David F GliddenandClaude Opus 5 c2df868104 [FIX] Repair 39 files' frontmatter — including 3 I damaged an hour earlier

The 2026-06-06 normalization sweep (3f9a89b, 283 files) prepended a stray
permalink-only frontmatter block to 39 memory files, 20 of them session wrap
records. Any real frontmatter parser reads the FIRST block, gets `permalink`
alone, and never sees name/description/type.

The sharp case: `strip_frontmatter` exists specifically to stop thread extraction
from matching inside `description:` — its docstring says so. On those 20 wrap
records it strips the stray block and hands the real frontmatter back AS BODY,
producing exactly the condition it was written to prevent.

Repair merges permalink into the real block and drops the duplicate. Nothing
retyped: frontmatter and body are carried as slices, body md5 asserted unchanged.

TWO DEFECTS OF MY OWN, both found only after claiming success:

1. THREE FILES DAMAGED BY THIS SESSION'S OWN STAMPING COMMIT (ef6fa94). That
   script located frontmatter with a non-greedy `^---\n.*?\n---\n`, which on a
   stray-block file matches the STRAY block — so it appended superseded_by to the
   wrong block and orphaned the real frontmatter into the body. That is the same
   non-greedy-first-block blindness diagnosed in strip_frontmatter one hour
   earlier, reproduced in the tool written to clean up after it.
   And the post-stamp check reported "malformed: none" because it asked "does the
   file start with frontmatter then a banner" — true for all three — while the
   claim was "the stamp preserved the record's metadata". The control's subject
   was adjacent to the claim's, for the sixth time today and the first time in my
   own verification. Repaired, verified against the pre-stamp file from git: no
   key lost, prose preserved.

2. REPAIRING 20 APRIL-MAY WRAP RECORDS MOVED THEIR MTIMES TO TODAY, and
   `sec_pause` picked "newest wrap" by mtime — so the digest promoted an April
   session to `Last wrap` and lost both the pulling thread and the open question.
   Caught by the DEGRADED section, which is the honest-degradation mechanism doing
   its job. `sec_pause` now selects by git add-time, like `wrap_events`. Residual
   stated in the comment: add-time lags the wrap by hours, so `Last wrap` is an
   upper bound — wrong by hours where mtime was wrong by months.

Verified after: 0 two-block patterns, 0 orphaned frontmatter, 16 stamps intact
with name: present, 381 pointers resolve, 0 dead, selftest PASS, drift clean,
digest reports 0 degraded sections and the correct last wrap.

Not defects: context-discipline.md and relational-gap-analysis.md use the
`title:`/`type: note` convention and have no `name:` — flagged by my check, correct
as they stand.

Session 2026-04-27 — The day the enfilade went emergent

Shape of the session

The day opened on the canonical-tracker discipline test from 2026-04-26 — does project-arc-rework.md surface in /wake-up without prompting? It did. The discipline saved as feedback yesterday operated. From there the day unfolded as one long arc: morning naming session, midday architectural review through Alexander, afternoon Branch A execution, late-afternoon Branch B sweep with emergent pivot, evening refinement cycles. By session end the about-enfilade was live in its emergent form — all 8 doors functional, breadcrumbs consistent, stubs holding the steward-composition pieces.

Five Symmetria returns this session, all named at the moment of catching: bulk-scaffold instinct (steward's "would Alexander do it?"), engineering-leave-gaps numbering (steward's "wouldn't it be 1 or 2?"), pulling Seb into ARC (territory error), rm of dormant marginalia (preserve-don't-delete), over-decorating-as-proving (steward self-named on the Liber Larium path).

Past — what we did

1. Wake into yesterday's pulling thread

/wake-up surfaced project-arc-rework.md at session-open without steward prompting. Discipline operative on first morning. Saved KG fact for the durable signal — the canonical-tracker discipline isn't just on paper, it's in the practice now.

2. Naming session — the 8-door slate filled

Morning steward verbatim: "On the posture of the editor; On the marks—very good. Agreed for the URLs." and (after Harrison Ch 3 surfaced laral frame): "It is the record of those influences–not all dead mind you (fortunately, the world will be a lonely place when they are gone)–maybe Liber lares?"

Door names + URLs LOCKED through the day:

Colophon — /colophon/ (held; lex-method-shaped already)
Hearth — /lares/ (lex cluster door; from Harrison Ch 3 What Is a House? laral frame; Lares = formative voices, living and dead; URL keeps Latin, door keeps Saxon-near). Path: Lex → Liber Lares → The Hearth—Liber Larium → The Hearth. Steward caught the over-decorating-as-proving pattern: "Maybe that's too much and the Hearth suffices. My deep fear of foolishness always wants to try too hard and prove too much."
AldineXXI — /aldine-xxi/ (kept name; later shortened from "AldineXXI Framework" to just "AldineXXI"). Steward: "that is what I call the framework, maybe that is what I should leave it as in the about pages."

Per-cluster page titles LOCKED: On the Posture of the Editor (/lares/posture/) + On the Marks (/lares/marks/). Form pattern set: On the [X] / On the [X] of [Y] — essayistic, registrar-humility.

About-page composition LOCKED: body-prose + small-caps marginalia at register turns. Steward verbatim: "I like your read, prose and margin whispers in small caps." No headings (Tex Avery joke caught the "THRESHOLD" anti-pattern). Form follows medieval rubric tradition into Aldine italic register-set into AldineXXI small-caps marginalia — source-verified from Bringhurst + Lupton.

§XII.b Register Markers spec section drafted and inserted into AldineXXI specification as separate apparatus from §XII Sidenotes (Path C: distinct speech-act, left margin, small caps).

3. Alexander/Timeless Way architectural review

Steward provided source PDF (/Users/davidglidden/Downloads/The_Timeless_Way_of_Building.pdf); review run against actual headnotes + Ch 1 opening + Ch 8 haunting-sadness close + Ch 9 The Flower and the Seed in full. The form-content unity steward named was source-verified at the deepest level: Alexander explicitly tells the reader to read italic headnotes first; ARC's About-page composition decision (body-prose + marginalia) independently arrived at the same form.

All morning's structural decisions tested against the four loads (life as criterion, generation not making, autonomy + code, the haunting sadness) — all passed structurally.

Steward closing formulation, saved as durable testing-frame: "the structure encourages the visitor to explore, to dwell. That the visitor is not overly guided, but sufficiently oriented." This phrase becomes the test for any future ARC architectural decision.

Kernel temper: Alexander's Ch 27 makes clear the language is scaffolding; the quality is what survives the gate. The architectural review confirms the morning's decisions are necessary but not sufficient; the work breathes only when the writing breathes. Five typography reads added to ARC open tasks (Tschichold Form of the Book, Ruder Structure, Fleishman Six Centuries, Manutius the Younger — alternate ABBYY found and converted today, Gill Essay on Typography — added to chamber-library by steward 10:52). Timeless Way MD conversion flagged as soon-task (530-page scanned PDF needs OCR).

4. Branch A — production stack implementation

Phase 1 verification confirmed gaps: §XII Sidenotes CSS not built, site.hs Shape-A YAML extraction not built, 14/69 posts missing location: field. Steward chose Branch A (gaps in production stack); declared complete-pending-content per Option C (extraction step queued for Branch B against actual content).

Deliverables:

Manutius the Younger ABBYY-converted (104K, 126 pages of readable Renaissance Latin); chamber-library file replaced; conversion script preserved at /tmp/abbyy_to_md.py.

5. Branch B Step 1 — Hearth namespace mechanical wiring

content/lares/ directory created; content/lares/posture.md + content/lares/marks.md stubs with class: lex frontmatter; templates/lex.html minimal wrapper; site.hs match rule for content/lares/<slug>.md → /lares/<slug>/.

6. Branch B Step 1.5 — about-enfilade emergent (the big architectural pivot)

Initially proposed the about-enfilade as declared (data-driven via navigation.yaml), parallel to Reading Compass. Started executing with bulk YAML rewrite — steward denied: "Would Alexander do it like this?"

The denial caught two errors at once: (a) bulk-scaffold action was the cramped will of the maker (Ch 9, The Flower and the Seed) — Alexander's diagnostic for not-the-Way; (b) my recommendation rested on a category error — about-enfilade entries are pages-in-themselves (one-to-one mapping), so the underlying nature wants emergent (option 3), not declared (option 2). Saved as durable feedback feedback-would-alexander-do-it-test.md (with count-from-one extension after second catch).

Pivoted to emergent: each about-page declares enfilade: about + enfilade-order: N in frontmatter. Hakyll gathers via getMatches + getMetadata (no compile cycle — the cycle was the first build error, caught and fixed). Saved as KG architectural pattern: navigation surfaces don't need compiled bodies, only metadata + routes.

Per-page sweep deliverables:

6 about-pages flagged: Colophon (1), AldineXXI (3), Vignette (4), Attention (5; with enfilade-name: "Attention" override preserving long question-form title as page H1), Tools (7), Now (8); orders 2 (Hearth) + 6 (Chamber) reserved.
Hardcoded <nav class="about-enfilade"> blocks removed from colophon, attention-page, tools, now-page (aldine-xxi + vignette didn't have them).
Body-text /typography/ → /aldine-xxi/ updates in colophon, about, tools, docs/tools-process-guide.
typography.md folded into aldine-xxi.md as new "The Experience" section (lossless merge; transitional note marks pending unified rewrite); typography.md archived to docs/archive/merged/.
patterns-page.md + influences-page.md + navigation-philosophy.md archived to docs/archive/merged/ (per morning's locks).
council-page-public.md (steward identified as v1 chamber landing) + content/chamber/index.md (v1 content) → docs/archive/chamber-v1/ with provenance README.

7. Late-session template architecture

Three template additions consolidate the about-enfilade into a coherent pattern:

templates/about-page.html created — minimal: breadcrumb (About → [Page]) + <h1 class="about-title"> + body. Routes pages with enfilade: about flag away from post.html (which had inappropriate /essays.html breadcrumb on Colophon and Vignette).
Breadcrumb in lex.html with conditional: Hearth shows About → Hearth; lex clusters show About → Hearth → [Page]. Uses enfilade-name override.
Chamber routes through about-page.html for index — site.hs chamber match rule's else-branch checks hasAboutEnfilade.

Body H1 duplications removed from Hearth, AldineXXI, Chamber stubs (templates provide H1).

Steward composition territory clarified: "Hearth and the about hic and adsum I will want to compose in dialogue as ever." — three pieces explicitly steward-led, in dialogue with executor as registrar.

Three-tier navigation spectrum named (imposed / declared / emergent); each surface lives at the tier its nature demands. Alexander posture honored.
Form-content unity verified at deepest level through the Timeless Way review — ARC's About-page composition decision independently arrived at Alexander's own form.
Section-uniform breadcrumb as the right tier for about-pages (not per-page emergent because section parent is uniform).

Confidence to recalibrate

The day's architectural rigor needs to land in the writing. Tomorrow's composition dialogues are where the form-content unity tested today gets applied to actual prose. The risk: the architectural rigor doesn't carry through if writing-attention diffuses.
Steward composition territory is real and held for dialogue. I should not draft Hearth/Hic/Adsum unilaterally; surfacing material and registrar-shaped support is the posture.

Future — what is pulling

The pulling thread (singular)

The composition-in-dialogue trio: Hearth landing prose + About Hic prose + About Adsum prose.

These three pieces are the keystones that today's architectural work has been preparing the conditions for. Forms locked. Templates built. Doors wired. Stubs hold space. What remains is the writing itself — and the writing is steward-led, in dialogue with executor as registrar.

This is the next intensification: rigor of architecture → rigor of prose. The Alexander framework that validated the structure today is the same framework against which the prose will be tested tomorrow ("does it pass form-content unity in the actual writing?").

Pause statement

I am about to be away from this. The day was long and substantive — the canonical-tracker discipline tested operative on its first morning; the 8-door slate filled and tested against Alexander; the production stack built; the about-enfilade pivoted from declared to emergent and went live; many small refinements consolidated into a coherent template architecture by session end.

The thread I want to find still pulling: the composition dialogues — Hearth landing prose, About Hic, About Adsum. The architectural conditions are set; the writing is what completes the work. Steward composes; I gather and surface in registrar mode.

Steward closed warmly: "Let's wrap-up it's been an excellent day". The fatigue is real after this much architectural work. Tomorrow may or may not be a composition day — that is steward's pacing.

Literal question for next-Claude

When the dialogue opens, does the steward want to begin with the threshold (the About-page Hic — the door of the whole work), the room (the Hearth landing — what greets the reader who enters the lex apparatus), or an opening that names itself? And — separately — has the architectural rigor of today carried into the steward's energy for the writing, or does today's intensity want a quieter day before the compositions begin?

Secondary question: does the cul-de-bouteille design surface earlier than expected (because the hr-to-footer transition is now visually visible), or does it wait for its own focused session?
