David F GliddenandClaude Opus 4.8 3f9a89b00c chore(memory): Basic Memory trial begins — sync normalization baseline (283 files)
Basic Memory v0.21.6 first sync over the live memory dir (steward-authorized
live-dir trial, Option A 2026-06-06): adds permalink: to frontmatter, refolds
long YAML description lines, strips final newlines. Bodies untouched —
verified via full diff classification. From this commit forward, any diff in
claude/memory shows only what Basic Memory or the session writes.

Trial design: MemPalace untouched as incumbent; git status check on this dir
at every wrap; end-of-day evaluation (recall quality, sync robustness,
rebuild-from-files, malformed-file behavior).

name: Session 2026-05-14 — Readings spec landed (15th content type, commit 5792286), PDF/Print posture session planned, chamber cruft audit revealed 47% needs work, mempalace mine still running through Phase 5, context clearing with L1 recall-fix as pulling thread description: Substantial morning session continuing from yesterday's bge-m3 mine. Resolved gloss/commentary form question with Readings as 15th ARC type, ratified by Genette + Carruthers (read directly). Audited chamber: 186/399 files need work. Built dedicated session plan for both PDF/Print postures. Disabled Stop + PreCompact mempalace hooks (settings.json backup preserved) before context clear, so the running mine isn't interrupted. Pulling thread for cleared context: L1 recall-fix focused session per the saved plan. type: project originSessionId: a5411fd1-4a96-43e7-aa1a-1a50d8951a8f

Inherited state at session start

Came in from yesterday with the bge-m3 chamber-library mine running on PR #442 branch — Phase 5 was at file 186/430. Mempalace concurrent-write lock fix #1162 NOT present; querying mempalace during mining risks HNSW corruption (the 2026-05-03 broken-mine session is the empirical case). MEMORY.md explicitly held this warning.

What we did today (in order)

Morning arc — L1 quagmire diagnosis + audit-script preparation

  • Status check on mine: Phase 5 progressing, ~22h ahead
  • Steward asked for L1 quagmire diagnosis given recent inactivity on April 19 H-issues. Surfaced: team has been WIDENING L1 (circles, BBF, peer features) rather than DEEPENING recall correctness. Four H-issues from April 19 still unaddressed; recent commits don't touch them.
  • Steward proposed: "If it were up to you and I to fix this, could we do so on a separate branch and then do a PR?" — yes. Discussed governance ([HARDENING] under CLAUDE.md), scope, Peter-pressure dynamic, one-issue-per-PR discipline to bring Seb relief not load
  • Saved L1 recall-fix focused session plan (project-L1-recall-fix-session-plan.md) — half-day shape, H2 (vector returns 0) chosen first as most empirically diagnosable
  • Pivoted to mempalace queryability discussion; I proposed building per-tradition retrieval helper; steward caught me on coupling vs surprise — pre-filter forecloses cross-tradition surprise (the whole point of mempalace). Refined to stratified-retrieval-with-merge proposal
  • Steward then asked: "have we missed something hiding in plain sight?" — caught me using only search (cosine) when mempalace exposes multi-modal toolset (search + kg_query + find_tunnels + traverse + taxonomy). The CLAUDE.md "use the full toolset" directive had been in context the entire session and not applied. New drift pattern saved: feedback-warning-in-context-still-launched.md (had-the-warning-in-context-and-still-launched-the-thing-it-warned-against — steward caught me launching MCP probe against running mine)
  • Built audit_chamber_queryability.py at ~/_Dev/chamber-library/scripts/ — 50+ line probe script invoking mempalace MCP tool handlers in-process (no MCP server needed); safety-check refuses to run while mempalace processes are alive; tests 5 designed queries (silent reading → Saenger; place + intimacy → Bachelard; craft + hand → Sennett; image + word → Berger; pattern language → Alexander) across search, kg_query, find_tunnels, traverse. Held for execution post-mine.

Mid-morning arc — chamber cleanup + Brown gloss preparation

  • Cleaned 21 AppleDouble (._*) files + 8 stale README.md files from chamber tree (21 → 0; 8 → 0; 421 → 399 chamber .md files)
  • Steward caught me again: I'd recommended composing a new root README; he asked for honest opinion ("not necessarily what I want to hear"); I argued AGAINST a new README because the chamber's purpose lives in 4 authoritative places already + staleness risk + would mine as high-cosine target for meta-queries (today's mass-dilution lesson). Steward agreed; READMEs deleted.
  • Cruft audit revealed substrate state: 162 CLEAN / 49 near-clean / 124 CLEANUP / 62 severe RECONVERT. 47% of chamber needs work. Load-bearing voices in the severe bucket: Bachelard ×5 (full rêverie cycle), Arendt ×3, Adorno Minima Moralia (worst at 2.19 cruft/line), Heidegger, Plato, Alexander Pattern Language (Alexandrian standard!), Lévi-Strauss Mythologiques 1-4. Caught one Arendt content-duplicate the morning dedup missed.
  • Saved project-chamber-cruft-restoration.md with the steward's framing as the standard: "between cleaning this and the better query tools that mcp will give us, the library and I could perhaps 'talk'"

Afternoon-equivalent arc — gloss vs commentary discovery and Readings spec

  • Steward presented draft of second Gloss: "The Obligating Word" — on Mandy Brown's Into the Gap (2026-05-09 Cardona)
  • Read Brown's essay via WebFetch; gave honest opinion on the gloss: ratified the writing as substantive ("pollution achieves what prohibition used to require"; "whose sleep is not already mortgaged to what they have done in the light"), flagged Section 2's "modesty or failure of nerve" as pointed-but-keep-it
  • Prepared the gloss as content/posts/2026-05-09-the-obligating-word.md, committed 82c2ba1 with class: gloss (held for review, not deployed)
  • Steward asked the catch question that resolved the arc: "Is what we just published pushing the limits of a gloss too far?" — yes; the Brown piece makes claims about Brown's essay as a whole, not about a passage. Structural diagnostic locked: gloss = passage-subject; commentary = work-subject
  • Discussed naming options (Commentary vs Commentarius vs Reading vs Readings); steward initially "lean commentary or readings"; steward asked if we needed a chavruta; I argued NO — the gloss/commentary distinction has a 1000-year named lineage (Glossa Ordinaria, Servius on Virgil, Aquinas on Aristotle); this is RECOVERY not invention; just decide
  • Steward authorized direct reading of Genette's Seuils (found in ~/Desktop/New texts may 2026/); pandoc-converted to /tmp/seuils_genette.md; surfaced three findings: (a) Genette names the paratexte/métatexte frontier explicitly as "l'absence de frontière qui ne sépare pas nettement"; (b) Borges via Genette: "une forme latérale de la critique" — geometry of the form is lateral; (c) commentaire is Genette's live working term, essai critique is his concrete form
  • Steward locked the name: "Agreed in readings." (plural — these are my readings, not the readings)
  • Surfaced Carruthers's Book of Memory — already in chamber + L1 memory-palace-study docs; steward asked: "what would reading Carruthers bring to our spec draft?" I gave honest assessment: depth not direction-change. He authorized "skim for sake of completeness." Read Ch 5 — meditatio / sollicitudo / "composition as gathering" / rimor / "two ways of reading" — and integrated into Readings entry
  • Steward catch on Meditation: "But we have meditation as a type already, just not meditation as direct commentary on a source." This was a precision intervention. Refined the §1 entry's definition + boundary rule to make clear: Meditation poses attention upon any object (including a source-passage) to surface insight; Readings poses attention specifically upon another author's work as a work — the work itself becomes the field of the piece. The test is not whether a source can be present (it can in both) but whether the source-work as such occupies the field. Carruthers's meditatio is a broader practice that both ARC types draw on differently.
  • Coupling vs separating sigil: steward chose separate. Glyph chosen: ☞︎ (manicule, U+261E + U+FE0E variation selector) — historical reader's pointing hand; pairs with ✎ (Gloss's quill) as read/write companions
  • Spec drafted and committed (5792286): content-typology-specification.md (§1 Readings entry inserted; gloss/readings pairing note; Initial catalogue table extended to entry 16); AldineXXI-specification.md (§V Content Types table with Readings row; "14 of 14" → "15 of 15"; §VI Reading Compass sigil table with ✎ + ☞︎ pair note; §XIII archive routes; companion-specs table). Held for review, not deployed.

Late arc — PDF/Print posture session planning

  • Steward proposed two-birds: prepare the spec as a PDF document, exercising the deferred Print/PDF posture spec
  • Pipeline discussion: XeLaTeX (mature, microtype is gold standard) vs Typst (modern, growing). Steward chose XeLaTeX with "do this properly once; revisit Typst when it overtakes LaTeX"
  • Confirmed installation state: pandoc 3.9, MacTeX 2026, 28 Plex variants in ~/Library/Fonts/, EB Garamond + SC OTF, Garamond Premier Pro (Adobe) as premium fallback, pdftoppm for image extraction. Optional: ImageMagick.
  • Steward identified the natural pairing: build BOTH postures in same session, render the Readings spec for PDF posture and use the same content rendered Print-posture to produce sample images for the AldineXXI page rewrite's Postures section
  • Saved project-arc-pdf-print-postures-session-plan.md — six-hour structure (install/scaffold → PDF posture template → critique/iterate → Print posture (twoside, Van de Graaf, asymmetric-always) → sample images → spec rough draft); micro-typography + polyglossia flagged as quality lifts

Context-clear preparation

  • Stop and PreCompact mempalace hooks DISABLED to prevent corruption of the still-running mine during context clear. Backup: ~/.claude/settings.json.backup-2026-05-14-pre-mine-completion. SessionStart/UserPromptSubmit/PostToolUse hooks (BMF/cm-hook.mjs, not mempalace) preserved.
  • MUST RESTORE the Stop + PreCompact hooks after mine completes and mempalace sync runs cleanly. The original Stop hook: /Users/davidglidden/_Dev/mempalace/hooks/mempal_save_hook.sh (timeout 30). The PreCompact: /Users/davidglidden/_Dev/mempalace/hooks/mempal_precompact_hook.sh (timeout 30). Restore via cp ~/.claude/settings.json.backup-2026-05-14-pre-mine-completion ~/.claude/settings.json.

Decisions locked today

  1. Readings as 15th ARC content type (LOCKED 2026-05-14, commit 5792286)
  2. Glyph: ☞︎ (manicule, U+261E + U+FE0E) — separate sigil, not coupled with Gloss
  3. Distinction from Meditation: structural test is "is the source-work the field of the piece" not "is a source present"
  4. XeLaTeX as the PDF pipeline (revisit Typst only if it overtakes for this domain)
  5. Both postures (PDF + Print) in one dedicated session with the Readings spec as test substrate
  6. One H-issue per PR for the L1 recall fix (bring Seb relief not load)
  7. Audit-first before any cruft-restoration investment (the audit is the falsification test for whether cleanup is the bottleneck)

Drift patterns named today (or carried over)

  • Warning-in-context-still-launched (named yesterday, saved today) — reading the safety warning at wake-up ≠ applying it at the moment of action
  • Cosine-as-only-tool when the toolset is multi-modal — overloaded search while CLAUDE.md explicitly named the full toolset
  • Conflating meditatio (Carruthers practice) with Meditation (ARC type) — steward caught; refined boundary rule
  • Composing-a-README-because-the-tree-has-one — steward caught me proposing a new root README when his honest opinion was "delete the stale ones"
  • Proposed-new-system-before-auditing-existing-tools — would have built per-tradition helper before checking what mempalace already exposes

Commits today

  • 5792286 spec(arc): add Readings as 15th content type — gloss/readings pair

Memory files written/updated today

  • feedback-warning-in-context-still-launched.md (drift pattern from yesterday's MCP probe attempt)
  • project-chamber-cruft-restoration.md (47% of chamber needs work; "the library and I could perhaps 'talk'" as standard)
  • project-gloss-vs-commentary-distinction.md (UPDATED with Genette + Carruthers resolution + Readings naming)
  • project-arc-pdf-print-postures-session-plan.md (new; dedicated session plan)
  • session-2026-05-14-readings-spec-and-l1-handoff.md (this file)
  • MEMORY.md index updated to reflect spec amendment LANDED status and new project memories

Pulling thread for cleared next session

L1 recall-fix focused session per project-L1-recall-fix-session-plan.md.

Steward will clear context after reading this wrap-up. The cleared session should:

  1. Read the L1 fix plan (self-contained, ~1500 words)
  2. Read the L1 audit docs from April 19 (per the plan's pre-session reading list)
  3. Confirm H2 (vector returns 0) still broken in current main
  4. Write PENDING-N proposal with reproduction evidence
  5. Await steward authorization
  6. On AUTHORIZE → branch fix/h2-vector-recall-correctness, spec amendment first, failing test, minimal fix, PR

The L1 work doesn't touch mempalace; the still-running mine is unaffected by L1 session activity.

Critical pickup state

  • Mempalace mine still running: Phase 5, advancing through continental theory tail (last checked ~278/430 around mid-morning; will be further along when steward returns); ETA later today
  • DO NOT TOUCH MEMPALACE via MCP or CLI until: (a) the launcher script exits with "PHASE 5 exit=0", (b) mempalace sync runs cleanly, (c) the targeted phenomenology re-mine for Bachelard/Weil/Gadamer runs
  • Stop + PreCompact hooks disabled. Restore from ~/.claude/settings.json.backup-2026-05-14-pre-mine-completion after the mine cleanly completes.
  • The Brown post (content/posts/2026-05-09-the-obligating-word.md) still has class: gloss — reclassification to class: readings waits until SCSS partial + footer-compass route are also ready; that's a follow-on commit, not in scope for the L1 session
  • The Reading Compass sigil table now lists ☞︎ Readings but the footer-compass.html template hasn't been updated to add the route. Spec-vs-template lag; will be resolved when the Readings-execution session happens.

Open questions for future-Claude

  1. Will PR #442's branch hold through the rest of the continental-theory tail (heavy files: Habermas, Foucault, Derrida, Mauss, Bourdieu, Lévi-Strauss arriving now) without HNSW corruption? The 20+ hours so far suggest yes, but the load increases as Phase 5 hits the heaviest files.
  2. Did the H2 vector-recall issue still reproduce in current main, or has some adjacent change silently fixed/changed it since April 19? The L1 session's investigation phase answers this.
  3. What does the chamber-queryability audit actually find when run post-mine? Specifically: is the KG populated for chamber content entities (i.e., does kg_query("Saenger") return rich facts), or is the KG mostly session-level entities? The answer determines whether the multi-modal-tool approach pays off.
  4. For the PDF posture session: which Van de Graaf ratio variant? Classic canon (1:1:2:2) or Tschichold-refined? Chamber masters (Tschichold's Form of the Book, Bringhurst's Elements) have the answer.
