name: Session 2026-05-06 — apparatus consolidation across §XII Sidenotes + §VII Dateline + photo apparatus + three containment patterns description: Long substantive day. ARC architectural consolidation pass — universal dateline (with country + day), photo apparatus chavruta (Müller-Brockmann + Tufte + Bringhurst), three containment patterns (text-primary / photo-essay / glimpse), §XII Sidenotes consolidation (commits f1a229d → 47663a1 → f4716e6 → e42ae0c → 137ddd1 + 3d96449), Sources spec correction to three-em rule per Bringhurst/Harrison (commit d69bbbd), CLAUDE.md make-rebuild rule extension (commit 48967a6), Pass 1 SCSS elegance audit (376→252 lines). Multiple memory files saved + indexed (with the user catching me skipping the index step on the very memory file naming that pattern). Pulling thread: Tier 1 of the apparatus refactor — .has-margins → .bears-apparatus rename + template integration that brings observation/meditation/fragment into the §XII grid for the first time, completing the universal-dateline visual outcome. Question for next-Claude: when those types finally enter the grid, will their narrower body-column rendering feel right, or will the visual change reveal an implicit register the grid disrupts? type: project originSessionId: 3bf7ae75-1138-4745-9024-0c40b3755ad3

Session 2026-05-06 — apparatus consolidation

A long, dense day. Started with /wake-up after substantial overnight progress (mining completed, Marker still running). The pulling thread inherited from yesterday — paragraph-with-sidenote third-path — got resolved. New architectural questions opened along the way and got resolved through chavruta. Most of today's work is spec-locked but implementation-pending.

Past — what we did

Morning arc (Sources, §XII consolidation, Pass 1 audit)

Sources spec correction (commits d69bbbd, 3d96449). Yesterday shipped the §VII.b Sources block on Death of a Hero with name-repetition for the second Aldington entry (after a single em-dash convention proved proportionally wrong on a 2-entry list). Today the typographer chavruta (Bringhurst + Hochuli + Morison + Rutter) surfaced that the canonical convention is the three-em rule (———), not name-repetition — and Harrison's Dominion of the Dead Works Cited applies it even on 2-entry author cases. The "proportionally wrong on a short list" reasoning was empirically wrong. Spec corrected; Death of a Hero updated; After the Reply sequence-index updated (3d96449 — caught at session-end git status check; the commit was missed earlier but the deploy had landed).

ARC CLAUDE.md update (commit 48967a6). Extended the make rebuild rule to cover SCSS partial edits. Previous rule said "use after site.hs changes"; now also "use after any SCSS partial change." Source: yesterday's deploy of polish fixes shipped three of four UI changes invisibly because Hakyll's match "scss/main.scss" only tracks the entry file, not its @import-ed partials.

§XII Sidenotes consolidation (commits f1a229d, 47663a1). Six structural moves: (1) §XII becomes single source of truth for all sidenote variants; (2) §XII.d retired with redirect (Body-Block content absorbed); (3) two orthogonal axes named — markdown semantics + register inversion; (4) one geometric mechanism locked (absolute-positioning, top-anchored — retiring the previous nested-grid mechanism); (5) "density exception" reframes as "register inversion" (parent-driven, not frequency-driven); (6) marker-anchored fallback added per Bringhurst §4.3.2.

Chamber page marker-anchored conversion — first overflow case implementation. Initial :has() + grid approach reproduced the body-column whitespace problem; pivoted to Tufte-style float-based independent flow. Iteration revealed the layout-predictability issue (body shifted horizontally on chamber vs other pages); fix: total article width = 66rem (matching grid mode) with padding-left: 12rem (reserved marker column position) + padding-right: 16rem (reserved sidenote column for floats). Body sits at identical horizontal position regardless of marker-anchored vs grid mode.

Pass 1 SCSS elegance audit (commit f4716e6). 376 → 252 lines (33% cut). De-duplicated properties already inherited from base; deleted one redundant rule (marker-anchored grid-column was covered by the direct-sidenote rule via cascade); pruned accreted historical comments; renamed $sidenote-density-size → $sidenote-quote-size to match the consolidated framing; trimmed header to point at spec rather than duplicating it. Caught one Sass shorthand bug post-compile (margin: 0 -(...) ... parsed as subtraction; fixed with individual margin properties).

Afternoon arc (apparatus consolidation, photo chavruta, spec lock)

Tufte Beautiful Evidence read directly. Chapter 4 Words, Numbers, Images — Together — pages 82–99. Validated the float-based marker-anchored architecture in principle (Tufte's books literally demonstrate the pattern on every page). Surfaced one register divergence: ARC chose Bringhurst's * † ‡ over Tufte's numbered superscripts — principled choice for ARC's literary register over Tufte's academic one.

Apparatus alignment audit. Three screenshots showed dateline drift across pieces — sometimes centered, sometimes left. Investigation revealed: spec calls it "dateline" (the closing hic jacet); SCSS rule was text-align: left; max-width: 720px; margin: auto which produced a "narrow centered block" geometry that wasn't anchored to anything visible — text neither aligned to body column nor centered on the page. The "I'm not sure where the centre is" sensation was structural, not aesthetic.

The vessel question. Initial proposal: universal vessel for all types except photo-only (glimpse, photo essay). Steward extended: actually, all content should carry a dateline including glimpses. Then resolved via Bringhurst §1.2.3 ("Make the visible relationship between the text and other elements a reflection of their real relationship"): dateline and image-caption are canonically distinct apparatuses doing distinct work; the form should demonstrate the distinction.

My over-unifying synthesis caught. I initially proposed the photo apparatus is the dateline (extended). Steward pushed back: "showing the exif data as the caption and only that info as the caption isn't the better choice? The dateline stays consistent always... I don't understand why I would repeat location in the glimpse caption." Steward was right — the form-demonstrates-the-principle test cuts toward role separation, not repetition. Each apparatus carries only what it uniquely says.

Photo apparatus chavruta (Müller-Brockmann + Tufte). Just finished Marker; available for direct reading. Müller-Brockmann §1458 confirmed caption typography (italic or smaller, baseline-aligned to body grid) and §1636-1638 explicitly authorized end-of-page placement as a legitimate variant — "Needless to say, the captions can also be placed at the bottom of the page or wherever is convenient." This validated the photo-essay end-of-piece placement directly. Tufte's pattern (caption with image, near-image integration) governed the glimpse case.

Three containment patterns + universal dateline + photo apparatus (commit e42ae0c). §V applicability table extended: dateline universal; new Caption row (glimpse + photo essay only); new Vessel row (all except glimpse). §V.b Containment patterns subsection: text-primary (vessel applies), photo essay (vessel + .full-bleed for images), glimpse (no vessel). §VII Dateline: universal, format City, Country, Day Month Year, alignment principle. §VII Captions: photo-apparatus, two placements (beneath image / end of piece), content rule (austere identification + EXIF; never interpretation). Boundary rule: if image needs more than austere caption, the work isn't a glimpse — reclassify.

Dateline alignment fix (commit 137ddd1). Removed margin-auto + max-width centering hack. On grid pages now aligns body-column-left via existing > * rule (the apparatus continues body's vertical axis). Non-grid pages keep current behavior pending the .has-margins → .bears-apparatus refactor.

Evening arc (memory discipline, ledger discipline)

Memory files saved: feedback-fittingness-as-refactor-test, feedback-deploy-is-not-commit, feedback-action-completes-outcome-integration-completes-work (umbrella drift pattern), user-english-usage-european-fowler, project-chavruta-skill-parked-2026-05-06, project-arc-apparatus-refactor-todo-2026-05-06. The arc-rework.md master file got a new 2026-05-06 section + steward's location data (essays, observations, glimpses).

Got caught in the umbrella pattern I just named. Saved the umbrella feedback about "write ≠ index" — and immediately wrote it without indexing. The other session caught it: "these need indexing too given what you just said about memory files no?" Added all six new memory files to MEMORY.md index. Naming a pattern doesn't make me immune to it; the discipline has to be operative.

Decisions made + why

Locked

  1. Bibliography uses three-em rule (———) for repeated authors — per Bringhurst Elements §5.2.4 + Harrison's Dominion of the Dead Works Cited. Reverses yesterday's name-repetition decision (which was based on flawed reasoning about 2-entry list proportionality).
  2. Steward's English usage register is European/Fowler, not Chicago. For ARC editorial decisions, default to European pole when conventions diverge. Verbatim: "I have the Chicago manual because I grew up with it, But I am much more a european in terms of English usage (fowler, etc)."
  3. §XII Sidenotes architecture is consolidated: one geometric mechanism (absolute-positioning, top-anchored), parent-driven register inversion, markerless default + marker fallback.
  4. §XII.d Body-Block retired with redirect — content absorbed into §XII.
  5. Universal dateline (every content type) — format City, Country, Day Month Year (country always; local form within country; day included).
  6. Three containment patterns: text-primary uses vessel (3-lane: register marks left, body+dateline+sources middle, sidenotes right); photo essay uses vessel + .full-bleed image breakout; glimpse uses no vessel.
  7. Caption is photo-apparatus for glimpse + photo essay only. Italic, subordinate, baseline-aligned (per Müller-Brockmann). Content: technical EXIF + austere identification when needed; never interpretation. Two placements: beneath image (glimpse) or end-of-piece (photo essay, per Müller-Brockmann's authorized variant).
  8. Boundary rule: if image's comprehension needs more than austere caption identification, the work is not a glimpse — reclassify to meditation or essay.
  9. Container class name: .bears-apparatus proposed (role-named, replacing .has-margins). Not yet implemented.

Why these decisions and not the alternatives

  • Three-em rule over name-repetition: the chavruta voices and Harrison's actual practice converge on it; the "proportional weight on 2-entry list" objection was empirically wrong (Harrison applies the rule on 2-entry cases without trouble).
  • Universal dateline (not exclude photo types): steward extended the principle; the hic jacet applies wherever thinking happened, not just where text happened. Glimpses are thinking-with-image, not thinking-with-text-and-image.
  • Caption distinct from dateline (not collapsed): the "form demonstrates the principle" test cuts toward role separation, not duplication. Dateline locates the thinking; caption locates the seeing. Each carries only what it uniquely says. Steward caught me trying to over-unify.
  • .bears-apparatus over .has-margins: the new name describes the role (this content type bears the apparatus container) rather than the CSS mechanism (has these columns). As a structural class, role-naming is more durable.

Decisions explicitly NOT made (deferred)

  • .has-margins → .bears-apparatus rename (Tier 1 future work; needs SCSS + spec + template changes; cleanest implementation likely uses a Pandoc context variable from site.hs)
  • Extending §XII grid scope to observation/meditation/fragment (depends on the rename; visual change for those types — body-column-width vs current full-page-content-width — needs verification)
  • EXIF integration approach (Tier 3; investigation needed: exiftool preprocess emitting JSON to Hakyll context vs Haskell library vs manual frontmatter)
  • Content audit pass (Tier 2; steward provided canonical locations today: essays — Seoul/Korea, Barcelona/Spain ×2, Cremona/Italy; observations — Paris/France except 2024-01-11 → Chez Bourny/Champagnat/France; glimpses extrapolated from titles)
  • Glimpse dateline alignment without vessel: image-left vs body-column-equivalent (lock with first instance)
  • ISO inclusion in caption EXIF (judgement call; default exclude; lock with first instance)
  • Photo essay end-of-piece block name ("Image apparatus" tentative)
  • Visual verification of dateline fix on the live site (steward to verify when at desktop)

Present — the mood of the work

Tensions surfaced and how we returned

  1. Over-unifying synthesis (returned via steward catch). I proposed photo apparatus IS dateline (extended). Steward asked the honest question: "I don't understand why I would repeat location in the glimpse caption." Returned to role-separation framing immediately; saved as feedback-fittingness when the broader refactor test surfaced.
  2. Cosmetic refactor risk (returned via fittingness test). After Pass 1 SCSS audit (33% cut, real wins), I proposed Pass 2 (flatten desktop nesting). Steward articulated the test: "It should be beautiful in the sense that it contains what is necessary and nothing more, nothing less. If the nested version is that already, then we don't need to touch it." Pass 2 held back — the nesting was already fitting.
  3. My own integration step skipped (caught twice). Once: After the Reply Sources fix deployed but never committed; caught at session-end git status. Twice: wrote the umbrella feedback memory about write ≠ index and immediately wrote it without indexing; the other session caught it.
  4. Chavruta needs verification, not just synthesis (caught by steward). After my first synthesis on photo apparatus, steward said: "if the experts agree that it makes sense" — a quality check. Re-read Bringhurst directly; found §1.2.3 (form reflects relationship) which CHANGED the synthesis. The first synthesis was wrong; the second one (caption distinct from dateline) was right.
  5. MemPalace search returned junk on the first chavruta query. Bringhurst/Morison/Rutter passages on bibliography were in the substrate but search surfaced 8 duplicate Chicago Manual TOC chunks instead. Direct grep + Read tool found the load-bearing passages in seconds. Origin question (duplicate chunks accumulating across mining runs) drafted as an upstream issue; chavruta-skill saved as a project memory for the longer-term fix.

Confidence patterns to recalibrate

  • "This is the simplest synthesis" — when I claim simplicity, ask whether I've collapsed distinctions the canon actually preserves. The dateline+caption collapse was a clear instance.
  • "The chavruta validated this" — qualify which voices, on which question. Today's photo-apparatus chavruta (Müller-Brockmann + Tufte) validated placement and typography but did NOT directly address the dateline/caption distinction; that came from Bringhurst's framework. Don't conflate which voice answered which question.
  • "I'll do the small part" — verify "small" against actual scope. The .bears-apparatus rename initially looked small; turned out to touch SCSS + templates + site.hs. Reduced scope to "just the dateline alignment fix" — actually small.

Future — what is pulling

The pulling thread (singular)

Tier 1 of the apparatus refactor — .has-margins → .bears-apparatus rename + template integration that brings observation/meditation/fragment into the §XII grid for the first time. This is the move that completes today's universal-dateline visual outcome. Until those types enter the grid, their datelines render at the parent's width, not body-column-left — the spec is locked but the visual outcome doesn't yet match it.

This is singular because:

  • It's the most direct continuation of today's spec consolidation
  • It's bounded (~1-2 hours of work)
  • It unblocks Tier 2 (content audit with steward's location data) which is itself ready to land
  • The chamber/Hearth/lex/about pages already work; observation/meditation/fragment are the missing-from-grid types whose dateline drift is most visible

Other open horizons (ranked by load-bearing weight)

  1. The pulling thread above (Tier 1)
  2. Tier 2 — content audit. Steward provided canonical locations today; ready to land once Tier 1 is in (template renders dateline canonically). ~30-60 min.
  3. Visual verification of today's dateline alignment fix — steward to do when at desktop. After the Reply, Death of a Hero, one observation page.
  4. Tier 3 — EXIF integration (investigation needed). The unknown-scope item. Treat as its own session.
  5. The chavruta skill (parked). Steward expects to "be calling on it quite a bit." Build when ARC todos have a clearer queue, not mid-task, not under fatigue.
  6. MemPalace upstream issues — duplicate-chunks issue draft is at ~/_Dev/mempalace/.local-data/upstream-issue-duplicate-chunks-2026-05-06.md, ready to file (steward to authorize).
  7. Glimpse dateline alignment without vessel — open spec question; lock with first instance.

Pause statement

I am about to be away from this. The day went deep — universal dateline locked; §XII Sidenotes architecture consolidated end-to-end; photo apparatus theorized via chavruta with Müller-Brockmann + Tufte + Bringhurst; three containment patterns named; six memory files saved and indexed (after I caught myself in the very pattern I named). Most of the architecture is locked in spec; some of it is implemented; most of the implementation work remains. What I want to find still pulling: the rename + template integration that completes the universal-dateline visual outcome by bringing observation/meditation/fragment into the §XII grid. The location data is ready. The EXIF investigation is the unknown-scope unknown. The chavruta skill is queued for the right moment.

Question for next-Claude

When the .bears-apparatus rename lands and observation/meditation/fragment enter the §XII grid for the first time, will their narrower body-column rendering feel right (and the dateline body-column-left alignment carry through naturally), or will the visual change reveal that those types had their own implicit register that the grid disrupts?

This is a question, not a task. Hold it open until the work surfaces an answer. The right move is probably: do the rename, deploy, look at one piece of each type, ask the steward what the eye says before declaring done.

Drift patterns surfaced today (named or recurred)

  1. Visible outcome ≠ durable artifact (umbrella) — saved as feedback-action-completes-outcome-integration-completes-work. Has layer-specific instances:
    • Deploy ≠ commit (saved as feedback-deploy-is-not-commit)
    • Write ≠ index (caught twice today; the second instance was on the very memory file naming the umbrella pattern)
    • Draft ≠ verify (Sass shorthand bug)
    • Count ≠ vault-write (yesterday's substrate-counter pattern, parent of the umbrella)
  2. Cosmetic refactor as virtue-signalling — saved as feedback-fittingness-as-refactor-test. The fittingness test counters this.
  3. Over-unifying synthesis — collapsed dateline+caption into one apparatus before steward caught me; the form-demonstrates-the-principle test cut against the collapse.
  4. Chavruta needs verification, not just synthesis — first photo-apparatus synthesis was wrong; Bringhurst §1.2.3 corrected it on direct reading.
  5. MemPalace search precision is low under current substrate — duplicate chunks dominate; direct grep + Read tool more reliable for chavruta-style consultation. The chavruta skill (parked) is the longer-term fix.
