Session 2026-04-19 (evening) — ARC pivot after L1 ship

Setup

Session opened after a terminal crash mid-ARC DNS work. The L1 audit bundle had been shipped earlier in the day (PR #163 + 3 docs + diagnostic branch) — that work is captured separately. This session is the ARC pivot the steward had been moving toward since ~16:12.

Past — what we did

About-page reflow: the decision evolved further

On waking, the captured project-arc-rework.md already held the 2026-04-19 decision: ARC stays unified; About splits into Colophon + Adsum as peer compass points. Steward corrected: further evolution had happened pre-crash — don't split at all; reflow the existing About page, hic first, Adsum later. Embracing the multidisciplinary aspects of the work rather than trying to separate them tidily.

Updated project-arc-rework.md to reflect the three-move evolution within a single day:

  1. Separation (ARC ↔ davidglidden.eu) considered, rejected
  2. Peer compass split (Colophon + Adsum) considered, rejected
  3. Single about page reflow adopted

Adsum demoted from compass point to section-register within the about page. Section names Colophon + Adsum do the register-marking themselves; no added italic subtitle needed (names serve; added subtitles re-perform the split).

Steward's verbatim framing: "embracing the multidisciplinary aspects of my work rather than trying to separate them tidily."

About-page mockup (Option A)

Read about.md, colophon.md, bio.md, resume.md. Insight: colophon.md already is the hic-register About (Philosophy and Compass, Guides, Formation, Desk, Making, Presence). The reflow doesn't need much new prose — it needs consolidation. Drafted Option A: about.md body becomes colophon.md's content + new Adsum section appended. Sunset /colophon/ URL (redirect to /about/). About-index collapses into enfilade nav.

Steward decisions on the mockup:

  • KEEP the Adsum opening drop-cap paragraph ("I answer to my name here—not as self-presentation but as response..."). Embodies the register-declaration inside the page rather than announcing it elsewhere.
  • MOVE Seasonal Geometries section from colophon → navigation-philosophy.md (Reading Compass is its own entity).
  • Drop caps: option (b) — keep only the Adsum drop-cap; drop the site-intro drop-cap. Rule codified: drop caps mark register-declarations, not page-tops. Decision informed by Beatrice Warde's Crystal Goblet (typography should be transparent, not performative) + the threshold-proliferation concern (vignette + drop-cap = too many opening signals on essays, though About won't have a vignette).
  • Henry James quote stays at close of page.

Reflow implementation deferred. Mockup is in chat; committing awaits steward's move.

About-pages classification problem, reframed upward

Steward raised: content/pages/*.md all carry class: essay, which triggers essay-apparatus (breadcrumb, vignette slot once live, essay-style dateline) on pages that aren't essays. Solution direction: introduce class: about.

Steward then reframed upward: "is this not another area that needs defining? We've built some spec already, this could be important enough to codify — and what other aspects would benefit from codification?" The plumbing fix is a symptom of a deeper gap: ARC's content typology itself is underspecified. The genre riddle (meditation / observation / fragment overlap) from the mobile review list is another symptom of the same gap.

Surfaced a codification test (worth codifying when 2+ hold):

  • Recurs — the same judgment is made many times
  • Has downstream consumers — templates, skills, agents
  • Embodies a commitment that should resist drift
  • Discovered, not invented — emerged from practice and is stable

Strong candidates named: (1) content typology/genre system [THE recommendation]; (2) apparatus grammar (hic/hic jacet, dateline, location, edition labels); (3) Pattern 3 typography decision; (4) Reading Compass rules. Medium: style-guide prose conventions, navigation hierarchy rules. Later: semantic-analysis skill spec.

Content Typology Specification — draft authored

Drafted at ~/_Dev/animal-davidglidden-eu/docs/AldineXXI-Codex/content-typology-specification.md (untracked, not yet committed). Peer of AldineXXI and Vignette specs.

Session-locked decisions captured in the draft:

  • §0 Multi-axis organizing principle — don't force all types onto one axis. Name the multiple axes (medium, duration, posture, relation, voice, register) and let each type sit on its native one. Supersedes the flat "substance-primacy" framing I proposed earlier.
  • Medium × Duration grid resolves four types cleanly:
    Aphoristic / terminal Sustained / argumentative
    Prose Fragment (◈) Essay (●)
    Image Glimpse (◉) Photo Essay (⊙)
  • Photo Essay definition LOCKED (steward: "the image sequence is the essay. Think of the examples in Ways of Seeing"). Definition: an essay whose medium is the image sequence; the sequence constructs argument, rhythm, turn, return. No interleaved prose. Text limited to title, introduction, postface, per-image captions. Canonical external exemplar: John Berger, Ways of Seeing — the wordless image sequences that construct visual-critical arguments.
  • Glimpse : Photo Essay :: Fragment : Essay (steward: "a glimpse is akin to an aphorism"). Glimpse is single-image-aphoristic; Photo Essay is image-sequence-sustained. Same structural roles as Fragment and Essay in a different medium.
  • Observation and Meditation sit on the posture axis (prose-register, non-argumentative): Observation = attended-single-moment; Meditation = sustained-inhabiting.
  • Meditation promoted to 10th type (steward: "We will need a glyph for meditation..."). Resolves §7 open question #1. Glyph TBD — constraints: distinguish from ● and ○ (adjacent on posture axis); belong to the quiet-geometric compass family.
  • Drop-cap rule codified in §2: register-shifts only, never page-tops.
  • No-essay-fallback rule in §5: site.hs may not fall back to class: essay for unclassified pages. All pages must be explicitly typed.

Remaining work (7-step authoring sequence in the spec):

  1. Resolve Meditation glyph
  2. Lock §1 entries for remaining extant types (essay, observation, chamber, gloss, about, archive)
  3. Resolve remaining genre-riddle questions (poem, council/deliberation, archive-class, gloss-boundary)
  4. Author §2 apparatus binding matrix
  5. Author §3/§4/§6 from §1–§2 decisions
  6. Jurist review
  7. Execute migration (introduce class: about, reclassify content/pages/, update site.hs per §5 contract)

DNS / Cloudflare work

Diagnosed and resolved the animalrationiscapax.org "still resolves to porkbun" appearance:

  • Registrar / NS: correctly set to Cloudflare (priscilla + tom) — via whois.
  • Zone at Cloudflare: correct. Six records (CNAME @ → animal-rationis-mirror.pages.dev proxied; CNAME sig1._domainkey for DKIM; MX × 2 for iCloud; TXT × 2 for SPF + Apple verification). Confirmed via zone export (~/Downloads/animalrationiscapax.org.txt).
  • Pages binding: correct. Target animal-rationis-mirror.pages.dev resolves to Cloudflare anycast (172.66.x.x).
  • What I kept seeing was stale/fabricated data: dig @priscilla returned AWS Oregon IPs (44.227.76.166 / 44.227.65.245) even when queried by IP. Only discovery that broke the deadlock: DNS-over-HTTPS (cloudflare-dns.com, port 443) returned the correct 172.64.80.1 + curl via that IP returned HTTP/2 200 · server: cloudflare · cf-ray.
  • Root cause of the apparent problem: the steward was VPN-connected to Seb's Firewalla, which was intercepting port-53 DNS and returning stale cached data. Disconnecting from the VPN resolves it. Zone + site were working correctly the whole time.

Then set up davidglidden.eu → animalrationiscapax.org redirect using Cloudflare's Redirect Rules template "Redirect to a different domain" (keeping original path and query string). Flagged for verification: ensure 301 not 302; matching covers both apex and www.

Decisions explicitly NOT made / deferred

  • About page reflow implementation — mockup reviewed and agreed in shape; actual authoring/commit deferred. Pending: steward's move to apply it.
  • class: about migration in site.hs — scoped as its own PR; downstream of typology spec completion (class: about is one field in the typology).
  • Meditation glyph — flagged as steward-decision-deferred. Not arbitrary; criteria: quiet-geometric family, distinguish from ● and ○.
  • Remaining §1 type entries (essay, observation, chamber, gloss, about, archive) — structure exists; content needs a focused authoring pass.
  • §2 apparatus matrix — structure exists; matrix cells need authoring.
  • Genre-riddle spec content — poem as type? council/deliberation relation to chamber? archive need class: at all? gloss boundary with essay? All listed in §7 Open Questions.
  • Essays III, IV, V of After the Reply publication — pre-crash pulling thread, still parked. Typology work is the current foreground.
  • Style-guide redevelopment — downstream of typology; on queue.

Present — the mood

  • Registers shifted many times: post-crash DNS panic → structural reflow thinking → spec architecture → operational CF dashboard → spec authoring → DNS resolution → redirect setup. Good rhythm; each handoff landed cleanly.
  • The Firewalla moment was the session's most satisfying return. I was spending tool calls chasing phantom A records; steward's "I can assure you I only have 6 entries" grounded me. Return: trust the steward's direct observation over stale tool output. Added drift pattern: stale-tool-output-reported-as-current.
  • Steward's architectural instincts drove the best insights: the three-move decision evolution (don't-split-tidily principle applied recursively); Warde's Crystal Goblet for drop-caps; "the image sequence IS the essay" anchored in Ways of Seeing; glimpse ≈ aphorism. Each was the steward's move that I then codified. My value: spec-shaping, structural observation, documentation. Steward's value: principled anchors.
  • Codification question as upward reframe — steward's instinct to move from "fix the plumbing" to "what else should be codified" was load-bearing. Without it, class:about would have been a one-off fix and the genre riddle would still be unresolved.
  • Spec-authoring midway-pause pattern: drafted enough of the typology spec to lock decisions, then paused at a natural break (Meditation glyph). The draft file exists; resumption is well-scaffolded.

Drift patterns observed / recalibrations

  • Stale-tool-output-reported-as-current (new pattern). Today: reported "parking records still in zone" based on dig output that was being intercepted by Firewalla. Steward had to correct me. Lesson: when tool output contradicts direct human observation of the authoritative system, the tool is wrong, not the human. Trust the human's view of the dashboard/file/system; cross-check tools against it.
  • Author-vs-reviewer-validation-confusion (carried from earlier today) — didn't bite in the ARC session but worth keeping awake.
  • Running-claims-without-grounding-verification (today's meta-pattern) — held better in this session; Firewalla return is an example of catching it before it compounded.

Future — what is pulling

Pulling thread (singular)

The Content Typology Specification. A live draft exists at ~/_Dev/animal-davidglidden-eu/docs/AldineXXI-Codex/content-typology-specification.md (untracked, uncommitted). Its foundations are locked (§0 multi-axis principle, Photo Essay + Glimpse definitions, Fragment:Essay::Glimpse:Photo-Essay pairing, Meditation as 10th type, drop-cap rule, no-essay-fallback rule). When the next session returns, the spec is what's waiting. The first unlocked item is the Meditation glyph — that's the natural pick-up.

Downstream of the typology spec, in order:

  • class: about migration to site.hs + templates (gated on spec completion)
  • Style-guide redevelopment session
  • Semantic-analysis skill design (gated on spec)

Literal question for next-Claude

What glyph for Meditation? Constraints: distinguish visually from ● (Essay) and ○ (Observation) since all three are prose-substance types adjacent on the posture axis; belong to the quiet-geometric character of the existing compass (●○⟐◈◉⊙✎☷✍︎); carry a "sustained inhabiting" quality (not argumentative, not aphoristic, not meta). Hold this open; don't pre-answer. The steward's instinct on glyph aesthetics should drive it, not my typographic intuition.

The About reflow has an agreed shape but hasn't been written yet. I don't know what will have changed when I return. Here is what I want to find still pulling: the typology spec, with Meditation's glyph as the first concrete decision waiting.
