ARC capsule apparatus — open design question
Date raised: 2026-05-05 Status: DEFERRED, not REJECTED. Open design question. Door is open. Steward verbatim: "I only decided against because I was unsure of how they would fit: their appropriate usage, and whether that usage wasn't already covered."
Provocation
Reading Norman Davies' Europe: A History — the apparatus of Capsules (self-contained titled mini-compositions punctuating the narrative — etymological, biographical, microhistorical) — made the steward want to design an analogous apparatus for ARC. Decided against for now.
The niche capsules would occupy in ARC

A capsule would be a distinct slot: an embedded mini-essay that adds civilizational density without interrupting the argument. Sidenotes can't do this (they gloss; they're parasitic on the main line). Footnotes can't (they substantiate; they leave the page). A capsule stands as its own composition while remaining inside the work.
Not currently covered. Genuine niche.
Where capsules would earn their seat
- The pedagogical treatise (named near-future ARC project) — etymological capsules on musical terms, biographical capsules on figures (Geminiani, Leopold Mozart, Tartini, Quantz), historical capsules on performance contexts (HIP movement, instrument transitions). This is where capsules become indispensable.
- Lex-method essays — capsules as etymon deep-dives. Vico's lex chain (acorns → comitia → reading → auctores → lexification → dislexification) literally reads as a series of capsules.
- Encyclopedist-mode pages — pieces that benefit from compressed parallel material (e.g., a capsule on Aldus Manutius on a typography page).
Where capsules would be wrong
- The shorter essays (After the Reply was right not to have them — the prose carries its own density without parallel layers).
- The threshold pages (Hic, Adsum, Hearth — composed in a register that wouldn't admit interruption).
Why the deferral was correct for the work in flight
ARC's current compositional projects (After the Reply complete; Hic+Adsum+Hearth complete; AldineXXI spec in active refinement) don't need capsules. Adding the slot would have been premature design — solving for a problem that hadn't yet appeared in the work.
Why the door is open
When the pedagogical treatise enters scope, the question returns to active reach. The treatise's content will demand parallel layers (etymological + biographical + microhistorical) that no existing ARC apparatus provides. That's the moment capsules earn their seat — or get explicitly ruled out for a designed reason.
Substrate now in place to support the eventual return
- Davies' Europe: A History in chamber-library (
traditions/history/europe-davies.mdor similar) — the canonical example of capsule apparatus done well. Will be available for direct citation and study when the design question returns. - The chamber-library music_performance shelf (Taruskin, Heartz, Swafford, Duffin, the violin treatise) — the source material the pedagogical treatise will draw on, where capsules might be applied first.
When the moment arrives, the substrate makes the design question answerable from inside ARC's own corpus, not abstractly.
What would resolve the question
Three sub-questions to settle when the door reopens:
- Visual form. What does an ARC capsule look like? Aldine italic title + body in regular roman? Inset box vs marginal frame vs flowing-with-rule? Reuse of existing register or a new register?
- Length range. Davies' capsules run roughly 12-30 lines. ARC's would presumably be in that range — but does the treatise context (longer-form pedagogical writing) admit longer capsules, or should they be tighter?
- Spec slot. Where does the capsule apparatus live in AldineXXI? Likely a new §-slot under §XII (apparatus); possibly §XII.d (currently noted as the body-block apparatus); needs a clean section number when reopened.

- Pedagogical treatise enters scope (steward's named near-future project)
- An ARC piece in active composition feels like it wants embedded parallel material that current apparatus can't provide
- Engagement with Davies' text in chamber-library produces a clear design analogy
