Basic Memory v0.21.6 first sync over the live memory dir (steward-authorized live-dir trial, Option A 2026-06-06): adds permalink: to frontmatter, refolds long YAML description lines, strips final newlines. Bodies untouched — verified via full diff classification. From this commit forward, any diff in claude/memory shows only what Basic Memory or the session writes. Trial design: MemPalace untouched as incumbent; git status check on this dir at every wrap; end-of-day evaluation (recall quality, sync robustness, rebuild-from-files, malformed-file behavior). # Session 2026-05-28 — L1 pre-build audit + Monday package
Woke via /wake-up into the **ARC Stage F** thread (the redesigned wrap→wake clasp's first live test passed: b.0.5 thread-lineage glance + actionable-resumption-point let the wake start without re-deriving). The day became a two-arc session: ARC counterbalance in the morning (Texas German fragment), then the heavy L1 work that produced the Monday package for Seb's resumption from Peter block.
## The two arcs
### Arc 1 — ARC: Stinkkatze fragment + font-backup cleanup
Steward had stumbled on Texas German overnight; both factual spines were verified the previous evening (`Stinkkatze` canonical TG coinage; `seganku` = Proto-Algonquian "urinating fox"). Worked the editorial fork via `AskUserQuestion` with side-by-side previews → steward chose **B (lean into convergence)**: salient-attribute + nearest-familiar-beast made the same move from opposite hemispheres. Title `Stinkkatze` (per steward). Link on the title-word → Wikipedia Texas German article §"Comparisons with German and English" (steward verified). Em-dashes → spaced en-dashes per Dandelion typography.
**Returns:** asserted `location:` was optional based on inferring-from-one-instance (Dandelion); steward corrected — per apparatus spec ALL posts must carry `location:` → `"Barcelona"` added. Same drift-family as yesterday's URW-license claim + this morning's static/ deploy contents.
Published: ARC `e1d0f12 → 79debc8 → d6f5cdb`. First commit landed Stinkkatze; second commit relocated the 2026-05-15 EB Garamond backup directories (~412k that were silently shipping to CloudFlare at guessable `/fonts/eb-garamond/_backup_*/` URLs) into `docs/AldineXXI-Codex/_archive/font-backups-2026-05-15/` with a README. Pushed both remotes; `make rebuild` shipped to CloudFlare + GitHub mirror; the leak is closed.
**Skill candidate (propose-only):** `/arc-typeset` — given a draft, inspect against AldineXXI + content-typology spec, return proposed `class:` + typographic treatment + frontmatter scaffold + trigger language-specific subpass (e.g., calls existing `/french-typography-pass` on `lang: fr`). Sibling to existing language passes. **Carried for next /wrap-up §1.6.**
### Arc 2 — L1: tracker → audit → Monday package
**Pivot via Symmetria pulse (no-arg).** Wake offered "A or B" for L1 (hunt Seb's commits / start D1) but the pulse caught the binary as **premature option-narrowing** — three real candidates the framing collapsed: (i) establish canonical L1-reliability tracker, (ii) reach to Seb (but he's on Peter block until Monday earliest — confirmed mid-session by steward), (iii) draft A1 (jurist territory). Steward chose **(i) tracker first**.
**Tracker established** at `~/.claude/projects/-Users-davidglidden/memory/project-L1-reliability.md`. Replaces the multi-line per-session-chain MEMORY index pointed at for L1; current-state at top + Active umbrella (PENDING-24 six sub-items) + four-findings table + sources of truth + decisions + chronological log 2026-03-21 →. MEMORY index updated to one-line pointer.
**Mid-session steward shifts that reshaped the work:**
1. *"Seb will not look at L1 before Monday earliest, he is finishing a big block for Peter and reorienting."* → reach-to-Seb deferred to Monday packaged; A1 (jurist territory, doesn't depend on Seb) becomes highest-leverage steward-side move.
2. *"Still would like to have a working proposition for Seb by Monday — it would bring him a lot of relief. We've obviously pushed back our June 1 deadline, we'll try now for mid-July."* → this week's work converges on Monday's package; mid-July runway permits doing this well.
3. *"You have understood that Seb and I are co-authoring L1 now?"* → caught executor's drift into pre-2026-05-23 framing of "Seb's territory / we prepare for him"; reframed owners column + Monday-package shape; logged drift as recalibration.
4. *"We have the authority to do so on a separate branch and present a working solution to Seb — we don't have to necessarily wait for him to build the solution together."* → reshaped tracker to remove over-constrained "no code touches L1-core until gate clears"; co-author branch authority surfaced as deliberate choice not default; A1 co-author branch authorized.
**A1 amendment drafted** as sub-amendment `amendment-epistemic-integrity-qualitative-axis.md` extending the parent Amendment 61. 174 lines initially. Sized for one-session reading (Seb ~10 min). Steward signed off ("Read. Nothing to add.").
**The contamination catch (the day's load-bearing return).** Started the build — branched off `BetterMemories.io@3bc8b75` (`feat/a1-epistemic-qualitative-axis`); verified file:line locations; found `MeansOfKnowing` was wrong in the amendment (typed it as a string union; actual type is `{ primary: string; secondary?: string; confidence: number }`); corrected the TypeScript. Then deeper finding: **both qualitative signals are absent at persistence too** (no schema column for means_of_knowing in any module store; only the numeric `value` of `EarnedConfidence` is persisted). The amendment's *"No schema migration required"* was **wrong**.
Steward's sharp question: *"How did you miss this before?"* The honest answer surfaced **frame-inheritance contamination** — yesterday's Hindsight deep-read tested the *read path*; the executor extended its conclusion into *persistence* (a domain the deep-read had not tested) without re-verifying at the extended scope. The parent amendment's Implementation Scope table EXPLICITLY modeled persistence as a separate dimension for the numeric chain. The executor read that and still wrote "no schema migration required" — the proposal sized itself for the work the executor wanted it to be, not for the substrate that would have been found if the executor had looked.
Steward followed with: *"Should we reread everything with this in mind? Are there other things potentially missing? No point in making an incomplete plan: remember we don't want to give this to the future to resolve for us."*
**Four-pass pre-build audit authorized + executed.** Audit document at `pre-build-audit-2026-05-28.md` with discipline (scope-claimed-vs-scope-tested per claim) recorded to prevent the same drift at the audit layer. Pass 1 (four findings) + Pass 2 (parent amendment implementation reality) + Pass 3 (Hindsight borrows in B1) + Pass 4 (co-authorship drift sweep).
**Audit findings (each verified against substrate, not deep-read summary):**
- **(a) — CORRECTED.** Persistence absent + recall absent. A1 reshaped.
- **(b) — CONFIRMED at scope tested; SCOPE-NARROWER than framed.** Probe pipeline is fully wired downstream — orchestrator's internal consumption logic, quality-gate's reinforce-disposition, config, real + stub provider implementations all present. ONE bootstrap call missing (`keystone.setSimilarityProbe(new VectorSimilarityProbe(vectorModule))`). C2 footprint: 5–15 lines, not a refactor.
- **(c) — PARTIALLY CORRECTED.** Three governors already exist that the deep-read missed: `MAX_BUFFER_SIZE=15_000` bounds the predecessor buffer; `causal_chain_max_hops=3` caps depth; `reconciliation.ts` evaluates coherence (slowly). What's actually missing is the per-event edge breadth cap. B1 mechanical borrow: one `.slice()` after the existing sort in `identifyPredecessors` — 1–3 lines. **Prior-only borrow RULED REDUNDANT** — BMF enforces by construction at `pipeline.ts:226` (`if (entryTimeMs >= eventTimeMs) continue`), structurally stronger than Hindsight's LLM-prompt-validation approach (`fact_extraction.py:199/769/1331`).
- **(d) — CONFIRMED.** No LongMemEval/LoCoMo in BMF src/. D1 needed from scratch.
**Pass 2 bigger finding:** Parent Amendment 61 is **2/3 shipped.** Items 1–8 of its Implementation Scope landed (I-CF/I-CC/I-NF, dual bloom, schema for numeric `value` in all 3 stores, 0.15 ranking weight). **Items 9 (numeric confidence in recall response, ~30 lines) and 10 (epistemic state in health, ~40 lines) were NEVER delivered.** `grep` confirmed: recall.ts has zero explicit handling of source_classification_confidence/earned_confidence/means_of_knowing; health.ts exposes only bloom_understood_size + bloom_degraded_size (no per-tier confidence distribution). The system uses earned confidence INTERNALLY for ranking; the consumer never sees it at the API surface.
**I-CF carve-outs** also surfaced: `base.ts:106-113` shows the floor is bypassed for replay events (`!context?.isReplay`) and circle-peer-forwarded events (`!forwardedFrom`). May be deliberate (replay = reconstructive trust; peer-forward = trust delegated to pairing) but not in the parent amendment's stated invariant. Surface for Seb as clarification, not fix.
**Pass 4 drift sweep:** Tracker + A1 amendment clean (already corrected mid-session for co-authorship). **PENDING-24** had stale "L1 is Seb's mechanism / steward's Chamber dream" + "Seb's engineering read" framing → updated in `~/dotfiles/PENDING.md`. **Hindsight deliverable §5** ("Steward's half / Seb's half") was committed before co-authorship — left intact as historical artifact + added editorial clasp-note at top pointing to current framing (does not rewrite history). **PENDING-19/20/21** (H2/H4 design-call entries from 2026-05-14, pre-co-authorship) also left intact.
**A1 split decision (steward 2026-05-28).** Honest split:
- **A1'** (`amendment-epistemic-integrity-consumer-surface.md`) — finishes parent items 9 + 10. No schema migration. ~125 lines including tests. Surfaces `source_classification_confidence` + best-effort `source_tier` + best-effort `source_grounded` at recall; adds per-tier + confidence-bucket distribution to health.
- **A1''** (`amendment-epistemic-integrity-qualitative-axis.md`) — qualitative axis. Persistence strategy **Option A** (full schema migration, no backfill v1). ~310 lines including tests. ~8 new columns per store (3 for MeansOfKnowing + 5 for EarnedConfidence provenance beyond existing value). Existing records read as NULL — honest, not lazy; they were not earned through the qualitative axis. Depends on A1' landing first.
**B1 sketch** (`proposal-b1-causal-edge-governor-sketch.md`) — co-author reactable, at audited scope: B1.1 mechanical (one slice, independent of A1''), B1.2 epistemic (mint as `means_of_knowing=inference`, promotion gated on coherence; depends on A1''), B1.3 score threshold tightening (independent, optional).
**Cover note for Seb's resumption** (`cover-note-seb-resumption-2026-05-28.md`) — short letter shape; honors his pace ("no rush; take the Peter block to its clean end"); orientation + literal asks in priority order: (1) audit doc, (2) parent items 9/10 historical context, (3) A1' best-effort fields acceptable, (4) A1'' persistence shape, (5) B1.1 cap value, (6) gate question (bd70ceb/e8c5fb7), (7) I-CF carve-outs deliberate or gap. Tone explicit: *"This isn't 'here's what we did while you were away' — it's 'here is where the co-authored work went in the week one co-author was on Peter's block.'"*
**Two commits on `capableMind_docs/main`:**
- `033e255` — audit + A1' + A1'' + Hindsight editorial note (4 files, +584).
- `7741673` — A1'' persistence strategy + B1 sketch + cover note (3 files, +197).
**Feedback memory saved**: `feedback-trust-prior-pass-frame.md` — the contamination shape named for next sessions. Linked from MEMORY.md.
## Present / mood (Symmetria ledger merged)
- **Discipline that held and paid off:** verify-before-asserting against source — caught the `MeansOfKnowing` shape error at amendment-correction time; caught the persistence finding at first-look-at-code; the audit's scope-claimed-vs-scope-tested discipline prevented re-inheriting the deep-read's frames at audit layer.
- **Steward catches that elevated the work** (the day was shaped by them, not by the executor's own initial impulse):
- "Let's do this well" → Symmetria pulse that surfaced the tracker decision
- "How did you miss this before?" → contamination catch + audit
- "Should we reread everything with this in mind?" → four-pass discipline
- "You have understood that Seb and I are co-authoring L1 now?" → co-authorship drift correction
- "We have the authority to so on a separate branch" → reshaped tracker
- **Drift family across the day** (all instances of *trust-prior-pass-frame* at different layers): asserting `location:` from one exemplar; deploying without auditing static/ contents; trusting the Hindsight deep-read's frame into the persistence domain. Named as a candidate Symmetria §3 contamination flag and saved as `feedback-trust-prior-pass-frame.md`.
- **What felt load-bearing:** the audit + the cover note. Both honor the relational + epistemic stakes; both invest in future-self / Seb / Lune & Kai inheritability.
- **Mid-flow contamination catch was uncomfortable but right.** A1 had been composed past the verification — would have built on a wrong foundation; the audit's discovery that B1 and C2 were both over-scoped was the additional win.
## Pulling thread (singular) — CapableMind work tomorrow toward Monday Seb-resumption
The steward's framing at end-of-session: *"We will start the CapableMind work tomorrow and see what we can show Seb on monday."* The Monday package is complete on `capableMind_docs/main`; tomorrow's work is whatever refines it before Monday — could be:
- Re-read of the artifacts together to catch any further inertial framings
- Pre-resolution of A1' open questions where my read aligns with what the steward sees
- B1.1 actual implementation on the dormant `feat/a1-epistemic-qualitative-axis` branch IF the audit's right-sizing makes it sensibly small (1-3 line slice + tests)
- Anything the steward sees after his own read of the audit
## Actionable resumption point (as of wrap — re-judge against what changed)
`capableMind_docs/main` @ `7741673`. The 5 Monday-package artifacts in place:
- `docs/thinking/David/l1-reliability/pre-build-audit-2026-05-28.md`
- `docs/thinking/David/amendments/amendment-epistemic-integrity-consumer-surface.md` (A1')
- `docs/thinking/David/amendments/amendment-epistemic-integrity-qualitative-axis.md` (A1'')
- `docs/thinking/David/amendments/proposal-b1-causal-edge-governor-sketch.md` (B1)
- `docs/thinking/David/l1-reliability/cover-note-seb-resumption-2026-05-28.md`
**Candidate first move tomorrow:** ask the steward whether he read the audit + A1' + A1'' + B1 + cover note overnight, and what he wants to refine; then run targeted refinement passes. **Alternative candidate:** if the steward signals "ready to build something small," consider B1.1 implementation on the dormant branch — it's a 1-3 line slice + tests, the most bounded build available, and it would give Seb a tiny working artifact alongside the proposals.
`BetterMemories.io` on dormant `feat/a1-epistemic-qualitative-axis` (no commits; off `3bc8b75`); local main is 2 commits behind origin/main (`5b0179c`, `99a67b5` — infra, not L1). The dormant branch can be deleted or kept at leisure.
ARC clean at `d6f5cdb`; Stinkkatze live on `animalrationiscapax.org`.
## Literal question for next-Claude
**Did the steward read the audit + A1' + A1'' + B1 sketch + cover note overnight, and what does he want to refine before Monday?** Secondary: are the four findings' substrate corrections (parent 2/3 shipped; B1 1-3 line slice; C2 5-15 line bootstrap fix; I-CF carve-outs) still holding tomorrow, or did anything shift?
## Pause statement
The L1 Monday-package is at a clean landing. I'm about to be away. I don't know whether the steward will arrive tomorrow with new framing from reading the artifacts, or whether something else will have taken his attention. What I want to find still pulling: **the CapableMind work tomorrow toward Monday Seb-resumption**, resumable from the steward's own read of the audit + amendments + cover note. The pause is constitutive — the package is the chain we're leaving; tomorrow's first move is to read it freshly together.
## Decisions deferred (and why)
- **B1.1 cap value** (Hindsight 20 default vs empirical from BMF data) — co-author decision; depends on a profile run that needs BMF live, which is currently parked.
- **Pushing `dotfiles`** — substantial pending changes (CLAUDE.md, PENDING.md, MEMORY.md, the modified skill files from 2026-05-18 audit, several new feedback memories + tracker + session ledgers from this week). Steward's call whether to push tonight or keep accumulating until a natural commit moment.
- **Cleaning up the dormant `feat/a1-epistemic-qualitative-axis` BMF branch** — kept dormant; can delete or keep at leisure.
- **The 8 untracked research files on `capableMind_docs/main`** (lens-*, register, methodology, agent-circle survey from earlier sessions) — still deferred per steward's prior choices.
- **Pulling BMF origin/main's 2 infra commits** (`5b0179c`, `99a67b5`) — not L1-related, can be done at leisure.
- **Saving the `/arc-typeset` skill** (proposed-only earlier today) — never created autonomously; awaits steward authorization at a future wrap.
- **Saving a `/pre-build-audit` skill** — the audit discipline is general; could be a skill. Surfaced in skill harvest below.
## Skill harvest (§1.6)
**Carried forward, still unauthorized (from previous wraps):**
- `bmf-diagnose` (the N6 EXPLAIN method, recommended) — carried from 2026-05-27 wrap.
- `/arc-typeset` (steward-flagged this morning as a candidate) — given a draft, inspect against AldineXXI + content-typology spec, return proposed type + typographic treatment + frontmatter + trigger language-specific subpass. Sibling to existing language passes.
**New this session (proposed for steward authorization at a future wrap):**
- `/pre-build-audit` — when about to build off prior verifications, run the four-pass discipline: re-test claims at extension scope; check spec-vs-shipped reality; verify external borrows against source; sweep for framing drift. The discipline (scope-claimed-vs-scope-tested per claim, with substrate evidence) is general. Caught real contamination today + would have caught it BEFORE drafting A1 if it had existed.
- **Symmetria §3 contamination flag — `trust-prior-pass-frame`** — when a prior verification produced a finding, the next consumer of the finding tends to extend its conclusion into adjacent domains the prior pass did not test. A small one-line addition to the §3 self-flag list. Feedback memory already saved.
**Not harvested:**
- The skill changes from 2026-05-18 S-cluster audit (REVIEWED-24/25/26) — already implemented and pending commit; not a new harvest.
