# Session 2026-05-26 (afternoon→evening) — ARC Compass → inline SVG, deployed

Single-day ARC session after `/wake-up` (~13:34) into the Stage F thread. The wake's cycle test passed: the b.0.5 lineage-glance read **newest-first** (the `45bbbe6` recency fix live) and the actionable-resumption-point let the wake start without re-deriving — the redesigned wrap→wake clasp worked.

## The arc of the session

**1. Font-swap consideration — raised then CLOSED.** Steward wondered whether IBM Plex is the best sans/mono partner for EB Garamond (candidates: Alegreya Sans, Commit Mono). After the read, steward decided **Plex stays** — *"I'm clutching at theoretical straws; the dissonance is actually serving the larger whole."* Key reframe: in ARC the sans/mono are **functional registers, not reading faces** (Plex Sans = nav-only "Guide"; Plex Mono = apparatus-only "Precision," *locating-not-dwelling*); EB Garamond does all the dwelling. So the Renaissance-serif × machine-age-faces contrast is the **AldineXXI thesis made typographic**, not a flaw. Recorded + closed in `project-arc-rework.md` (2026-05-26 entry).

**2. THE WORK — Compass optical-sizing → full SVG migration (the ELEVATED Stage F item).**

- **Diagnosis (steward: "our numbers never made any difference — something overriding in the SCSS?").** Traced it: NOT a cascade override (the `.reading-compass` per-glyph rules were correctly `!important` + specific). The real causes: **(a) 11 of the 13 sigils are not in EB Garamond** (confirmed via fontTools cmap check — only ❦ U+2766 and ☞ U+261E are) → they rendered from *uncontrolled OS fallback*, so per-glyph `font-size` can never optically equalize a row of heterogeneous fonts, and it isn't portable across devices; **(b)** the optical hacks were **duplicated** across `.reading-compass` (`_compass.scss`) and `.frontispiece-compass` (`_frontispiece.scss`) — editing one while viewing the homepage (frontispiece) changed nothing; **(c)** stale to Stage F (Chamber rule orphaned, `[href*=archive]` dead vs `/annals.html`, 6 new glyphs unstyled). The comment claiming serif "for optimal symbol shape" was false — Garamond never rendered 11 of them.

- **Resolution: all 13 sigils → inline SVG.** One hidden `<svg>` sprite of `<symbol>`s in the **single-source partial** `templates/reading-compass-points.html`, consumed by **both** compasses via `<use>`. Optical balance lives in each symbol's **viewBox**; size is one rule (`.compass-point .sigil`, `1.15rem`); line weight is one knob (`stroke-width: 4` on `.sigil`, inherited by stroked marks, ignored by fills). `fill: currentColor` → dark mode free.

- **Sources (final):** ● ○ ◈ ◉ ◧ ⊙ ☷ ☾ drawn natively as SVG geometry (☾ a drawn crescent — steward preferred it to the font's); **❦ ☞ ¶** extracted as real EB Garamond outlines (fontTools `SVGPathPen` + `BoundsPen`, flip y, frame to ink bounds, center+scale into 0–100 viewBox); **⁂** = three composed Garamond asterisks (`<use>` of a centered `#_ast` def at 3 triangle positions); **✍ (About)** = lifted URW base-35 `D050000L` outline (fontforge → OTF → fontTools; U+270D = glyph `a14`). ▽ Tombeau symbol defined in reserve.

- **Iterative optical tuning (the loop that worked well):** rendered candidates via **Chrome headless → Read the PNG** (verify own work, not guess). Glimpses ◉ rebuilt as thin ring + larger solid centre; stroke knob 4.5→4; ⁂→✍ (positions 8–13) nudged +~15% for even presence. Grounded the numbers by **measuring Apple Symbols' actual outline proportions** (the font that was rendering them by fallback). Steward viewed via screenshots and approved.

- **Glyph reconsideration for ✎/✍ (the hard part).** Tried in order: URW lift (good but license question) → my **drawn** pencil + hand (pencil fine; **hand collapses to a blob at 18px** — I assessed it honestly as the weak mark, didn't oversell) → **icon fonts** (Lucide/Tabler/Phosphor pencil/feather/nib/signature — steward found them **dissonant**, a modern UI idiom against the typographic row). Landed on, with steward, the **typographic** answer: **Gloss → ¶ pilcrow** (real EB Garamond outline — the *capitulum*, "the marginal mark of the gloss tradition," grounded in ARC's *own* spec heritage notes at AldineXXI lines 2178 + 1530 "continuous gloss apparatus"); **About → keep ✍** (the lifted URW hand — the apt symbol, well-rendered, the **one** borrowed mark). Constraint map that ruled out alternatives: † ‡ = footnote markers (taken), § = "see section" (taken), **❧ hedera + ◊ lozenge = explicitly RETIRED** (§IV 2026-04-22), ☞ ❦ ⁂ ◉ already Compass glyphs.

- **Licensing — corrected in-session (a return).** I first asserted URW D050000L was "AGPL + font-exception." Reading the actual `/opt/homebrew/share/ghostscript/fonts/COPYING` showed **GPLv2, no font exception**. Risk **accepted as minimal** (steward's call) because typeface *designs* are not copyrightable — only font *software* is — and it's GPLv2 not AGPL; applied to the single ✍ glyph only. macOS's own ZapfDingbats is Galapagos Design Group (proprietary) — not shippable; good that we checked.

- **Cleanup (do-once):** removed the dead per-glyph `font-size` blocks from **both** `_compass.scss` and `_frontispiece.scss` (~116 lines), collapsing toward the one shared `.sigil` rule (the Tree-north-star consolidation, realised); fixed the false "serif for optimal symbol shape" comment.

- **Spec propagation (Gloss ✎→¶):** content-typology §1 (type table, Gloss entry, status table, both pairing passages), AldineXXI §IV disposition note + §VI sigil table + the **Gloss/Readings pairing recast read/write → annotator (¶) / reader (☞)** per steward, the §VII reserved-glyph list, ARC `CLAUDE.md` sigil table, and the SCSS north-star (marked RESOLVED, licensing corrected). Dated audits/drafts/archives left as historical record.

**3. Ship.** Commit **`e1d0f12`** on `feat/compass-svg-proof` (7 files, pre-commit green) → FF-merge to `main` → pushed `origin` (Gitea) + `github-backup` (`70232ca..e1d0f12`) → `make rebuild` → CloudFlare Pages (675 files) + GitHub mirror (`7be89c6`) → **VERIFIED LIVE on animalrationiscapax.org** (essays + homepage: sprite present, 13 `<use>`, pilcrow `sigil-glosses` in place, no Unicode fallback). Dev server stopped.

## Returns / mood (this session)
- **R1 — asserted a font license from memory, not from the file.** Claimed "AGPL+font-exception" for URW; the on-disk COPYING is GPLv2-no-exception. Corrected by *reading the license*. Drift shape: `asserted-license-from-memory-not-reading-the-file` (kin to the verify-before-assert / `acting-on-inferred-not-read` family). The steward's "how do people use these as emojis then?" was the prompt that re-grounded the whole question (symbol/design free; only specific font *software* is licensed).
- **R2 — honest restraint held.** Assessed my drawn hand as the weak mark plainly rather than overselling it; surfaced the hand-can't-read-at-18px ceiling instead of promising iteration would fix it.
- **Discipline that paid off:** **render-and-look** (Chrome headless → Read PNG; rasterized my own SVGs and the candidates) instead of guessing at shapes; **measure the real font** (Apple Symbols proportions, Garamond glyph coverage) instead of eyeballing. Verify-before-assert applied to visual output.

## Where ARC stands
A–E done; **Stage F**: dwellings/Compass shipped+published (Second Edition), and now the **Compass optical-sizing — the ELEVATED item — is RESOLVED + deployed**. Remaining Stage F: `content-types.yml` generator · per-piece marginalia render · vignette Phase 1 renderer · the audit(s) [SCSS cascade + Hakyll-simplicity + code-represents-spec] · (minor) `aria-label`-per-link a11y pass on the compass. Stage G (jurist → content-typology OPERATIVE) closes the arc. On `main` @ `e1d0f12`; next work branches fresh.

## Pulling thread (singular)
**ARC Stage F remaining.** The Compass (the ELEVATED item) is closed and live; the thread continues with whichever Stage F item the steward picks next (generator / marginalia / vignette / audits). Not a cliffhanger — a clean summit.

## Actionable resumption point (as of wrap — re-judge against what changed)
ARC on `main` @ `e1d0f12`, clean and pushed; `feat/compass-svg-proof` merged (deletable). The compass thread needs nothing further unless cross-device check turns something up. **Candidate first move:** read `project-arc-rework.md` (canonical tracker) + ARC's local `CLAUDE.md`, then confirm with the steward which remaining Stage F item leads, and branch fresh from `main`. (Pre-existing untracked `static/fonts/eb-garamond/_backup_2026-05-15*` dirs are not ours — leave them.)

## Literal question for next-Claude
The migration's whole purpose was **device-independence** (the old per-glyph font-size was non-portable because of OS fallback). We verified the markup is live and SVG is deterministic — but has the steward actually *seen* the compass render correctly on a **non-Mac device** (phone / Windows / Linux browser)? That empirical cross-device confirmation is the unborn part. (Secondary: which Stage F item did the steward choose to lead?)

## Pause statement
The Compass thread is at a clean summit — resolved, deployed, verified live on animalrationiscapax.org; I'm turning away from it. I don't know what will have changed on return. What I want to find still pulling: **ARC Stage F** (the remaining items), and the deployed compass **holding up** — ideally confirmed on a device that isn't this Mac.

## Decisions deferred (and why)
- **`aria-label`-per-link a11y** on the compass links (they now rest on `title` for their accessible name; SVG is `aria-hidden`) — deferred; already on the spec's accessibility audit list, not blocking.
- **The remaining Stage F items** (generator / marginalia / vignette / audits) — not started; the Compass was this session's focus.
- **Font-swap (Plex → Alegreya/Commit)** — not deferred but *resolved/rejected*: the dissonance is load-bearing.
