Basic Memory v0.21.6 first sync over the live memory dir (steward-authorized live-dir trial, Option A 2026-06-06): adds permalink: to frontmatter, refolds long YAML description lines, strips final newlines. Bodies untouched — verified via full diff classification. From this commit forward, any diff in claude/memory shows only what Basic Memory or the session writes. Trial design: MemPalace untouched as incumbent; git status check on this dir at every wrap; end-of-day evaluation (recall quality, sync robustness, rebuild-from-files, malformed-file behavior). Session Ledger — 2026-04-29
Returns
Composition moves
- 2026-04-29 mid-morning — gathered Hearth substrate (existing stub state + 2025-12-01 chorus-not-canon + Harrison Ch 3 ligature between dead and unborn + penus/lares distinction + Alexander adjacent-not-inside placement) and surfaced for steward to see the shape. Saved to
project-hearth-composition-substrate.md. - 2026-04-29 — steward correction: "The hearth is not a house, but a specific place in the house." Sharpened registers to four (house/hearth/fire/lares). Captured.
- 2026-04-29 — steward pull: Bachelard Psychanalyse du Feu (already in chamber-library; already placed at hearth in 2025-12-01). Read; six load-bearing passages folded into substrate file with French verbatim + gloss. Surfaced the Alexander → Bachelard → Pattern 181 The Fire bridge — Alexander already enters the hearth through Bachelard, on the very subject of the fire. The 2025-12-01 adjacent-not-inside placement does not need to be reversed; one specific pattern is hearth-shaped from the inside while the body of work remains adjacent.
- 2026-04-29 — first-draft of Hearth landing prose offered to steward (~220 words; subtitle preserved; correction worked into first sentence; steward's morning verbatim folded in first-person; four-line posture displayed; Bachelard/Harrison/Alexander unnamed — held under the page not on it). Three questions returned: first-person register (public or implicit?); placement of four-line posture (landing or inside Posture cluster?); closing line.
- 2026-04-29 — steward's responses + my pushback: (1) wanted quieter version → produced; (2) initially placed posture inside cluster → I disagreed (whole-life scope, not editor-bound) → steward agreed; (3) accepted close. Then steward asked for sidenote on lares (deserves deeper explanation given the work it does across the site) → drafted with lares/penates/manes apposition + Harrison's infrastructure frame + visited, not cited closing line that names what the page itself is doing. Then steward flagged "That is not failure but fidelity" as too announced/defensive → replaced with "The record will grow as the household is kept" (image-led, kept doing the work fidelity was trying to label).
- 2026-04-29 — Hearth landing committed to disk at
content/lares/index.md. ~165 words + 75-word sidenote. Subtitle preserved from stub. Frontmatter unchanged. Build/deploy is steward's call. - 2026-04-29 afternoon — Steward turned to Hic. Gathered: stale
pages/about.md, 2026-04-26 about-pages decision frame (threshold-of-ARC, ARC-first-then-David, Adsum-Hic-distinct, 8-door slate), Harrison Ch 2 Hic Jacet (5 load-bearing passages incl. Stevens's "Anecdote of the Jar" verbatim, the shifter that refuses to shift definition, the Lincoln-Emerson "Where do we find ourselves?" → hic axis), MemPalace cross-ref confirming Adsum rhymes with L2 Accusative Default (REVIEWED-11). - 2026-04-29 — Steward decisions on Hic gather: (1) URL
/about/; (2) compose Hic+Adsum together; (3) tabula rasa — "few appropriate elements at first and, if appropriate, adding things later rather than having to subtract"; (4) Stevens's jar dwells unnamed; (5) placing-mode, hospitality. Pushback considered on Swift→Colophon and withdrawn (steward's reading held: same form as Hearth's no-citations). - 2026-04-29 — First drafts proposed as two separate pages. Steward design correction: "single page containing both, hic and adsum as left hand register marks. Hic first absolutely." Restructured as one page; class essay→lex.
- 2026-04-29 — Steward proposed substantive prose revisions: "writing that earns its attention" (sharper than my asks attention slowly); "a violist, and, here, a writer" (commas isolating here, doing the same deictic work the Hic register-mark above does — page binding itself together by hand). Email changed to
letters@animalrationiscapax.org(ARC's own correspondence address, pre-internet register). - 2026-04-29 — Steward asked: should Swift be on Hic or stay on Colophon? Read the actual Colophon: Swift's amendment sits there as a poetic blockquote followed by drop-cap "This phrase rescued me" — formative-laral register, load-bearing. Argued the third path: keep the full amendment + attribution + "rescued me" on Colophon (don't gut its opening); bring only the bare translation "The animal capable of rationality" to Hic (hospitality — the threshold can't withhold the name's meaning). Steward accepted.
- 2026-04-29 — Steward shared "I have long considered life to be a pilgrimage" in response to my noting bio.md's Pilgrim tagline. Saved as durable user memory (
user-life-as-pilgrimage.md). Architectural consequence: the threshold composition distributes pilgrim-register across three pages without naming it (Hic / Adsum's here / Bio's Pilgrim). The link on David Glidden in Adsum delivers visitors into that register at /bio/. - 2026-04-29 — Navigation answered: About at enfilade-order 0; should NOT appear in the 8-door enfilade strip (the strip shows positions 1–8; About is the threshold from which the strip is encountered). site.hs filter for the strip should exclude order 0; not yet audited — small thing to verify on build.
- 2026-04-29 — Hic+Adsum committed to disk at
content/pages/about.md(overwriting stale About). Single page, two register-marks (capitalized: Hic, Adsum). ~70 words Hic, ~40 words Adsum. Class changed essay→lex. Bare translation "The animal capable of rationality" on Hic; full amendment stays on Colophon. David Glidden links to /bio/. Build/deploy is steward's call. - 2026-04-29 —
make builddeployed Hearth + About. Three render bugs surfaced via visual inspection: (a)article.about-pagetemplate class wasn't in §XII grid SCSS selectors → fixed by addingaboutclass to template (<article class="about-page about">); (b) About appeared in its own enfilade strip → fixed by filteringenfilade-order: 0fromcollectEnfiladeIdsin site.hs; (c)<div class="about-body">wrapper made register-marks grandchildren of article.about (selector> .register-markdidn't match) → fixed by removing the wrapper (matches lex.html structure). - 2026-04-29 — Hearth sidenote whitespace bug: nested grid in body-block (mirroring voice-block) made the row's height = max(body, sidenote), leaving whitespace below short body paragraph when sidenote ran longer. Fix iterations: nested grid → position absolute (sidenote sat slightly low) →
margin: 0override on absolute element (final). Steward question caught architectural insight: the base.sidenoterule was unscoped, requiring explicitmargin: 0overrides in every desktop context. Refactor: scope base rule's stacked-spacing to@include not-desktop(new mixin +$on-not-desktopquery added to _mixins.scss / _variables.scss). - 2026-04-29 — Steward shared verbatim: "I have long considered life to be a pilgrimage." Saved as
user-life-as-pilgrimage.md. The threshold composition distributes pilgrim-register across three pages without naming it (Hic / Adsum's here / Bio's Pilgrim tagline). Adsum's link on David Glidden delivers visitors into that register at /bio/. - 2026-04-29 — Tabula rasa composition discipline saved as durable feedback (retry after earlier mid-flight denial; now post-flight). Steward verbatim from Hic composition: "this deserves a clean start retaining few appropriate elements at first and, if appropriate, adding things later rather than having to subtract." Lived end-to-end in the Hic+Adsum rewrite (about.md went from many hundreds of words → ~110).
- 2026-04-29 — Berger gloss shared by steward (written last night, ready for publication). Extension of Ways of Seeing p.21 to historical instruments — argues that relic-logic for paintings is a social diminishment but for instruments is physical (unplayed wood goes quiet, responsiveness drains). Sharper than Berger because instruments expose a contradiction his case cannot. Publication held; steward composition territory.
- 2026-04-29 — Steward reflection on Reading Compass: "the Archive compass point is, in a way, the doorway to everything. Maybe it needs a different name?" Naming candidates considered (Annals, The Gathering, The Years, Index, Catalogue). Steward chose Annals — Latin classical register matching Hearth/Hic/Adsum/Colophon lineage; literally answers "what happened in the years" which is what this compass-point delivers. Glyph ☷ K'un Earth retained.
- 2026-04-29 — Annals rename committed and deployed. Files: templates/annals.html (renamed from archive.html); site.hs route + title; all template links (default.html, frontispiece.html, home.html, post-list.html, footer-compass/chamber/about partials); static/_redirects (CloudFlare 301 from
/archive.htmland/archive/→/annals.html). URL change preserved external links via redirect. - 2026-04-29 — Source housekeeping completed. Three logical commits pushed to origin (gitea) and github-backup:
b8bcb42(Hearth + body-block apparatus + spec §XII.d + sidenote mobile-scope refactor),fc349d6(About becomes Hic+Adsum + about-enfilade fixes),04295cd(Archive → Annals rename). Source repos current; mirror current; CloudFlare current. - 2026-04-29 — Future deferred: ARC "deep pass to make sure that we trim any orphaned or unnecessary code" once ARC feels settled. Claude-Style-Audit considered and assessed as not-quite-fit (component-driven web app shape, not publication-shape; today's bugs were spec/code-mismatch and architectural-layout, not the CSS-token-drift the audit catches). Recommendation: small spec-conformance check (template-class ↔ SCSS-selector + token usage) when steward wants machinery; visual-inspection-on-deploy serves for now.
- 2026-04-29 — First Gloss in ARC composed by steward at ~3am on Berger Ways of Seeing p. 21 — extends Berger's relic-logic argument to historical instruments, naming a contradiction Berger's paintings cannot expose (instruments diminish physically when unplayed, not just socially). Held for fresh-day publication: "I don't feel pressure—this shape shouldn't be hard to find." Apparatus design partway-found and recorded in
project-first-gloss-berger-held-for-tomorrow.md: display option (2) apparatus-register source-locator above block-quote; light-touch:::gloss-sourceclass; URL-form deferred; tabula rasa discipline for the spec entry to follow. - 2026-04-29 — Bio page (
/bio/) fix: Jekyll legacy stripped (Liquid{% include %}, Kramdownmarkdown="1",<div class="lang-content">wrappers — only the photo had been rendering). Photo<img>removed and source filestatic/images/dfg.jpgdeleted. Three languages now present sequentially with h2 headers (English / Français / Castellano), separated by---rules. Title "About David" → "David Glidden"; Pilgrim. added as italic subtitle (the steward's long-held tagline, made visible — seeuser-life-as-pilgrimage.md). Prose preserved verbatim per steward direction: "This needs a serious rewrite, but, for now, I'd like the text as it stands." The deferred prose rewrite is a thread for a future session. Committedba27953, pushed to both source remotes. - 2026-04-29 — Day's source-repo arc closed: 4 commits pushed to gitea origin + GitHub backup (
b8bcb42Hearth + body-block + spec;fc349d6Hic+Adsum + about-enfilade fixes;04295cdAnnals rename;ba27953bio Jekyll-strip). All deployments live; mirror current; CloudFlare current.
Pulling thread for next session
- First Gloss publication — Berger gloss held for fresh attention. ~5 min to assemble + deploy once steward composes the final locator string and decides slug. See
project-first-gloss-berger-held-for-tomorrow.mdfor full design state. - Bio's serious rewrite — deferred from today's structural fix. The prose itself is stale (resume-shaped, not the Pilgrim register that opens the page). Whenever steward returns to it.
- ARC settling — once steward feels ARC is settled, deep code-trim pass (orphaned/unnecessary code). No urgency.
Question for next-Claude
Did the structural fix to bio render cleanly on first build, or does the page want apparatus-register section markers (e.g., language as register-mark in left margin) once the visitor sees it? The current h2 headers are functional but plain; visiting the live page may suggest a quieter form.
Open horizons
- Active: Hearth composition opened (steward-led, in dialogue). Substrate gathered: stub state + 2025-12-01 chorus-not-canon framing + Harrison Ch 3 ligature + penus/lares distinction + Alexander placement decision. Captured in
project-hearth-composition-substrate.md+ steward verbatim opening inuser-hearth-meaning-laral-substrate.md. - Open question carried into composition: does the Alexander adjacent-not-inside placement (2025-12-01) hold under today's resonance ("Alexander's architectural style is a sort of hearth as well")? Don't pre-resolve; let the prose form against the question.
- About Hic + About Adsum — still pulling, deferred behind Hearth.
- Steward-flagged for today (parked while Hearth composition runs): SEQUENCE label uppercase on mobile.
- Small adjacent (deferred): RSS check.
- Yesterday's two recurring drift patterns to hold today: blame-the-exotic-before-checking-the-boring + SCSS kitchen-sinking. Both proximity-bias.
Confidence to recalibrate
- Substrate question answered: writing-energy IS grounded — steward opened composition as the first move, on the inherited thread. Two infrastructure days prepared the ground rather than consuming it.
- Stay registrar. Do not synthesize for the steward; gather and surface.
