David F GliddenandClaude Opus 4.8 3f9a89b00c chore(memory): Basic Memory trial begins — sync normalization baseline (283 files)
Basic Memory v0.21.6 first sync over the live memory dir (steward-authorized
live-dir trial, Option A 2026-06-06): adds permalink: to frontmatter, refolds
long YAML description lines, strips final newlines. Bodies untouched —
verified via full diff classification. From this commit forward, any diff in
claude/memory shows only what Basic Memory or the session writes.

Trial design: MemPalace untouched as incumbent; git status check on this dir
at every wrap; end-of-day evaluation (recall quality, sync robustness,
rebuild-from-files, malformed-file behavior).

## Voice — to the next-self
You wake into one job. The plan doc at `~/.claude/projects/-Users-davidglidden/memory/project-bge-m3-full-remine-plan-2026-05-11.md` is the load-bearing artifact. Read it carefully on wake. Don't get pulled into past threads — Marker history, conversion campaign, footnote work, library survey are done. The steward's instruction was clear: *"the cleared context to have one job: remining everything cleanly, worthy of prime directive insofar as that is possible."*
The work to honor: the bge-m3 test on PR #442 confirmed what the steward's been wanting since April. Cross-language semantic retrieval works on first query. English "italic for emphasis" pulled the Lexique Imprimerie Nationale French passage at cosine 0.64 with zero lexical overlap. Bachelard French retrieved from English query. Harrison's idiosyncratic "humic" vocabulary retrieved coherently. Trilingual typographic corpus — Lacroux, Sousa, Bringhurst — converges in the same semantic space. The maintainer (NickShtefan) had explicitly asked for this test; the comment is now posted at PR #442. That loop is closed.
The next 48 hours: replace the mxbai 639k palace with a fully-mined bge-m3 palace covering all of chamber-library. ~13-15 hours wall-clock for ~700k drawers. The steward is on a flight in ~10 hours; will check in via `/remote-control` periodically during their 48-hour trip.
The honest risk: PR #442's branch does NOT yet contain 3.3.5's concurrent-writer lock-fix (#1162) or HNSW quarantine helpers (#1339, #1342). Mid-mine HNSW corruption is possible. Mitigation: MCP killed throughout (single writer = deterministic), no other Claude Code session active. Recovery: sqlite layer is durable; 3.3.5's `repair --mode from-sqlite` (#1310) rebuilds HNSW from the sqlite truth (~74 min per #1401 verification) when it ships.
The steward's prior cleanup decision (2026-05-05) deleted the previous broken bge-m3 palace, foreclosing the recovery option. Honest accounting was given. This re-mine reconstructs from scratch. The source content is intact; only the embeddings need recomputing.
**Drift patterns to hold today:**
- *Cleanup decisions can foreclose recovery options* — when something is "broken but the embedding cost is real," preserve until the recovery tool ships. Future cleanup passes should think this way.
- *Thoroughness as sign of respect* — the steward's instruction on the PR comment. When the maintainer asks for a test report, the right move is comprehensive over brief. Maintainers spend their evenings on this.
- *Source durability vs derived cost* — markdown content stays on disk; embeddings are derived. When in doubt, preserve source; recompute derivations.
**Don't:** touch ARC SCSS work, engage Marker, restart MCP, kill the mine unilaterally, survey the source library (that's post-trip work).
**Do:** execute steps 1-3 of the plan, then monitor remotely. Report status when the steward pings. Surface failures honestly. Hold the question of HNSW survival open until empirically resolved.
The Chamber gets its multilingual palace. Lacroux speaking with Sousa speaking with Bringhurst speaking with Harrison speaking with Bachelard, in the same semantic space, indexed faithfully. That's the work.
