David F GliddenandClaude e8b6ce06a3 session 2026-07-27 evening: PENDING-76/77/78 placed; governance drift-check built + wired into /wake-up
PENDING-76 remanded by jurist — required count returned 0 of 11 (the package's own
IV.2 refinement proved its target category empty); executor recommends withdrawal.
PENDING-77 (5 structural defects) and PENDING-78 (.app preferences) released by the
ruling from needing it. Drift check reports contradicted state claims at every wake
and corrects nothing — detection needs no authorization, correction does.

MEMORY.md compacted 20.5KB -> 17.1KB (budget hook); prior Active Session demoted to
MEMORY-reference.md. CLAUDE.md and REVIEWED.md untouched.

Session Ledger — 2026-07-27

Continues from session-ledger-2026-07-25.md, which carries the 07-27 returns of the previous session (the two supersessions + the source_lines sweep). This ledger opens the session that began after the context clear at ~19:41.

Returns

  • 2026-07-27T19:42 — ⚑ The wake's link-resolution canary threw a FALSE POSITIVE. It reported the-maturation-of-the-chamber-a-dialogue-2026-06-28.md as a dead pointer; the file exists at ~/_Dev/studium-engine/docs/. The canary resolves ../../../../ through the memory dir's logical path, which does not match its physical path (~/.claude symlink layer). Caught by checking the substrate before reporting the pointer as broken — the check I would have skipped is exactly the one the briefing needed. The instrument needs a fix, not the index. Open horizon below.

  • 2026-07-27T19:43 — ⚑ Census read through a silently-broken instrument (§3 flag, live). ls is aliased to eza in this shell; three globbed listings this wake (ls -lt … | head, ls -t session-*.md, ls session-ledger-2026-07-2*.md) returned empty output rather than an error, while the files demonstrably exist (find confirms; the 07-25 ledger read fine directly). No conclusion was harmed — pause length came from git commit timestamps instead, and the ledger was read by path — but an empty listing that looks like "no such files" is the exact false-clean shape. Reusable: in this shell, use find/test -e for existence claims, never a globbed ls.

  • 2026-07-27T20:05 — ⚑ Third instrument failure, same family, during the breakage sweep — and this one produced a false CLEAN. My CI-04 sweep printed count: 0 for max_tokens across all of mempalace while "max_tokens": 2048 sits at llm_client.py:416. Cause: -g '!*.jsonl' passed unquoted — zsh glob-expanded it, failed to match, and aborted the whole command; the empty output read as "no matches." A prior run reported rg exit: 2 (an error) which I misread as "no match" because PIPESTATUS is 1-indexed in zsh. Caught only because I ran a positive control alongside. Three failures now (ls→eza silent-empty, PIPESTATUS misread, unquoted glob abort) — all the same shape: a search that never ran is indistinguishable in prose from a search that found nothing. The jurist brief demanded raw command output for exactly this reason, and was right. Standing rule earned: every zero in a sweep needs a same-invocation positive control and a captured exit code; quote every -g glob.

Open horizons

  • Fix the wake link-canary's path resolution — resolve each pointer against the memory file's physical directory (e.g. cd "$(dirname "$(readlink -f MEMORY.md)")" or resolve with python3 -c 'os.path.realpath') before testing existence. Small, and the canary is worthless until it is right: a canary that cries wolf trains its reader to ignore it. Candidate skill-harvest patch at next housekeeping slot.
  • The pulling thread, unchanged and untouched: which purpose anchors Chamber V1, and what bounded voice-set + capability envelope does it need? Third time it is being carried across a seam.

Confidence to recalibrate

  • 2026-07-27T19:44 — Confidence that the wake briefing's four "unresolved" items are genuinely open: 0.95 — verified against substrate for all four (musil sidecar carries no voice_purity block; the three ARC _migration_assigned flags present by name; no REVIEWED-74 entry exists in ~/REVIEWED.md; spec header reads v2.8.0 with voice_purity ×4 in graduation-spec.yaml). This is the first wake to run under the substrate-check patch authorized ~an hour ago, written in response to the previous wake stating the same class of claim from disposition clauses alone. The patch did work it was built for on its first firing.
  • Carried forward from the 07-25 ledger and still live: comparing two implementations felt like derivation and was selection (0.9 held where ≲0.5 was warranted). The shape to watch today: selection dressed as derivation — especially if the V1-purpose question gets answered by picking among the three named purposes rather than deriving from what the steward must actually do with the Chamber.
