David F GliddenandClaude Opus 4.8 3f9a89b00c chore(memory): Basic Memory trial begins — sync normalization baseline (283 files)
Basic Memory v0.21.6 first sync over the live memory dir (steward-authorized
live-dir trial, Option A 2026-06-06): adds permalink: to frontmatter, refolds
long YAML description lines, strips final newlines. Bodies untouched —
verified via full diff classification. From this commit forward, any diff in
claude/memory shows only what Basic Memory or the session writes.

Trial design: MemPalace untouched as incumbent; git status check on this dir
at every wrap; end-of-day evaluation (recall quality, sync robustness,
rebuild-from-files, malformed-file behavior).

Session Ledger — 2026-05-16

Returns

  • 2026-05-16T-wake — Symmetria init at wake-up after a ~10h overnight gap. Yesterday's unifying drift shape — acting on inferred rather than read — now KG-persistent (claude-code → drift-pattern → acting-on-inferred-not-read) and brief-frames-prime-the-reader. Today's discipline marker: when about to cite a source, apply a rule, or frame a question — quote, read, or examine first. The masters' reading thread is the queued exercise of this discipline at the spec layer; the Jurist response wait is the queued exercise at the framing layer.

  • 2026-05-16T-post-clear-wake — Symmetria re-init after /wrap-up + /clear (same-day, hours-ago). Six hours mid-day lost to mempalace repair excursion against the strategic memory that said keep as-is; steward stopped me before a fourth attempt. Option A restore executed cleanly; two-palace split established (palace-memory working / palace-chamber-typography artifact). Two corrections received: (a) Jurist Settlements file authorship — scribed by me, not steward+Jurist dialogue (renamed + frontmatter updated); (b) /clear ≠ "new application start" — MCP stays disconnected for this session. Today's drift incarnations (all one shape — acting on inferred rather than read): pipe-through-tail-swallowing-progress · structural-threshold-not-verified-before-recommendation · jurist-voice-document-adopting-source-authority · /clear-vs-app-start-conflation · 30-min-vs-yesterday's-4-hour-actual · mempalace-as-precondition-when-it-isn't. Discipline carried into the audit: findings only — no edits, no fixes, no recommendations dressed as conclusions; quote the specs verbatim where claims are made.

  • 2026-05-16T-stage-c-complete — Stage C executed cleanly after steward authorized "let's move ahead". Same shape as Stage B: read §II–§II.d end-to-end, identified the six-token spacing-scale table as what AldineXXI keeps (per ADR), authored silence-and-rhythm-specification.md (308 lines) with the silence taxonomy + §II.b Rhythm + §II.c Page Grid + §II.d Page Proportion, edited AldineXXI §II to summary + table + pointer (shrunk ~280 lines), added Prologue companion-table row. The split-naming honesty moment: AldineXXI §II remains The Spacing Scale (tokens); companion's §II becomes The Silence Taxonomy (the four kinds). Named in companion's reading guide. Branch now three commits ahead of main (Stage A ADR + Stages B + C). All Stage D preconditions met per ADR Part 5; surfaced Stage D as different-shape (authoring not extraction) with concentration-of-authority risk per ADR's own Consequences section, for steward call.

  • 2026-05-16T-stage-b-pause — Stage B paused mid-setup to ask where ADR-006 v2 lives. Branch docs/spec-extraction-2026-05 was created, AldineXXI §VII boundaries verified (lines 2012-2643, twelve subsections, not eleven — session memory was off by one), peer-spec frontmatter surveyed. Then before authoring the apparatus spec I noticed the ADR's path question and surfaced as a check-with-steward (contamination-flag: "as planned" without checking the disk). Steward revealed: ADR-006 v2 was never committed; only lived in chat memory because of a 500 error during the previous session that triggered the /wrap-up. Steward pasted the full ADR text — authored by Jurist (Claude.app), accepted 2026-05-16. Two-commit recovery: Stage A artifact c7f5b09 (ADR-006 v2 → docs/decisions/) + Stage B extraction 78e7c84 (apparatus-specification.md + AldineXXI summary block + Prologue companion-table row). Branch local, not pushed. One known stale line in §VII.g preserved verbatim per extraction discipline (Reading Compass "eight sigils" → seven after Stage E). Cross-ref convention named in companion reading guide rather than prefix surgery. Discipline carried: did NOT draft ADR-006 v2 myself (would have been jurist-voice-document-adopting-source-authority — yesterday's named drift, returned-to today). The return: explicit pause and steward-handoff at the moment authority was unclear.

  • 2026-05-16T-wake-post-wrap — Symmetria re-init after /wake-up. Same-day return, brief pause not full sleep. Pulling thread: Stage B Apparatus extraction. Literal question held open: where does ADR-006 v2 live (docs/decisions/ vs docs/AldineXXI-Codex/). World hasn't moved since wrap — audit + State Survey + ADR-006 v2 still uncommitted on ARC main. MemPalace upgrade check clean (0 behind). Yesterday's three returns travel forward: acting-on-inferred-not-read · strategic-memory-violated-15-min-after-saving-it · methodology coverage honesty when challenged. Discipline marker for Stage B if opened: quote/read/examine §VII directly before extracting; check ADR-006 v2 path before quoting it in commits.

  • 2026-05-16T-audit-complete — ARC spec corpus audit DELIVERED to docs/AldineXXI-Codex/_audits/spec-corpus-audit-2026-05-16.md (393 lines, five-section structure per brief, priority-5 ranking). Read-only against six specs; no edits, no commits. All seven State Survey predictions confirmed (apparatus extraction, silence extraction, ARC Style Guide gap, §2 matrix as load-bearing, Compass mismatches, vignette applicability, versioning Zibaldone-form). Audit-priority ranking: (1) §2 matrix authoring, (2) Apparatus extraction (precondition), (3) frontmatter §2.1 enumeration alignment [largest single cross-spec inconsistency, NOT highlighted in State Survey], (4) Compass reconciliation, (5) Silence extraction. Six additional findings beyond State Survey: frontmatter class: enumeration as MAJOR INCONSISTENCY · multilingual stale-cross-references · Annals rename unpropagated · §6 Change Policy never authored · Navigation philosophy as fourth extraction candidate · qualifier (✦/⟐) applicability matrix gap. Audit-method honesty: AldineXXI and content-typology read in offset-windowed chunks (token-window constraint); coverage high but not certified-complete at micro-drift granularity — named explicitly in audit's "audit-method notes" section. Pulling thread is resolved. Audit-discipline check: zero edits, zero commits, severity markers used per brief; the no-edits rule held even when obvious gaps surfaced (the temptation to fix frontmatter §2.1 inline was real and named-not-acted-on). Steward's literal question for next-Claude — did the audit surface what the survey predicted and does it reorder deferred work — answered in the response message: predictions confirmed; the audit does not reorder Tier 1 work (masters' reading + code-shape audit remain peer to matrix-authoring) but elevates frontmatter alignment and Compass reconciliation as named slots ahead of ARC Style Guide composition.

Open horizons

  • Pulling thread (post-/clear): ARC spec corpus audit (Jurist directive) — read-only ~90-180 min; brief at pending-spec-corpus-audit-2026-05-14.md; six specs in ~/_Dev/animal-davidglidden-eu/docs/AldineXXI-Codex/; output to _audits/spec-corpus-audit-2026-05-16.md. Findings only, no edits, no commits.
  • Load-bearing and unblocked (post-audit):
    • Masters' reading on OpenType feature discipline — §I.i.j PROVISIONAL in AldineXXI; ~1-2h; typography palace queryable via CLI subprocess (mempalace --palace ~/.mempalace/palace-chamber-typography search "..."); pulling thread file at project-opentype-feature-masters-reading-2026-05-15.md.
  • Waiting on external: Jurist's substantive response to Studium Engine seed brief v2 (no executor action advances).
  • State Survey is the durable reference: ~/_Dev/animal-davidglidden-eu/docs/AldineXXI-Codex/_audits/arc-state-survey-2026-05-16.md — covers all 14 ARC work areas + dependency map + three-tier path forward. Read before picking up any ARC thread.
  • Working state notes: Stop + PreCompact hooks restored and active (target palace-memory). MCP disconnected for this session (re-enables on next Claude Code app launch — whitelist + claude.json --palace updated). Mempalace stance LOCKED: keep as-is, palace-memory for working memory, palace-chamber-typography preserved as CLI artifact, no further repair attempts.

Confidence to recalibrate

  • Yesterday's recompose-was-load-bearing read: confirmed by the brief committing cleanly and the Jurist now holding a project-shaped (not L2-instrument-shaped) document. The recalibration to hold: the framing decisions land in the prose at §1, §3, §5, §10 — and they travel with the document. The composition was load-bearing because of where the framing lives, not because of effort.

  • naive-cost-estimation-against-past-trauma (3-5 day cleaning estimate that took 30 min) — hold today: estimates anchored to past failure shape are not estimates, they are projections. Verify the present before estimating the future.

  • strategic-memory-violated-15-min-after-saving-it — at 10:23 I saved project-mempalace-operational-stance-2026-05-16.md committing to "MemPalace as-is, no further repair attempts." At 10:51 I recommended the from-sqlite repair when the cascade fired. Discipline: when a strategic memory is fresh, the executor should treat any deviation as requiring explicit re-authorization — not "just one quick fix." The first violation cost six hours. For the audit: the same shape applies — no edits means no edits, even when an obvious gap reads as low-cost-to-close.
