# Session 2026-07-06 (evening) — Olson graduated; tool audit; A2 the last piece
|
||
|
||
Continuation of the pm structure-insertion checkpoint. Executed the whole graduation, then (steward-prompted) audited whether the day's tool-lessons were actually *integrated* vs merely *logged*. Graduation DONE; A2 is the one remaining piece, deliberately held for fresh attention.
|
||
|
||
## PAST — what we did + why
|
||
|
||
**The structure insertion was 4 problems, not the checkpoint's 2.** A census of all ~50 map-heads vs the body showed: (1) glued heads (OCR reflow ran head into following lowercase line); (2) repeated section titles needing occurrence indices (Olson runs parallel Cutter/Dewey sections + Conclusion ×3); (3) printed heads sit `blank/HEAD/body-prose` with NO blank below → `heading_block` (bounded-both-sides) stranded them via INSERT; (4) absent heads — 6 chapter titles + "Notes" dropped as running-head furniture, + the "bell hooks" §-head dropped. Surfaced the fuller picture + the one governed-tool fork to the steward (AskUserQuestion); **steward chose the explicit MODE column** over auto-detect (more faithful to generative-from-spec).

||
|
||
**`insert_chapter_headings.py` extended** (backward-compatible; 2/3-col + no-MODE rows unchanged): occurrence index (Nth-of-matches, fail-loud OOB, multi-match report); MODE column (auto|replace|insert); **`replace_extent` uses the declared TITLE as the extent oracle** (clean / wrapped-run / glued-split), case-insensitive (## body heads are ALL-CAPS, ### are title-case). Refactored into testable `build_plan`/`apply_plan`. **First test coverage this tool ever had** — +16 assertions, fleet **46→64/64**.

||
|
||
**KEY finding — the naive Phase-1 glue fix in normalize_ocr is WRONG (evidence, not intuition).** Tested it: `not is_runhead_candidate(out[-1])` over-blocks **288 lines** (~276 legit prose/quote first-lines incl. the Dewey reformed-spelling crown jewels), and the verbatim guard **PASSES both runs** (blocking a join drops no words → the word-level guard is structurally blind to a reflow-split = PASS-BUT-FALSELY). → glue resolved at insert-time (REPLACE splits head/body), never in normalize.

||
|
||
**Title-oracle over-extension caught in the real dry-run:** shape-based extent grabbed a short wrapped PROSE line ("The consistent marginalization…") into the 3rd CONCLUSION — a wrapped head-continuation and a short wrapped prose line are shape-identical. Fix: TITLE is the oracle. Pinned by a regression fixture.

||
|
||
**Blank-page scan-noise removed + logged.** 53 lines (book p.62 / PDF p.74 — *verified blank gray verso* by viewing the scan) that OCR hallucinated from speckle. The whole-file `ocr_damage` gate passed green over it (region-level PASS-BUT-FALSELY). Removed with a per-line gibberish guard (avg-token-length 3.0, max-consecutive-dict-words-per-line 3). **LCSH near-miss avoided again:** 7 of 8 flagged "gibberish" runs were CONTENT (BT/NT/RT/UF thesaurus codes + a German endnote) — census-then-inspect held.

||
|
||
**Graduated.** Frontmatter + title block (title-first, per verify_graduation) + `source_verified` (by: manual; title-page metadata + scan cross-check; source_file_sha256 `84843e63…`); source PDF archived to Chamber Sources + manifest entry; **both gates PASS**; **0 body words dropped** (before→after conservation, +39 = inserted chapter/Notes/bell-hooks titles + reconstructed book-title subtitles); graduated → `canonical_texts/traditions/critical_modernity/epistemology/the-power-to-name-olson.md` (4084 lines, 73 headings); catalogue rebuilt (1293 canonical).

||
|
||
**Tool-integration audit (steward "are we certain / least that does the most?").** RETRACTED the tool-evolution log's "git mv silently no-ops on untracked" claim — FALSE (the tool git-adds + rename-fallback + fails loud, fixed 2026-06-16); refuted 3 hypotheses for the one-off first-apply non-move empirically → logged as *mechanism-unknown, tool-correct*. For the one real gap (whole-file ocr_damage blind to localized garbage): **chose discipline over tool** — a windowed gate would cry wolf (dict dependency, fires on codes/tables/verse). Fixed it minimally: `graduation-spec.yaml integrity.localized_scan_noise` discipline (records WHY it's a discipline not a gate) + corrected the verify_conversion docstring that overclaimed "windows". Recorded the **`feedback-completion-is-a-tripwire`** memory (Ninety-Ninety Rule as a security property; the feeling of "done" is the cue to verify the tail).

|
||
## PRESENT — mood / disposition
|
||
|
||
A long, disciplined execution day with the returns landing on the *right* side repeatedly: challenged the checkpoint's framing (4 problems, not 2); measured before committing (the 288-line over-block test overturned the intuitive fix); caught the title-oracle over-extension in the dry-run, not after; avoided the LCSH near-miss again; verified the blank page against the scan before dropping. The load-bearing one: the steward's "are we certain?" caught a **misdiagnosed tool-defect in my own log** — a good reminder that the tool-evolution log is itself subject to the verify-before-asserting discipline. Then applied the steward's "least that does the most / don't bloat" filter honestly and *declined* to build the windowed gate. No new drift patterns; the discipline held under a very long session.

|
||
## FUTURE — what is pulling
|
||
|
||
**PULLING THREAD (singular): A2 (REVIEWED-49) — the reason the graduation was urgent.** Read Olson **Ch 6 "Toward Eccentric Techniques"** off the now-graduated text, cross-check the load-bearing quotes against the scan image, settle the jurist's question, and draft A2's preamble.

||
**ACTIONABLE RESUMPTION POINT (as of wrap — re-judge against what changed):**
|
||
- **The text:** `canonical_texts/traditions/critical_modernity/epistemology/the-power-to-name-olson.md`. Ch 6 = `# 6. Toward Eccentric Techniques` (~L3390) through the last section `## Proposing an Eccentric Technique` (~L3513); endnotes begin at `# Notes` (~L3558). - **The question to settle:** does Olson *license a declared personal partial scheme* (→ citation **(a)**: cite Berman + Olson each scoped) — or is "eccentric classification / eccentric technique" a subtler *decentering-within-the-institution* move (→ default **(b)**: Berman for the narrow claim, the personal-scheme licence marked as the Chamber's own synthesis, attributed to neither)? Provisional default until the reading settles it: **(b)**.

- **Then:** draft A2's preamble per REVIEWED-49 (A2 = perspectival-classification licence as *preamble/rationale, not an operative clause*; change-class FIX). ||
**PAUSE STATEMENT:** I am about to be away — the graduation (the precondition) is DONE and verified, and A2 is deliberately held so it gets fresh attention rather than the tail of a 6-hour build session. What I want to find still pulling on return: the discipline to *read Ch 6 closely and let the text settle (a)-vs-(b)*, not reach for the convenient answer — and to cross-check every cited quote against the scan image before it goes in the preamble. The temptation will be to confirm the provisional (b) without earning it from the reading.

|
||
**LITERAL QUESTION for next-Claude:** When Ch 6 is read closely — especially "Eccentric Classification", "Breaching The Limit", and "Proposing an Eccentric Technique" — does Olson actually *license the construction of a declared personal partial classification scheme* (making citation (a) correct), or does she stay within *decentering the institutional scheme from inside* (keeping default (b), with the stronger personal-scheme move being the Chamber's own synthesis)? And does any load-bearing quote shift when checked against the scan image vs the OCR text?
