Querying the typography palace directly

What it is

A separate MemPalace at ~/.mempalace/palace-chamber-typography holding the chamber-library typography corpus.

Why it matters — and the drift it prevents

The MCP (mcp__mempalace__* tools) is bound to ~/.mempalace/palace-memory per ~/.mempalace/config.json. That palace holds session diaries, claude-code KG, and general assistant memory — not the typography corpus. Asking the MCP a Bringhurst-shaped question returns conversation transcripts about Bringhurst, not Bringhurst's own words.

When the steward asks "what do the masters say about X" or "check the typography corpus" or any framework-typography spec question where the masters' own prose would settle the matter — the chamber-typography palace is the right room. Reaching for the MCP-bound default palace in that situation is a recurring drift; see [[feedback-querying-default-palace-when-question-belongs-to-specific-palace]] for the discipline.

How to query (CLI)

The mempalace CLI accepts --palace to target a specific palace database. The --palace flag goes before the subcommand:

Default result count is small; pass --results 10 (or more) for substantive sampling. Results show:

• Source: the chamber-library filename (e.g. bringhurst_elements_style.md) — useful for follow-on direct reads
• Match: cosine=X.XXX bm25=Y.YYY
• Snippet of the matched drawer

Switching the MCP to this palace (if ever needed)

The MCP reads ~/.mempalace/config.json's palace_path at startup. To switch the MCP to the typography palace, edit that key and restart the MCP server. The mempalace_reconnect MCP tool only refreshes the current palace connection — it does not switch palaces.

In practice: keep the MCP on palace-memory (session continuity), use the CLI when the typography corpus is the right room. Two paths, two purposes; do not switch the MCP just for one-off queries.

Sample query shapes (for the kind of question this palace answers)

• "What does Bringhurst say about parenthetical interruption?" → search "spaced en dash parenthetical" then read the bringhurst_elements_style.md drawers verbatim
• "How does Tschichold treat lists?" → search "list" --results 15 then filter mentally to Tschichold source
• "Hochuli on detail punctuation" → search "Hochuli detail punctuation" (cross-source) or read Detail_in_Typography_Jost_Hochuli directly via Read

Often the more efficient move once the palace points to the right source file is to switch from search to direct Read against the chamber-library file — the search names the source; the read returns the full context.
