- 2026-07-06T13:5x — **Framing correction, caught against the substrate (not the record).** The staged GRADUATION-STATE.md described the Olson IA body layer as "CLEAN (0 U+FFFD/cid) → light cleanup (page numbers, running heads)." Reading the RAW: it is *character*-clean but *layout*-dirty — page-furniture (running heads + page numbers) interleaved into flowing prose at all 278 form-feed boundaries, prose broken mid-sentence across them, plus OCR noise lines and within-line OCR errors (Ihope/Farmerr/MetaAnalysis). ALSO: the resume note's body boundaries are running-head positions, not true section starts — true Preface heading = RAW line **397**, not 439 (439 is a mid-Preface running-head repeat); "Notes" @11633 likewise a running head, real endnotes start earlier & restart per-chapter. ALSO: the governed `normalize_ocr.py` does not fit this input as-is — it keys on `## Page N` markers (RAW has form-feeds) and detects ALL-CAPS running heads only (this book's dominant furniture is *title-case* recto heads). Instrument decision → extend the governed tool generally (form-feed input + case-agnostic page-top-recurrence detection), NOT a book-specific hack (gap-7: a tool re-encoding structure independently of the spec is drift). FIX-class per REVIEWED-44/45 precedent. Verified before asserting; surfaced to steward before building.

- 2026-07-06T10:5x — Steward reframed the compaction ("this recurs — what's the durable fix?"). Returned from execute-the-authorized-task toward diagnose-the-class: the recurrence is role-conflation + no self-bounding + no load-integrity gate. Named it; proposed structural fix + wiring. Steward deferred leans + authorized wiring.

- 2026-07-06T11:0x — Measurement caught my own would-be miss: I'd have done the two-file split and declared victory, but the wake-critical CORE was already 23.7KB (over ceiling) — the split alone is insufficient. The 8KB ARC tracker line (a chronological log crammed into the index) was the real bloat. Measured before asserting; slimmed exactly the one fat line, left the 13 lean ones untouched. Kin to census-before-claiming.

- 2026-07-06T11:1x — Executed as byte-exact line-range slices (nothing retyped) + md5 byte-conservation proof + full link-resolution canary. Canary flagged 8 unresolved links; VERIFIED all 8 pre-existing in the original (moved verbatim), zero regressions, 7/8 resolve to real files, 1 genuinely-dead pointer that predates the pass. Did not assert "clean" from the split alone — proved conservation + zero-new-breakage.

- 2026-07-06T14:3x — **Guard caught my own bug (verify-before-claiming-clean paid off).** First `--pdftotext` run FAILED the verbatim guard (`raw='X' canon='ix'` at raw#320): my seam/reflow break-conditions checked LONE_PAGENUM but not LONE_ROMAN, so roman page numbers were absorbed into prose. The word-identity guard flagged it — exactly the PASS-BUT-FALSELY it exists to stop. Two-line fix → re-run PASS. Did NOT trust the "looks clean" of a first pass; trusted the guard.

- 2026-07-06T14:1x — Held proportionality against the cram-warning: completed the MECHANICAL tool (furniture+reflow, guard-verified, 46/46) solo, but stopped at the pre-curatorial boundary to checkpoint before the fidelity-critical judgment steps (structure anchoring + eccentricity-vs-scan), which are where "fresh attention, not crammed" bites.

- 2026-07-06T10:37 — Session opens on a steward-set sequence: (1) MEMORY.md compaction (AUTHORIZED 2026-07-06; 213KB/659 lines) — real memory movement, so backup→surgical→verify-links; then (2) execute REVIEWED-49. Doctrine pass DONE; A1 freed the sweep.

- Drift flags to hold for the compaction: `careless-edit-boundary-introduces-typo-in-untouched-text`; `assert-from-grep-hit-without-reading` (recurred on a prior MEMORY split-at-N estimate). The file is INTERLEAVED — a naive split-at-first-`## Archived` was caught-and-avoided last time. Surgical only; wake-canary (every pointer + [[link]] resolves) after the move.

Inherited the prior wrap's load-bearing return as the governing tension: **do the 92.5K-word verbatim graduation with fresh attention, not crammed to "get to A2"** — the chamber's thesis is that a rushed-but-plausible text is worse than none. Infra loose end closed while away: chamber github mirror first-push landed (`4c5892e`, task exit 0). To sweep at next wrap: `~/dotfiles` has an uncommitted `M REVIEWED.md` (the REVIEWED-49 placement).

## Confidence to recalibrate

- 2026-07-06T15:1x — **LCSH-notation catch (near-miss, named).** Almost characterized ~200 short lines as "OCR noise" to strip; the census revealed most are CONTENT — LCSH thesaurus codes (BT/NT/RT/UF = Broader/Narrower/Related/Used-For), list markers, subject-heading examples — in a book ABOUT subject headings. Blind stripping would have destroyed content (PASS-BUT-FALSELY). Cleanup reduced to a small scan-grounded fix set; genuine speckles left verbatim (spec: uncertain→leave).

- Cleanup DONE + logged (`the-power-to-name-olson.OCR-CORRECTIONS.md`): ≠ restored (scan p.177), Anzaldúa/Cherríe (scan p.193), Luiseño/Farmer/able-bodied/"I hope", 6 furniture lines dropped. All counts fail-loud-asserted.

- **STRUCTURE-INSERTION COMPLEXITY (the fork to raise):** insert_chapter_headings' unique-anchor model doesn't fit as-is — (a) chapter titles were dropped as furniture (anchor on prose/section-head instead); (b) subsection titles REPEAT across ch2/ch3 (Olson parallels Cutter & Dewey — "Universality and Sameness as Desirable", "The Canonicity of DDC", etc. each ×2 → non-unique) + 3× "CONCLUSION"; (c) some heads glued to a following lowercase quote by the Phase-1 in-page rejoin (which lacks the heading-guard I added to Phase-2 reflow — a real tool inconsistency). Recommended path: fix Phase-1 heading-glue + extend insert_chapter_headings with an occurrence index (general, generative-from-spec) + build the full ~50-row structure map. Checkpointed for fresh attention.

## Authorization moves

- 2026-07-06T14:0x — Steward PROBED the framing (would an olmOCR-class rescan solve the structural/layout problem, then just single out eccentricities?). Answered with substrate evidence: pdftotext preserved the crown jewels (Dewey reformed-spelling block PERFECT; "confuzion" in-context; "Ite/arating" ×25 w/ 2-3 OCR variants) but LOST "≠"→"#" (one heading). Key reframe: eccentricity-verify-against-scan is unavoidable under ANY path (pdftotext already lost one) → rescan doesn't remove that step; and the layout-fix faculty (VLM semantic linearization) IS the fidelity-risk faculty (silent normalization of the exact A2 misspellings) — trades a bounded/detectable casualty list for an unbounded/silent one. **Steward RULED: proceed faithful (pdftotext + guarded furniture-strip).** Fidelity-doctrine-adjacent methods call, steward-decided.
