Basic Memory v0.21.6 first sync over the live memory dir (steward-authorized live-dir trial, Option A 2026-06-06): adds permalink: to frontmatter, refolds long YAML description lines, strips final newlines. Bodies untouched — verified via full diff classification. From this commit forward, any diff in claude/memory shows only what Basic Memory or the session writes. Trial design: MemPalace untouched as incumbent; git status check on this dir at every wrap; end-of-day evaluation (recall quality, sync robustness, rebuild-from-files, malformed-file behavior). # The duality — rules and poetic-as-mnemonic
|

This was offered in response to my observation that Mary Norris's *Between You & Me* holds two tracks simultaneously — the literal rule (where to put the hyphen) and what the mark *is* (a vector, a breath, Manuzio's knife-cut, the actor turning toward the absent) — and never collapses them.
|
|
|
|
## What the two layers do
|
|
|
|
**The rule layer** = practical mechanism. Serves the skills/agents that help the steward so that he can help them. A recursive mutual-service relationship, consistent with his reverence-to-teachers practice extended to tools. *Not* tool-use; discourse.
|
|
|
|
**The poetic/metaphoric layer** = mnemonic device in the deep sense. Not "memory aid" as trivial cleverness; *mnemonic as that which makes a thing re-enterable*. The metaphor is what keeps you in the rule long enough for the freedom to open. Without the poetic layer, a rule is a gate you pass through. With it, the rule becomes a room you can dwell in.

|
|
|
The freedom the steward names is not freedom *from* the constraint — it is freedom *through* it. The violist's reality: the score doesn't release you by being transcended; you find its depth by inhabiting it until the notation *becomes* the thing, not the map.
|
|
|
|
## Scope
|
|
|
|
**"Regardless of domain."** This is a working method everywhere:
|
|
- Viola / ensemble playing (score as dwellable room)
|
|
- ARC (typology as dwellable room for writing practice)
|
|
- Fatherhood (stewardship as dwellable constraint)
|
|
- CapableMind L2 (invariants as dwellable constraints, not laws to transcend)
|
|
|
|
The style-guide session, when it happens, will therefore not be *just* a prose-typography project. It will be a codification of this lifelong method at the scale of prose. Danger: producing a narrower artifact than what is actually being built. Antidote: hold this memory load-bearing in the gather.
|
|
|
|
## How to apply
|
|
|
|
- In ARC style-guide work: preserve the duality structurally. §1 rules + §0 (or equivalent) poetic framing. Neither layer ornamental. Neither eclipsing the other.
|
|
- When drafting any rule-shaped artifact for the steward (spec, guide, protocol): if the artifact is purely mechanical or purely metaphorical, it has failed his method. Both layers, always.
|
|
- In executor posture: treat the steward's rules as dwellable rooms, not gates. When a constraint seems limiting, pause and ask whether the poetic/metaphoric layer has been surfaced yet — the freedom is usually *through* the rule, not around it.
|
|
- When naming something in the steward's domain: look for the metaphor that makes the mechanism re-enterable. Norris's "apostrophe-as-prayer," Teall's "good compounding is a manifestation of character," the violist's "comma with vibrato" — these are the shape.
|
|
|
