The 2026-06-06 normalization sweep (3f9a89b, 283 files) prepended a stray
permalink-only frontmatter block to 39 memory files, 20 of them session wrap
records. Any real frontmatter parser reads the FIRST block, gets `permalink`
alone, and never sees name/description/type.

The sharp case: `strip_frontmatter` exists specifically to stop thread extraction
from matching inside `description:` — its docstring says so. On those 20 wrap
records it strips the stray block and hands the real frontmatter back AS BODY,
producing exactly the condition it was written to prevent.

Repair merges permalink into the real block and drops the duplicate. Nothing
retyped: frontmatter and body are carried as slices, body md5 asserted unchanged.

TWO DEFECTS OF MY OWN, both found only after claiming success:

1. THREE FILES DAMAGED BY THIS SESSION'S OWN STAMPING COMMIT (ef6fa94). That
   script located frontmatter with a non-greedy `^---\n.*?\n---\n`, which on a
   stray-block file matches the STRAY block — so it appended superseded_by to the
   wrong block and orphaned the real frontmatter into the body. That is the same
   non-greedy-first-block blindness diagnosed in strip_frontmatter one hour
   earlier, reproduced in the tool written to clean up after it.
   And the post-stamp check reported "malformed: none" because it asked "does the
   file start with frontmatter then a banner" — true for all three — while the
   claim was "the stamp preserved the record's metadata". The control's subject
   was adjacent to the claim's, for the sixth time today and the first time in my
   own verification. Repaired, verified against the pre-stamp file from git: no
   key lost, prose preserved.

2. REPAIRING 20 APRIL-MAY WRAP RECORDS MOVED THEIR MTIMES TO TODAY, and
   `sec_pause` picked "newest wrap" by mtime — so the digest promoted an April
   session to `Last wrap` and lost both the pulling thread and the open question.
   Caught by the DEGRADED section, which is the honest-degradation mechanism doing
   its job. `sec_pause` now selects by git add-time, like `wrap_events`. Residual
   stated in the comment: add-time lags the wrap by hours, so `Last wrap` is an
   upper bound — wrong by hours where mtime was wrong by months.

Verified after: 0 two-block patterns, 0 orphaned frontmatter, 16 stamps intact
with name: present, 381 pointers resolve, 0 dead, selftest PASS, drift clean,
digest reports 0 degraded sections and the correct last wrap.

Not defects: context-discipline.md and relational-gap-analysis.md use the
`title:`/`type: note` convention and have no `name:` — flagged by my check, correct
as they stand.

# Session 2026-05-10 — /aldine-xxi/ rewrite design session
A long substantive design session — ~5 hours of chavruta + capsule design, ending with a saved draft at the threshold of masters' reading. Inherited the pulling thread from 2026-05-09 (rewrite as honest distillation) and made significant ground while not finishing — by design. The page is scoped at posture; the capsule is locked at starting form; the three held questions are named and resourced. Tomorrow's masters' read will resolve them in series.
## Past — what we did
### The arc, compressed
- **Wake-up + Symmetria init** — inherited /aldine-xxi/ pulling thread; steward shared MemPalace commit `c652c2f` (Nick's docs commit on embedding-models per steward's PR suggestion) — sits beside the multilingual thread but isn't action for us today.
- **Steward proposal**: page should *show* what it explains — asymmetric with register marks, a real sidenote, a capsule design (occasion to surface §XII.e RESEARCH), sources list.
- **5-section outline sketched** (§I–§V, with capsule in §II, sidenote in §III, figure+caption in §IV, sources at foot, dedication). Glimpse and drop-cap excluded per steward.
- **Steward catch (~10:30)**: per-piece composition rule + marginalia presence ALREADY PRODUCES asymmetric form — my framing of "departure to asymmetric on screen" was inventing a question the rule had already answered. Drift named: *framing-as-departure-when-the-rule-already-produces-the-form* (cousin to yesterday's *extending-precedent-by-criterion-that-no-longer-discriminates*).
- **8-voice chavruta convened** at steward's call. Slate: Bringhurst, Tschichold, Hochuli, Lupton, Manutius-via-Margolis, Alexander, Bachelard, Calvino. Steward direction: qualitative, one question at a time. *"Read texts when unsure, no fabrication."*
- **First question chosen**: *what is the voice and register of an honest distillation that teaches by being? what does AldineXXI sound like when it speaks for itself to a general reader?*
- **Round 1 — independent positions**, each grounded in chamber-library verbatim. Discovered: bge-m3 mine pre-dates corpus expansion; first-pass semantic search lagged for Calvino, Alexander, Hochuli — had to direct-path-lookup. (Diagnostic note for L1.)
- **Round 2 — cross-talk on four axes**: pedagogy vs. literature; addressee; teach-its-own-reading; admit-brittleness.
- **Round 3 — discriminator test confirmed three convergences**:
1. **Literary register, tuned for reach** — not pedagogical switch.
2. **Composed structure, not exposed scaffolding** — italic-summary where it lands as composition, not flagged.
3. **Admits the discipline's brittleness** — held conviction with named seams, not closed catechism.
- **Two questions surfaced as steward-calls; steward resolved both with depth**:
- **Dedicatees: *the dead, the living, and the unborn.*** *"This is my modest contribution to humanity."* Echoes the architectural synthesis horizon (chamber/CapableMind: *to not be orphans in time, and to have something to give to the unborn*). Manutius's gift-economy at the largest possible scale.
- **Voice: first-person *I* offering hospitality, in hope of *we*.** *"I have come to these conclusions, but it is in hope that the reader dwell as I dwell when I read."* (Closing sentence later refined by steward — *"as I do when I read"* removes the four-word "dwell...dwell" repetition while preserving meaning anaphorically.)
- **Sequence options 3 → 2**: dedication line landed first (*For the dead, the living, and the unborn.* — italic, body color, foot placement); then opening-paragraph sketched.
- **Capsule design — through three iterations of steward catches**:
- First proposal (margin, blockquote-mimicry styling): structurally crude.
- Steward asked: precedent before Davies? Search across expanded typography folder confirmed: Lacroux/*Imprimerie nationale* convention reserves brackets for cross-references and editor's notes (*"une règle par ailleurs bien établie"*); encyclopedic small-caps tradition (OED, Britannica) for cross-references; Davies as crystallizer of compound. **Steward also asked: would the spec allow small caps?** Yes, if added as a new principled use under §XII.e (disambiguators: brackets vs bare for acronyms; inline vs full-line for register markers; first-reference vs end-of-quote for attribution).
- **Steward catch (~14:30)**: *"sidenotes are rendered in body text, why would a capsule be rendered in apparatus text?"* — spec criterion is *inside-the-reading vs. locating-from-outside*, not narrative-vs-technical. - **Steward catch (next)**: *"capsules are mini-essays, and I am not sure that the margin is a place for that. Maybe take a direct look at a few of Davies' capsules."* I had been theorizing without examining. Read Davies's ARCHIMEDES capsule directly: ~400 words, body column with hairline frame, headword in small caps as title, can have numbered sub-sections, anchored at end of body sentence with `[ARCHIMEDES]` bracketed-small-caps. Davies: *"Each capsule is anchored into the text at a specific point in time and space, and is marked by a headword that summarizes its contents. Each can be tasted as a separate, self-contained morsel; or it can be read in conjunction with the narrative into which it is inserted."*
- **§XII.e Capsule starting form LOCKED** per steward's *"lock the form; let first-use teach"* discipline:
- **Anchor in body**: `[TERM]` small caps in brackets, end of relevant body sentence.
- **Body position**: body column (not margin), set apart by hairline rule above + below.
- **Body register**: EB Garamond (body register, sidenote register).

- **Length for AldineXXI**: ~100–250 words (calibrated for single-capsule page; Davies's 400+ fits a 1300-page book).

- **Capsule text size held for masters' reading** — steward instinct: ever-so-slightly smaller than body. Bringhurst §3.1 has "one-point-smaller" convention. Defer until focused reading session.

### Decisions made (canonical)
- **Page voice = ARC's literary register, tuned for reach** — not pedagogical switch. Lupton's accessibility-discipline applies (must reach the stranger), but the answer is welcoming-literary, not warm-pedagogical.
- **First-person posture = I offering hospitality, in hope of we.** Steward's verbatim. Final closing line: *"I set it down in the hope that the reader will dwell as I do when I read."*
- **Dedication = *For the dead, the living, and the unborn.*** Italic, body color, placed at foot (after Sources, before Colophon link). Steward's call.
- **Page is asymmetric because it has marginalia.** Per-piece composition rule + marginalia presence = asymmetric form. No declared §II.d departure; the rule produces the form.

## Present — the mood of the work
### Returns (from Symmetria ledger)
- **~10:30** — *framing-as-departure-when-the-rule-already-produces-the-form*. Caught by steward on §II.d asymmetric question. Cousin to yesterday's *extending-precedent-by-criterion-that-no-longer-discriminates* — both invent a question where the rule has already answered.
- **~10:30** — *two-for-one efficiency-frame leaking into aesthetic territory*. Caught self on figure+caption pairing in §4. Each demonstration earns its place by what it teaches, not by what it bundles.
- **~14:30** — *register-assigned-by-content-type-without-checking-spec-criterion*. Caught by steward on capsule-in-apparatus-register. The reflex was: definitional/technical → apparatus. ### Confidence to recalibrate (lessons that landed)
- **Compose-in-dialogue protected the steward-resolution moment.** The two questions Round 3 couldn't settle (dedicatee, first-person posture) needed *the steward's own posture*. Resolution came with full depth (dead/living/unborn echoes architectural synthesis; *I*-with-hope-of-*we* holds the relationship between them honestly) — exactly what the practice is for.
- **Direct examination > theorizing.** I proposed Davies-style capsules without reading Davies. The eye on the actual ARCHIMEDES capsule produced the right form in five minutes. *Look first; theorize after.*
- **Spec criterion > content-type categorization.** Body-vs-apparatus on ARC is *inside-the-reading vs locating-from-outside*, not narrative-vs-technical. Reflex categorization based on content-type is the wrong move — the question is always: where does the reader's relationship to the text place this element?
- **The discriminator test has body now.** Round 3 ran the test honestly on three convergences and they held; named the two it couldn't resolve as steward-calls. Yesterday's test ("everything is inside the reading on a site like this") + today's ("ARC's body voice is literary, no pedagogical mode exists") confirmed: the test surfaces fake convergences before they harden.
- **The corpus-grew-but-index-didn't pattern is real.** Multiple times today the bge-m3 mine returned tangential results for sources that are in chamber-library. Direct-path-lookup recovered cleanly. Diagnostic for L1 (separate from #10 sequential dispatch).

## Future — what is pulling
### The pulling thread (singular)
**Masters' reading session — focused half-day reading typography masters in the expanded chamber-library to resolve three held questions in series: capsule text size, §IV named-territory deepening, and multilingual posture.** The reading does the work for several decisions at once. Unblocks /aldine-xxi/ page rewrite resumption (composition-quality work; steward leads the prose; today's draft is the substrate).
The natural session-shape: a few hours of focused reading (Bringhurst §3 Rhythm & Proportion + Hochuli's micro-typographic discipline + Tschichold + Müller-Brockmann + Williamson + Saenger + de Hamel + Lacroux + Sousa), then resume /aldine-xxi/ with the three questions resolved and any new spec to consider.

### Pause statement
I am about to be away from this. Today's work — the chavruta producing real convergences, the capsule design through three iterations of steward catches, the saved draft that captures the whole at the right moment — is exactly what the practice is for. The /aldine-xxi/ rewrite sits at a threshold: scoped at posture, locked at starting form, with three held questions named and resourced. I want to find that threshold still active when next-Claude wakes — not the work undone, but the next move ready: a focused masters' reading that resolves three things at once and unblocks the prose composition.
### Literal question for next-Claude
**After reading the masters, does the synthesis §IV calls "named territory between traditions" actually get named by any single source — or does it remain genuinely between?**
Today's small bet was on the latter (Williamson, Saenger, de Hamel as candidates but no direct source surfaced in yesterday's first search; all three now in the typography folder for direct reading). Connected:
- If Saenger's *Space Between Words* lands the territory through medieval marginal-apparatus history, §IV's note revises to credit Saenger.
- If de Hamel's *Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts* shows the form before Aldus, §IV credits manuscript tradition.
- If Williamson's *Methods of Book Design* describes the post-Aldine synthesis directly, §IV credits Williamson.
- If none of them lands it directly, the synthesis stands as named-but-uncited and is itself part of what AldineXXI contributes — and that's worth saying explicitly.
The deeper question behind this: does ARC contribute new territory to the typographic conversation, or only inherit and apply? The answer changes how the page speaks of its sources — gratitude to inheritors vs. honest naming of a contribution that is genuinely small but genuinely the steward's. Either is honest; the answer matters for the §V close and the dedication's *modest contribution to humanity* phrasing.
