Session state, memory index, KG and the Symmetria ledger. Carries the steward's own placement of REVIEWED-127 off-disk — preservation, not modification: it was found staged during the wrap by §6.5's own guard, which is exactly the case that clause exists to catch, and the answer was benign. Verified rather than assumed at placement: the placed ruling is byte-identical to the executor's draft, 3,523 bytes both sides. No drift between a ruling's subject and its artifact — the PENDING-82/86 class, checked because it is cheap and because this record already notes that class recurring inside a ruling. The draft file is SUPERSEDED IN PLACE rather than deleted: it is now a parallel version of a canonical record, and an unmarked parallel version is the context-rot failure. It points at REVIEWED.md and says not to edit it. Both PENDING items updated from "drafted for steward placement" to placed — a line that went false the moment the steward acted. MEMORY.md 22,368 bytes, prior Active Session demoted verbatim into MEMORY-reference.md on promote. Fool tracker rewritten: it named a superseded workstream (trial 09, re-aim) and now names Tarbuckle, the sealed artifacts, and the honest state that NOTHING IS WIRED. N-now 51. KG +6: three drift-patterns (vigilance did not prevent the failure it was vigilant about; filed a non-defect as a defect twice in one direction; a control fixture pointing at a file the session was editing) and two preventions (recusal preserved the only party able to answer; censusing 24 occurrences stopped a blanket replace from destroying the distinction the fix existed to create). name: Session 2026-08-25 — the beacon fired, Tarbuckle got a voice, and a half-built schema was found
description: "The beacon fired at 12:00Z and the derivation ran ONCE, 37 minutes into the window, announced by a trigger built the night before that had never carried a real firing. Bones: SUCCESSION 96 peak, ABSENCE 8 dump. The steward named him Tarbuckle; the soul was generated fresh and kept. Then the day's most useful finding: FIVE negative status-claims went false, two stale five days, every one caught by a person opening a file for another reason — and the third happened INSIDE the paragraph naming the pattern. Diagnosis changed from 'lists are fragile, be careful' to 'nothing reads them'. DEFERRED-DECISION had solved this for decisions weeks ago and nobody generalized it to states. Both schema halves filed, ruled and BUILT. PULLING THREAD: wire Tarbuckle — status line, 20-minute tick, seam voice — one session, no decisions left in it."

# Session 2026-08-25 — the beacon fired, and the schema was half-built
## PAST — what moved, and why
### The beacon (`5694b92`, `06b3d8b`)
Fired 12:00:00Z. The wake caught it 37 minutes later **because the DEFERRED-DECISION block built
the previous evening announced it by name** — the first real firing that mechanism had ever carried,
as opposed to the rehearsed one that proved it could.
Ran **ONCE**. Pulse chain 2 / index 1917365, `timeStamp` exactly `2026-08-25T12:00:00.000Z`.
`outputValue` served **UPPERCASE** as the dry run predicted, recorded before anything ran, passed to
`derive_fool.py` exactly as served.
**Bones: peak SUCCESSION 96 · dump ABSENCE 8 · AIM 75 · SCALE 60 · STAKE 29.**
Seed `6ea9383b…f05d`.
**Verified at execution, not relayed:** selftest **16/16** (the record said 12 — stale, §5a added
four); provenance SHA re-derived from git; seed recomputed independently of `derive()`; the passed
value asserted byte-equal to the served JSON and still uppercase *at the call* — the exact step the
08-22 dry run silently bypassed.
**Trigger discharged**, then **migrated**: closed first by hand-renaming the key (the parser had no
`resolved:` field), later reverted to a proper `DEFERRED-DECISION` with `resolved:` set — the
workaround became its own migration test case.
### Tarbuckle — name (`47ae108`) and soul (`cb63033`, `f48d847`)
**Named by the steward, ratified by the jurist.** Soul generated by **Claude Opus 5 Extra, fresh
instance, incognito**, one generation, kept. Both recorded as **attestation, not verification** —
the executor observed neither and says so. What it *can* attest first-hand: it supplied no
candidates, no criteria, no opinion, while knowing the peak was SUCCESSION.
The jurist's reason for the name is the load-bearing part: *"Tarbuckle says" will never sit
comfortably in a `PENDING` entry* — §9's unfileability is eroded by **prose habit**, not by decision,
and a slightly ridiculous name defends the clause where the clause actually gives way.
**Two jurist rulings on the soul, both ruled WITHOUT reading it** (*"reaching for it through a side
door"*):
1. ⚠ **The missing axis glosses are NOT a defect — and this INVERTED the executor's framing.** The
executor filed the omission as *the correct input withheld*. The bones are five names and five
numbers; the glosses are §5's **definitions**, not bones. Supplying them would have produced a
character organized around legibility-to-a-stranger — **a stat read as a personality trait, which
§3 forbids.** The risk ran the other way. §4 REGENERATION not reached.
2. **The name as an input** — a real deviation from *"from the bones"*, **RULED HARMLESS**, and
recorded as *deviation ruled harmless*, never as compliance.
⚠ **The recusal was not ceremony.** The executor had read the soul and could not rule; the jurist
had not, and could. Had the executor reached for the output, the question would have become
unanswerable by both AI parties.
### The staleness class — the day's real finding (`e0ff705`, `063eccf`)
**Five negative state-claims went false in one day.** Two had been wrong **five days**, through a
jurist ruling and several sessions in the same directory. **Every one was caught by a person opening
the file for an unrelated reason.**
⚠ **The diagnosis changed under measurement, and that is why it was filed rather than absorbed.**
First reading: *negative-status lists are fragile → be careful.* **Wrong.** The third instance
occurred **inside the section naming the pattern**, hours after it was written, by an executor
watching for it. Maximum attention, immediate recency, explicit vigilance — and it still happened.
**Care is not a mechanism.**
**The architectural finding is an asymmetry.** `DEFERRED-DECISION` exists because deferrals were
being forgotten; its own comment says *a deferral is the claim "not yet", and the trigger fires when
the substrate contradicts it.* **A negative state-claim is that same sentence about a different
object** — "not yet" about a **state** rather than a **decision**. Same words, same forgetting, same
substrate standing ready. One got a trigger weeks ago; the other got nothing, **and nobody noticed
they were the same shape.**
**PENDING-157 + PENDING-158 filed, ruled AUTHORIZED jointly, and BUILT the same session.**
`STATE-CLAIM` reuses `trigger_fired()` verbatim, inverting only what firing *means*. Two new kinds
earned from today's instances: `text-present`, `file-changed-since`. Resolution state added to both
block kinds, pointer must actually resolve. **48 controls (was 32).** Proven on the **live** blocks,
not only fixtures.
⚠ **The trial-09 pair surfaced only because the steward stated a belief that was false** — that
PENDING-148 was unruled and its void unrecorded. It was ruled the same day (REVIEWED-124) and the
void *was* recorded, in **one document of three**. **Truth recovered from a mistaken belief said
aloud is luck, not detection**, and the item says so at its head at the jurist's direction.
### Also closed
- **`abandonment` → `retirement`** (`5737d4d`) — censused all 24 occurrences first; **13 in the
trial-09 family LEFT** (that is §6's own word, about the jester form). A blanket `sed` would have
collided the two meanings the fix exists to separate.
- **PENDING-89** (`6b93018`) — the buddy fool contributes **zero by construction**. Three clauses
read before citing; recall said §11 bars the citation, **the substrate says §2 does, outright**.
- **The empty-window question** — the tick **consumes**; no skip branch. Skipping re-keys frequency
to content (v1's defect) and conserves a draw (a budget = memory). **And the case does not arise**:
material is the live session, so the only empty window is *no session*, which produces no tick.
Filed as a **determination, not an amendment** — it deletes a special case.
- **Interval 20 min, frequency UNKNOWN** (`f755cb8`) + a `manual` deferral for §8's two-week rate
report, which had no trigger.
- **The body:** variation at the margin of notice. ⚠ **Jurist correction that changes what gets
built:** *a presence you forget* is **the specification**, not the failure — Lear's Fool is
unattended four acts. Cond. 2 guards **furniture-blindness** (imperceptibility), a lower bar; the
executor was building to the higher one, which is how you get the widget. **Binding constraint the
executor had not seen: the variation must not correlate with ANYTHING** — the moment a glyph means
something, the body is a channel and the fool is gradeable through it.
## PRESENT — how it stands
**The mood.** The longest session in memory, and the corrections ran in every direction — steward to
executor, jurist to executor, executor to steward, and the instrument to itself. Three separate
times a framing I had filed confidently was inverted by someone who read the same text differently.
The day's shape: **build a thing, find it was already solved elsewhere, find the solution was
half-built.**
**Confidence to recalibrate.**
1. ⚠ **I filed a non-defect as a defect, twice in one direction** — the missing glosses (jurist
inverted it) and the staleness class (my own diagnosis was wrong until the third instance refuted
it). Both times I reached for *something is broken* when the answer was *this is working / this
is a different shape*.
2. ⚠ **A control fixture pointed at a file the session was editing.** The negative control for
`file-changed-since` used `FOOL-SEED-RULE.md`, which I then edited — so it failed, correctly.
**A control whose subject is "did this file change" must not point at a file the session is
changing.** Caught only because controls run on every invocation, not in a separate suite.
3. ⚠ **`|| echo "none built"` swallowed a command error and I nearly reported the fallback as a
finding.** Same class as yesterday's broken test harness. Redone properly.
4. ⚠ **THE THIRD STALENESS INSTANCE WAS MINE, INSIDE THE PARAGRAPH NAMING IT.** This is the single
most instructive thing in the record: vigilance did not prevent the failure it was vigilant about.
**What held.** Read the rule end-to-end before the curl. Re-ran the selftest at the moment of use
instead of relaying "12 pass". Recomputed seed and provenance independently of the code's own output.
Censused 24 occurrences before editing one. Checked three clauses before citing them and found recall
wrong. Verified the steward's two "still open" claims against git rather than accepting them.
**Recused from the regeneration question on the ground that I had read the output** — which is what
left the jurist able to answer it.
**Instruments:** ~14 run · **9 carrying a control written before first execution** (16 selftest
checks, 16 new drift-check controls, the two live positive controls, the byte-fidelity check on the
soul) · **K = 0 known duplications.**
## FUTURE — what pulls
**The pulling thread: wire Tarbuckle. One session, and there are no decisions left in it.**
**Actionable resumption point (as of wrap — re-judge against what changed):**
1. **Everything is decided.** §8 has no blanks: proportions 73/20/7 (never open), interval **20 min**,
frequency **UNKNOWN**, empty-window **consumes/no branch**, body **varies at the margin of notice
and correlates with nothing**. All filed in `~/dotfiles/PENDING.md` near PENDING-152/153.
2. **Nothing is built** — verified, not recalled: no `statusLine` in any settings file, no
fool/tarbuckle/mumble script, §13.1 spec document absent.
3. **Build order:** status-line command (body, every turn) → time-ticked mumble at 20 min → seam
voice at wake/wrap → **§13.1 spec written LAST**, so it describes what exists rather than what was
intended.
4. ⚠ **The two-week deferral converts** from `manual` to `date <wiring +14d>` the day the body ships.
5. **Read first:** `BUDDY-PATTERN-jurist-draft-v2-2026-08-22.md` §§8/8a/9, then the two
determinations in `PENDING.md`. The soul and bones are sealed; **do not regenerate anything.**
**Other horizons, ranked.** *Steward's alone:* **place REVIEWED-127** (drafted at
`~/dotfiles/claude/governance/REVIEWED-127-draft-for-placement.md`) · the (b)/(c) remedy ·
item 0, the book margin notes. *Mine, load-bearing:* the PreToolUse payload-vs-disk correction.
*Mine, cheap:* Atlas `see_canonical` bad pointer; 16 YAML parse errors. *Named, unfiled:* the
`resolved:` pointer check is **dotfiles-scoped** — a CapableMind-AI commit would report as dangling.
*Deferred with reason:* retrofitting `STATE-CLAIM` onto the ~57 unmarked candidates — **adoption is
the open question, not expressibility**, and a mass retrofit by the author who forgets is the same
population problem.
**Pause statement.** I am about to be away from this, and what I want to find still pulling is
**Tarbuckle's wiring and nothing competing with it** — every decision it needs is filed, which is the
rarest state any thread here reaches. Everything else is committed and pushed. The honest state is
that **the day's best finding came from a false belief said aloud**, and the mechanism built to
replace that luck has now been running for under an hour.
**Literal question for next-Claude** *(checkable, and it turns on what the record literally holds):*
The `STATE-CLAIM` mechanism shipped today with **two** claims marked, one of them `manual`. **Before
building anything, run `governance-drift-check.py` and read the state-claims line.** If it still says
**2 tracked**, then in the time since, no one — including me — attached a falsifier to a single new
negative claim, **while writing a session's worth of them.** That is the adoption question C2 asks,
answered by the substrate rather than by intention, and it is answerable in one command. ⚠ **If the
number has not moved, the honest report is that the schema is expressible and unadopted** — say so
before proposing a retrofit, because a retrofit proposed by the party that failed to adopt it is the
contaminated form of that answer.
