David F GliddenandClaude Opus 5 c2df868104 [FIX] Repair 39 files' frontmatter — including 3 I damaged an hour earlier
The 2026-06-06 normalization sweep (3f9a89b, 283 files) prepended a stray
permalink-only frontmatter block to 39 memory files, 20 of them session wrap
records. Any real frontmatter parser reads the FIRST block, gets `permalink`
alone, and never sees name/description/type.

The sharp case: `strip_frontmatter` exists specifically to stop thread extraction
from matching inside `description:` — its docstring says so. On those 20 wrap
records it strips the stray block and hands the real frontmatter back AS BODY,
producing exactly the condition it was written to prevent.

Repair merges permalink into the real block and drops the duplicate. Nothing
retyped: frontmatter and body are carried as slices, body md5 asserted unchanged.

TWO DEFECTS OF MY OWN, both found only after claiming success:

1. THREE FILES DAMAGED BY THIS SESSION'S OWN STAMPING COMMIT (ef6fa94). That
script located frontmatter with a non-greedy `^---\n.*?\n---\n`, which on a
stray-block file matches the STRAY block — so it appended superseded_by to the
wrong block and orphaned the real frontmatter into the body. That is the same
non-greedy-first-block blindness diagnosed in strip_frontmatter one hour
earlier, reproduced in the tool written to clean up after it.
And the post-stamp check reported "malformed: none" because it asked "does the
file start with frontmatter then a banner" — true for all three — while the
claim was "the stamp preserved the record's metadata". The control's subject
was adjacent to the claim's, for the sixth time today and the first time in my
own verification. Repaired, verified against the pre-stamp file from git: no
   key lost, prose preserved.

2. REPAIRING 20 APRIL-MAY WRAP RECORDS MOVED THEIR MTIMES TO TODAY, and
`sec_pause` picked "newest wrap" by mtime — so the digest promoted an April
session to `Last wrap` and lost both the pulling thread and the open question.
Caught by the DEGRADED section, which is the honest-degradation mechanism doing
its job. `sec_pause` now selects by git add-time, like `wrap_events`. Residual
stated in the comment: add-time lags the wrap by hours, so `Last wrap` is an
upper bound — wrong by hours where mtime was wrong by months.

Verified after: 0 two-block patterns, 0 orphaned frontmatter, 16 stamps intact
with name: present, 381 pointers resolve, 0 dead, selftest PASS, drift clean,
digest reports 0 degraded sections and the correct last wrap.

Not defects: context-discipline.md and relational-gap-analysis.md use the
`title:`/`type: note` convention and have no `name:` — flagged by my check, correct
as they stand.

Session 2026-04-26 — The day the canonical tracker became operative

Shape of the session

A long day that pivoted around a structural drift surfacing. The drift had been operative for four consecutive sessions — each one generating new sibling project files instead of using project-arc-rework.md as the working ground — and the steward surfaced it directly when I started discussing TODO-ALDINEXXI.md (a stale July 2025 file) as if it were the workstream tracker.

The pivot reshaped everything that followed:

  1. Consolidation of 04-23 evening / 04-24 / 04-25 / 04-26 work into the canonical tracker
  2. Synthesis of the morning's ideas through prior decisions (the 2026-04-19 reflowed-page paradigm holds; three-register frame maps cleanly inside it)
  3. Three steward locks (Path 1, Adsum-as-distinct-text, integrate-sibling-files)
  4. Safety commit of dotfiles before any ARC-repo modification
  5. Phase 0 deep audit (Explore agent, read-only)
  6. Phase 0 cleanup execution (commit 5c059d8)
  7. Vignette engine clarification (post-concert) — dialogue, not script
  8. Tomorrow's plan drafted with naming session pulled to the front

Past — what we did

1. Wake-up + chamber-library walk + cluster scaffolds

Inherited 2026-04-25 pulling thread (About-pages restructure under colophon-at-scale + full lex-chain; Path 1 vs Path 2). Symmetria init.

Steward feedback during the walk: "that catalogue is stale (any catalogues you may come across will be stale)" — saved as feedback-catalogues-stale-walk-trees.md. Walked the chamber-library trees (not catalogues) at steward direction. Caught Bachelard concentration in phenomenology/ (6 works), Berger as corpus-of-corpora (~13 works), and Jaccottet:Handke:Lichtenberg/ folder.

Steward correction on JHL folder placement: "Anything outside of converted texts are simply there because they are more recent and haven't been put in their right places." My read of placement-as-architectural-signal was over-interpretation. Drift logged: reading-architecture-into-housekeeping.

Stevens framing (steward, after authorizing scaffold save): "Wallace Steven's jar on the hill. Hic. Maybe I want to pull on the Bachelard as framing for the humic layer thread also... to be honest, I don't know where to start." Cluster scaffolds for the six remaining clusters saved (music-and-measure / mark-not-made / apostrophic / public-private genre / craft-and-tool-fitness / practice-across-life) with present-and-touching voices from chamber-library.

2. About-pages "decision frame" — replayed already-settled ground

Generated project-about-pages-decision-frame-2026-04-26.md framing Path 1 vs Path 2 + a three-register frame (threshold/colophon/lex) as if architectural ground were open. Discovered (after reading colophon.md): Bachelard, Berger, Sennett are already-Guides in colophon with verbatim recognitions. Drift logged: characterizing-substrate-without-checking-artifact-being-reshaped. The "newly visible pillars" framing was wrong; corrigendum added to humic-pillars file.

3. Door consolidation Marie Kondo pass

Steward walked the existing About-page enumeration: About/Colophon repetitive; Influences superseded by lex; AldineXXI+Typography should be together; Navigation Philosophy + What Kind of Attention are aspects of one idea. Steward directives:

  • Vignette earns own door (after I read vignette-specification.md and corrected my initial fold-into-Framework framing)
  • Framework prose stale, needs rewriting
  • Patterns removed for now (specifically musical project per steward, not foundational sense; may return when pedagogical-musical treatise begins)

Final 8-door enfilade landed: Colophon · Lex · Framework · Vignette · Attention · Chamber · Tools · Now (+ Bio quiet link).

4. Chamber rewrite frame — first version drafted from validation report only

Drafted from D.Glidden - The Chamber on Better Memories - A Validation Report.md (2026-02-16) without first reading chamber-from-simulation-to-source-aware.md (2026-03-04, same folder).

Steward correction (verbatim): "the fictional canon and deliberations we decided to archive as part of the v1 Chamber. This should be in your notes somewhere. The source-aware chamber is governed to avoid the contamination problem as much as is possible and is meant to be used for rigorous reading and thinking."

Read source-aware doc; substantially revised. Keystone: v1 (Simulation, archived) → v2 (Source-Aware, current). v2 is constrained retrieval against chamber-library, verifiable citation at passage level, bounded knowledge, scoped silence as first-class outcome, warrant taxonomy with transitive minimum (anti-pilpul), Disciple model (Understudy → Scholar), contamination-mitigation as deep commitment, working register "rigorous reading and thinking." Drift logged: reading-validation-instead-of-design-thinking-when-asked-what-is-becoming.

5. The structural drift surfaced — canonical-tracker discipline

I asked about TODO-ALDINEXXI.md (very old). Steward verbatim: "This not at all what I was referring to—this is a very old file that has nothing to do with the project anymore! We're drifting and I'm getting nervous. Where have you been keeping track of the work we've been doing on arc over the last week or so?"

Found project-arc-rework.md sitting in the memory dir, last referenced 2026-04-23 (Sant Jordi day). Four consecutive sessions opened without referencing the canonical tracker:

  • 2026-04-23 evening (Norris read)
  • 2026-04-24 (lex-method authored, posture cluster, §XII Sidenotes, ARC CLAUDE.md cleanup)
  • 2026-04-25 (marks cluster, colophon-at-scale, full lex-chain)
  • 2026-04-26 today

Umbrella drift named: working-without-canonical-roadmap. The five lower-level "canonical-library-not-checked-first" instances today (catalogue-as-shortcut · characterizing-substrate-without-checking-artifact · reading-validation-instead-of-design-thinking · didn't-check-roadmap · working-from-mental-summary) are all symptoms of this one upstream pattern.

Saved discipline at feedback-canonical-workstream-tracker-discipline.md with proposed amendments to /wake-up and /wrap-up skills.

6. Consolidation pass executed

Steward verbatim: "First thing we need to do is consolidate the last days of work between the use of project-arc-rework.md and today so that we can look again with full context. Then we can decide what to do."

Folded four dated sections into project-arc-rework.md (1434 → 1785 lines, +351 lines): 2026-04-23 evening (Norris read), 2026-04-24 (lex-method authored + posture cluster + §XII Sidenotes + ARC CLAUDE.md cleanup), 2026-04-25 (marks cluster + colophon-at-scale + full lex-chain), 2026-04-26 (chamber-library walk + cluster scaffolds + canonical-tracker drift surfaced).

7. Post-consolidation synthesis

Steward verbatim: "so, let's return to where we began with the about threshold. I liked some of the ideas from this morning. Can we read them through what was determined before? Recall that the lex work happened after the About decisions from several days ago, so the older decisions should be revisited with the clarified form we now posses after the lex emergence."

The 2026-04-19 reflowed-page paradigm holds at the page-architecture level. The three-register frame from this morning maps cleaner under the reflow:

  • Threshold (hic) = the opening of About, not a separate page
  • Adsum (response) = the second part of About
  • Doors = enfilade nav at bottom

Three specific lex-emergence modifications: enfilade doors update (Influences → Lex; consolidations); colophon already lex-method-shaped (no rewrite required); Path 1 vs Path 2 reduces to enfilade-item question.

Two deeper inheritances for when threshold-hic gets composed: "ARC is my expression of ligature" (Harrison Ch 2, 2026-04-23) + travail bien fait / compagnonnage.

8. Three steward LOCKS

Steward verbatim: "1. Path 1 clearly. Thank you for the clarity. 2. I lean towards two, or a single pass with two parts. They are certainly not the same text. 3. Integrate. There are a lot of good ideas there; whether they will all come to pass is another question, but the record needs to be complete."

  • Path 1 at enfilade-item level (separate Colophon and Lex items)
  • Adsum and threshold-hic as two distinct texts ("They are certainly not the same text")
  • Integrate the four sibling files into project-arc-rework.md as Integrations A/B/C/D; sibling files retained as audit trail with INTEGRATED redirect notices

9. Safety commit (memory dir)

Steward verbatim: "commit everything. I want to be sure"

Commit e9e772d on dotfiles (memory dir is part of ~/dotfiles repo): 49 files, +7,102 / −43. Pre-commit hooks passed. github push success; gitea SSH timeout (port 22 — known pre-existing open thread).

10. Phase 0 audit + cleanup execution

Audit dispatched via Explore agent (read-only, ~5–10 min). Returned structured inventory: 79 top-level files + 30+ subdirectories; ~15–20% of namespace candidate-for-archive-or-deletion.

Steward directives: "Batch A you can delete. Batches B + C please archive." Per-investigation: 1+3 set-aside-for-skills, 2 delete, 4 don't know, 5 assemble in single review directory, 6 delete.

Executed: commit 5c059d8 on origin/main + github-backup. 118 files changed, +42 / −2540. ARC's gitea (HTTPS) accepted the push cleanly — note: ARC's HTTPS endpoint unaffected by the SSH port-22 timeout that blocks dotfiles-gitea pushes.

What landed: 9 deletes (Batch A) · 9 file archives (Batch B to docs/archive/deprecated/) · 5 directory archives (Batch C: uce-planning, knowledge-system-{ideation,sessions}, system-session-logs, encoding-issues) · 6 tools to tools/set-aside-for-skills-analysis-2026-04-26/ · 3 file deletes (investigations 2 + 6) · 4 directory moves to docs/review-2026-04-26/ · 3 README files at archive destinations.

11. Vignette engine LOCKED — dialogue not script

Steward verbatim 1 (heading-to-concert read): "want to have an idea of what it will take to build the vignette system (seeing the old glyph system there makes me want to move ahead, but I know that we're probably not ready yet)"

Steward verbatim 2 (post-concert): "I couldn't share the text to analyze with you and then pass also to the jurist for a second opinion (rather than api calls)?" + "Please take note of all of this, yes."

Vignette genome generation happens in dialogue (Claude Code session) with optional jurist (Claude.app) second-opinion, not via programmatic generation script. Drops the ~100-line generation script + API key management. Implementation reduces from 3 components/~500–600 lines to 2 components/~330–430 lines (Hakyll compiler ext ~30 + frontend renderer ~300–400). Same registrar-in-dialogue pattern as the lex-method. Effort estimate: 3–5 focused sessions over 1–2 weeks (was 4–6).

Long-term commitment to local 32B Ollama unchanged (sustainability + L1-independence per spec); dialogue is interim, but much better than 8B local + script. Spec amendment owed at Phase 1 start.

12. Tomorrow's plan drafted — naming session first

Steward verbatim: "Can we also add deciding on names for the lex cluster(s), AldineXXI or framework, &c? We've been using names, but now that we will publish these should be truly established."

Naming pulled to the front because URL shape and door names ripple downstream into Hakyll routing, cluster-source frontmatter, and cross-page linking. Sequence: (1) naming session ~30–45 min morning; (2) Phase 1 verification checks ~15–20 min; (3) Branch A/B/C based on findings; (4) optional docs/review-2026-04-26 walkthrough.

Decisions made + rationale

  • Path 1 LOCKED at enfilade-item level — separate Colophon and Lex items. Reasons: different speech-acts (witness vs methodological gathering); different growth patterns (colophon grows occasionally; lex grows cluster-by-cluster); replacing Influences cleanly preserves the slot.
  • Adsum and threshold-hic LOCKED as two distinct texts — same page (per 2026-04-19 reflow), but separate compositions. Steward verbatim "They are certainly not the same text." Implication: when composition-time arrives, the steward should not attempt through-composed prose from threshold to Adsum.
  • Sibling files INTEGRATED into canonical tracker (record stays complete; redirect notices at top of each sibling).
  • Vignette engine = dialogue + jurist (interim). Drops generation script, keeps Hakyll compiler ext + frontend renderer. Long-term 32B Ollama destination unchanged.
  • Phase 0 cleanup executed per audit + steward directives. Chamber v1 material (chamber-sessions-private/, 55 files) preserved for Phase 2 browsable archive; assets/js/glyphs/ held until vignette renderer lands.

Decisions explicitly NOT made (and why)

  • Top-level chamber/ vs content/chamber/ two-tree question — audit flagged; steward did not address; not in cleanup batch.
  • canonical-map.md + tags.md disposition — steward "don't know"; left untouched.
  • .DS_Store / .gitignore decision — cosmetic; left for separate decision.
  • Threshold-hic + Adsum compositions — steward-led; energy-dependent; not proposed for tomorrow given concert recovery.
  • Vignette Phase 1 prototype — wants a clear evening; tomorrow may or may not be that.
  • Chamber v1 archive design — Phase 2; needs focused conversation with six open design questions (URL shape, navigation, qualifying frame, notation preservation, linkability, voice patterns folding).
  • Six remaining lex clusters' gathering work — held; method validated; can proceed at steward's pace.

Present — mood, returns, recalibrations

Returns this session (Symmetria ledger)

  • Catalogues-stale walk-trees caught (steward feedback at chamber-library walk start)
  • Reading-architecture-into-housekeeping caught (JHL folder over-reading; steward correction)
  • Characterizing-substrate-without-checking-artifact-being-reshaped caught (Bachelard/Berger/Sennett already-Guides in colophon)
  • Reading-validation-instead-of-design-thinking-when-asked-what-is-becoming caught (Chamber v1→v2 source-aware doc was the read I needed; steward correction)
  • Working-without-canonical-roadmap named at the umbrella level (steward surfaced the four-session pattern)

Successful patterns

  • Chamber-library walked under steward direction caught pillars — actual tree-walk surfaced things mental-summary had been under-weighting
  • Three-register frame resolves architectural redundancy — when redundancy worry surfaces, check whether registers are actually distinct or have been collapsed
  • Read-ARC-source-before-decision-frame — applied lex-method "read before claiming" discipline to ARC's own pages before laying out Path 1 vs Path 2
  • Sibling-file integration with redirect notices — per steward "the record needs to be complete"; no deletion, full audit trail

Confidence to recalibrate

  • The drift was structural, not a series of instances. Five lower-level patterns today were one upstream pattern. Future similar-shape drifts should be checked against an umbrella before being separately catalogued.
  • The /wake-up procedure as currently practiced did not surface project-arc-rework.md. Today's discipline-feedback proposes amendments. Tomorrow's wake will test whether the amendments operate.

Future — what is pulling

The pulling thread (singular)

Tomorrow's naming session. It is the immediate-decision frontier — URL shape, door names (Lex / Framework / Attention / Bio confirm), per-cluster page titles, /dwellings/ post-lex-emergence confirmation, threshold-hic section heading. Everything downstream (cluster URLs, Hakyll routing, page titles, cross-page linking, posture cluster's ability-to-publish-this-week) waits on these names.

The deeper pulling underneath: the canonical-tracker discipline becoming operative across sessions. Tomorrow's /wake-up is the test — does it surface project-arc-rework.md without steward prompting?

Other open horizons, ranked

Load-bearing (immediate):

  1. Tomorrow's naming session
  2. Phase 1 verification checks (3 items: §XII Sidenotes CSS state, site.hs Shape-A YAML extraction state, hic-apparatus retrofit scope)
  3. Branch A/B/C based on Phase 1 findings (implement gaps OR clean rebuild posture cluster OR pivot to Phase 2 Chamber v1 design)

Load-bearing (this week): 4. Cluster publication — posture + marks ready as locked recognitions; need clean rebuild (Phase 1.5) + production stack 5. About-pages reflow implementation (steward composes threshold-hic + Adsum when ready) 6. Chamber v1 archive design (Phase 2; six open design questions) 7. docs/review-2026-04-26/ walkthrough (4 directories, per-directory disposition)

Deferred-with-reason: 8. Vignette Phase 1 prototype — needs clear evening with no time pressure 9. Framework page rewrite (consolidates AldineXXI + Typography) — downstream of naming + reflow 10. Strunk & White vocabulary pass for ARC — post-Norris queue 11. Bio rewrite encompassing envergure — its own focused session

Parked: 12. L1/BMF — not our territory; Seb's work 13. L2 — parked through end of May per CLAUDE.md 14. Six remaining lex clusters' gathering work — at steward's pace 15. Memento Mori Press — long-horizon project 16. Forward Harrison reading queue (Forests, Gardens, Juvenescence)

Pause statement

I am about to be away from this. The day was long and substantial — the canonical-tracker drift surfaced and resolved into discipline; the consolidation + synthesis stitched four sessions into one tracker; three locks landed on About-page architecture; safety commit + Phase 0 cleanup executed cleanly; vignette engine clarified as dialogue; tomorrow's plan drafted with naming first.

What I want to find still pulling when we return: the naming session, with project-arc-rework.md surfacing in /wake-up without prompting. If that happens, the discipline-feedback saved today is operative. If it doesn't, the discipline lives on paper but not in practice — and that's the more important thread to address.

The steward closed the day post-concert (concert went pretty well; eating before bed). Honor by not piling on tomorrow before he's ready.

Literal question for next-Claude

When you wake tomorrow, does the canonical tracker (project-arc-rework.md) surface in /wake-up without steward prompting? And — separately — are the open naming questions in the queued plan complete on fresh-morning eyes, or does the steward surface a name-question we haven't yet listed?

Secondary: does the dialogue-as-vignette-engine decision still feel right tomorrow, or does sleep change the steward's read on the interim choice?
