The ~/.claude/ directory was previously local-only — a machine wipe
would have lost the accumulated memory, custom skills, and settings.
This commit moves the durable parts into dotfiles with the same
symlink-to-home pattern used for CLAUDE.md, PENDING.md, REVIEWED.md,
and L2-BOOTSTRAP.md.
Preserved (symlinked from ~/.claude/* into here):
skills/audit/ — thinking-folder drift scanner
skills/symmetria/ — practice-of-return discipline
skills/vault-update-people/ — Obsidian People-file maintainer
skills/wake-up/ — session restoration
skills/wrap-up/ — session state capture
memory/ — 55+ memory files (MEMORY.md, sessions,
ledgers, project state, feedback, etc.)
settings/settings.json — user preferences (hooks, flags, no secrets)
Deliberately NOT backed up:
settings.local.json — contains operational secrets (HF_TOKEN,
SSH password in expect scripts); by naming
convention, *.local.* is not synced.
Needs separate review and probable rotation.
sessions/, history.jsonl, caches, telemetry — ephemeral
plugins/, marketplace skills and agents — reinstallable
The working copies at ~/.claude/skills/* and
~/.claude/projects/-Users-davidglidden/memory are symlinks into this
directory, so every write flows here automatically. install.sh
recreates the symlinks on a fresh machine.
FOLLOW-ON (flagged, not in this commit):
settings.local.json contains a HuggingFace token and an SSH password
as plaintext strings inside allowed Bash command patterns. These
should be rotated and moved to secure storage (keychain / pass /
env file outside the settings file).

## The Observer Problem — Current State (2026-04-10)
|
|
|
|
**OP-01 (Extraction):** CLOSED. 13 extraction notes complete, jurist review passed.
|
|
- Steward attestation on OP-EX-T1-01 §2B (Visuddhimagga ten imperfections — structural translation warranted)
|
|
- Cavell elevated from Tier 2 to structural peer of organizing axis (Failure Mode B)
|
|
- Dunning-Kruger framing corrected: "metacognitive circularity" not "earned dogmatism"
|
|
|
|
**OP-02 (Cross-Strand Synthesis):** AUTHORIZED (2026-04-07). Three cross-strand findings:
|
|
1. **Competence-vulnerability paradox** — Visuddhimagga, Tetlock, Dunning-Kruger, Bourdieu converge: competence itself produces the most dangerous observer failure
|
|
2. **Failure Mode B may be more fundamental than A** — the gap between knowing and acknowledging (Cavell) is not addressable by mechanisms that provide information
|
|
3. **Mechanism/disposition gap** — mechanisms create conditions; they cannot produce the sufficient condition (tension held open per CD-03)
|
|
|
|
**Five architectural fault lines named:**
|
|
1. PENDING/REVIEWED pipeline has no check on the checker (B, A)
|
|
2. Invariant registry may function as Peirce's fourth barrier (A, C)
|
|
3. Observer Problem inquiry examines steward with steward's own tools (C)
|
|
4. CD-03 may be beautiful language rather than actual correctability (B)
|
|
5. Three-party model's epistemic diversity unproven between reviews (A, C)
|
|
|
|
**CD-03:** Constitutional Declaration authorized and operative. Reorients architecture from infrastructure-toward-solution to infrastructure-toward-honest-inheritance.
|
|
|
|
**External Auditor Review (2026-04-08):**
|
|
Five challenges raised. Jurist assessed three as landing:
|
|
1. **"Proceed with Annotations"** — if every governance interaction ends with the steward proceeding (with better documentation), the architecture is indistinguishable from its absence. To be answered through dialogue trial with override-recording mechanism.
|
|
2. **Absorption Trap** — the system pre-categorizes every critique into its own failure mode taxonomy, neutralizing external input. Confirmed by the system's own behavior during review.
|
|
3. **Aesthetic of Rigor** — unnamed failure mode. The felt experience of exhaustive process substitutes for verification that it produces valid outputs. Difficulty mistaken for calibration. Deliberately NOT added to failure mode registry (adding it would enact the pattern).
|
|
|
|
**Meta-governance decision:** The review is NOT taxonomized, NOT assigned a finding number, NOT domesticated into governance vocabulary. It remains present, referenced, and unresolved. This is itself a governance act.
|
|
|
|

**Next moves:**
|
|
- **Dialogue trial** — the minimum enforceable surface to answer "Proceed with Annotations." Override-recording mechanism that imposes friction cost on proceeding against jurist assessment.
|
|
- **ICP-19 remit expansion** — human-side governance questions still need explicit addition to reviewer remit (PENDING)
|
|
- **Fault Line 1 response** — steward decision still pending
|
|
- OP-03 (mechanism design) — blocked on ICP-19 remit expansion conversation
|
|
|
|

**Why:** The architecture addressed AI-side failure modes but not human-side. The External Auditor's review confirmed the risk is real and operative — the system's sophistication is itself a failure mode.
|
|
|
|
**How to apply:** All subsequent mechanism proposals must be assessed against CD-03 §IV.4 AND the Absorption Trap (does this proposal domesticate the critique it claims to address?). The dialogue trial is the next concrete deliverable.
