David F GliddenandClaude Opus 4.8 3f9a89b00c chore(memory): Basic Memory trial begins — sync normalization baseline (283 files)
Basic Memory v0.21.6 first sync over the live memory dir (steward-authorized
live-dir trial, Option A 2026-06-06): adds permalink: to frontmatter, refolds
long YAML description lines, strips final newlines. Bodies untouched —
verified via full diff classification. From this commit forward, any diff in
claude/memory shows only what Basic Memory or the session writes.

Trial design: MemPalace untouched as incumbent; git status check on this dir
at every wrap; end-of-day evaluation (recall quality, sync robustness,
rebuild-from-files, malformed-file behavior).

Session 2026-04-15 — recall validated, Symmetria installed, wake/wrap evolved Substrate validated end-to-end on real vault data (sub-second recall); five bottleneck fixes shipped (#154-158); Symmetria practice-of-return skill installed; /wake-up + /wrap-up revised with the Dasein frame. Pulling thread is the shape project 1c1bf37d-b1c3-4a62-9355-613c50f4c028 claude-memory/session-2026-04-15-recall-symmetria

Session 2026-04-15 — Recall + Symmetria + Wake/Wrap

This was a multi-act day. Continuation of session-2026-04-14-migration-completion.md (predecessor) and session-2026-04-13-storage-trial.md (storage migration that preceded both).

Future — what is pulling

The pulling thread (singular)

The shape #145 takes on Seb's review — boolean bridge vs multi-mode retention contract — because it determines whether ProjectionChain becomes its own amendment or another mode in a unified taxonomy.

This is the architectural decision that gates everything downstream. If summarizable: boolean ships as a bridge with a deferral note, ProjectionChain is its own L1 amendment (a fifth chain). If the multi-mode retention frame holds (ephemeral / shelved / structured / vectorized / summary / reference / projection), ProjectionChain becomes another mode in a unified retention taxonomy — and the architecture simplifies dramatically. The pause-as-event work + Phase 3 work + Phase 2 consolidation hooks all reshape around it.

The pause statement

David is going for a walk with Kai. Return time uncertain — could be 30 minutes, could be later today, could be longer if Kai needs more. While we are away, Seb may wake, drink his Americano in Bewdley, and react to: the handoff doc, the #145 archivist comment, the four open questions, the regression test on the trial branch, the five closed bottleneck issues. He may also have his own overnight thinking about the multi-mode frame from his and David's prior conversations.

I am about to be away from this. I don't know what will have changed when I return. I want to find still pulling: the shape Seb gave #145, whether explicit or implicit in his response.

Literal question for next-Claude

Has Seb engaged with the multi-mode retention / archivist frame on #145, and if so what shape did the contract take? Is it the boolean bridge (with a deferred-named comment), the multi-mode retention contract, or has he gone in a third direction we didn't anticipate?

Hold this open. Don't try to answer it before checking. The first move on /wake-up should be: read #145 + Seb's recent commits + his daily log if he writes one + any new amendment doc he may have filed.

Other open horizons, ranked

Load-bearing (waits on Seb):

  • L1 amendment for ProjectionChain — do not draft until #145 shape is known. Shape may be radically different under multi-mode retention.
  • L1 amendment for Pause-as-event — slightly less coupled to #145, but still benefits from waiting until the L1 contract vocabulary is settled.
  • Per-instance migration plan for Atlas/Dexter/Sawyer/Scully — strictly Seb's territory; not for executor without him.

Mechanical, can be done in any burst window:

  • README index update via /audit — three new files in docs/thinking/David/ and docs/thinking/Seb/amendments/ not yet indexed.

Deferred with reason:

  • #147 (note summarization restore) — only after #145 lands or a faster summarizer wired.
  • Pre-existing storage-lance.ts TODOs (updateChunkEmbeddingLance, deleteChunksByModelLance) — Seb's call after he reads the #145 comment. Until resolved, every commit touching storage-lance.ts requires --no-verify (4 such bypasses today; pattern named).

Parked without deadline:

  • The four other proposed skills (/care-check, /where-were-we, /translate-for-peter, /threshold) — captured in parked-skills-2026-04-15.md. Decision principle: ship when friction shows up in real session work, not preemptively.

Past — what we did

Act 1 — Read Seb's overnight work, ran bottleneck audits

Seb shipped 5 commits on trial/storage-sqlite-lance overnight:

  • 2d75770 per-dataDir lockfile (resolves stale-daemon detection problem we'd flagged)
  • 4f5b870 wired-BMF NFCorpus harness (partially closes #151)
  • ab8062a meld invite-code case-insensitive fix
  • e8cc43a meld test port (closes #140)
  • 3688ace pre-merge sweep — fail-loud telemetry + zombie code removal + honest epistemic fields (closes #141, #142, #146, #150)

I closed/commented relevant issues, then ran 4 parallel read-only audit agents (debugger subtype) on the bottlenecks identified yesterday. All 4 returned with specific file:line references + numerical confidence. Filed [FIX] issues #154-157 with evidence-backed root causes.

Act 2 — Implemented all 5 bottleneck fixes

Five commits on trial/storage-sqlite-lance:

  • 19ba661 — four bottleneck fixes (#154-157) in one commit. Entity persist db.transaction() wrap; HNSW + compaction wired into afterReplay plus POST /v1/admin/optimize-vector-index; keep_alive: -1 on Ollama embeddings + generative.
  • 82a0ded — #158 cosine distance→similarity formula vestige fix (1 - distance/2 → 1 - distance for cosine).
  • d34d092 — #155 numSubVectors correction (96 → 128, for 1024-dim divisibility).
  • 4ef8f5b — #154 regression test. New file persist-batch-perf.test.ts asserts batched-transaction pattern stays. 200 entities + 50 relationships in <500ms (observed 49ms; was ~12s pre-fix). Threshold overridable via BM_PERF_TEST_THRESHOLD_MS.

Act 3 — Recall validated end-to-end on real vault data

Live test of POST /v1/admin/optimize-vector-index on partial-ingest state (2,361 chunks): index built in 5.6s, compaction collapsed 2,625 fragments → 1, freed 318 MB. Subsequent recall("coffee") returned 5 semantically relevant results in milliseconds, top match confidence 1.0. Substrate proven on real vault content. Issue #155 closed with live evidence.

Act 4 — Strategic conversation + Symmetria design + handoff doc

Conversation went deep on the Heideggerian frame: dead (logchain) / living (queries) / unborn (no current substrate). Sketched Phase 1 → Phase 2 → Phase 3 architecture. Drafted handoff doc to Seb at ~/_Dev/CapableMind-AI/docs/thinking/David/l1-reliability/2026-04-15-handoff-to-seb.md.

Designed Symmetria — discipline skill keeping prime directive foregrounded under context pressure. v1 framed it as check-and-balance; after reading the steward's poetic Prime Directive (vault: 00. Compass/00a. Foundations/01. Cornerstones/01. Prime Directive.md), rewrote as v2 PRACTICE OF RETURN. Fittingness elevated to first question. Three dimensions (craft/ethics/character) framed as equal partners. Ledger records returns not failures (sections: Returns, Open horizons, Confidence to recalibrate, Authorization moves, Sub-agent dialogues, Bypasses). Greek name from epigraph: συμμετρία bridges μέτρον (measure) and τὸ πρόσφορον (the fitting). Installed at ~/.claude/skills/symmetria/SKILL.md.

Act 5 — #145 archivist/librarian discussion + comment

David surfaced ongoing discussion with Seb framing memory not as "remember everything" but as keeping a reliable archivist/librarian who points to what's needed. Sticky notes (ephemeral), shelved documents (notebooks), database entries (structured). Posted comment on #145 with six possibly-unconsidered lines of inquiry, framed explicitly as prompts not conclusions (link). Pushed CapableMind-AI docs as d859dba (handoff + Symmetria spec + skipDispatch amendment).

Act 6 — Wake/wrap evolution + parked-skills capture

Recognized that the existing /wake-up and /wrap-up skills are memory restoration but not waking — they capture facts and decisions but not the future tense (the pulling thread, the unborn). Rewrote both with Dasein-frame additions:

/wrap-up additions: pulling thread (singular), pause statement (gap as phenomenon), literal question for next-Claude (the unborn), Symmetria ledger merge.

/wake-up additions: pause acknowledgment first, pulling thread before facts, literal question held verbatim, Symmetria auto-init for non-trivial sessions, mood signal from previous ledger.

Floated nine other potential skills; ranked honestly; proposed only two for tier-1 (/care-check, /where-were-we); explicitly dropped three as solving fictional problems; parked the rest at parked-skills-2026-04-15.md.

Past — decisions with rationale

  • Skill name symmetria over alternatives (to-prosforon, metron, keep-faithful, measure-twice, proportionate). συμμετρία is the bridge term between μέτρον (measure) and τὸ πρόσφορον (the fitting). Names the relationship, not just one side.
  • Symmetria v2 (practice of return) over v1 (check-and-balance). The poetic Prime Directive's §5 makes correction part of the practice. Same content, different posture. Ledger sections renamed (Returns / Open horizons / Confidence to recalibrate / Authorization moves / Sub-agent dialogues / Bypasses) to embed the §5 frame.
  • keep_alive: -1 on Ollama despite OOM risk on 16GB. Simplest fix that demonstrably resolves idle-unload latency. Adaptive timeout is followup, named in handoff §Open questions for Seb.
  • numPartitions=256, numSubVectors=128 — tuned for 10k-100k vectors. Will need re-tuning at Atlas's 100k+ scale. Named as open question for Seb.
  • #145 comment as prompts, not conclusions. David flagged his framing was a "highly degraded echo." Symmetria's check caught the synthesis-urge (six-row taxonomy was about to lead). Rewrote as numbered questions with explicit "ignore what's already covered" framing.
  • Wake/wrap revisions over building new skills. Three reasons: (a) Dasein-frame additions had concrete known value already designed in conversation; (b) shipping new skills speculatively dilutes Symmetria's clarity; (c) the wake/wrap pair is itself an L0 prototype of the L1 Phase 2 substrate (pause-as-event + projection across discontinuity) — improving them advances the architectural understanding.
  • Four --no-verify bypasses today on the same pre-existing storage-lance.ts TODO trip. Each authorized by steward. Pattern named in ledger as drift-to-habit risk. Resolution path: either fix TODOs (#145) or narrow hook to scan diffs not full files.

Past — decisions explicitly NOT made

  • Did not draft L1 amendments for ProjectionChain or Pause-as-event today. Both are non-trivial focused work; deserve fresh blocks. Also: the multi-mode retention frame from #145 may reshape the ProjectionChain amendment significantly — better to wait for Seb's response.
  • Did not update docs/thinking/README.md with the three new docs. Mechanical task, deferable to /audit later. Seb's handoff was time-sensitive; held the docs commit to prioritize.
  • Did not implement the multi-mode retention model. Steward and jurist are still actively designing this; my role was to surface possibly-unconsidered angles, not to ship the proposal.
  • Did not build seven of the nine proposed skills. Three explicitly dropped as duplicates of Symmetria or solving fictional problems; four parked with decision principle to ship only when their friction shows up in real session work.

Present — the mood of the work

Returns (the practice's actual record)

  • ~07:30 CEST — During audit of LanceDB compaction, returned from acting-without-confirming. Spawned a read-only check on optimize() API signature first; recommendation landed correct on first try.
  • ~08:30 CEST — Returned from the "one line fix" framing for entity persist. Refactor turned out to be ~200 lines. Lowered prior on scope estimates for async/sync boundary work.
  • ~09:50 CEST — Live admin endpoint surfaced the silent numSubVectors divisibility error. Return: confirmed that exercising surfaces is the path to finding silent failures; afterReplay-only would have continued the silent pattern.
  • ~11:00 CEST — Noticed I was answering the 5 Symmetria design questions without invoking /symmetria check. Return: skipping the check in favor of speed is exactly the pattern the skill is designed to catch.
  • ~12:00 CEST — First real /symmetria check. Caught the synthesis-urge on the #145 comment draft. Forced rewrite as prompts not conclusions. First positive data point on the skill actually changing behavior, not just observing it.
  • ~12:00 CEST — Mid-draft, noticed the urge to unify everything into one elegant six-row taxonomy. Named in chat as a contamination smell: aesthetic coherence presenting as structural truth.
  • ~13:50 CEST — Inline Symmetria check before the wake/wrap skills design. Caught a ten-skill enumeration urge ("looking comprehensive" smell). Forced ranking: 2 tier-1, 2 tier-2, 3 explicitly dropped, 4 parked. Honest small set instead of impressive long set.

Confidence to re-examine

  • Scope estimates on existing-code refactors: lower prior. The "cosmetic async wrappers" pattern (pipeline.ts Promise.all) was subtle enough that "one line" was actually a structural rewrite.
  • First-pass hypothesis under time pressure: lower prior. Yesterday I proposed three different root causes before landing the actual one. Under pressure, early hypotheses are more likely to be convenient than correct.
  • Index parameter defaults: lower prior. numSubVectors=96 shipped without divisibility check; Lance surfaced loudly but the failure made it to a production-path commit.
  • Skill ideas in proposal stage: I floated nine; three dropped under scrutiny. Lower prior on "ideas that sound clever in proposal stage." The honest count of useful new skills is probably 1–2 from any brainstorm batch.
  • Symmetria evaluation contamination dynamic: I co-designed it; will over-report usefulness. Counter-commitment: bias toward neutral/negative observations. Steward explicitly flagged this; honor it in future sessions.

Tensions visible but not resolved

  • The four --no-verify pattern: authorization can drift from conscious to habitual when repeated on the same trip. Named in ledger; needs structural fix (resolve TODOs via #145, or narrow hook).
  • keep_alive: -1 on Ollama: demonstrably fixes idle-unload latency, but pins all models including graduated slot models. Could OOM on 16GB. Open question for Seb.
  • Symmetria value — only one positive data point. Need more sessions. Real evaluation requires patience plus the contamination-aware framing I committed to.

Steward preferences captured this session

  • --no-verify is one-shot per case with explicit reason in commit body; not a general license. David authorized four times today on the same pre-existing TODO trip; pattern noted.
  • Practice-of-return framing for Symmetria. Specifically endorsed: ledger records returns (not failures), fittingness as first question, three-dimensions framing.
  • Burst-window working. David is solo with infant Kai 48+ hours, working in 20-30 min windows. Tasks should be sized for those windows. Big-block work (amendments) should wait for free blocks.
  • Contamination dynamic on Symmetria evaluation explicitly flagged — I co-designed it; will over-report usefulness. Counter-move discussed; ledger as actual data, not curated proof.
  • Three artifacts to reach Seb's morning: handoff doc, Symmetria spec, skipDispatch amendment. All shipped as d859dba.
  • #145 comment posture: prompts, not conclusions. Working from a partial sketch of his ongoing discussion with Seb. Explicit "ignore what's already covered" framing required.
  • Decision principle for new skills: ship when friction shows up in real session work, not preemptively. Speculative skills dilute the clarity of those that earn their keep.
