David F GliddenandClaude Opus 4.8 3f9a89b00c chore(memory): Basic Memory trial begins — sync normalization baseline (283 files)
Basic Memory v0.21.6 first sync over the live memory dir (steward-authorized
live-dir trial, Option A 2026-06-06): adds permalink: to frontmatter, refolds
long YAML description lines, strips final newlines. Bodies untouched —
verified via full diff classification. From this commit forward, any diff in
claude/memory shows only what Basic Memory or the session writes.

Trial design: MemPalace untouched as incumbent; git status check on this dir
at every wrap; end-of-day evaluation (recall quality, sync robustness,
rebuild-from-files, malformed-file behavior).

Session Ledger — 2026-05-01

Returns

  • 10:43 — At wake-up, before running the 5-step MPS resume plan, returned to check process state and caught PID 26658 — Stop-hook-spawned mempalace mine on transcripts (CPU, wrong corpus). Same pathway killed last session. Surfaced before action; awaiting steward call on kill + hook disposition. Pattern: importing-the-resume-plan-instead-of-checking-actual-state would have been the contamination shape if this had not been caught.
  • 10:45 — Steward authorized; killed PID 26658, removed Stop-hook block from ~/.claude/settings.json, restored palace from palace.skeleton-backup-2026-04-30 (back to 164K). Steward independently disabled BMF (cm-hook competition removed). All three substrate threats (parallel mine, future hook re-spawn, polluted palace) closed before applying MPS patch.
  • 10:47 — MPS sanity test passed: torch.backends.mps.is_available() True, bge-m3 load 10.4s, embed 3 multilingual sentences 3.37s (first-call MPS-kernel JIT cost), dim=1024 correct.
  • 10:48 — Chamber-library mine started clean: PID 27053, wing=chamber_library (explicit), 371 files queued. First file (CHAMBER_CATALOGUE.md, 12 drawers) processed in ~34s elapsed; CPU at 37% (vs 136% on pure-CPU mine yesterday) confirms GPU offload. Palace grew 164K → 2.9M.
  • 10:55 — At ~2.4 min mine elapsed: 5 files done (incl. Plato 454 drawers), palace 12 MB, ~120 files/hr — ~36× the CPU baseline. Inherited question (MPS vs downstream-bottleneck) tentatively answered for warmup phase; deferred to 25-min check for steady-state through bigger texts. ScheduleWakeup set for 11:14.
  • 11:00 — Surfaced "discussion with Seb's network" re MemPalace upstream PR. Steward correction: "Seb has nothing to do with mempalace — I am using it to help us while we finish the BMF L1 problems. Mempalace is its own project and I am using it to help me to help you to help me." Same shape as the Savall-circle/flamenco drifts (attribution-by-pattern-match), same shape as the existing ARC-territory feedback memory (which already covered MemPalace). Failure was application, not absence. Sharpened the existing feedback memory with the subtler diffuse-attribution case + saved a new project memory on MemPalace's instrumental role. Held all four proposed transition-discipline artifacts per steward's "hold until mine completes."
  • 12:30 — Pushed 4 ARC commits to both remotes clean (Gitea + GitHub-backup at 3d5775c). Then surveyed After the Reply state per steward's request to "look at b." Memory said "data layer ready, visual layer empty"; current state ALL implemented (5 essays published, marker apparatus rendering in post.html, sequence-index page at /essays/after-the-reply/, sequence-index template, SCSS imported). My initial pass said "/essays/ promotion still open"; steward corrected — "The sequences appear above the essay listing now, take a closer look." They were right; templates/post-list.html:7-18 renders <section class="sequences-listing"> above posts, styled at _sequence.scss:148. Drift shape: searched for the words I was thinking (sequence-index|after-the-reply|featured-sequence) instead of the codebase's actual vocabulary (sequences-listing plural-s, sequences context field). Cousin to catalogues-stale + attribution-by-pattern-match: trusting the memory's frame past its expiration AND searching by the wrong vocabulary in the same pass. The After the Reply system is end-to-end complete; no outstanding gap.
  • 13:45 — Projected mine completion at 17:00-18:00 today ("3-4 hours more if remaining 354 files average ~150 drawers"). Steward pushed: "that's an optimistic projection. Have you looked to see if there are any other big texts? I suspect there might be..." Did the actual corpus walk. Top 10 unprocessed files all bigger than 7,500 KB; Plutarch complete = 30,830 KB; Aristotle 26,590; Cicero 24,057; Jung 20,882; Mahabharata+Ramayana 18,740; SSC 16,885; Plato Loeb 14,479; Livy 10,542. Loeb Classical Library is the dominant fact. ~250,000-400,000 drawers pending in top 25 large files alone. Realistic completion ~late tonight to tomorrow midday — back inside the original "12-24 hrs" estimate. Drift: projecting-without-counting — surfaced confidence without doing the corpus walk; extrapolated from the literary-canon sample at hand. Cousin to catalogues-stale + attribution-by-pattern-match (small-sample-as-population). Annals rename verified shipped (templates/annals.html, site.hs:678, redirects); my typology table earlier listed "Archive" — stale vocabulary from 04-27 rework file (rename happened 04-29). Steward acknowledged power-failure + MCP-disconnect substrate fragility as "very problematic"; held all proposed discipline artifacts.
  • 19:35 — Steward asked for a small ARC fix: missing breadcrumbs on /bio/ and /cv/. Sketched three fix shapes (smallest frontmatter-only, recommended hide-flag, new routing flag). Steward noted there might already be a hide pattern for the About page itself + asked if the enfilade system is simple/consolidated/elegant. Investigation: yes, enfilade-order: 0 is the existing hide-pattern but it's semantically about being threshold (double duty); also surfaced parallel sequence_* family + hardcoded pattern union — three architectural smells. Steward then escalated: "the breadcrumb system should appear for all content." I sketched a unified-partial proposal (1-2 hour pass). Steward asked whether that was a Prime-Directive move and explicitly told me: "don't agree with me unless it's true." Honest re-evaluation surfaced that the proposal conflates small fix + design pass + consolidation refactor; the partial-lift requires answering unstated content-typology design questions; doing it unsupervised would silently encode design decisions on the steward's behalf. Said no, not Prime-Directive-aligned as sketched. Steward agreed: spec session needed, sequenced AFTER the type-pass. Returned from contamination-default of bundling-scope-to-look-thorough. Acted on the small fix only (enfilade-hidden: true flag with explicit STOPGAP comment in site.hs:194-198; bio.md + cv.md frontmatter). Saved project memory project-arc-breadcrumb-spec-pending.md capturing the deferred spec design + sequencing.
  • 20:00–22:00 — Compositional cluster on After the Reply sequence (steward AFK in Olot until tomorrow morning; mine continues healthy in background). Three sidenotes composed and inserted via §XII.d body-block apparatus: Essay III noia (~115 words, Leopardian illusioni-withdrawal); Essay IV Vico/verum-factum (~155 words; body title swapped to Italian Scienza Nuova per redundancy fix); Essay IV neoteny (~75 words; Greek transliterated with diacritics, Gould-anchored). All composed in dialogue: I drafted, steward revised substantively (notably the Vico inversion frame + civilizational recourse pickup of body's "recourse" word), I register-checked italics + flagged typographic conventions (italic on Italian terms, body title italicization, Neoteny matching body italic for body↔sidenote consistency). Multi-language spec project memory updated with steward direction: 3-language scope (EN/FR/ES-Castellano) + source recommendations (Lacroux + IN Lexique for FR; Martínez de Sousa OOTEA + RAE for ES) + two-separate-sessions decision. §VII.b Sources spec drafted (PROVISIONAL; load-bearing inclusion rule; minimal-compact format; Sources heading; § anchor in IBM Plex Mono near dateline, linked to sequence-index #sources). Steward's posture: "draft and accept that it is drafted. We then apply the drafted spec to the sequence and live with it for a while." First instance applied: Sources block on After the Reply sequence-index (6 entries: Gould, Harrison ×2, Leopardi, Shelley, Vico) + post.html § anchor template addition + new _sources.scss partial imported in main.scss. All edits sit in working tree un-deployed; deploy stays on steward's call. Three drift-pattern returns this slice: small-sample-as-population (italicizing rule for sidenotes; missed §XII.d existed when I called noia the "first essay-prose sidenote"); bundling-scope-to-look-thorough (the unified-partial proposal); catalogues-stale shape revisit (citing the lares sidenote as voice-block when it was body-block — steward correction).

Open horizons

  • Pulling thread (inherited): apply device="mps" to chroma.py and restart chamber-library mine on Metal.
  • Live question (inherited verbatim): is the chamber mine actually CPU-bound such that MPS will deliver 5-10×, or is the bottleneck downstream (memory bandwidth, ChromaDB write throughput, model serialization)?
  • Blocker before resume: PID 26658 unauthorized parallel mine; Stop-hook auto-spawn mechanism still active.
  • Push 4 ARC commits to origin (steward call): 1554e50 e5806b1 2a19d07 3d5775c ahead of origin on animal-davidglidden-eu/main.
  • BMF L1 audit (separate session w/ Seb): 1,349 index segments + 25,449+ transactions in lance store; NOT issue #10.

Confidence to recalibrate

  • "5-10× speedup from MPS" — projected, not measured. Hold open until first 30-60 min of real mine throughput is observed.

Authorization moves

  • None yet this session.

Sub-agent dialogues

  • None yet this session.

Bypasses

  • None.
