# Session 2026-07-20 — /jurist-package built · PENDING-67 + F2 ruled · v2.3.0 operative
|
||
|
||
A long, cohesive marathon. Woke on the 07-19-latenight thread ("build /jurist-package, then draft PENDING-67
|
||
as its first exercise"). By close, the entire one-door / per-tier-lanes / F2 / constitution arc had run from
|
||
skill-build to an OPERATIVE constitution: chamber `51ce3dd` → `33f795c` (many commits, both remotes);
|
||
engine untouched (`8324789`). The steward relayed four rulings across the session and ratified twice
|
||
(REVIEWED-67, REVIEWED-68).
|
||
|
||
## PAST — what happened + why
|
||
|
||
**1. `/jurist-package` skill BUILT** (`~/dotfiles/claude/skills/jurist-package/`, symlinked into `~/.claude/skills/`).
|
||
Grounded in the two proven exemplars (one-door + fidelity-@2 packages) read verbatim, NOT recall. Carries: the
|
||
self-containment law (jurist has no repo access), the GROUNDED-IN hook gate, the invariant skeleton (roles not
|
||
numbers), the consequence-trace-one-level-deeper discipline, the copy-paste-clean REVIEWED draft, path-verify;
|
||
absorbs `/spec-amendment` (supersession → the ladder). Placement: dotfiles canonical + symlink (the convention
|
||
every authored skill follows; spec-code-audit's double-copy drift NOT replicated).
|
||
|
||
**2. PENDING-67 package — the skill's first exercise → RULED (REVIEWED-67).** `docs/per-tier-conversion-lanes-JURIST-PACKAGE-2026-07-20.md`,
|
||
hook-passed, grounded in §V + §Governance + PENDING-56/REVIEWED-56 D1 + the pilot ruling §4 + report F3/F4/§9,
|
||
all verbatim. Design move: **no new constitutional text** (my lean) — §V already forbids the acts; the amendment
|
||
operationalizes. **The jurist SPLIT Q1 against the lean: III.1 eligibility rule IS constitutional** — §V forbids
|
||
the *acts* but is silent on *who must demonstrate compliance, when, by what evidence*, the gap PENDING-56 fell
|
||
through (A3 legibility). Q2 boundary by MECHANISM (Docling HTML backend); Q3 re-widening FIX conditioned on the
|
||
census SPECIFIED; Q4 general, gating adoption-not-use; **Q5 DISCHARGED by a performed graduation-record check =
|
||
verified-zero** (git --diff-filter=A window = only 11 Loeb DSL; corpus-wide converted_with docling = 1 file
|
||
[Bringhurst PDF]; EPUB-via-Docling = none; 0 window re-conversions) → purely forward-looking, no live breach.
|
||

||
|
||
**3. F2 — diagnose-before-fixing OVERTURNED the finding's premise.** Asked to "do F2" (the recognizer extension).
|
||
Diagnosis (ran the ACTUAL injector, which the pilot never did): Eichmann has ~10 real footnotes not 2,180; the
|
||
injector **pairs all 10** and pandoc emits 10 native `[^N]`. The pilot's "0 reciprocity" was `audit_footnotes`'
|
||
HEURISTIC under-count (the tool self-flags it) — inherited into the jurist ruling as "the recognizer's predicate
|
||
doesn't reach it." Contamination shape exactly. NOT built — surfaced as [challenge-the-framing]. Widened to all
|
||
48 (steward-directed): 29 no-reciprocal-footnote · 10 pairs-all (blocker = the injector's verify-guard balking at
|
||
a BENIGN +1/-5 delta) · 6 partial-gap (Montaigne 876 = Word `_ednref` endnotes, a different family) · 3 no-source.
|
||
Relay: `docs/f2-recognizer-premise-correction-FOR-JURIST-2026-07-20.md`; census `_curation/kindle-footnote-injector-diagnosis-2026-07-20.tsv`;
|
||
tool-log entry (audit_footnotes PASS-BUT-FALSELY). **F2 RULED:** §5 premise withdrawn; Q2 SPLITS (de-glued number
|
||
= provisional FIX; URL-fragment exclusion = a PRINCIPLED markup-token class rule, never a per-file allow-list);
|
||
Q3 ordered pipeline in declared data + correct PENDING-67's III.2 before it lands; Q4 verify-guard first,
|
||
conditioned on proving at HIGH pair-count (Zibaldone 3,797, not n=10); **datum-not-ledger GRADUATES to constitutional**.
|
||
Two §3 diagnostic-correctness catches resolved: Montaigne = reciprocal (my census right; 07-11 was a different
|
||
edition); the 29-bucket relabel VALIDATED (Taruskin ~50,100 refs / Russell 4,082 / Don-Quixote 1,146 are
|
||
ONE-DIRECTIONAL, not residue-free) — my marker-shape discriminator itself undercounted span-wrapped markers
|
||
(census-through-a-pattern, caught again).
|
||
|
||
**4. v2.3.0 constitution fold — edit-set → placement ruling → CUT → OPERATIVE (REVIEWED-68).** Edit-set folding
|
||
three ruled designs (one-door operation + eligibility + datum-not-ledger). **Placement ruling: Parts B/E pass;
|
||
Part A four corrections; Part C → §VII (against my lean, Q-P3); Q-P4/P5 confirmed.** The important correction:
|
||
**the vacuity reversal** — my draft wrote "re-conversion is *not* vacuous," reversing the very Q2 finding it was
|
||
landing (a different sentence, the identical misreading, inside the subsection written to prevent it). Fixed:
|
||
"re-conversion IS vacuous — the candidate is the conversion — two obligations do the work." Also: converter-worse
|
||
extended to lexical content; **the curation-bearing second-pilot condition RESTORED** (it had vanished — the OQ-5
|
||
seam-loss, jurist-caught → declared data `promotion.scale_application`, status=owed); omnibus values out of
|
||
constitutional prose. **Cut with the bounded-diff discipline:** v2.2.0 frozen byte-identical (sha-verified); diff
|
||
= 8 removed (exactly the four intended edits) + 145 added; each subsection once; criterion body byte-preserved.
|
||
Declared data: the runbook ordered lane (whole-EPUB injection → per-spine) + scale_application. Ruling filed
|
||
verbatim; **steward ratified REVIEWED-68 → v2.3.0 OPERATIVE** (chamber CLAUDE.md pointer flipped, `33f795c`).
|
||
|
||
**Decisions NOT made (deliberate):** the verify-guard benign-delta fix (next session — test-first, prove at high
|
||
pair-count) · the Eichmann graduation leg (after the fix) · the Q2 markup-token exclusion class rule (its own
|
||
short jurist review) · the audit_footnotes caveat-on-output build · the marker-agnostic 29-bucket split · the
|
||
per-conversion typography gate (the jurist's forward item, a future PROPOSAL) · the Levi curation-bearing second
|
||
pilot (scale_application owed) · housekeeping (ladder batch + register compaction; /model-handoff).
|
||
|
||
## PRESENT — the mood
|
||
|
||
The session's shape was governed relay: draft → jurist rules → apply → ratify, four times, closing an arc that
|
||
began 2026-07-19. The instruments fired well — diagnose-before-fixing turned "do F2" into a premise-overturning
|
||
[challenge-the-framing]; the checkable-claim discipline turned Q5's "asserted-zero" into "verified-zero" and
|
||
resolved the Montaigne/Taruskin catches against bytes; the bounded-diff proof made the constitutional cut safe.
|
||
**The recalibration to hold: TWICE this arc the jurist caught my Part-A framing at the consequence-trace-one-level-
|
||
shallow depth** — I transcribe a ruling's WORDS faithfully but can invert its INFERENCE (Q1 "no new constitutional
|
||
text" missed §V's silence-as-gap; the vacuity reversal restated the error it was landing). When turning a ruled
|
||
finding into prose, trace the inference direction, not just the words. The other pattern worth naming: the
|
||
census-through-a-pattern trap recurred INSIDE the very diagnosis that was correcting a heuristic (my marker-shape
|
||
regex undercounted Taruskin) — a heuristic used to correct a heuristic still needs the substrate check.
|
||
|
||
## FUTURE — what is pulling
|
||
|
||
**PULLING THREAD (singular): the verify-guard benign-delta fix — F2's real fix — test-first, red-witnessed, proven
|
||
at HIGH pair-count (Zibaldone 3,797 per the jurist's Q4 condition), then walk Eichmann through the now-ruled
|
||
ordered born-digital lane toward graduation.** This turns the whole arc's constitutional work into an actual
|
||
verified Making source. The fix: teach `inject_epub_footnotes`'s end-to-end verify to accept the two benign
|
||
conversion artifacts (a de-glued footnote number; a vanished cross-file link-target) as convertible, NOT prose
|
||
loss — the de-glued number as a straightforward provisional FIX, the URL-fragment exclusion as a PRINCIPLED
|
||
markup-token class rule (never a per-file allow-list — the jurist's Q2 costliest point).
|
||
|
||
**ACTIONABLE RESUMPTION POINT (as of wrap — re-judge against what changed):** chamber `33f795c` clean, both
|
||
remotes; v2.3.0 OPERATIVE (REVIEWED-68 placed `~/REVIEWED.md:646`); engine `8324789`; dotfiles pushed. First
|
||
moves: **(1)** design the markup-token exclusion class (the literal question below) — read `inject_epub_footnotes`'s
|
||
end-to-end verify + the `converted_markers` allow-list mechanism (the de-glued case is nearly there); **(2)** test
|
||
first, red-witnessed, on Eichmann (the +1/-5 delta) AND on a high-pair-count file (Zibaldone 3,797) — the jurist's
|
||
condition that a benign-delta rule validated at n=10 may not hold at n=3,797; **(3)** then the Eichmann graduation
|
||
leg: convert via the ordered lane (whole-EPUB injection → per-spine pandoc → cleaners) → full gates → witness
|
||
comparison → graduate → retire witness → cross-repo re-anchor → begin closing the 48-file class. The pilot harness
|
||
+ census are in `_curation/eichmann-pilot-2026-07-19/` + `_curation/kindle-footnote-injector-diagnosis-2026-07-20.tsv`.
|
||

**PAUSE STATEMENT:** I am about to be away from this. Today the whole one-door arc reached an operative constitution
|
||
— the door is defined, the lane is ruled, the trust principle is in §VII. What I want to find still pulling on
|
||
return: **the verify-guard fix built and Eichmann walked through the door the arc opened — a Making source verified,
|
||
the telos made concrete in one file.**
|
||
|
||
**LITERAL QUESTION for next-Claude:** For the verify-guard benign-delta fix — is the "URL-fragment / link-target =
|
||
markup, not a body word" exclusion class determinable **purely from the injected EPUB's own markup** (the anchors
|
||
`inject_epub_footnotes` actually touched — it knows which hrefs it converted to noterefs and which note-body links
|
||
it relocated, so their rendered-as-text URL tokens are predictable), or does it require the **reference comparison**
|
||
to know a given token was a vanished link-target? Read the injector's `converted_markers` allow-list mechanism +
|
||
the end-to-end verify's word-multiset comparison FIRST — the honest answer may be "purely from the injector's own
|
||
touched-set" (which keeps it a converter-agnostic principled class, not an allow-list), and if so that IS the fix's
|
||
shape. 'Needs the reference' is an admissible answer that would make it a bigger design.
|
||
|
||
