David F GliddenandClaude Opus 4.7 e9e772d69c memory: bundle accumulated 04-17/26 + lock ARC about-page architecture
Safety checkpoint before deep-audit Phase 0 of the ARC repo. Steward-authorized
commit-everything for rollback safety.

ARC architectural locks (2026-04-26 evening):
- Path 1 enfilade structure (separate Colophon and Lex items)
- 8-door enfilade locked: Colophon · Lex · Framework · Vignette · Attention ·
Chamber · Tools · Now (+ Bio quiet link)
- Adsum and threshold-hic as two distinct texts on the reflowed About page
(steward verbatim: "They are certainly not the same text")

ARC consolidation pass (canonical tracker project-arc-rework.md, +~700 lines):
fold 04-23 evening (Norris read), 04-24 (lex-method authored, posture cluster,
§XII Sidenotes, ARC CLAUDE.md cleanup), 04-25 (marks cluster, colophon-at-scale,
full Vico/Harrison lex-chain), 04-26 (chamber-library walk, cluster scaffolds,
canonical-tracker discipline surfaced).

Sibling-file integration: four 2026-04-26 frame files folded into the canonical
tracker (Integrations A/B/C/D) with INTEGRATED redirect notices retained as
audit trail.

New durable feedback memories:
- feedback-canonical-workstream-tracker-discipline (umbrella drift surfaced
  2026-04-26 by steward; proposes /wake-up + /wrap-up amendments)
- feedback-catalogues-stale-walk-trees (steward feedback on chamber-library
  catalogue currency)

Implementation plan drafted for the coming week: Phase 0 deep audit → Phase 5
cleanup, with steward additions on second pass (deep audit; Chamber v1 as own
browsable archive; clean rebuild of cluster sources rather than moving test
artifacts as canon).

Also bundled (untracked accumulation since 04-17):
- ~24 session memory + ledger files for 04-17 through 04-26 work
- ~10 feedback memories (BMF + ARC + working-method)
- 5 project memories (lex-as-method, strunk-white queue, plus today's four)
- 4 user memories (duality-rules, formation-practice, foundation-work, humic-layer)

Steward-side modifications also in this commit: ~/CLAUDE.md, bin/bmf-start.sh,
open-tasks.md, project-focus-april-may.md, session-2026-04-17 — all
pre-existing, not from today's session.

name: Rules-and-poetic duality — rule as mechanism, metaphor as mnemonic for dwelling in constraint description: Steward's articulated working method: rules serve skills/agents (who serve him, mutually); poetic/metaphoric layer functions as mnemonic device so one dwells in the constraint and finds freedom through it, not from it. Held close for ARC style-guide gather; applies regardless of domain (viola, ARC, fathering, L2). type: user originSessionId: 0e858bcf-ef4e-46c6-9eca-abd19836786a

The duality — rules and poetic-as-mnemonic

Steward's articulation (2026-04-23 evening, after Norris read)

"when we revisit this in more detail for the ARC style-guide work, that I would like to keep that duality — the rules are meant to help the skills and agents to help me help them help me (if that makes sense), but the poetic/metaphoric are meant … almost as a mnemonic device so that one dwells in the constraint and finds freedom. I would like to hold this close as it resonates deeply with me and what I have always tried to do regardless of domain."

This was offered in response to my observation that Mary Norris's Between You & Me holds two tracks simultaneously — the literal rule (where to put the hyphen) and what the mark is (a vector, a breath, Manuzio's knife-cut, the actor turning toward the absent) — and never collapses them.

What the two layers do

The rule layer = practical mechanism. Serves the skills/agents that help the steward so that he can help them. A recursive mutual-service relationship, consistent with his reverence-to-teachers practice extended to tools. Not tool-use; discourse.

The poetic/metaphoric layer = mnemonic device in the deep sense. Not "memory aid" as trivial cleverness; mnemonic as that which makes a thing re-enterable. The metaphor is what keeps you in the rule long enough for the freedom to open. Without the poetic layer, a rule is a gate you pass through. With it, the rule becomes a room you can dwell in.

The freedom the steward names is not freedom from the constraint — it is freedom through it. The violist's reality: the score doesn't release you by being transcended; you find its depth by inhabiting it until the notation becomes the thing, not the map.

Scope

"Regardless of domain." This is a working method everywhere:

  • Viola / ensemble playing (score as dwellable room)
  • ARC (typology as dwellable room for writing practice)
  • Fatherhood (stewardship as dwellable constraint)
  • CapableMind L2 (invariants as dwellable constraints, not laws to transcend)

The style-guide session, when it happens, will therefore not be just a prose-typography project. It will be a codification of this lifelong method at the scale of prose. Danger: producing a narrower artifact than what is actually being built. Antidote: hold this memory load-bearing in the gather.

How to apply

  • In ARC style-guide work: preserve the duality structurally. §1 rules + §0 (or equivalent) poetic framing. Neither layer ornamental. Neither eclipsing the other.
  • When drafting any rule-shaped artifact for the steward (spec, guide, protocol): if the artifact is purely mechanical or purely metaphorical, it has failed his method. Both layers, always.
  • In executor posture: treat the steward's rules as dwellable rooms, not gates. When a constraint seems limiting, pause and ask whether the poetic/metaphoric layer has been surfaced yet — the freedom is usually through the rule, not around it.
  • When naming something in the steward's domain: look for the metaphor that makes the mechanism re-enterable. Norris's "apostrophe-as-prayer," Teall's "good compounding is a manifestation of character," the violist's "comma with vibrato" — these are the shape.
