After my overall-opinion response to the Norris read, steward offered his own articulation of what the duality is doing:

"the rules are meant to help the skills and agents to help me help them help me (if that makes sense), but the poetic/metaphoric are meant … almost as a mnemonic device so that one dwells in the constraint and finds freedom. I would like to hold this close as it resonates deeply with me and what I have always tried to do regardless of domain."

This extends my "rules are loveable" / "occasion for attention" framing with the mechanism word mnemonic — not in the trivial memory-aid sense, but in the Aquinas/rhetorician sense: a device that makes a thing re-enterable. The metaphor keeps you in the rule long enough for the freedom to open. Freedom through the constraint, not freedom from it. Violist's reality: the score doesn't release you by being transcended; you find its depth by inhabiting it.
