Basic Memory v0.21.6 first sync over the live memory dir (steward-authorized
live-dir trial, Option A 2026-06-06): adds permalink: to frontmatter, refolds
long YAML description lines, strips final newlines. Bodies untouched —
verified via full diff classification. From this commit forward, any diff in
claude/memory shows only what Basic Memory or the session writes.

Trial design: MemPalace untouched as incumbent; git status check on this dir
at every wrap; end-of-day evaluation (recall quality, sync robustness,
rebuild-from-files, malformed-file behavior).

Session Ledger — 2026-05-14

Returns

  • ~09:50 — Caught the framing shift before acting on the L1 plan. Recall baseline doc explicitly redirects to addendum ("supersedes §3 and §4"). Original H1/H2 mischaracterized: H1 was downstream normalization (already shipped as PR #163/#164), H2 was reshaped to battery-suppression (architectural design call, not mechanical). Verified addendum's file:line citations against current main f0be2d8 — H2 + H3 unchanged, H1 shipped. Plan's "H2 first as most empirically diagnosable" no longer holds. Surfaced three honest options to steward (H3 fix / H2 PENDING-design-call / cross-cutting PROPOSAL) before continuing. Pattern guarded against: forcing-the-plan-onto-changed-evidence.

Open horizons

  • Pulling thread (inherited from morning's wrap): L1 recall-fix focused session per project-L1-recall-fix-session-plan.md. H2 (vector returns 0 on known content) is the entry H-issue. Plan is self-contained: pre-session reading → reproduce H2 in current main → PENDING-N proposal → on AUTHORIZED, branch + spec amendment + failing test + minimal fix + PR.
  • Inherited literal question: Did H2 (vector returns 0) still reproduce in current main, or has it been silently fixed/changed since April 19?
  • Mood signal carried forward: recurring drift is warnings-and-criteria-in-context-but-not-applied-at-moment-of-action (yesterday's MCP probe; Sunday's register-without-spec-criterion). Hold this as the L1 work calls for governance discipline at every boundary.
  • Mempalace mine still running (PID 24651, ~21h in). No mempalace MCP calls; Stop + PreCompact hooks remain disabled; backup at ~/.claude/settings.json.backup-2026-05-14-pre-mine-completion.

Confidence to recalibrate

Authorization moves

  • ~10:15 — PENDING-18 filed: H3 temporal fallthrough fix, [HARDENING], Option 1 (module-level guard at parseTemporalQueryParams) recommended. Awaiting steward+jurist authorization. No code touched. Spec amendment held until AUTHORIZED.
  • ~10:35 — Jurist reviewed; AUTHORIZED with one modification (version-bump to v1.8 as gap-fill, not clarification). Steward authorized. REVIEWED-20 recorded.
  • ~10:50 — Amendment doc written; branch fix/h3-temporal-text-query-fallthrough cut from main (fast-forwarded local main from 8f26642 to cdc2f0e first); 4 new failing tests staged.
  • ~11:00 — TDD cycle complete: red tests confirmed → fix applied → 6/6 green → full suite 3720/3720 → check + lint clean.
  • ~11:10 — Caught remote-name discrepancy (BMF CLAUDE.md says skemantix/BetterMemories.io; actual is CapableMind-ai/betterMemories_app). Corrected references in PENDING-18 + amendment before CapableMind-AI commit. Worth noting in next BMF session that BMF CLAUDE.md remotes table is stale.
  • ~11:15 — Both commits + pushes landed. PR #172 opened: https://github.com/CapableMind-ai/betterMemories_app/pull/172 — closes #166.
  • ~11:25 — PENDING-19 filed: H2 (battery silent-fail) as [PROPOSAL] for design-call surfacing-to-Seb. Resisted contamination temptation to draft it as a fix. Four design questions surfaced verbatim from addendum §2; recommended Option B (GH comment on #165 referencing PR #172, ask Seb to address all four). Steward authorization needed to execute the surfacing action.
  • ~11:35 — Steward authorized PENDING-19 (REVIEWED-21) and PENDING-20 drafting in same turn. PENDING-20 (cross-cutting read-path-honest-degradation [PROPOSAL]) filed per jurist's specification — naming event, not remediation; four H-confirmations table; design principle proposed; explicit non-assignment of mechanism; three options on filing shape with executor recommending (c) both.
  • ~11:40 — Comment posted on #165: https://github.com/CapableMind-ai/betterMemories_app/issues/165#issuecomment-4449072673 (verbatim text from PENDING-19 Option B; all four questions surfaced; Seb asked to address all four or explicitly defer).
  • ~11:45 — Jurist message drafted for steward to forward (three questions: cluster placement, DN-GOV-08 evaluation, filing shape). Required attachments: PENDING.md, REVIEWED.md, addendum cross-cutting callout. Steward holds the message until they're ready to forward to Claude.app.
  • ~12:00 — Jurist returned three governance calls; steward authorized: (1) Cluster B is correct (NOT Cluster A — read-path observability is epistemically downstream); REVIEWED-18 + REVIEWED-19 share the same cluster (verifiable epistemic integrity). (2) DN-GOV-08 fit confirmed as invariant-shaped (stabilizes conditions, does not automate recognition); evaluation language to follow I15-I17 pattern. (3) Option (c) initially recorded as authorized (file PENDING + L2 elevation). L1_contamination_profile insight: distinct from Cluster A's monotonic shape — it is the competence-vulnerability paradox: increasing capability masks decreasing observability of degraded paths. Recorded as REVIEWED-22; project memory saved.

Returns

  • ~12:10 — Caught: REVIEWED-22's Option (c) authorization conflicts with global CLAUDE.md L2-PARKED status ("L2 PARKED through end of May 2026. No L2 governance advancement, no new invariant work, no constitutional proposals. L2-adjacent questions arising from L1 work: note, don't pursue."). Surfaced honestly to steward at session end. Steward confirmed: "I won't be working on L2 until the end of May — that something was surfaced because of L1 work is both fantastic and coincidental." — meaning: surfacing is welcome, L2 elevation is held. Corrected REVIEWED-22 to Option (a) only (PENDING-20 stays as L1 entry; jurist framings recorded for post-May pickup; L2 elevation work deferred). Drift pattern named: taking-jurist-authorization-at-face-value-without-checking-constitutional-constraint. Lesson: Symmetria check should fire on EVERY [PROPOSAL] elevation, not just on substantive technical decisions. Catch was late (after REVIEWED-22 recorded) but before propagation; corrective applied same-session.
  • ~12:30 — PENDING-21 filed: H4 (#167) hook recall pollution + logchain accumulation as [PROPOSAL] design-call. Same shape as PENDING-19. Three design questions surfaced verbatim from addendum §4; recommended Option B with H2-coupling note (H4's ambient cost is "pure loss on battery" per §6, so Seb should see the H2/H4 coupling rather than treating them as independent).
  • ~12:45 — Steward authorized PENDING-21 surfacing during the wrap-up flow (REVIEWED-23). Drafted literal comment text + reviewed by steward → posted on #167: https://github.com/CapableMind-ai/betterMemories_app/issues/167#issuecomment-4449244331. All three audit findings now in Seb's queue: PR #172 (H3 mechanical, MERGEABLE), comment on #165 (H2 design call), comment on #167 (H4 design call). Coherent single-window batch surfacing of three findings in one session.

Confidence to recalibrate

  • High — three deliverables shipped in one session (PR #172 + #165 comment + PENDING-19 + PENDING-20 + PENDING-21 + competence-vulnerability paradox memory) without compromising the discipline at any of them. Amendment-first + TDD + three-party-model + Symmetria all functioned cleanly. The L2-PARKED catch was late but was caught before propagation.
  • Worth holding for next session: the working pattern of executor surfaces with all questions verbatim → steward+jurist refine → executor implements only when authorized scales across multiple findings batched in a single window. Today's three-PENDING-in-one-session was inside that envelope. Worth measuring against future sessions.

Sub-agent dialogues

Bypasses

Evening wake (post-context-clear)

Returns

  • Wake-up ~now — Recurrence of warning-in-context-still-launched: called mempalace_status / _diary_read / _kg_query as part of the /wake-up procedure despite MEMORY.md's note that the mine was still active and hooks remained DISABLED. Steward rejected the tool calls and named the constraint. Updated feedback-warning-in-context-still-launched.md to flag wake-up procedure as a known trigger (the skill's MemPalace block must be skipped — not executed — when the mine is active). Same pattern as morning's framing-shift catch and noon's L2-PARKED catch: rules-and-warnings-present-but-inert-at-moment-of-action. Pattern is the day's most stubborn drift.
  • Reference saved — reference-chamber-source-may-2026-typography-folder.md for /Users/davidglidden/Documents/___The Library [ePub_AWZ3] (new foundational typography titles staged for chamber processing). Pickup post-mine, ahead of next chamber cruft restoration session. Apply EPUB repair pipeline + Alexandrian per-file craft standard.

Open horizons (evening)

  • Pulling thread (steward's stated direction): ARC PDF/Print posture session per project-arc-pdf-print-postures-session-plan.md (~6h focused, XeLaTeX templates for both postures, Readings spec as test substrate, deliverables include AldineXXI §I sample images). Held until energy permits and current side-context resolves.
  • Steward-side moves available: (a) check Seb's engagement on PR #172 / #165 / #167; (b) respond to Seb if/when he replies; (c) post-May pickup of L2 elevation work.
  • L2 elevation for PENDING-20: deferred to June 2026. Do NOT initiate cluster declaration or registry drafting before then.
  • Hooks restoration: cp ~/.claude/settings.json.backup-2026-05-14-pre-mine-completion ~/.claude/settings.json after mine cleanly exits. Steward authorization to confirm mine completion before restoration.
  • Chamber substrate sequencing: new typography titles in ___The Library [ePub_AWZ3] waits on mine completion AND on integration into the chamber cruft restoration workflow. Per-file craft standard, not batch processing.

Confidence to recalibrate

  • Symmetria fired late at wake-up, not before action. Init step "report active" happened only after the misstep was caught by the steward. Reorder: when /wake-up procedure includes any external-system call (MemPalace, gh, network), Symmetria check must fire BEFORE the parallel tool-call block, not after the briefing. Specifically: at the point where the procedure says "query MemPalace," explicit check against current MEMORY.md constraints (active mines, disabled hooks, broken substrate). Today's wake-up procedure should have surfaced "mine active, skip MemPalace block, note in briefing" as its first move, not initiated parallel calls.

Wrap-up (post-evening session)

Returns

  • Wrap-up ~now — Caught the would-be third instance of warning-in-context-still-launched before action: /wrap-up procedure's steps 4 (MemPalace drawer) and 5 (MemPalace KG) would have triggered MCP calls against an active mine. Explicitly SKIPPED both steps; documented the skip in the session memory file and the steward summary. This time the check fired pre-action, not post — the pattern's discipline landing properly at the third pass of the day.
  • Three architectural reframings absorbed in one session: my §I.j-within-AldineXXI premise → jurist's two-document hierarchy; my em-dash-as-French-tiret conflation → cadratin/demi-cadratin distinction; my block-form-uses-chevrons error → block-indent-only rule. Each correction sharpened the spec rather than weakening it. Worth holding: jurist input as substrate-deepening, not error-flagging.
  • Steward fatigue honoured at session end. Explicit choice (commit + push + wrap) over continuing into refinement work. The session was long (5 commits, 5 distinct architectural arcs); the natural breakpoint at "what to commit?" was the right place to stop.

Open horizons (wrap-up)

  • Pulling thread for tomorrow: mempalace recall-quality test, contingent on mine completion. Morning sequence: check mine → restore hooks → launch repair to prune orphaned drawers → test MCP recall with Brown gloss substrate.
  • Refinement work tracked: project-multilingual-typography-refinement-2026-05-14.md (~3-5h to v1.0 LOCKED).
  • Phase 2 + 3 EB Garamond tracked: project-eb-garamond-update-2026-05-14.md.
  • Readings post (Task #7): fresh-energy hour whenever ready.
  • Spanish typography pass skill: parallel to French; awaits jurist authorization shape.
  • Hooks restoration when mine completes: cp ~/.claude/settings.json.backup-2026-05-14-pre-mine-completion ~/.claude/settings.json.

Confidence to recalibrate

  • High for the session's deliverables (5 commits landed cleanly; multilingual spec at operational quality; A4 + Van de Graaf canon working).
  • Held for the recall-quality test outcome — the question of whether the corpus surfaces meaningful cross-corpus connections post-repair is the substantive validation point.
  • The /wrap-up MemPalace skip is correct discipline for the active-mine case. Worth proposing as an addition to the /wrap-up skill: when active-mine state is detected (PID alive + hook backup present), explicitly skip MemPalace steps + note skip in output. Currently the skill doesn't name this case; the discipline lived in the executor's catch this time. Could be productively codified.

Sub-agent dialogues

(none this session)

Bypasses

  • MemPalace steps 4 + 5 SKIPPED during wrap-up per the active-mine constraint. Session memory file (the alternative store) was written instead. Authorized bypass; documented above and in the wrap-up output to steward.
