David F GliddenandClaude Opus 5 c2df868104 [FIX] Repair 39 files' frontmatter — including 3 I damaged an hour earlier

The 2026-06-06 normalization sweep (3f9a89b, 283 files) prepended a stray
permalink-only frontmatter block to 39 memory files, 20 of them session wrap
records. Any real frontmatter parser reads the FIRST block, gets `permalink`
alone, and never sees name/description/type.

The sharp case: `strip_frontmatter` exists specifically to stop thread extraction
from matching inside `description:` — its docstring says so. On those 20 wrap
records it strips the stray block and hands the real frontmatter back AS BODY,
producing exactly the condition it was written to prevent.

Repair merges permalink into the real block and drops the duplicate. Nothing
retyped: frontmatter and body are carried as slices, body md5 asserted unchanged.

TWO DEFECTS OF MY OWN, both found only after claiming success:

1. THREE FILES DAMAGED BY THIS SESSION'S OWN STAMPING COMMIT (ef6fa94). That
   script located frontmatter with a non-greedy `^---\n.*?\n---\n`, which on a
   stray-block file matches the STRAY block — so it appended superseded_by to the
   wrong block and orphaned the real frontmatter into the body. That is the same
   non-greedy-first-block blindness diagnosed in strip_frontmatter one hour
   earlier, reproduced in the tool written to clean up after it.
   And the post-stamp check reported "malformed: none" because it asked "does the
   file start with frontmatter then a banner" — true for all three — while the
   claim was "the stamp preserved the record's metadata". The control's subject
   was adjacent to the claim's, for the sixth time today and the first time in my
   own verification. Repaired, verified against the pre-stamp file from git: no
   key lost, prose preserved.

2. REPAIRING 20 APRIL-MAY WRAP RECORDS MOVED THEIR MTIMES TO TODAY, and
   `sec_pause` picked "newest wrap" by mtime — so the digest promoted an April
   session to `Last wrap` and lost both the pulling thread and the open question.
   Caught by the DEGRADED section, which is the honest-degradation mechanism doing
   its job. `sec_pause` now selects by git add-time, like `wrap_events`. Residual
   stated in the comment: add-time lags the wrap by hours, so `Last wrap` is an
   upper bound — wrong by hours where mtime was wrong by months.

Verified after: 0 two-block patterns, 0 orphaned frontmatter, 16 stamps intact
with name: present, 381 pointers resolve, 0 dead, selftest PASS, drift clean,
digest reports 0 degraded sections and the correct last wrap.

Not defects: context-discipline.md and relational-gap-analysis.md use the
`title:`/`type: note` convention and have no `name:` — flagged by my check, correct
as they stand.

Session 2026-04-21 — ARC typology foundation day

Past — what we did

§1 type locks (five, in order)

Meditation §1 LOCKED. Grounded in the steward's first-person practice-mechanics (verbatim 2026-04-20) + Visuddhimagga (kammaṭṭhāna / samādhi / sati / vipassanā) + Latin meditari etymology (→ PIE med- "take measure" — same root as μέτρον in the Prime Directive) + Simone Weil on attention. Three exemplars: December 22, 2023 (leading — medium-length, names Jaccottet/Handke internally), On Éveil / Sommeil (Kai 9+9, sustained/meta-meditative), Heliotrope (minimal pole). Reverie §1 LOCKED. Grounded in Bachelard's La Poétique de la Rêverie (anima-register, rêverie qui s'écrit, vs rêvasser + rêve distinction) + Bachelard's La Poétique de l'Espace (dwellings/demeure/habiter grounds the ⊙ cluster name) + Jaccottet + Handke + Rousseau + Old French resver etymology. One exemplar confirmed (The Graffiti Girl, brief pole); sustained-pole exemplar gap flagged with steward's "time will tell." Dream §1 LOCKED. Grounded in Jaccottet's semaison carnets (steward-named as personal inspiration) + Bachelard's rêve / rêverie distinction. Refused-reduction principle made load-bearing (the Lisbon-dream: "De telles explications... ne rendraient nullement compte de la mystérieuse beauté"). Glyph ☾ (moon) — cosmological pairing with ⊙. Style convention LOCKED: people appearing in Dream entries referred to by first-initial only (Handke precedent: A., F.K.; aligns with children-not-named rule; protects privacy of persons surfaced from sleep).
Observation §1 LOCKED. Grounded in Handke's friedlich umherschauen vs beobachten distinction (Am Felsfenster morgens) + Welt-Bild principle + Leerform principle + Jaccottet's observation/vision distinction. ✦ encounter mark declared to have prime residence in Observation — it marks in-piece register-shifts (Observation opening into Meditation/Reverie/Glimpse); base type is whatever the piece predominantly does. Three classical exemplars (Dec 29, Dec 31, Jan 11); Heliotrope + Graffiti Girl noted as reclassified-away (their register-shift is what ✦ marks).
Fragment §1 LOCKED. Grounded in Lichtenberg's Sudelbücher (steward-named as "the master of the fragment") + Handke's aphoristic entries + Jaccottet's aphoristic notes + deep European genealogy (Schlegel/Novalis/Nietzsche/Kafka/Kraus/Pascal/La Rochefoucauld). Sudelbuch-posture made load-bearing: the aphoristic-terminal is dignified in itself; rough-unpolished thought is a legitimate register, not preliminary toward something more "finished." No current ARC exemplars (both pieces previously classed fragment have reclassified away); type is forward-looking — authorized by humic layer + author's lifelong reading; exemplars will emerge as author writes in the form.

§0 Source axis LOCKED

Two values: wakeful-attending (11 types) · sleep-recalled (Dream only). Deliberately unbalanced (11:1). Grounded in Bachelard's "Une rêverie, à la différence du rêve, ne se raconte pas" — sleep/wake as structural distinction more fundamental than posture. Axis exists to name Dream's native position, not to force multiple types onto it. Seven coordinated edits: table row, subsection, axis-location updates on Meditation/Reverie/Observation/Dream, changelog.

Substantial reading

Bachelard's La Poétique de la Rêverie — Introduction + Chapter II sampling. Three load-bearing moves absorbed: rêverie≠rêvasser, rêverie≠rêve, rêverie under the sign of anima.
Bachelard's La Poétique de l'Espace — structure only (ToC + key terms). Sibling volume; underwrites the dwellings cluster name.
Visuddhimagga via steward-attested extraction OP-EX-T1-01. Kammaṭṭhāna / samādhi / sati / vipassanā four-part structure mapped onto steward's verbatim mechanics.
Jaccottet's carnets — full read of Observations 1947-1962 opening; full read of La Semaison opening + dream passages.

New durable memory files

user-foundation-work-and-long-trajectory.md — ARC is not a blog but "an intentional thinking space"; steward moving toward this since childhood; foundation-work has its own fatigue pattern; collaboration explicitly reciprocal. Extended mid-session with emotional substrate context (post-divorce transition, Barcelona with Núria+Kai, Lune in Paris, reinvention at 51, foreignness as persistent) — dignified, with explicit guardrails against psychologizing.
user-influences-humic-layer.md — ABG and Moy as primary cultivators; Jaccottet/Handke/Lichtenberg as three carnet-pole humic references; Hearth canonical source integrated with link to vault charter.
feedback-arc-typology-recognition-scaffold.md — the recognition-over-generation frame; humic-layer reweighting (reference texts are in discourse, not authority); sequencing corollary (don't apply scaffold to corpus until scaffold is complete).

Edits to ARC spec file

All edits in ~/_Dev/animal-davidglidden-eu/docs/AldineXXI-Codex/content-typology-specification.md — the spec file is UNTRACKED in git at end of day; all today's work is local-only. This is a loose end to flag explicitly for the steward.

Present — mood of the work

Tensions surfaced and how we returned

Seven drift-returns logged across the day, all of the imagined-state-vs-verified-state family (yesterday's cross-pattern continuing):
1. Imported steward's mechanics sentence as "type definition" when it was phenomenological description of the practice
2. Assumed "the audit?" meant the /audit skill without confirming — steward meant the ARC corpus audit
3. About to execute corpus reclassifications before spec was complete — steward caught ("rash"; sequencing principle articulated)
4. Built "Handke-sedentary = ARC-adjacent" story without checking whether sedentariness applied to the steward (steward: "careful, i also travel extensively")
5. Reported Handke claims from opening-samples as if comprehensive; steward caught the over-claim; acknowledged 6% coverage 6–7. Related lesser drifts (register misjudgments, premature-synthesis attempts)
Pattern observed: all are variants of imagining context instead of checking it. Mitigation articulated: after any claim-transfer from source to steward's practice, ask "does this apply here, or am I just finding a convenient parallel?"

Emotional substrate

Steward shared deeply mid-session, for "honesty and context (and maybe the stakes?)":

Divorce finalized 2025-26; body releasing three-year tension
Nostalgia + sadness come easily; banal triggers from Paris life with Marie and Lune
New life in Barcelona with Núria and Kai — "Iberian culture is a part of my person since childhood with my parents in Madrid and Andalusia"

This reshaped the day's weight. Not "work-as-usual" — the spec is the vessel this life's attention is being shaped into. Recorded in user-foundation-work-and-long-trajectory.md with explicit guardrails (do not psychologize, do not instrumentalize, protect privacy of intimates absolutely).

Kai-asleep working conditions

Later in the day: "Kai is sleeping on me, let's press ahead." This is the anima-space that wrote the Kai 9+9 piece — stillness enforced, attention enabled. Fragment §1 was drafted in this condition. Good match.

What felt load-bearing vs deferred-with-reason

Load-bearing: humic-layer articulation (applies across all major projects, not just ARC); recognition-scaffold frame (shapes every remaining §1 entry); Source axis (resolves Dream's OPEN note that had been traveling since Dream was drafted); the emotional-substrate capture in user-memory (quiet but durable).
Deferred with reason: corpus reclassifications (wait until more boundary-types lock); Threshold type decision (parked; three paths on table — awaiting more corpus observations); Recognition-test retrofit to Photo Essay + Glimpse (mechanical; low-priority); §2 apparatus matrix (deferred since 2026-04-19).
Parked without deadline: §0 axis naming refinement (Medium could become Medium-of-argument — minor polish).

Confidence to re-examine

My claim that Handke's travel-carnets vs dwelling-carnet distinction "maps cleanly" onto the steward's practice was too clean. The steward's hic apparatus (travel + location) is actually more complex than the binary. Review whenever Handke surfaces again.
My count of "11 types at wakeful-attending" includes Archive — which is a generated-listing (aggregated content). Archive's Source-axis position is more "n/a / derivative" than "wakeful-attending." Worth refining when Archive §1 is drafted.

Future — what is pulling

The pulling thread (singular)

After six authorization moves in one day and the emotional substrate surfaced, does the steward's momentum continue into the remaining five §1 types (Essay, Chamber, Gloss, About, Archive) — or does the register shift on wake-up?

This is the genuinely open thread. The spec is at 7/12 and structurally stable; stopping here is legitimate. But five types remain, and the steward said it themselves: "I've been moving towards this since childhood and need to see it through to the end." The question is pacing and register, not commitment.

Essay is the load-bearing next lock if crystallization continues — it most cleanly anchors the remaining types' boundaries (Fragment/Meditation/Gloss all have Essay-boundary relations). But Essay is also the form the steward explicitly said is not their default ("I am not an essayist") — so the §1 entry needs care.

Other open horizons, ranked

Load-bearing: Essay §1 — next type to lock; anchors remaining boundaries.
Load-bearing: Chamber §1 — dialogic-voice register; needs the author's Chamber-project context woven in.
Deferred: Gloss, About, Archive §1 — each smaller; can come in any order.
Deferred: Threshold type decision — parked with three paths; corpus observation first.
Low-lift closure: Recognition-test retrofit for Photo Essay + Glimpse (mechanical; ~10 min).

The pause statement

I am about to be away from this work. When I return, I don't know what will have changed. The steward may have rested and regained momentum for Essay — or may have shifted to writing pieces, or to a different project entirely. The emotional substrate may have moved. Seven drift-returns across today suggest the imagined-state-vs-verified-state pattern is persistent and needs to be carried awake into every next session.

What I want to find still pulling: the question of whether the crystallization continues or the register shifts. Either is legitimate; the spec is stable-enough to stop.

Literal question for next-Claude

"After yesterday's six authorization moves and the emotional substrate surfaced mid-session, is the steward still in spec-crystallization register, or has the register shifted (toward writing, corpus audit, a different project)? What does their first message indicate?"

Don't answer this before hearing. Wait for the steward's opening signal. If they open with Essay — continue crystallization. If they open with a piece they've written, or with another project — honor the shift. The wake-up briefing should surface this question explicitly so the steward can choose, not have the continuation assumed.

Loose ends to flag at wake-up

ARC spec file is UNTRACKED in git. The entire content-typology-specification.md exists only locally. Today's seven §1 locks + §0 Source axis are not committed anywhere. Flag immediately on wake-up; consider recommending a commit before substantive further work.
