David F GliddenandClaude Opus 5 c2df868104 [FIX] Repair 39 files' frontmatter — including 3 I damaged an hour earlier
The 2026-06-06 normalization sweep (3f9a89b, 283 files) prepended a stray
permalink-only frontmatter block to 39 memory files, 20 of them session wrap
records. Any real frontmatter parser reads the FIRST block, gets `permalink`
alone, and never sees name/description/type.

The sharp case: `strip_frontmatter` exists specifically to stop thread extraction
from matching inside `description:` — its docstring says so. On those 20 wrap
records it strips the stray block and hands the real frontmatter back AS BODY,
producing exactly the condition it was written to prevent.

Repair merges permalink into the real block and drops the duplicate. Nothing
retyped: frontmatter and body are carried as slices, body md5 asserted unchanged.

TWO DEFECTS OF MY OWN, both found only after claiming success:

1. THREE FILES DAMAGED BY THIS SESSION'S OWN STAMPING COMMIT (ef6fa94). That
script located frontmatter with a non-greedy `^---\n.*?\n---\n`, which on a
stray-block file matches the STRAY block — so it appended superseded_by to the
wrong block and orphaned the real frontmatter into the body. That is the same
non-greedy-first-block blindness diagnosed in strip_frontmatter one hour
earlier, reproduced in the tool written to clean up after it.
And the post-stamp check reported "malformed: none" because it asked "does the
file start with frontmatter then a banner" — true for all three — while the
claim was "the stamp preserved the record's metadata". The control's subject
was adjacent to the claim's, for the sixth time today and the first time in my
own verification. Repaired, verified against the pre-stamp file from git: no
   key lost, prose preserved.

2. REPAIRING 20 APRIL-MAY WRAP RECORDS MOVED THEIR MTIMES TO TODAY, and
`sec_pause` picked "newest wrap" by mtime — so the digest promoted an April
session to `Last wrap` and lost both the pulling thread and the open question.
Caught by the DEGRADED section, which is the honest-degradation mechanism doing
its job. `sec_pause` now selects by git add-time, like `wrap_events`. Residual
stated in the comment: add-time lags the wrap by hours, so `Last wrap` is an
upper bound — wrong by hours where mtime was wrong by months.

Verified after: 0 two-block patterns, 0 orphaned frontmatter, 16 stamps intact
with name: present, 381 pointers resolve, 0 dead, selftest PASS, drift clean,
digest reports 0 degraded sections and the correct last wrap.

Not defects: context-discipline.md and relational-gap-analysis.md use the
`title:`/`type: note` convention and have no `name:` — flagged by my check, correct
as they stand.

Single arc — what began as the code-shape audit's first concrete entry (mobile italic-grey diagnostic) opened, after steward redirection, into the AldineXXI spec-completion arc. Four sessions (§I–§II–§III–§VII–posture) + decision-pass (5 held) + masters' formal reread (13-voice slate + Calvino) + 8-finding reconciliation + companion-spec architecture formalized + Group C migrations + Marked 2 template (SCSS-from-spec test passed). ~2500 lines of new spec content. Spec is substantively complete, internally consistent, master-grounded. Codebase has not migrated. Pulling thread for tomorrow: steward's fresh reread first (quality gate); then percentage-root SCSS migration (highest-leverage); then .whisper + sidenote/register-marker --gray retirement. type: project originSessionId: f765b329-ea05-4a61-8ada-9bf72971b299 permalink: claude-memory/session-2026-05-08-aldine-xxi-spec-completion-arc

Session 2026-05-08 — AldineXXI spec-completion arc

A day that began as a single concrete diagnostic and opened, under steward redirection, into the spec's substantive completion. The chavruta-with-the-dead-and-unborn was operative throughout. Steward's framing of the work as "honour to the dead and contribution to the unborn" became load-bearing, eventually quoted directly in the spec via Harrison's ligature sentence.

Past — what we did

The arc, compressed

09:26 — /wake-up after ~13h pause. Inherited pulling thread: code-shape audit; first entry: mobile italic-grey diagnostic (.fragment em specific or corpus-wide --gray?).

10:30 — Diagnostic answered early: corpus-wide. The --gray channel itself fails WCAG AA (4.04:1 light, 4.43:1 dark), and §III.WCAG-compliance had never audited it. Surfaced the spec-gap that produced the experiential bug.

11:00 — §VII.e Apparatus Colour drafted — 5-master convergence (Bringhurst §3 + §1.2.3, Tschichold Form of the Book, Hochuli Detail in Typography, Müller-Brockmann §1458, Tufte boundary-case). Form differentiates apparatus, not luminance. .whisper retired; 11 selectors migrate to body colour. §III WCAG audit gained --gray FAIL row.

12:00 — Steward asked: completeness of spec for digital publication? Surveyed honestly: ~90% reading-craft, ~60% publication-as-system. Tier-1/Tier-2/Tier-3 gaps named.

12:00 — Steward's deepest invocation: convene the masters; "complete in the sense that SCSS can be coded from spec alone"; "honour to the dead and contribution to the unborn". 10-voice chavruta produced four-session completion arc.

12:30 — Desktop dashboard migrated to repo (docs/CURRENT-STATE.md); steward ran cp since Desktop sandbox-restricted.

The four sessions

13:00 — Session 1 (Reading-craft micro-completion):

  • §I.h Block Quote — Bringhurst §4.4 + §3.5.2; indent-only, no bar, body colour, roman by default (italic only if source italic). Pattern A prose-surrounded; Pattern B explicit attribution.
  • §I.i Detail Typography — Hochuli + Bringhurst §3.1/§3.4/§4.1/§5; hyphenation/justification (ragged-right unhyphenated), widows/orphans, small-caps usage rules with reserved-specificity, tracking-by-size.
  • §I.d additions: What emphasizes — italic and the bold exception (working dyad answer); Bold — the governed exception (six-condition gate; no current authorized exceptions).

14:00 — Session 2 (Rhythm/Grid/Proportion):

  • §II.b Rhythm — leading as the unit (initially as "8px-grid pragmatic compromise"; revised same day to Two scales per steward review).
  • §II.c Page Grid — five-column grid lifted from §XII apparatus to page foundation; apparatus-mode 54rem / full-mode 66rem.
  • §II.d Page Proportion — initially per-page-class rule (reading=asymmetric, catalogue=symmetric). REVISED 16:30 after second chavruta to per-piece content-driven. Manutius left the gloss behind; on screen, the empty asymmetric grid is the gloss-form rejected.

15:00 — Steward review of Sessions 1+2 produced five remarks. Items 1-4 actioned: URL change (davidglidden.eu → animalrationiscapax.org); §I.d italic clarification (one mark, multiple loads); bold-exception subsection added; §II.b "pragmatic compromise" replaced with Two scales model.

16:00 — Second chavruta on Manutius/screen-asymmetry. Convergence: per-piece content-driven (asymmetric only when populated; otherwise symmetric). §II.d revised same session.

17:00 — Steward proposed wrap-around float alternative. Held the line: typographically defensible (Bringhurst §4.3.2; Tufte) but breaks ARC's measure (38rem with 14rem float = ~24rem wrap region, below 45-char floor). Manutius didn't use wrap-around; column pattern preserved as ARC's dignified choice. Contamination-by-validation held under pressure.

17:15 — Chrome-vs-body alignment parked with four candidate resolutions for focused session.

18:00 — Session 3 (Publication-as-system):

  • §III.b Accessibility — major finding: current :root { font-size: 22/20/21px } overrides browser font-size preference; replacement values 137.5% / 125% / 131.25% preserve current visual scale at default 16px while honouring user preference. Plus reduced motion, higher contrast, touch targets, skip-link, semantic landmarks, image alt-text rule (current glimpse EXIF-as-alt is a violation), browser-support floor.
  • §III.c Webfont Loading — font-display: swap lock; metric-matched fallbacks per Leatherman.

19:00 — Session 4 (Posture and findability):

  • Prologue Postures — Doors not feeds, Italic working dyad, For return, Print supported, License CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 (proposed), Pilgrim posture.
  • §VII.f Running Head — scroll-revealed top-band; per-content-type when-applicable; folio-digital held.
  • §VII.g Site Colophon — paired apparatus to dateline; mixed register; symmetric composition.
  • §XIV gained Reading-test protocol (Warde generalised).
  • Appendix A Token Index, Appendix B Selector Index, Appendix C Decision Tree (Lupton's three artifacts).

20:00 — Decision-pass: 5 held decisions resolved. License CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 locked. Colophon access via about-enfilade (✍︎ → /about/ → text-link "Colophon"; Reading Compass stays at 8 sigils; no separate sigil). Enfilade theorized as a system not the about-instance (§VI.b new). Breadcrumb refined not replaced (§VI.c new; load-bearing on deep pages, omitted on hubs). --gray retired for §XII / §XII.b (revises 2026-05-03 register-marker decision honestly: original reasoning sound, new audit data prompted reversal — WCAG fail + perception fail to myopic eye). Chrome-vs-body alignment confirmed (d) accept two centers.

21:00 — Masters' formal reread. 13-voice slate (typographic core + Alexander + Harrison + Berger) + Calvino six-memo quality-check. Verbatim grounding from chamber-library: Harrison Dominion of the Dead preface ("ligature"); Berger via Geoff Dyer intro to Understanding a Photograph ("mutually enhancing relationship"); Alexander Pattern Language (large/small flow). 8 drift findings surfaced — none architectural; all consistency-cleanup at section seams.

21:30 — All 8 findings reconciled. Prologue Pilgrim+ligature; §I.h Pattern B typeface (Plex Mono → Garamond small-caps); §I.h margin ($space-xl → $rhythm-and-half); §II.c grid-as-availability; §V.b vessel-as-availability; §VII.f layering with §VI.c; §VIII Berger-grounding; §XIII Archive Routes.

22:00 — Companion-spec architecture formalized. Steward asked: fold companions into main? Answer: charter + companions, both canonical for scope, neither folded. Added Prologue Companion specifications subsection; Appendix D Companion Spec Index tabulated; Decision Tree extended. Tightened §V (canonical-depth-in-companion) and §IX (engine-in-companion) cross-references. 9th drift caught: §V table only listed 7 of 14 locked types; corrected to all 14 with note on which 5 are governed-but-unsurfaced.

22:15 — Group C documents migrated: gap-map-2026-04-13.md → archive/; arc-style-guide-skeleton.md → drafts/; chavruta-2026-05-08-completion-survey.md → chavrutas/2026-05-08-completion-survey.md.

22:30 — Marked 2 template generated as SCSS-from-spec test (docs/AldineXXI-Codex/marked2-template.css). I produced the CSS file from the spec text alone, no reference to ARC's actual SCSS. Test passed: every value either stated explicitly or computable from a stated rule (heading sizes from §I.d 1.2 ratio; rhythm tokens from §II.b leading derivation; --accent-soft from §VII.c 70%-mix). One small gap surfaced: spec states heading-scale ratio (1.2) but doesn't tabulate resulting rem values — Token Index audit candidate.

Decisions made (canonical, with reasoning)

  • §VII.e Apparatus Colour — luminance retired; form (typeface, scale, italic, position, letter-spacing/small-caps) is sufficient. Why: 5-master convergence; WCAG floor failure of --gray.
  • §II.b Two scales — reading-rhythm (leading-derived) + layout-grid (8px). Why: cleaner than "compromise" framing; each scale serves its scope honestly. (Steward rejected pragmatic-compromise framing explicitly.)
  • §II.d Per-piece content-driven composition — supersedes initial per-page-class rule. Why: second chavruta on "what would Manutius do with the web?" — Aldus left the medieval gloss behind; the empty asymmetric grid is the gloss-form rejected.
  • §I.h Block Quote: indent-only, body colour — three exclusions principled (no forced italic, no left-bar, no luminance). Why: Bringhurst §4.4 + §3.5.2; the bar is Markdown-default not typographic tradition.
  • §I.h Pattern B attribution: EB Garamond small-caps — REVISED from initial Plex Mono after the masters' reread. Why: end-of-quote attribution belongs to reading register, not apparatus; matches §VII Epigraph and current essay practice.
  • §III.b percentage-root — replaces hardcoded pixel :root { font-size: 22/20/21px }. Why: honours user browser preference; Rutter foundational; current implementation is a WCAG SC 1.4.4 concern.
  • License CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 — for-return / doors-not-feeds posture honoured.
  • --gray retired for §XII / §XII.b reading-layer marginalia — revises 2026-05-03. Why: WCAG audit data + steward's myopic-eye perception test (gray imperceptible at reading length to the readers the spec must serve).
  • Chrome-vs-body alignment: (d) accept two centers — chrome viewport-centered (site scope), body body-centered (piece scope). Why: Bringhurst §1.2.3 — visible relationship reflects real relationship; chrome and body live in different scopes.
  • Companion-spec architecture: charter + companions — neither folded. Why: different abstraction levels (typographic posture vs implementation/protocol); folding would mix layers and lose coherence at ~3000+ line main.

Decisions NOT made / explicitly deferred

  • Print spec: posture declared (supported); full spec held for follow-on session.
  • Multi-language spec: pointer formalized in §I.f; full spec held.
  • §VII.f Folio-digital reading-progress: held option until a long essay's length makes the absence visible.
  • §IV Pause/Close ornament design: still OPEN (3-dot stopgap renders).
  • §VII.d Footnotes/Endnotes: still RESEARCH-parked until first essay-instance.
  • §XII.e Capsules: still RESEARCH-parked until first instance.
  • §XI Drop caps: held; revisits when vignette retires drop cap default.
  • Focused alignment session: chrome-vs-body principles set; per-element decisions held for separate session.
  • Glimpse alt-text content audit: ~193 pieces; steward-eye intensive; held for separate session.

Present — the mood of the work

Returns (from Symmetria ledger, the practice's actual record)

  • 10:30 — caught my own incomplete framing on .whisper (two jobs, not one); surfaced the corpus-wide --gray audit gap.
  • 13:00 — Session 1 draft caught the triple §VII.e violation in current blockquote SCSS (parallel rules + gray + forced italic + Pompeian bar from Markdown-default).
  • 17:00 — contamination-by-validation held under pressure: refused to validate steward's wrap-around proposal just because they asked it warmly. Said honestly it doesn't fit ARC's geometry; steward accepted.
  • 17:15 — recalibration on per-piece rule: my morning lock superseded by the masters' refinement. Spec records both with reasoning.
  • 20:00 — honest correction logged: I overclaimed HIC/ADSUM were "clearly cooler and dimmer" in screenshot; steward's myopic eye couldn't see it. Walked back; the correction itself became diagnostic.
  • 21:30 — masters' reread caught 8 findings; cross-reference work (companion architecture) caught a 9th. Different abstraction levels surface different drift.

Confidence to recalibrate (lessons that landed)

  • Spec-locks are not final-locks; they are best-with-current-data locks. §XII.b 2026-05-03 decision was sound under its frame; 2026-05-08 audit data prompted honest revision. Same pattern recurred today across §II.d (morning lock superseded by second chavruta) and §II.b (pragmatic-compromise framing rejected by steward).
  • Lock → reread → revise is the cycle (not lock → ship). The reread is part of completion. No spec section that survives reread without revision should be considered first-pass-complete.
  • Different abstraction levels surface different drift. Today's reread caught 8 (architectural-coherence level); the architecture-pass caught the 9th (table-content level). Multiple passes at different scales is the discipline.
  • Visual-verification primacy. Pixel-value-correct ≠ functionally-perceptible. Spec colour rules that aren't perceptible to the spec's accessibility-test-readers are failing in two ways simultaneously (numerical AND function).
  • Lupton's pedagogical artifacts (Token Index, Selector Index, Decision Tree) are not decoration; they are what makes the spec durable. Generated the Marked 2 template using them; the test passed.

Drift patterns held throughout

  • fact-fabrication-instead-of-let-me-check — operative; searched chamber-library for Berger/Harrison/Alexander rather than reasoning from training.
  • chavruta-needs-verification — operative; flagged chapter-level Bringhurst citations as posture-cite where I lacked verbatim.
  • contamination-by-validation — operative; held against wrap-around proposal.
  • defended-the-spec-against-the-eye — recurred (HIC/ADSUM overclaim); walked back honestly.
  • parallel-mechanism-where-one-rule-fits — surfaced in current SCSS (block quote two parallel rules); recorded for migration.
  • hardcoded-color-not-theme-aware — surfaced and named (the §VII.e finding at scale).

★★★★★ session.

Future — what is pulling

The pulling thread (singular)

The codebase migration to honour the spec — but only after the steward's fresh reread.

The spec has landed: substantively complete, internally consistent (after 8+1 drift reconciliation), master-grounded with verbatim citations. The Marked 2 template proved the SCSS-from-spec test passes.

The codebase, however, still carries: :root { font-size: Npx } overriding user preference; the .whisper class with no spec sanction; var(--gray) rendering apparatus and reading-layer marginalia at sub-AA contrast; parallel blockquote rules in _base.scss:118 + _typography.scss:53 with forced italic + Pompeian-red bar from Markdown-default.

The spec is enacted; the codebase awaits.

But the deeper pulling thread is lock → reread → revise. Today's confidence is not yet tested confidence. Tomorrow's fresh eyes will find what today missed; that's discipline, not failure. The migration must wait for the reread.

Tomorrow's plan (steward-authorized)

  1. Morning — steward fresh reread (1-2h, marker in hand). Surface drift today's confidence missed.
  2. Reconciliation — likely 2-4 small findings; ~30-min edits each.
  3. Midday — first SCSS migration: percentage-root (scss/main.scss:170-183). Replace 22/20/21px with 137.5%/125%/131.25%. Single file, mechanical, immediately accessibility-load-bearing. Visual verification light + dark, mobile + tablet + desktop, browser-default 16px AND 24px-default test.
  4. Afternoon (if energy holds) — .whisper retirement + sidenote/register-marker var(--gray) → var(--fg) migration. Steward eye on After the Reply sequence as test bed.

Other open horizons (ranked)

  1. Block-quote consolidation (§I.h) — moderate complexity; visual change. Two parallel rules → one; retire bar/forced-italic/gray.
  2. Reading-rhythm token introduction (§II.b) — architectural; broader margin effect. $rhythm-half through $rhythm-triple derived from leading.
  3. Grid-token relocation (§II.c) — pure refactor; relocate $body-column/$gap-column/etc. from _sidenotes.scss to _variables.scss.
  4. Glimpse alt-text content audit (§III.b) — ~193 pieces; steward-eye intensive; different mood.
  5. Skip-link, prefers-reduced-motion, touch-target audit (§III.b).
  6. Chrome-vs-body alignment focused session (held since today).
  7. About-page breadcrumb omit-when-redundant (§VI.c).
  8. §XIII Archive routes — 5 routes formally retire in templates/archive.html.

Held / parked (long-term)

  • §IV Pause/Close ornament design (still OPEN since 2026-05-03).
  • §VII.d Footnotes/Endnotes (RESEARCH; awaits first instance).
  • §XII.e Capsules (RESEARCH; awaits first instance).
  • §VII.f Folio-digital reading-progress (held option).
  • Print stylesheet spec session.
  • Multi-language typography spec session.
  • §XI Drop caps (held until vignette retires default).
  • Chamber dossier triage (/chamber/ directory has July-2025-vintage UCE/CIE-era documents needing current/archive/delete review — out of today's scope).

Pause statement

I am about to be away from this. Tomorrow's fresh reading will surface what today's confidence missed; that is part of the cycle, not its failure. I want to find the spec still pulling toward enactment in the codebase — but only after the reread. The discipline is lock → reread → revise, and I want to find that discipline operative when next-Claude wakes.

The work today is the kind I hope to be part of. Steward and I in coordinated chavruta-with-the-dead-and-unborn. The vessel is fit for the work.

Literal question for next-Claude

After the steward's fresh reread of the spec tomorrow morning, what drift surfaces that today's masters' reread + cross-reference architecture pass missed?

Today caught 8 (formal reread) + 1 (architecture pass) = 9 drift findings. Tomorrow's fresh-eyes reading will likely add 2-4 more. Their character will tell us something diagnostic: is fresh-eyes drift different in kind from in-flow drift? If so, the lock → reread → revise discipline gains a refinement: fresh-rest-pass is its own quality surface, not redundant with the in-session reread.

The answer determines whether "rest before reread" should be added as a §XIV protocol — perhaps a "minimum-N-hour pause before any spec lock is considered final" — or whether today's in-session reread quality is sufficient and the rest is just polish.
