Basic Memory v0.21.6 first sync over the live memory dir (steward-authorized live-dir trial, Option A 2026-06-06): adds permalink: to frontmatter, refolds long YAML description lines, strips final newlines. Bodies untouched — verified via full diff classification. From this commit forward, any diff in claude/memory shows only what Basic Memory or the session writes. Trial design: MemPalace untouched as incumbent; git status check on this dir at every wrap; end-of-day evaluation (recall quality, sync robustness, rebuild-from-files, malformed-file behavior). # Chamber-library humic-layer pillars — noticed in 2026-04-26 walk
|
||
|
||
> **Corrigendum (2026-04-26, after reading ARC's actual colophon):** the "newly visible pillars" framing below is partially wrong. **Bachelard, Berger, and Sennett are already Guides** named in `content/pages/colophon.md` with verbatim recognitions of what each gave. They were not newly visible — I had not checked the destination-artifact (the colophon) before characterizing the substrate. New drift-pattern logged: *characterizing-substrate-without-checking-artifact-being-reshaped*. The discovery DEEPENS their role (already-Guides whose chamber-library substrate is wider than the colophon shows) — it doesn't introduce them. Read the entries below with this correction in mind.

**Walk context:** Steward directed a chamber-library inventory before today's About-pages-restructure work, after correcting the catalogue-stale assumption. Walked `converted_texts/traditions/`, `converted_texts/collections/`, top-level `Jaccottet:Handke:Lichtenberg/`, `derrida/`, `observer-problem-sources/`. Three things mental-summary had been carrying as smaller than they are.

||
|
||
**Posture:** These are *noticed* in registrar form, not steward-recognized. The lex-method places recognition inside dialogue, not inside the registrar's walk. Hold these as material-on-the-table, not as cluster commitments.

## 1. Bachelard concentration in `phenomenology/`
|
||
|
||
Six works present:
|
||
- *La poétique de l'espace*
|
||
- *La poétique de la rêverie*
|
||
- *La dialectique de la durée*
|
||
- *L'air et les songes — essai sur l'imagination du mouvement*
|
||
- *La terre et les rêveries de la volonté — essai sur l'imagination de la matière 1948*

||
Why it might matter: Bachelard's matter-imagination cycle (earth, water, air, fire) is *literally* about the underground, the cellar, the rooted-house, the elemental dwelling. He is one of the few voices for whom *humic* would be a native register, not a metaphor extension. The framing "humic layer" the steward has been using may be less metaphor and more Bachelardian than I had been treating it.
|
||
|
||
Open question for dialogue: is Bachelard substrate for the *humic-layer framing itself* (i.e., one cluster up from any single content cluster), or substrate for one specific cluster (likely `practice-across-life` or `music-and-measure`)?

||

## 2. Berger as corpus-of-corpora
|
||
|
||
Approximately 13 Berger works distributed across:

||

Why it might matter: this is a body comparable to Norris-as-editorial-teacher in scope. Berger's whole register is the looking-and-being-looked-at, the witness-act, the apostrophic mode toward the photographed/painted/dying/labouring other. If the apostrophic cluster needs a pillar comparable to what Norris is for the editorial cluster, Berger is the candidate the library has already gathered.

||
Open question for dialogue: does Berger become the apostrophic-cluster pillar, or a humic-layer presence threading multiple clusters (visual register, witnessing register, dignity-of-labour register)?
|
||

## 3. `Jaccottet:Handke:Lichtenberg/` sits *outside* `converted_texts/`
|
||
|
||
Top-level folder, untracked in git, unsurveyed by any catalogue. Contents (`md/` subdirectory):
|
||
- **Lichtenberg** — *Gesammelte Werke* (the *Sudelbücher* / waste-books — foundational private-noting tradition, ~18th c.)
|
||
- **Handke** — *Am Felsfenster morgens*; *Die Geschichte des Bleistifts*; *Das Gewicht der Welt — ein Journal (Nov 1975 – März 1977)*; *Phantasien der Wiederholung*
|
||
- **Jaccottet** — *Carnets 1995–1998*; *Observations et autres notes anciennes 1947–1962*; *La semaison*; *La seconde semaison*

|
||
Why it might matter: this *is* the practice-across-life cluster's pillar substrate in its purest form — notebook-as-lifework, daily-noting practice, the *Semaison* genre as private-published. Three voices, three centuries (Lichtenberg ~18th, Jaccottet 20th–21st, Handke 20th–21st), one form. Some Jaccottet titles also exist in `literature/contemporary/` (likely different editions or partial coverage).

||
|
||
Architectural note: the placement *outside* `converted_texts/` may signal: (a) still being processed for catalogue-entry; (b) deliberately separate as a working sheaf rather than reference-collection; (c) deliberately separate because the practice-across-life cluster is itself in formation and the pillar is being held adjacent rather than filed. Worth a steward question — the placement is itself a signal I shouldn't read past.

||
Open question for dialogue: what is the placement saying? Should the folder be filed into `traditions/critical_modernity/phenomenology/` or `literature/contemporary/`, or does it stay top-level as a deliberate sheaf?
|
||
|
||

## What this is not
|
||
|
||
- Not a recognition. Recognition happens in dialogue per the lex-method.
|
||
- Not a cluster-assignment. The steward maps voices to clusters; my job here is registrar.
|
||
- Not exhaustive. The walk caught these three because they were under-weighted; other pillars (Levinas for apostrophic, Cage for music-and-measure / mark-not-made, Sennett for craft-and-tool-fitness, Weil's *La Personne et le sacré*, Mauss for gift/inheritance) were already in working memory.
|
||
- Not a snapshot of the whole library. For full inventory, walk the trees again — catalogues are stale (`feedback-catalogues-stale-walk-trees.md`). |
