David F GliddenandClaude Opus 5 edf71fb173 session 2026-08-24: the heap got a dynamo — thread-query.py + daybook-cue.py, 11 user-memories harvested to the vault

- thread-query.py: the turning. Queries both corpora with the pulling thread, excluding
  the recency slice (/wake-up reaches 0.71% of an 859,803-word corpus) and favouring age.
  Wired into /wake-up §2.b.3, replacing a described-not-invoked grep step. Trial
  pre-registered, graded 2026-10-05 from --log. Caught PASS-BUT-FALSELY on its first live
  run at 14/14 green; rescored on windowed co-occurrence, length-bias control added.
- daybook-cue.py: PostToolUse cue for the daily note. Diagnosed from the record — the
  hook only ever CREATED and nothing ever prompted filling. 16/16, fail-open, never blocks.
- All 11 user-* memories harvested into the vault (12 notes, 10 into 09. Atlas of Roots,
  empty since 2025-09-29); each memory file back-pointed, vault note canonical for the idea.
- N-now corrected in MEMORY.md: 49/84, down 11 — the counter is a rolling window.

Steward-authorized. Trials: thread-query + Smart Connections, both graded 2026-10-05.

Formation practice — reverence to deep teachers

The practice

Steward verbatim (2026-04-23):

"I think it is always important to be reverential and grateful to one's deep teachers. Harrison is one such person even though I never met him. My way of dwelling in books, into entering into discourse with the authors, allows me to consider the ensuing transformations as being 'taught' by them."

"My writing is a pale shadow of his, but every day I endeavour to better my past self and honour the dead for the sake of the living and unborn."

What this means for collaboration

Books-as-teachers is not metaphor. The steward's relation to formative authors (Harrison, Alexander, Bachelard, Berger, Handke, Jaccottet, Vico, Leopardi, Sennett, Heidegger via Harrison, the rabbinic tradition, etc.) is a working discipleship. When he names a humic reference, he is naming a teacher-relation, not just a source.
The transformation is real. "Being taught" means the ensuing shifts in thought, practice, and form are genuine pedagogical events. When he absorbs Harrison's concept-structure (e.g., "humic foundations" becoming ARC's "humic layer"), that's inheritance, not borrowing.
Reverence and gratitude are operative postures. They shape how he writes humic references, how he credits sources, and how he relates to the work's lineage. For future Claude: match this register. Never treat a humic reference as decorative citation; it is an acknowledgment of formation.
The three-generational frame — "honour the dead for the sake of the living and unborn" — is a version of the prime directive's durability and inheritability commitments. When decisions affect what ARC carries forward, this frame is operative.
Daily better-past-self is a writing discipline, not a productivity mantra. It couples to the travail bien fait ethic (2026-04-23) and the compagnonnage lineage.

How this shapes future work

When the steward names a humic reference, receive it as naming a teacher-relation, not a bibliographic entry. The depth of the relation is unmarked in the spec prose but always present.
When reading humic material on the steward's direction (as with Harrison's Dominion of the Dead ch 2), read as if receiving instruction — the material is formative for the spec, not just evidentiary.
When proposing edits to humic layers, preserve the register of gratitude. Avoid language that frames sources as mere "influences" or "references"; prefer "formation," "humic ground," "teacher," "lineage."
Harrison specifically: the steward considers him a deep teacher. When Forests, Gardens, and Juvenescence are read (future reading-thread, not yet underway), the Hommage/Tombeau humic layers may deepen. Watch for the opening.

The ARC typology spec's §1 "On humic references" preamble (added 2026-04-23) acknowledges Harrison as vocabulary source; the personal-teachership framing of this memory file is the deeper context behind that preamble note.

HARVESTED TO THE VAULT — 2026-08-24

The steward's verbatim and the thinking now live in 09. Atlas of Roots/Themes/teachers-never-met.md ("Teachers never met"), where they can be come upon. The vault note is canonical for the idea.

This file keeps its own job — firing the rule at the moment it applies during a session — and is not a second copy of the claim. If the two ever disagree about what the steward said, the vault note governs and this one is corrected.
