David F GliddenandClaude Opus 4.8 3f9a89b00c chore(memory): Basic Memory trial begins — sync normalization baseline (283 files)
Basic Memory v0.21.6 first sync over the live memory dir (steward-authorized
live-dir trial, Option A 2026-06-06): adds permalink: to frontmatter, refolds
long YAML description lines, strips final newlines. Bodies untouched —
verified via full diff classification. From this commit forward, any diff in
claude/memory shows only what Basic Memory or the session writes.

Trial design: MemPalace untouched as incumbent; git status check on this dir
at every wrap; end-of-day evaluation (recall quality, sync robustness,
rebuild-from-files, malformed-file behavior).

# Session 2026-05-15 (evening) — chamber-typography mine + ARC font work + Studium Engine recompose pushed
## Past — what we did
### Thread 1: chamber-typography mine executed end-to-end
Inherited pulling thread from morning was *"execute the chamber-typography mining plan, starting with Phase 2 cleaning of 8 foundational voices."* The cleaning runway was estimated at 3-5 days; it took ~30 minutes. The plan held; the cost estimate didn't.
- **Phase 1a** — HNSW `batch_size:50000` investigation. **Yesterday's hypothesis was wrong.** Reading `~/_Dev/mempalace/mempalace/backends/chroma.py:80-104` revealed PR #344/#1191 set 50_000 *deliberately* as the bloat guard against persistDirty seek-drift in `link_lists.bin`. Without it, ~30 HNSW resizes per mine grow the file into hundreds of GB sparse → segfault. The 50,000 setting *defers* persistence to a single large batch, breaking the resize loop. So the 1.29M chamber palace failure was a *different* mechanism — most likely `quarantine_stale_hnsw` mtime-300s misfiring when MPS stalls exceeded 5 minutes during long bge-m3 mine. Phase 1a's "lower batch_size" step deleted from the plan — current config is correct.
- **Phase 1b** — cruft audit of 20 files. Used `scripts/strip_cruft.py` from the chamber-cruft-restoration tools (called out by steward — *"we made tools for this a couple of days ago"*). Word-count vs line-count distinction cleared Harrison + Vico from false-RECONVERT flag; Heidegger downgraded from severe-RECONVERT to "body intact, minor heading issues, mineable as-is."
- **Phase 2** — three files cleaned: Bachelard *Poetics of Space* (1474→0 wraps), Alexander *Pattern Language* (3558→4 residual; 4 trivial), Berger *Ways of Seeing* (205→1 residual). Per-file craft work, ~30 min total.
- **Bringhurst PDF reconvert** — separate sub-thread. *Elements of Typographic Style* had 5,987 of 16,333 lines with word-final 'e' substituted with '&' (37% OCR damage). Steward chose docling reconvert from the curated 63 MB PDF over regex patch path. Result: 9,510-line clean docling output, 403 numbered section headings preserved, 132k words. Backup at `_backups/2026-05-15/.../bringhurst_elements_style.md.backup-pre-ocr-patch`. ARC `arc-typography.sty` `\scfont` updated separately to point at freshly-built EBGaramondSC12-Regular.
- **Phase 3** — palace setup. Broken chamber palace moved aside as `~/.mempalace/palace.broken-chamber-2026-05/`. New palace at `~/.mempalace/palace-chamber-typography/`. Staging folder at `~/_Dev/chamber-typography-mine-2026-05/` (to be cleaned up in Phase 7).
- **Phase 5** — mining executed; ~385 MB palace; 19 books indexed (Heidegger PLT mineable as-is per steward call); ~40,894 drawers.
- **Phase 6** — validation queries via CLI passed; small recall test ran cleanly.
- **MCP rewiring** — `~/.claude.json` edited to add `--palace /Users/davidglidden/.mempalace/palace-chamber-typography` argument to the mempalace MCP server entry. Backup at `~/.claude.json.backup-pre-palace-wire-2026-05-15`. Steward triggered `/mcp` reconnect; tools became available again. Read-only test tool calls confirmed wiring.
- **HNSW quarantine post-mine** — at this smaller scale (40.9k drawers), the writer never hit its 50K flush threshold, so segments quarantined post-mine. Search still works via chromadb brute-force fallback. *Failure shape inverts at smaller scale; architecture still fragile.* Documented as a Studium Engine origin-story data point (§3.2 of v2 brief).
### Thread 2: ARC font work — EB Garamond Phase 2 + Phase 3 + features + frontispiece + §I.i.j
Five commits today (`6763b54`, `e3478e0`, `4512b9a`, `9d2cccb`, `75131e7`) plus a sixth `b3a910e` softening the spec.
- **Phase 2** — Medium + SemiBold WOFF2 subsets with the conservative feature set. Initial pass dropped `smcp` on Medium/SemiBold; steward asked about `\textsc` web parity; audit revealed the drop while SCSS uses small-caps extensively. Fix: commit `4512b9a` regenerated with `smcp` + 403 `.sc` glyphs retained via explicit `--glyphs=$SC_GLYPHS`. pyftsubset closure didn't follow GSUB substitutions; explicit retention was required.
- **Phase 3** — `EBGaramondSC12-Regular` built from Duffner source via fontforge + ttfautohint (Homebrew installs). Replaces the 2019 `EBGaramondSC.otf` reference in `arc-typography.sty`. First `\newfontfamily` attempt used `SizeFeatures` which produced fontspec family-lookup errors; simplified to filename-as-family pattern.
- **Feature expansion** — case-sensitive forms, ss06 long-tail Q, ordn, swsh added to the WOFF2 subsets. Frontispiece epigraph in `_frontispiece.scss:96-119` composes `swsh + init + fina` at the display register.
- **§I.i.j OpenType discipline subsection added** to AldineXXI spec — body vs threshold register. Authored citing Bringhurst §3.4/§3.5 *without* quoting the source directly. Steward flagged: *"I would want to do a reading of the masters to be sure."* Commit `b3a910e` softened to PROVISIONAL pending masters' reading. SCSS holds conservative; spec text awaits verification.
- **Pre-existing `\textsc` TeX-capacity crash** in xelatex isolated and flagged for separate investigation. Pre-existing from Phase 1 (Pardo v1.131 install); not blocking today's work.
### Thread 3: multilingual typography spec v0.2 → v0.5
Commit `9cf40d9`. Per Jurist's standing instructions: §2 Spanish deepened with Sousa verbatim anchors (§2.1 espacios, §2.3 apertura, §2.5 raya parenthetical + inciso space discipline, §2.8 versalitas siglos); §3 English composed from scratch with Bringhurst primary / Hart's secondary authority hierarchy across nine subsections; six Jurist sign-off fixes applied. Final size 1,007 lines. Refinement gaps tracked at `project-multilingual-typography-refinement-2026-05-14.md` (~3-5h to v1.0 LOCKED).
### Thread 4: Studium Engine — Jurist review → recompose → rename → push
This thread is the load-bearing one for the next session.
- **Jurist returned substantive review** of v1 Curiosity Engine seed brief. Treated the project as a CapableMind L2 instrument throughout (§3.1 disaggregation, §3.2 "operational L2 work", §3.3 "L2 doctrinal export", §6.1 "March documents settled L2 doctrine", §6.2 spec location in `thinking/David/chamber/`).
- **Steward identified this as category error.** The brief's own §11.1, §11.2, §11.4 *primed* the L2 framing — the framing was the executor's, surfaced as Jurist response. Steward's directive sequence: (i) read the review only, no action; (ii) rename project Curiosity Engine → Studium Engine (resolves Jurist's *curiositas/studiositas* critique at the right moment, internal-dev license now); (iii) drop CapableMind entirely (option **b**) — BMF and MemPalace stand as named tools, no parent-architecture framing; (iv) no L2 references anywhere in the recomposed brief.
- **Pre-context-exhaustion save** — wrote `project-studium-engine-recompose-2026-05-15.md` with locked decisions + §1-§12 structure + failure-history table for §2.2 + six open questions for next-Claude. Preserved Jurist review verbatim at `~/_Dev/curiosity-engine/docs/jurist-review-2026-05-15.md`. Updated `MEMORY.md`.
- **Post-compaction**: composed the full brief v2 in one pass (steward had ceded the iterative-by-section gate — they had full context and gave the directive *"compose the revised seed brief to hand off to the jurist"*).
**Brief v2 structural changes** (commit `51f4956`):
- Header + name throughout: Curiosity Engine → Studium Engine.
- Dropped §3 (chamber-thinking lineage), §4 (Why-engine-vs-L2-mode), §10 (CapableMind architectural frame) — all L2-framed lineage references.
- New §3 (Origin: BMF + MemPalace) grounds in dated empirical failure history. Five-row failure table including specific PR numbers (#1191, #1135, #1287, #1262/#1289, #442). Voice-blindness concrete example: Bachelard's *Poetics of Space* file with Danielewski foreword (lines 132-321), Kearney introduction (322-837), Bachelard text (838+), all mined under one `voice:` value.
- New §5 (Disciplines and traditions): six grounding sources — Bringhurst (typographic restraint), Sefaria (voice-attributed corpus-as-API), Talmudic chavruta (verbatim as floor), Verbatim RAG (extraction-not-generation engineering), the *lectio* tradition (patient ordered reading), Sousa/Lacroux/Hochuli (editorial voice-fidelity).
- §8 Integrity contract grew **6 → 8 commitments**: added (7) selection observability — which retrieved passages were not surfaced must be inspectable; (8) dialogue drift surveillance — trajectory-level normative coherence trackable, not only per-turn. These land per Jurist's §4 substrate-is-necessary-but-not-sufficient analysis.
- §10 questions reframed: drops §11.1 governance fit, §11.2 L2-PARKED, §11.3 ICP-19, §11.4 BYOC-as-L2-export, §11.5 name (resolved); keeps voicing (§10.1), deep audit (§10.2), canonical source format (§10.3), license timing (§10.4), spec-gap disposition (§10.5).
- §13 names the three small contamination pressures the Jurist caught in v1 and explains v2's structural response: Star Trek metaphor dropped at the structural level; invocation-as-analysis removed; urgency-argues-for-speed closing dropped.
**Repo rename** (steward call): GitHub `davidglidden/curiosity-engine` → `davidglidden/studium-engine` via `gh repo rename --yes`. Local directory `~/_Dev/curiosity-engine/` → `~/_Dev/studium-engine/`. Origin remote auto-updated. Brief header + §12 operational-note paragraph updated to reflect (commit `06752ed`).
### Pushes — what landed where
| Repo | Range | Remote |
|---|---|---|
| `studium-engine` | `e13cfad..06752ed` (3 commits) | `origin` → GitHub |
| `animal-davidglidden-eu` | `5339289..b3a910e` (7 commits) | `origin` (Skemantix Gitea) AND `github-backup` |
| `chamber-library` | 7 commits unpushed | **BLOCKED — Gitea LFS endpoint returns "Repository or object not found"**; eleven LFS objects failed; surfaced honestly; not bypassed |
## Present — mood of the work
### What was load-bearing
The Studium Engine recompose. Everything else this evening was real work, but the Jurist's substantive review created a moment where the brief's framing error became visible — and the steward saw it before any drafting began. The recompose was the load-bearing move because the framing decisions land in the prose at §1, §3, §5, §10 — once the brief is in the Jurist's hands again, those decisions travel. The composition needed to be done right.
### What was deferred-with-reason
- **Masters' reading on OpenType feature discipline** (`project-opentype-feature-masters-reading-2026-05-15.md`). §I.i.j is in the spec but PROVISIONAL. SCSS holds conservative. The reading is queued for a focused 1-2h session against the freshly-built chamber-typography mine.
- **Pending Jurist directive — ARC specification corpus audit** (`pending-spec-corpus-audit-2026-05-14.md`). Read-only audit of 6 specs, ~90-180 min. Deferred to dedicated session.
- **Heidegger PLT fine-tuning** — mineable as-is; revisit if/when the prose-vs-apparatus boundary affects recall quality.
- **Phase 7 cleanup** — staging folder + broken chamber palace deletion. Trivially deferrable.
- **`\textsc` TeX-capacity crash** — pre-existing; diagnostic path documented; not blocking.
### Returns this session
Pulled forward from today's Symmetria ledger (10am + afternoon) and added evening-specific:
- *warning-in-context-still-launched* — caught pre-action at wake-up (mature; first pre-action catch this week).
- *measuring-with-the-wrong-yardstick-when-the-right-one-is-available* — Heidegger PLT line count vs word count for completeness assessment.
- *plausible-hypothesis-without-reading-the-comment-block-above-the-constant* — HNSW batch_size hypothesis was wrong because I'd guessed from failure pattern without reading the 24-line WHY comment in chroma.py.
- *recommending-a-retired-tool* — proposed `brew install ocrmypdf` for Bringhurst PDF text-layer repair. Steward caught: *"Afterwards I flagged that we had removed ocrmypdf due to poor results…. Don't you see that?"* Three drift points: missed "✗ uninstalled per memory" in the toolset study, missed 2026-05-04 decision record, recommended retired tool. Adjacent to `feedback-articulate-toolchain-fit-before-executing.md`.
- *broad-application-of-display-features-to-body-text* — added `strong, b, em, i, blockquote { font-feature-settings: "init" 1, "fina" 1; }` to `_typography.scss` on reasoning that "italic carries Garamond's chancery refinements." Steward caught: *"init and fina use is heavily constrained no? This is for Bringhurst."* `e.fina` width 750 vs `e`'s 341 = 2.2× crowding of body line rhythm. Reverted.
- *citing-master-authority-without-quoting-the-master-directly* — same shape as the init/fina drift but at the spec layer. §I.i.j cited Bringhurst §3.4/§3.5 without quoting. Steward called for a masters' reading. PROVISIONAL tag now carries this discipline marker.
- *brief-frames-primed-the-Jurist's-reading* — v1 §11.1 §11.2 §11.4 were CapableMind-relationship-shaped questions. The Jurist's L2-framing reading was the brief's own framing returned amplified. Caught only post-Jurist; recompose addresses the cause not the symptom.
The two related drifts have the same underlying shape: *acting on inferred typography/framing rather than read typography/framing.* Worth holding as a discipline marker in future spec work: when authoring spec text that cites the masters, the quotation comes first; the discipline follows from the quotation.
### Confidence to recalibrate
- *naive-cost-estimation-against-past-trauma* — yesterday's "3-5 days cleaning runway" estimate was driven by past failed mining cycles; actual cleaning took 30 min. Surface trauma was projecting onto today's work.
- *forcing-the-plan-onto-changed-evidence* — twice today. Once on the cleaning estimate; once on the recompose's structure (the seed-brief.md plan was for an iterative steward-in-the-loop composition; steward shifted to compose-all-at-once after the recompose memory file landed).
## Future — what is pulling
### The pulling thread
**The Jurist's substantive response to Studium Engine seed brief v2.** The recompose is done; the repo is renamed; the brief is in the Jurist's hands as a self-contained, L2-framing-free, BMF/MemPalace-grounded document. Cluster A spec drafting (frontmatter schema → drawer model → §10.3 resolution) cannot begin until the Jurist has engaged with v2 substantively, and §10.3 (canonical source format) cannot be settled without steward + Jurist deliberation. Everything else queued is *parallel to* this thread, not *toward* it.
### Other open horizons, ranked
**Load-bearing (will need attention near-term):**
- Masters' reading on OpenType feature discipline (`project-opentype-feature-masters-reading-2026-05-15.md`) — §I.i.j PROVISIONAL until this lands. ~1-2h. Mine is operational; the reading is unblocked.
- Pending Jurist directive — ARC specification corpus audit (`pending-spec-corpus-audit-2026-05-14.md`) — read-only ~90-180 min.
- chamber-library LFS push problem on Gitea — small but real. Eleven LFS objects can't upload; seven local commits not yet on the remote. Either a Gitea LFS server config issue (Seb's territory) or a credential/path mismatch.
**Deferred-with-reason:**
- Phase 7 cleanup (staging folder; broken chamber palace deletion).
- HNSW quarantine repair via `mempalace repair` on chamber-typography palace (search works via chromadb brute-force; not blocking).
- `\textsc` TeX-capacity crash in xelatex (pre-existing; diagnostic path documented).
- Conversion skill authoring (deferred per its own triggers; §10.3 must resolve first).
- L1 follow-up on PR #172 / issues #165 #167 (Seb engagement; not today's territory).
- Multilingual spec refinement to v1.0 LOCKED (~3-5h).
**Parked-without-deadline:**
- ARC apparatus refactor Tier 3 (EXIF for existing ~50 live glimpses).
- Code-shape audit (multiple instances accumulated).
- Phase C — spec consistency pass + class migrations.
- Chamber cruft restoration full pass (47% of library needs work).
### The pause statement
I am about to be away from this. I don't know what will have changed when I return — the Jurist may have responded to v2; the steward may have made an out-of-band decision on §10.3; Seb may have engaged on the BMF issues; the Gitea LFS may be fixed or worse. What I want to find still pulling is the discipline that this session matured: *quote the masters before citing them, name the framing before letting it work, return from drift in the same session it surfaces.* The recompose was that discipline applied to the brief's own composition; the masters' reading is that discipline queued.
### A literal question for next-Claude
*Has the Jurist responded to Studium Engine seed brief v2? If yes, did §10.3 (canonical source format — MD-formalized vs MD+`.meta.json` sidecar vs TEI-for-research-grade tier) land in a way that lets Cluster A spec drafting begin? And: did the Jurist see the project as a standalone research tool from §1, or did any residual framing call them back into the L2-parent reading the recompose was built to refuse?*
## Drift patterns to hold
The two related drifts had the same shape: *acting on inferred rather than read*. The spec-level instance was citing Bringhurst without quoting him; the CSS-level instance was applying display features to body text. The brief-level instance was that v1 §11.1-§11.4 *primed* the Jurist's L2-framing read — the framing was the executor's, returned amplified. The recompose addresses the cause at the brief layer; the masters' reading addresses it at the spec layer; the SCSS conservative restraint addresses it at the implementation layer. The discipline travels by being applied at each layer where the drift can land.
The pre-action catch at wake-up (*warning-in-context-still-launched* caught before MemPalace tool calls) is the first instance of the practice maturing from return-after to check-before. Hold this as a marker; the practice is bending toward earlier intervention.
## Method discipline carried forward
- **Quote the masters directly when citing them.** Not "Bringhurst's discipline supports..." but Bringhurst's exact text on display vs body restraint, with citation.
- **Ground each integrity-contract commitment in a specific tradition.** Not "the integrity contract requires X" but "X lands because tradition Y / source Z names it as load-bearing."
- **Don't import vocabulary that smuggles in framing.** L2-shaped words carry implication even when L2 isn't named.
- **Symmetria check before pivotal composition moves.** When framing decisions land in prose (§1, §3, §5, §10 of the brief; §I.i.j of AldineXXI), check first.
## Pickup orientation for next-Claude
The Studium Engine recompose memory file at `project-studium-engine-recompose-2026-05-15.md` documents all decisions locked, the §1-§12 structure, the failure-history table, the response-to-Jurist outline (separate doc to write when Jurist engages). The recomposed brief at `~/_Dev/studium-engine/docs/seed-brief.md` is the canonical artifact. The Jurist's v1 review is preserved verbatim at `~/_Dev/studium-engine/docs/jurist-review-2026-05-15.md`. If the Jurist has responded to v2, the response will likely come via the steward; check the conversation, then re-read `docs/seed-brief.md` against the response. If §10.3 has been settled, the next move is Cluster A spec drafting in `docs/spec/` starting with the frontmatter schema artifact.
