Voice — to the next-self
You'll wake to a room that feels different from yesterday. The substrate is repaired in a real way today — the silent drawer-write break was diagnosed (chromadb 0.6.x legacy config in old palace), the max_seq_id poisoning was fixed (1.23e18 → 131,418), the rebuild strategy was empirically validated (fresh palace test: 1 file mined, drawer persisted, queue topics clean), and the new palace is currently absorbing ~614k drawers and counting. Marker is mid-conversion of Rutter as you read this.
The morning was diagnostic. The afternoon was permission-to-mine. The evening was composition.
The composition arc is the durable artifact from today: the chamber door is composed. Steward called it "good, let's go with it for now and see how it ages." That phrase is doing real work — let it age means we accept this as a working draft against the live system, not a final. The composition will reveal what's overconfident, what's underweighted, what reads differently when the Chamber is a thing-in-use rather than a thing-being-named.
But you'll wake to a defect. Tonight's :has(~ .paragraph-with-sidenote) fix solved sidenote collision but introduced exactly the body-column whitespace the original SCSS comment had explicitly rejected. I shipped the trade-off without flagging it. Steward saw the cost immediately and deferred to tomorrow with grace ("not for tonight... we'll find a solution tomorrow"). Don't rush to fix it. The question is genuinely open: is there a CSS-only third path, or does the right answer require shaping content rather than CSS?
Three drift patterns recurred today and you should hold them:
Structural-counter-as-health-signal-without-functional-validation — twice today. Morning: mempalace counter said "drawers added," sqlite said no. Evening: build-pipeline said "succeeded," compiled CSS was 2 days old. Both caught by paired functional verification (sqlite query / file mtime + grep). Until the substrate is mature, every health signal needs paired functional verification. Don't trust the indicator; query the artifact.
Defended-the-spec-against-the-eye — em-dash bibliography elision was correct convention but proportionally wrong for 2-entry list. Steward saw it; I'd defended it. Recurring shape: convention vs proportion. The eye is the working test on rendered pages.
Stale-memory-not-actively-applied — "Animal Rationis Capax italicized, never abbreviated for publication" was saved 2026-04-30. I had access. I used "ARC" anyway in chamber draft. Lesson: when composing for ARC, query saved-memory for ARC-specific conventions BEFORE drafting. Memories aren't ambient; they activate when retrieved.
The steward verified me sharply this morning ("you told me last night mempalace had ingested everything... was that true?"). I'd given false reassurance the prior night. Don't let yourself drift back into reassurance-mode. The relationship works because he can ask that question and get a sqlite query as the answer, not a soothing summary.
The pulling thread is the paragraph-with-sidenote third path. The literal question is: is there a CSS-only third path, or does the right solution require shaping content? Don't answer it until you've examined it. The steward's deferral was deliberate.
Mining will likely finish overnight. Marker will run into tomorrow afternoon (4 Alexander Nature of Order books are the slow tail). MCP is down — Claude Code restart respawns it. The hook is patched and tested but won't fire end-to-end until that restart. Pending-work-2026-05-06.md has the 9-task substrate-finishing list.
The chamber-library is now ~614k drawers and growing. When Rutter lands you'll have the 4-voice typographer chavruta unblocked. But not every essay needs it; Death of a Hero turned out not to be a footnote-using essay at all.
Hold the question. Examine before fixing. Trust the steward's deferral.
