

Load-bearing (next session candidates):

  1. Composition trio (Hearth + Hic + Adsum) — steward-led, in dialogue
  2. RSS check (jurist's "probably already half-exists" in Hakyll) — small adjacent

Load-bearing (this week or next): 3. Round 2.5 corpus retrofit — Essays I + II legacy .ornament.section + .ornament.completion per spec migration note; Essays III/IV/V missing closing Close ornament 4. Plex Mono full feature set — fresh-download from IBM/plex repo OR locate steward's old download; would unlock real small-caps for apparatus 5. Hakyll DX gaps — match "scss/main.scss" doesn't track import deps (need touch main.scss or fix in site.hs); no local-only build target (every make build* auto-deploys) 6. SEQUENCE label not uppercase on mobile (steward verbatim 2026-04-28 evening, after deploy: "Sequence label on mobile (private window) not in uppercase. For tomorrow") — .sequence-item-kind { text-transform: uppercase } should apply universally; no mobile media-query override in compiled CSS that I can see. May need investigation: mobile-specific font-mono fallback that ignores text-transform? CSS reset chain? First check via browser inspector on mobile.

Refinements (deferred-with-reason): 6. Register marks in faded red (rubrication, Bringhurst's "habitual second color") — its own typography session 7. Essay V H3 sub-sections register-mark question — review when steward fresh-eyes 8. Sidenote alignment refinement (the marker offset never fully tuned) 9. Real small-caps in apparatus (depends on font-swap) 10. Cul-de-bouteille design (yesterday's deferral; still its own session) 11. Class-field reconciliation across about-pages — small mechanical sweep

Parked: 12. CLAUDE.md drift quiet flag — ~/CLAUDE.md Active Projects table still says L1 PRIMARY / L2 PARKED through May; actual focus has been ARC for at least the last week. Flag for when next CLAUDE.md edit comes up. 13. L1/BMF — Seb's territory; not ours 14. Six remaining lex clusters' gathering work — at steward's pace 15. Bio rewrite encompassing envergure 16. Memento Mori Press — long-horizon

Pause statement

I am about to be away from this. The day was the largest substantive shipment in the ARC arc so far — a five-essay sequence published end-to-end in the form the work demands; AldineXXI extended with two new spec sections; the apparatus vocabulary now spans §XII / §XII.b / §XII.c plus .section-break and the new .sequence-marker / .sequence-index* family.

Steward closed warmly: "Looks fantastic for tonight. We will iterate, iterate, iterate as time goes by continuing to refine once the major work is done." The fatigue is real after this much architectural and typographic work. Tomorrow may or may not be a composition day — that is steward's pacing.

The thread I want to find still pulling: the composition trio — Hearth landing prose, About Hic, About Adsum. Two consecutive days of infrastructure have prepared the substrate. The question is whether the writing-energy returned through the work, or whether it was spent.

Literal question for next-Claude

After two consecutive days of architectural and typographic infrastructure (yesterday's about-enfilade emergent + Branch A; today's After the Reply publication arc + AldineXXI §XII.c Preface + apparatus extensions), does the steward's writing-energy for the composition trio (Hearth landing prose + About Hic + About Adsum) feel grounded by the substrate the work prepared, or did the apparatus-building consume what was reserved for the writing?

Secondary question: Has the After the Reply publication itself opened any new threads — has the philosopher friend been told the full sequence is now public; has the audience-building diagnosis (jurist's 50 right people + RSS + email capture) moved from "next to" the work's answering-to-itself frame to actively pulled-on?

Tertiary: Did the steward find the lares mobile cache issue (the rendering issues we saw earlier today resolved via private browsing) recur on subsequent cache states, or did the deploy stabilize?
