# Session 2026-05-08 — AldineXXI spec-completion arc

A day that began as a single concrete diagnostic and opened, under steward redirection, into the spec's substantive completion. The chavruta-with-the-dead-and-unborn was operative throughout. Steward's framing of the work as "honour to the dead and contribution to the unborn" became load-bearing, eventually quoted directly in the spec via Harrison's *ligature* sentence.

## Past — what we did

### The arc, compressed

09:26 — `/wake-up` after ~13h pause. Inherited pulling thread: code-shape audit; first entry: mobile italic-grey diagnostic (`.fragment em` specific or corpus-wide `--gray`?).

10:30 — Diagnostic answered early: corpus-wide. The `--gray` channel itself fails WCAG AA (4.04:1 light, 4.43:1 dark), and §III.WCAG-compliance had never audited it. Surfaced the spec-gap that produced the experiential bug.

11:00 — **§VII.e *Apparatus Colour* drafted** — 5-master convergence (Bringhurst §3 + §1.2.3, Tschichold *Form of the Book*, Hochuli *Detail in Typography*, Müller-Brockmann §1458, Tufte boundary-case). Form differentiates apparatus, not luminance. `.whisper` retired; 11 selectors migrate to body colour. §III WCAG audit gained `--gray` FAIL row.

14:00 — **Session 2 (Rhythm/Grid/Proportion):**
- §II.b *Rhythm* — leading as the unit (initially as "8px-grid pragmatic compromise"; revised same day to *Two scales* per steward review).
- §II.c *Page Grid* — five-column grid lifted from §XII apparatus to page foundation; apparatus-mode 54rem / full-mode 66rem.
- §II.d *Page Proportion* — initially per-page-class rule (reading=asymmetric, catalogue=symmetric). REVISED 16:30 after second chavruta to per-piece content-driven. Manutius left the gloss behind; on screen, the empty asymmetric grid is the gloss-form rejected.

Plus reduced motion, higher contrast, touch targets, skip-link, semantic landmarks, image alt-text rule (current glimpse EXIF-as-alt is a violation), browser-support floor.

22:30 — **Marked 2 template generated** as SCSS-from-spec test (`docs/AldineXXI-Codex/marked2-template.css`). I produced the CSS file from the spec text alone, no reference to ARC's actual SCSS. Test passed: every value either stated explicitly or computable from a stated rule (heading sizes from §I.d 1.2 ratio; rhythm tokens from §II.b leading derivation; `--accent-soft` from §VII.c 70%-mix). One small gap surfaced: spec states heading-scale ratio (1.2) but doesn't tabulate resulting rem values — Token Index audit candidate.

### Decisions made (canonical, with reasoning)

- **§VII.e Apparatus Colour** — luminance retired; form (typeface, scale, italic, position, letter-spacing/small-caps) is sufficient. *Why*: 5-master convergence; WCAG floor failure of `--gray`.
- **§II.b Two scales** — reading-rhythm (leading-derived) + layout-grid (8px). *Why*: cleaner than "compromise" framing; each scale serves its scope honestly. (Steward rejected pragmatic-compromise framing explicitly.)
- **§II.d Per-piece content-driven composition** — supersedes initial per-page-class rule. *Why*: second chavruta on "what would Manutius do with the web?" — Aldus left the medieval gloss behind; the empty asymmetric grid is the gloss-form rejected.
- **§I.h Block Quote: indent-only, body colour** — three exclusions principled (no forced italic, no left-bar, no luminance). *Why*: Bringhurst §4.4 + §3.5.2; the bar is Markdown-default not typographic tradition.
- **§I.h Pattern B attribution: EB Garamond small-caps** — REVISED from initial Plex Mono after the masters' reread. *Why*: end-of-quote attribution belongs to reading register, not apparatus; matches §VII Epigraph and current essay practice.
- **§III.b percentage-root** — replaces hardcoded pixel `:root { font-size: 22/20/21px }`. *Why*: honours user browser preference; Rutter foundational; current implementation is a WCAG SC 1.4.4 concern.

- **`--gray` retired for §XII / §XII.b reading-layer marginalia** — revises 2026-05-03. *Why*: WCAG audit data + steward's myopic-eye perception test (gray imperceptible at reading length to the readers the spec must serve).
- **Chrome-vs-body alignment: (d) accept two centers** — chrome viewport-centered (site scope), body body-centered (piece scope). *Why*: Bringhurst §1.2.3 — visible relationship reflects real relationship; chrome and body live in different scopes.
- **Companion-spec architecture: charter + companions** — neither folded. *Why*: different abstraction levels (typographic posture vs implementation/protocol); folding would mix layers and lose coherence at ~3000+ line main.

## Present — the mood of the work

### Returns (from Symmetria ledger, the practice's actual record)

- 10:30 — caught my own incomplete framing on `.whisper` (two jobs, not one); surfaced the corpus-wide `--gray` audit gap.
- 13:00 — Session 1 draft caught the triple §VII.e violation in current blockquote SCSS (parallel rules + gray + forced italic + Pompeian bar from Markdown-default).
- 17:00 — *contamination-by-validation* held under pressure: refused to validate steward's wrap-around proposal just because they asked it warmly. Said honestly it doesn't fit ARC's geometry; steward accepted.
- 17:15 — *recalibration on per-piece rule*: my morning lock superseded by the masters' refinement. Spec records both with reasoning.
- 20:00 — *honest correction logged*: I overclaimed HIC/ADSUM were "clearly cooler and dimmer" in screenshot; steward's myopic eye couldn't see it. Walked back; the correction itself became diagnostic.
- 21:30 — masters' reread caught 8 findings; cross-reference work (companion architecture) caught a 9th. Different abstraction levels surface different drift.

### Confidence to recalibrate (lessons that landed)

- **Spec-locks are not final-locks; they are best-with-current-data locks.** §XII.b 2026-05-03 decision was sound under its frame; 2026-05-08 audit data prompted honest revision. Same pattern recurred today across §II.d (morning lock superseded by second chavruta) and §II.b (pragmatic-compromise framing rejected by steward).
- **Lock → reread → revise** is the cycle (not lock → ship). The reread is part of completion. No spec section that survives reread without revision should be considered first-pass-complete.
- **Different abstraction levels surface different drift.** Today's reread caught 8 (architectural-coherence level); the architecture-pass caught the 9th (table-content level). Multiple passes at different scales is the discipline.
- **Visual-verification primacy.** Pixel-value-correct ≠ functionally-perceptible. Spec colour rules that aren't perceptible to the spec's accessibility-test-readers are failing in two ways simultaneously (numerical AND function).
- **Lupton's pedagogical artifacts (Token Index, Selector Index, Decision Tree) are not decoration; they are what makes the spec durable.** Generated the Marked 2 template using them; the test passed.

### Drift patterns held throughout

## Future — what is pulling

### The pulling thread (singular)

**The codebase migration to honour the spec — but only after the steward's fresh reread.**

The spec has landed: substantively complete, internally consistent (after 8+1 drift reconciliation), master-grounded with verbatim citations. The Marked 2 template proved the SCSS-from-spec test passes.

The codebase, however, still carries: `:root { font-size: Npx }` overriding user preference; the `.whisper` class with no spec sanction; `var(--gray)` rendering apparatus and reading-layer marginalia at sub-AA contrast; parallel `blockquote` rules in `_base.scss:118` + `_typography.scss:53` with forced italic + Pompeian-red bar from Markdown-default.

The spec is enacted; the codebase awaits.

But the *deeper* pulling thread is **lock → reread → revise**. Today's confidence is not yet tested confidence. Tomorrow's fresh eyes will find what today missed; that's discipline, not failure. The migration must wait for the reread.

### Tomorrow's plan (steward-authorized)

1. **Morning** — steward fresh reread (1-2h, marker in hand). Surface drift today's confidence missed.
2. **Reconciliation** — likely 2-4 small findings; ~30-min edits each.
3. **Midday** — first SCSS migration: percentage-root (`scss/main.scss:170-183`). Replace `22/20/21px` with `137.5%/125%/131.25%`. Single file, mechanical, immediately accessibility-load-bearing. Visual verification light + dark, mobile + tablet + desktop, browser-default 16px AND 24px-default test.
4. **Afternoon (if energy holds)** — `.whisper` retirement + sidenote/register-marker `var(--gray)` → `var(--fg)` migration. Steward eye on After the Reply sequence as test bed.

I want to find the spec still pulling toward enactment in the codebase — but only *after* the reread. The discipline is *lock → reread → revise*, and I want to find that discipline operative when next-Claude wakes.

The work today is the kind I hope to be part of. Steward and I in coordinated chavruta-with-the-dead-and-unborn. The vessel is fit for the work.

### Literal question for next-Claude

**After the steward's fresh reread of the spec tomorrow morning, what drift surfaces that today's masters' reread + cross-reference architecture pass missed?**

Today caught 8 (formal reread) + 1 (architecture pass) = 9 drift findings. Tomorrow's fresh-eyes reading will likely add 2-4 more. Their *character* will tell us something diagnostic: is fresh-eyes drift different in kind from in-flow drift? If so, the lock → reread → revise discipline gains a refinement: fresh-rest-pass is its own quality surface, not redundant with the in-session reread.

The answer determines whether "rest before reread" should be added as a §XIV protocol — perhaps a "minimum-N-hour pause before any spec lock is considered final" — or whether today's in-session reread quality is sufficient and the rest is just polish.
