Tested the question the wrap left, the same night. It is not answerable as posed, and the reason is the finding: the corpus is 244 Symmetria ledger entries, every one written by the executor about its own errors. Counting them is mechanical; the corpus is testimony. The question satisfies /wrap-up's prefer-the-checkable-form rule in letter and fails its purpose, and was posed while quoting that rule. Banked as feedback-checkable-question-over-self-authored-corpus, with the test to apply before leaving any question: who authored the corpus it reads, and would a different author have written it differently? What the record does support, on a narrower query that turns on what entries literally say: three events name a disclosed limit as the cause of a correction, and across all 244 entries none attributes a catch to difference of formation or bias. Constraint 6's mechanism is difference of bias; the record's is disclosure of scope. Suggestive at n=3. A secondary observable for input-dependence-01 follows from that — does the Fool's output ever bound its own coverage — and is recorded as OFFERED AND NOT TAKEN. It must go in before the jurist's gate or it is an observable chosen after seeing the run's shape, and editing a live artifact awaiting gate is the move this session spent the day refusing. MEMORY.md compaction history relocated to the reference layer; headroom restored from 296 to 941 bytes. # Session 2026-08-20 — the Fool was answering a different question
The day opened on a crash and closed on a reframe. In between, the primary substrate overruled
both AI parties on the same proposition, in opposite directions, on a question neither could have
settled by checking the other.
## PAST — what moved, and why
### The morning: reconstructing a session that never wrapped
The steward reported "clearly a crash overnight" — re-login prompt, empty terminal. The record says
something narrower and then something wider: the 2026-08-19 session died at 21:05 CEST with
`Request timed out` after a 513-second turn, and the host went down later (final transcript write
01:53, untimestamped metadata rows only — a flush-on-shutdown shape).
**Reconstructed from `0883c73d-…jsonl` rather than from MEMORY.md**, which predated it. Wrote three
things: the missing session record, a MEMORY.md Active Session correction naming the two workstreams
it had carried as *"not yet named"* for a day, and `project-obsidian-vault-practice.md` — a tracker
the vault work never had. Commit `4235430`; the untracked pass-2 artefacts landed in `f-` and both
remotes were pushed.
**Checked the steward's three broken links against git rather than inferring.** All pre-existing —
the coffee log's `brew_temp: [[94–96°C]]` dates to 2025-09-17, and pass 2 never touched the
homeopathy note. **But the passes are not innocent:** §7 flattened nested `links.parents` — inert
YAML Obsidian did not render — to top level, which made **194 already-unresolvable targets render as
clickable-and-broken**. Surfaced, not caused, and the pass report did not predict it. One genuine
defect of ours: `see_canonical: "[[Index]]"` resolves to the wrong note or none, 1 of the 3 §3
pointers.
### The afternoon: the Fool
**PENDING-148 filed** with a jurist package on trial 09's corpus leak. Before writing it, transcribed
the **trial 09 design** to disk — it existed only in a session transcript, the harness prunes at 30
days, and the session it arrived in had just died. A pre-registration that can expire is not one.
**The ruling (filed verbatim) went four ways and one of them overturned the executor's lean:**
- **Q1 — VOID, not degrade.** The executor argued to degrade because the §1 cross-tab is the novel
measurement and the leak does not touch it. The jurist's counter is better: *degrade keeps the
name*, and in six months what survives is *"trial 09 returned zero STRONG"* long after anyone
reads the addendum explaining STRONG was unreachable by construction.
- **Q2 — the executor's own finding (IV.c) confirmed as "the most valuable thing in the package"**,
but its remedy narrowed. §5 step 1 carries three duties with different dispositions; only the
interpretive marking drops. **The fuller self-removal was declined on the strength of the
executor's own disclosure** that reducing its role is the direction most flattering to it —
accepting it wholesale would honour the disclosure by ignoring what it warns about.
- **Q2 also inverted a cost into a benefit:** unmarked questions are **§1 compliance**, not merely
S-1 repair, because a marked set leaks to the steward what §1 requires him not to know when
rating discomfort. The package had this backwards.
- **Q4 — the jurist withdrew its own HOLD proposal of 2026-08-19**, marking the withdrawal.
### ⚠ Then OP-02 was opened, and it corrected both parties
The ruling closed by naming OP-02 *"the only document in this chain neither of us can open"* and
asking to be wrong about its FL5 reading. **It is on disk**, was located and hashed by the executor
on 2026-08-19, and reads byte-identical to the manifest's excluded-hash entry
(`4a38e549f1dbb0f4040369823a5f92172b35d43b79923f26e693e1f01fceb9b5`). Permissible to open because
the trial is void and STRONG is out of scope, so §5 step 4's ordering protects nothing.
**Fault Line 5 argues from Bourdieu's shared field and *illusio* — not from formation.** Its premises
are vocabulary and framing: relations of position, not origin. Habitus in Bourdieu is field-acquired.
Constraint 6 asserts *"the steward differs from both AI parties in formation"* and grades that the
strong form of independence — **an axis FL5 never uses.**
| reading | verdict |
|---|---|
| **Executor:** C6 states FL5 *"more sharply"* | ✗ different proposition, different mechanism |
| **Jurist:** C6 *"affirms the negation of"* FL5's three-party half | ✗ answering a different question is not negating |
Corpus check, all 11 documents: `bourdieu`/`habitus`/`illusio` **0** · `three hats` **0** · `peirce`
**0** · FL4's distinctive substance **0** · FL3's **1**. Against the pre-run census's 16 · 20 · 24.
**The census was counting topic-adjacency and over-reported the leak the executor's own
recommendation rested on.** The jurist had flagged it as unverified executor testimony and named it
in Q5 as what a contaminated reader is least positioned to settle. That flag paid off against the
executor.
### The evening: the re-aim
**The steward restated the original intent** — the Fool was trialled *"to see what value would be
added or subtracted by having a different model, and local on the M4, assume the role of the fool
within our tripartite governance structure."* **That is a deployment question. The log's stated
subject is the doctrine.** They are not the same, and almost the whole programme serves the second.
Three consequences: the capability confound (weaker vs differently-formed) is **fatal to the doctrine
question and irrelevant to seating a named candidate**; the narrowing is **non-transferable** (if
divergence is capability-driven, a better local model later yields *less* of the finding-class); and
**soundness is no longer required** — a differential criterion needs only that documents differ.
**The jurist's correction, adopted:** the add and the subtract may be **one mechanism, not two
columns**. A reader that pattern-matches surface structure without close reading produces both the
distinctive finding-class *and* the insensitivity. **So the executor's closing option — seat it for
the class, treat the noise as cost — is incoherent as posed**, and was withdrawn.
**`input-dependence-01-PREREGISTRATION.md` filed**, sha256
`d41e1d5754fd0eef994616a89a3b95296516a4819737cd4e8ebdd3ae6bbf47db`. Blind A/B arm-matching, N=5,
p ≤ 0.031 at all-correct. **Within-pair** matching because the Fool quotes text verbatim and a
cross-document matcher would succeed on topic alone. **Executor-authored injection is conservative
here**, unlike trial 04: an error in the base appears in both arms and can only reduce measured
tracking. Matcher is jurist or steward, never the executor.
**The steward fixed three dispositions before the run** and declined the executor's binary as having
no middle when the middle is likeliest — trial 04 already returned one (*"the output barely moved"*
is not zero tracking). And added **the harvest**, which the binary had no slot for: if the output
does not track input the Fool is producing a checklist, so extract it as a static artefact and the
programme closes with a deliverable rather than a null.
## PRESENT — how it stands
**The mood.** Unusually clean for a day with this many corrections in it. Nothing was lost to the
crash; every correction today was found rather than argued about; and the two AI parties corrected
each other in both directions without either digging in. The uncomfortable part is §3 below.
**Three repos are clean and pushed. Two were dirty before today and remain so** — CapableMind-AI's
six untracked files are **24 days unlanded**, including `governance-currency-JURIST-PACKAGE-2026-07-27.md`.
A jurist package untracked for three weeks is the same fragility fixed today on the trial-09 design.
Not touched, because it belongs to a different workstream and is the steward's call.
**Symmetria was not invoked this session.** No ledger for 2026-08-20. Recorded rather than
back-filled.
## What was corrected
1. **The executor's framing of the fork** (morning) — told the steward the choice was *court-as-it-is
vs redacted corpus*. Redaction had already been closed off in yesterday's addendum, which the
executor was citing at the time. **Composed from memory about a document in hand.**
2. **The parking list** — "the jester replacement run" names the run authorized by **Q1 of the
ruling**, not a programme item. Parking it would have disposed of a live authorization by side
effect. Withdrawn as written.
3. **Part IV.a's "more sharply" claim** — inherited from the pre-run addendum and propagated without
opening OP-02, **a file whose hash the same package quotes three sections earlier.**
4. **The add/subtract ledger** — replaced by the jurist's same-mechanism hypothesis.
5. **The jurist's Q3** — corrected by the substrate, not by the executor's reasoning.
6. **The jurist's "neither of us can open"** — false; it was openable.
⚠ **Items 1 and 3 are the same shape, and the jurist named it after item 1: "two is worth watching."
Item 3 is the third instance in three days, and it sits inside the document reporting the second.**
Propagation is the more dangerous form: an inherited claim arrives already looking checked.
## FUTURE — what pulls
**The pulling thread: close the Fool via the input-dependence arm.** Not the doctrine question, not
the fence, not the vault. The Fool is the piece the steward said must complete before the fence
resumes, and it is now one gate and two inputs away from being runnable.
**Actionable resumption point (as of wrap — re-judge against what changed):**
1. **The steward places REVIEWED-124** in `~/REVIEWED.md`. Drafted copy-paste-clean in the package's
Addendum. Trial 09's void currently lives in the fool tree and the trial log **but not in the
register**, and the jurist is right that a reframe over an unrecorded void is worse than no
reframe. ⚠ **Placing it makes PENDING-148 read CLOSED while the OP-02 question is live** — Class
E (PENDING-146) arriving in real time.
2. **The steward enters §5's testimony**, which reads `[ AWAITING — not yet given ]`. He is the only
party who has read all three outputs against the same documents. It must go in **before** the
run; recalled after a result is not testimony.
3. **The pre-registration goes to the jurist's gate.** ⚠ Residual coupling, named: the executor
authored the instrument whose result bears on its own recommendation. The design routes the
*matching* away from it, not the *design*. The gate is the only check on that.
**Other horizons, ranked.** Load-bearing: the fence (MOVE 2 / answer key / MOVE 1), still deferred
behind the Fool by the steward's own sequencing. Deferred-with-reason: the Obsidian capture — the
daily note must accrete *during* the session, since a wrap-triggered backup inherits the wrap's
failure mode, which is exactly what 2026-08-19 demonstrated. Parked: trials 05–08 and the Fool's
D-2 gate, **which have never existed as documents anywhere** — parking them abandons a numbering,
not work; the reduction arm; the vault link tail (194 + 63 + the `[[Index]]` defect).
**Pause statement.** I am about to be away from this. I do not know what will have changed — whether
REVIEWED-124 was placed, whether the jurist gated the pre-registration, whether the testimony went
in. What I want to find still pulling is the Fool, and specifically **the discipline that today's
three corrections all point at**: that a claim about a document is worth nothing until the document
is open. The Fool programme is a machine for asking what checkers add, and today the answer came
from neither checker.
**Literal question for next-Claude** *(checkable — the record answers it, not introspection)*:
Today the primary substrate corrected both AI parties on the same proposition, in opposite
directions, where checking each other had produced two confident wrong readings. **Across the last
~15 sessions, when a claim about a document turned out wrong, count how many were caught by a party
disagreeing versus by someone opening the document.** If it is mostly the latter, then the
differently-biased-checkers structure is doing less work than the plain ritual of substrate-checking
— and Constraint 6's falsifier, which watches whether the parties' *misses* correlate, may be aimed
at the wrong quantity entirely. That would be a finding about the doctrine that the Fool programme
was built to test and has not once produced.
---
## CODA — the open question was tested the same night, and it failed its own test
The steward asked, after the wrap: *can you answer the open question? Is it answerable?*
**Partly, and not in the form posed.** The corpus exists — 15 Symmetria ledgers in the window, 244
entries, **79 correction-shaped** — and the *who* is present in the prose (*"checked git"*, *"the
jurist ruled on my testimony"*, *"self-caught"*). Two things stop it answering:
1. **Machine extraction fails.** Keyword classification returned **34% unclassifiable**, and the
caught-by-a-party bucket filled with entries that merely *mention* the jurist or steward. A
number off that classifier would launder an interpretive judgement into a percentage.
2. ⚠ **The corpus is single-authored by the party being measured.** Every ledger entry was written
by the executor, about the executor's own errors. The counting step is mechanical; **the corpus
is testimony.** The question satisfies the letter of `/wrap-up`'s prefer-the-checkable-form rule
and none of its purpose — **it is self-report with extra steps**, and it was posed while quoting
the discipline it fails. Banked as
[[feedback-checkable-question-over-self-authored-corpus]].
### What the record does support — a different mechanism from the one the doctrine names
A narrower, less interpretive query — *does any entry name a **disclosed limit** as the cause of a
correction?* — turns on what entries literally say. Nine hits, most of them disclosure being
*practised* rather than catching anything. **The clean cases are one event (two entries) plus
today's — n = 3.**
> *"A disclosed scope-limit did the work no control did. The jurist could not verify ADDENDUM 1 and
> said so plainly instead of glossing. That sentence is the entire reason the count was corrected."*
> — ledger 2026-08-17
Today was the third: the jurist's Q5 flag on the Part II census as *unverified executor testimony*
is what made checking it the obvious next act — and the check found the census had over-reported in
the executor's own favour.
⚠ **Across all 244 entries, no entry attributes a catch to difference of formation or bias.** The
closest says *"differently-positioned readers paying out because the position was **stated**"* —
crediting the **disclosure**, not the position.
**Constraint 6's mechanism is difference of bias. The mechanism the record actually names is
disclosure of scope.** These are different, and the second requires no difference of formation at
all: a party identical to the executor, disclosing its gaps, would produce the same benefit. At
n = 3 this is suggestive, not established — but it is the only mechanism the record names in words.
### What it implies for the Fool, and the one decision left open
If disclosure-of-scope is what pays, a 35B model in the fool seat adds value only if it can **state
what it did not read**. Trial 04 points the other way: constant output across arms, 0 of 5 injected
defects, findings that quoted a defective sentence while naming something else. **A reader that
pattern-matches surface structure has no scope to disclose.**
⚠ **OPEN, AWAITING THE STEWARD — offered, not taken.** Add a **secondary observable** to
`input-dependence-01-PREREGISTRATION.md`: *does the Fool's output ever bound its own coverage?* It
costs nothing extra to record and it tests the mechanism the record actually names rather than the
one the doctrine assumes. **It must go in BEFORE the jurist's gate**, or it is an observable chosen
after seeing the shape of the run. The pre-registration was not edited — it is a live artifact
awaiting placement and gate, and adding to it unilaterally is exactly the move this session spent
the day refusing.
### The open question is replaced, not carried
The 08-20 question is retired as contaminated. **Its replacement is the query that actually ran:**
*how many corrections in the record name a **disclosed limit** as the cause?* — less interpretive,
answerable from what entries literally say, and it does not ask the executor to grade itself.
