The REAL stale flags were elsewhere — caught only by censusing live state, not by trusting the remembered frame. Drift pattern reasoning-from-remembered-model confirmed in the resumption note itself; verify-against-live caught it.

## Confidence to recalibrate

- 2026-06-10 — **Read-render-favorably drift (steward caught).** First Codex PDF set the WHOLE body in small caps (mainfont name-resolved to EBGaramondSC.otf in luaotfload). I viewed the SC title page and read it APPROVINGLY ("EB Garamond small caps") instead of asking why body text was caps — a §I.i violation in plain sight. Same family as causal-story/read-render-favorably: wanting the artifact good, I read the render to confirm rather than to test against the spec. Fix: explicit roman font files; verify a body page reads as roman lowercase, not "looks nice." Verify renders AGAINST THE SPEC, not for approval.

## Spec-internal consistency audit (post-Stage-G, steward-authorized) — DONE
|
||
- 6-agent read-only fan-out over all 8 Codex files vs post-Stage-G canon (the spec↔spec coherence pass never run before Stage G). Findings reconciled in commit `e99028e`:

- **Measure (38rem→27.2rem)** un-propagated to companions — FIXED in silence-and-rhythm (incl. grid math 54→43.2rem, 66→55.2rem; column widths verified vs code), apparatus, vignette (4×), _sidenotes.scss comments.
|
||
- **Silver ratio** (38:54≈1:√2) was post-hoc — at 27.2rem it's ≈0.63, no longer 1:√2. Steward ruling: RETIRED from screen grid → "emergent proportion" note; relocated to print companion (silver ratio is a PAPER proportion). Insight: the eye/character-count govern, not a ratio (τὸ πρόσφορον).

- Status remnants: multilingual v0.5→v1.0 (charter ×5 + registry); content-typology AUTHORED→OPERATIVE leftover; §VII pointer list completed; CLAUDE.md essay-versioning DRAFT→OPERATIVE + vignette build-time note.

## Sub-agent dialogues
|
||
- 2026-06-10 — 6 general-purpose agents (per-file spec consistency audit). Each given the canon + Symmetria epistemic preamble; returned structured findings + confidence + couldn't-verify. Independent value: caught the measure-propagation gap (the big one) + the silver-ratio doctrine consequence (flagged not resolved) + the v0.5/AUTHORED remnants. False-positive discipline held (historical/example mentions correctly excluded). The silence-and-rhythm agent correctly refused to assume the other column widths — I verified them against code before recomputing.

## PDF embodiment + Phase-2 print-spec parked
|
||
- **Final Codex PDF `18cc59c`** embodies its own spec (the container obeys the contained): ragged-right (§I.i), banish-bold→italic + non-bold Medium/Regular headings (§I.d), old-style figures (§I.b), blockquote boundary-marks dropped (§I.h), body-colour italic margin notes (§VII.e), roman, British, reconciled. **sha256 c78817d…313c** — the bytes to sign (supersedes all earlier shas). Built via build-only lualatex pipeline (preamble + faithful.lua filter); microtype disabled (conflicts with newunicodechar).

- **DISCOVERED: `tools/latex/arc-typography.sty` (v0.2, 2026-05-14) is the GOVERNED PDF/print substrate** — already encodes oldstyle figures, banish-bold, no-numbering, blockquote-indent, apparatus, cream paper (#F5F0E8) + Plex Mono apparatus register. I'd been reinventing it. But it's STALE vs current spec (justifies not ragged; Regular not Medium headings; template carries 38rem; predates British/soft-rag/justification-Phase-2). Steward: "update it to the spec as it stands now."

- **PHASE-2 PRINT/PDF-SPEC SESSION (parked, scoped):** update arc-typography.sty + template-pdf-posture.tex to current doctrine — posture-aware ragged(PDF)/justified(print KP); Medium headings in-package (§I.d); 27.2rem measure-geometry recompute; British quote-normalization decision (the examples-vs-prose problem); xelatex+ucharclasses glyph routing (avoid the microtype↔newunicodechar conflict that blocks the Codex build on it); version bump v0.3 + provenance. Governs ALL future ARC PDFs. This is the spec's own deferred "Print stylesheet and PDF spec" (Postures L83). Do once, correctly — NOT tonight.

- **Loop named (steward accepted):** the evening's PDF-perfection was the perfectionism loop the Jurist warned of / steward named as his danger. Held the line: faithful artifact sealed; toolchain-perfection → Phase-2; essay next.
