# Session 2026-06-11 — §VII.f running head shipped + the ARC open-work reckoning
|
||
|
||
Woke into the essay (06-10 thread); the day became §VII.f + an open-work reckoning. ARC `main @ b220620`, live, clean. Symmetria active all day (ledger `session-ledger-2026-06-11.md` — 9 returns, heavy).

## Past — what we did
|
||
|
||
### §VII.f Running Head — BUILT + SHIPPED (`b220620`, live)
|
||
The one spec'd-but-ready apparatus never shipped (verified unbuilt against code first). Built: zero-JS CSS `view-timeline` on `.post-title`, hoisted via `timeline-scope`, opacity across the `exit` range; per-type bound to `content-types.yml apparatus.running_head` (`loadRunningHeadClasses`/`showRunningHeadField`; yes=auto, conditional/per=per-piece override); progressive-enhancement `display:none` fallback (§III.b browser-floor answered). Files: new `_running-head.scss`, `post.html`, `site.hs` (`TypeFacts`+`ApparatusFacts`, threading through `postCtx`), `main.scss`. **Verified by headless-Chrome** throughout (opacity 0→1 at title exit; per-type presence; axis).

||
|
||
**Refined through a long sequence of steward render-rulings** (each measured, not theorized):
|
||
1. **Alignment** — band was viewport-centred; the breadcrumb/sequence-marker/body all sit on the *body-column axis* = viewport-centre − 2rem (the (sidenote 14rem − marker 10rem)/2 grid asymmetry, measured constant 598@1280 / 798@1680). Fix: measure-width band, centred for symmetric pieces, `translateX(−2rem)` for marginalia. Moved the marginalia grid tokens `_sidenotes`→`_variables` (byte-identical) so the band shares the grid geometry.

||
2. **The rule** — measure-wide with ends that dissolve over a soft tail (`$rh-fade` 4rem): the middle path between heavy full-width and rigid measure-stop.
|
||
3. **The ground** — separated from the rule: a *full-width* occluding layer (vertical fade) so the reading slips under across the whole width, while only the measure-wide rule reads as a line. Then anchored the dissolve BELOW the rule (`$rh-dissolve` 1.1rem via `padding-block-end`) so text is gone by the time it touches the rule, not colliding.

|
||
### W1.15 frontispiece compass — false premise surfaced, reframed
|
||
W1.15 ruled the compass reveal "same scroll-driven mechanism." **Surfaced (not papered): the frontispiece doesn't scroll** (`min-height:100vh`/`space-between`; measured scrollHeight==innerHeight). Steward reframed scroll→**presence-reveal**: zero-JS cursor-approach (graded invisible sibling-combinator bands; compass clarifies as the pointer descends — invite, not insist). Touch rests gently-present (accepted zero-JS limit; the phone accepts its limits — steward principle). Built in `_frontispiece.scss`.

||
### Spec reconciled + shipped
|
||
apparatus §VII.f (status→BUILT, convention table Background/Alignment trued, Implementation status), AldineXXI §2044 (scroll→presence reframe) + selector index, content-typology Sub-table-4. PENDING-39 appended; REVIEWED-43 placed by steward. Committed b220620, pushed both source remotes, `make rebuild` deployed (CloudFlare + mirror `d5e1e9eb`), **live-verified** on animalrationiscapax.org.

||
### The open-work reckoning (the deeper arc)
|
||
Steward corrected my "§VII.f = the *only/last* unbuilt element" — an overclaim (I'd verified §VII.f unbuilt but never censused the spec; hardened the steward's earlier framing into a claim with the contradicting `.colophon-page (planned)` line in my own edit view). Then: **what is the colophon?** — verified it's SHIPPED (rewritten 2026-05-09 "per §VII.g", live as an about-page; the `.colophon-page` index line is a phantom). **Third stale-index misread of the turn** (running-head entry, "only element", colophon). Root finding: **the AldineXXI selector index + the tracker + the "-pending" files have all DRIFTED; records ≠ code.**

|
||
Steward got (rightly) nervous → built **`project-arc-open-work-register.md`** = the single code-verified source of truth for OPEN ARC work, reconciling every surface against code. Annotated `project-arc-rework.md` (read-first banner + 06-08→06-11 compact catch-up — the tracker was true only through 06-07). Corrected MEMORY.md's stale "no build work pending" ARC tail. **Steward caught the cul-de-lampe** — the §IV Close ornament SVG asset, undesigned per spec §IV [OPEN 2026-05-03]; added as A2 (sibling to the vignette).

|
||
### "One more audit, then wrap" — register [VERIFY] flags resolved
|
||
(Steward DENIED my AskUserQuestion menu — proceed with the obvious bounded one, don't re-ask.) Verified against code: **E3 404 → DONE** (predates §VII.h; built page conforms exactly), **E5 master-typographer → DONE/superseded** (deep-typographic-audit-2026-06-09), **E6 web-typography → DONE**. **B3 ornament migration → OPEN, sized: ~95 content files, ~150 `<div class="ornament …">` (completion ×51 = the cul-de-lampe's Close job, section ×50, …) — gated on A2.** Three stale files cleared to retire; the one real open item confirms A2 load-bearing.

|
||
## Present — mood / returns
|
||
- **THE lesson of the day: records drift BOTH ways.** Stale "pending" files describe DONE work (breadcrumb/mimesis/404/colophon/most-glimpses) while real work (vignette, cul-de-lampe, the 95-file ornament migration) sat unlisted. The steward's nervousness was the corrective; his two catches (colophon = done-mislabeled-pending; cul-de-lampe = open-mislabeled-done) each paid out.
|
||
- **My recurring drift, named: inherited-marker-read-as-current-state-without-verifying-against-code.** 3+ instances this turn (stale index entries). Strong recalibration: verify status against the substrate (code/live), never against a record — the exact discipline today's whole conversation enacted. I apologised for making the steward catch the same class twice.
|
||
- **Verify-by-measurement held strongly** on the build: every render-ruling grounded by headless-Chrome (alignment axis, reveal opacity, dissolve) — no theorizing. The one place I theorized layout I was corrected (and that's an old flag).
|
||
- **Governance held:** false premises surfaced not papered (W1.15; the "only element" overclaim); deploy held for explicit "let publish"; REVIEWED is the steward's file (I drafted, he placed).
|
||

## Future
|
||
|
||
### Pulling thread (singular) — SUPERSEDED late-session → **the Studium Engine**
|
||
Late in the session the steward opened the thread that now pulls: **the Studium Engine prototype — his urgent tool, on the Fable-5 window (until 2026-06-22).** The engine is the general BYO-corpus deep-research substrate, built by first **powering the Chamber** (his instance + the forcing function; Library → Chamber → Publication). We deliberately *completed the picture before touching the build*: the engine↔Chamber relationship; the MemPalace two-class failure taxonomy (integrity/corruption FATAL → killed by file-authoritative shape; density-dilution quality = Stage-2); **the design law "silence must carry a coverage warrant"** (silence-as-answer × the 73%-invisible failure — reliability is *constitutive* of the Chamber's honesty, not a feature); FTS-first (reading-indices = 70% of intelligence → may retire the whole HNSW class); the **Partner+Guardian-now / Professor-Emeritus-later** prototype boundary. Captured: **`~/_Dev/studium-engine/docs/the-chamber-and-the-engine-2026-06-11.md`** (the bridge doc; uncommitted, for steward review). The thread is now: **revisit the seed brief + the chavruta prototype plan AGAINST that picture, and plan the Stage-1 build** (Harrison · Alexander chavruta on *After the Reply* Essay I). *(ARC is settled/reactive; its open work — A1 Vignette, A2 cul-de-lampe — lives in `project-arc-open-work-register.md`, available but no longer the live thread. The 06-10 essay also waits.)*

### Actionable resumption point (as of wrap)
|
||
ARC done/clean (`b220620`, live). **The live work is the Studium Engine, on v5 (window to 2026-06-22).** First move next session: **read the bridge doc** `~/_Dev/studium-engine/docs/the-chamber-and-the-engine-2026-06-11.md`; then revisit `~/_Dev/studium-engine/docs/seed-brief.md` + `~/_Dev/CapableMind-AI/docs/thinking/David/chamber/chamber-chavruta-prototype-plan.md` against it; read the not-yet-read chamber docs (`chamber-from-simulation-to-source-aware.md`, `graduated-expertise-source-aware.md`); resolve **§10.3 (canonical source format — steward's call; executor read = B, MD+sidecar)** + confirm the governance/authorization state; produce the **Stage-1 build plan**. Non-negotiable: the prototype must *bake in the scaling defenses* (file-authoritative + disposable index; coverage-warranted silence; FTS-first) even at 2 voices — it proves the *fatal* failure class dead and instruments the *quality* class for Stage 2.

### ARC fallback (no longer the live thread)
|
||
If the steward turns back to ARC instead: read `project-arc-open-work-register.md`; the two real builds are **Vignette** (spec-ready) and **cul-de-lampe** (§IV Close ornament, design the SVG first → B3's 95-file migration). The 06-10 essay waits (hand source-spine first).

### Pause statement
|
||
I am about to be away from this. §VII.f is shipped and the register is built + verified — that chapter is closed; I don't expect it to pull on return. What I want to find still pulling is **the register as the live map, and one of the two undesigned assets (vignette / cul-de-lampe) being taken up** — or the steward having chosen the essay/be/L1 instead, in which case the register waits, intact and trustworthy.

**On v5 (window to 2026-06-22), with the complete picture (the bridge doc `the-chamber-and-the-engine-2026-06-11.md`): what is the Stage-1 build plan for the Studium Engine prototype that powers the Chamber — and is §10.3 (canonical source format, steward's call) settled so the ingestion contract / Cluster A can be pinned?** (Backgrounded ARC: which asset — Vignette or cul-de-lampe; the deferred essay; whether the six stale "pending" files were retired.)

## Decisions deferred (and why)

||
- **The essay** (06-10 pulling thread) — untouched today; the §VII.f pivot took the whole day. Waits, intact.

- **Full /spec-code-audit** — offered 3×; steward chose the bounded register-verification instead ("then wrap"). The rigorous spec↔code half remains available when wanted.
|
||
- **Retiring the stale pending files** — proposed, NOT done (steward's call to delete/archive his own memory files).
|
||
- **Conditional-types running-head default** — kept per-piece (spec-faithful: "lock at first instance"), not flipped to all-title-types-on.
|
||
- **arc-typography.sty / vignette / cul-de-lampe builds** — all named, none started (the register holds them).
