The record is updated where information ARRIVES and never where a reader LOOKS.
Three instances found the same day, each with the correct information already
written down elsewhere:
REVIEWED-81 (AUTHORIZED 07-28) -> PENDING-81 still reads open
the ARC open-work register, which -> those 6 trackers still read live
says in its own description that
it supersedes them, with a
per-file verified verdict

The third is the sharpest: both halves sit in the SAME document, so no tooling
gap explains it. ~/CLAUDE.md already rules this under Memory Discipline
("mark the superseded record as superseded"); the rule is being applied to facts
and not to trackers, PENDING items or register entries, which are also facts
about state.
Executed under steward authorization, arrears only:
- 16 trackers stamped `superseded_by:` + `superseded_on:` AND a visible in-body
banner. The banner is the point — metadata alone repeats the defect, since the
finding is about what a reader sees. 9 obsoleted by the 2026-07-07 MemPalace
wind-down; 7 already carrying the register's own verified `DONE-retire`.
- B3's label corrected, with the two-month error left visible rather than
silently amended.
- Nothing moved, renamed or deleted: 381 pointers resolve, 0 dead, 0 mis-authored.
HARVESTED BEFORE STAMPING, and this is why the harvest came first:
`project-mempalace-library-incremental-remine-strategy` carried a steward-verbatim
rule that is instrument-independent — never run a single multi-day index; order by
criticality; gate each tranche on READBACK, not on write-success (933,576 drawers
once stored successfully and could not be read back at all). It lived only inside
a MemPalace tracker, so retiring the instrument would have retired the rule with
it. ~/CLAUDE.md names that exact hazard: "state the obligation first and the
instrument second, or the next retired tool takes a rule down with it." Now
`feedback-bulk-indexing-runs-incrementally-with-readback.md`, and it applies to
studium-engine corpus work.
Held back deliberately: 2 correctly-parked files with named dependencies, 2 named
nowhere (returned to the steward), and 39 trackers unread — recorded as a gap,
not as a finding.
Measurement note: every earlier estimate of tracker staleness was wrong, because
both mtime and git-last-commit were reset across 283 files by the 2026-06-06
normalization sweep. The honest figure excludes it: median 90 days.
Filed as PENDING-142 ADDENDUM 2 per steward direction (fold, do not file anew).

# ARC open-work register
|
||
|
||
**Single source of truth for what is OPEN on ARC.** Built 2026-06-11, ARC `main @ b220620`, live. Each item verified against code/live where marked **[verified]**; **[VERIFY]** = status uncertain, check before calling done. The rigorous spec↔code half is `/spec-code-audit`; this register also carries the content/governance/Phase-2 surfaces that audit does not.

|
||
> **Why this exists.** Stage G (sealed 2026-06-10) closed the *spec*, not ARC's *work*. Open items were scattered across the tracker, ten standalone `project-arc-*` files, PENDING.md, the spec's held set, and content sweeps in no spec. On 2026-06-11 several of those surfaces proved drifted in both directions (the AldineXXI selector index listed shipped features as "planned"; "pending" files described done work; real work sat unlisted). This register is the reckoning.

## A — Open build work (the two undesigned-SVG-asset items the spec names but never realized)
|
||
|
||
- **A1. Vignette (F+1) — the big remaining build.** `[OPEN]` **[verified]** — 0 `.vignette` rules in compiled CSS, nothing rendered. Spec ready: `vignette-specification.md` (revised 2026-06-07, PENDING-31; build-time SVG+CSS renderer, Phase-α engine, zero-JS, AldineXXI §IX). Brief: `drafts/vignette-spec-revision-brief-2026-05-28.md`. The largest open build; the steward named it as "the big thing left."

- **A2. The cul-de-lampe — the designed Close ornament asset.** `[DONE 2026-06-17 — designed · first-instanced · rolled out to 7 essays · spec resolved]` — **the cul-de-lampe is live.** Confronted EB Garamond hederae (U+E001/E002, OFL), `.ornament.close`, **one text-em tall** (em-anchored, not constant — REVIEWED-42 consistency), `var(--fg)` opacity 0.7, CSS mask. Asset+rule+spec committed `d736df1`; rolled out (close on 7 essays; Vespers + Mushi-Ken reworked & **versioned**) in the follow-on commit. Close-only ruling: Essay/Hommage/Tombeau carry it; Fragment refused; Photo-essay declined; rest held-off (§IV *Which types carry the Close* + Sub-table 6, both reconciled). Placement = end of text proper, before Sources (apparatus spec). Publication mandate: every completed essay carries it. **The content half (B3) is now unblocked + started.** *Historical context (the long road to this) below:* — AldineXXI §IV names the *function* (Pause = rare within-piece breath, smaller scale; **Close = end-of-piece, the *punto finale*, full scale — "the visual signature of completion; *finis coronat opus*"**) but the **actual designed SVG cul-de-lampe is undetermined** — spec §IV *"Open question: the designed Pause/Close ornament itself"* **[OPEN — 2026-05-03]**, *"the asset itself is yet to be determined."* **[verified]**: compiled CSS still carries the *retired* classes (`.ornament.completion`, `.ornament.section`, `.ornament.chapter`, …) and has **no `.ornament.close`/`.ornament.pause`** — the asset was never designed, so the migration never ran (interim: the three-dot `.ornament` from the 06-07 hr doctrine stands in for Pause-at-threshold). Sibling to A1. Design sub-questions (one asset at two scales vs paired-distinct; motif lineage — Aldine cul-de-lampe vs Roman/Pompeian) in `project-arc-pause-close-ornament-and-hr-audit-pending`. The content half is **B3**. *(Caught by the steward 2026-06-11 — it was buried under the generic "ornament migration"; it deserves its own line as the crown of every finished piece.)*

||
## B — Open content sweeps (largely steward-owned, manual)
|
||
|
||
- **B1. Glimpse location + title cleanup.** `[OPEN — steward manual]` **[verified]** — steward does this by hand (2026-06-11). 193 live glimpses; **4 lack `location:` frontmatter**; titles need a cleanup pass. NB the glimpse *rendering* bugs (phone full-bleed, no-vessel) were fixed + deployed in Stage M — this is content/metadata, not code. Absorbs the residual of `project-arc-apparatus-refactor-todo` Tier 3 (EXIF/location for existing glimpses — now ~done).
|
||
- **B2. Threshold-`---` promotion walk.** `[OPEN — steward content track]` — apply the 2026-06-07 differentiated-hr doctrine across existing pieces: a bare `---` at a foreword→main-text *threshold* becomes `.ornament` (dots); `---` *within the body* stays silence. Doctrine + CSS settled (§IV amended, zero CSS change); the per-piece content walk remains.
|
||
- **B3. Ornament content migration (Option A) — the content half of A2.** `[OPEN — UNGATED 2026-06-17 when A2 landed; scope VERIFIED 2026-06-11]` — ⚠ *label corrected 2026-08-17: this read `gated on A2` for two months after A2 completed. A2's own entry had recorded "the content half (B3) is now unblocked + started" on 06-17 — so the fact was known and written, just never written **here**, which is where a reader checking B3's status looks. Kept as a marker of that failure mode rather than silently amended.* — steward ruled Option A (2026-05-03): once the cul-de-lampe asset exists (**A2**), migrate content off the retired-ornament classes onto the canonical Close/Pause, then retire the old SCSS. **Verified scope (sizable):** ~**95 content files** carry hand-authored `<div class="ornament …"></div>` — `completion` ×51 (= the Close / end-of-piece, the cul-de-lampe's job), `section` ×50, `thought` ×14, `chamber` ×12, `musical` ×7, `hermetic` ×5, `mathematical` ×2, … Several variants (`thought`, `mathematical`) aren't even in the current CSS → they already collapse to bare `.ornament`. All retired per §IV; all await the designed asset. Not negligible, and not runnable until A2. Files: `project-arc-ornament-spec-vs-content-mismatch-pending`, `project-arc-pause-close-ornament-and-hr-audit-pending`.
|
||
- **B4. Major content audit / archive of non-current files.** `[OPEN — was deferred]` — per ARC `CLAUDE.md` Known state: deferred until "the current version of the site is established; do not rearrange the content tree until that session." Stage G sealed arguably satisfies that condition now — candidate to schedule.
|
||
- **B5. Rethink the versioning links.** `[OPEN — design reconsideration; steward-raised 2026-06-17, NOT for now]` — the steward feels something "doesn't sit right" about the version-stamp links and couldn't yet name it. Current behaviour (verified in built HTML): the piece-end stamp reads *"Begun [place] **[origin-date→/v/]** · Revised [place] [revised-date, plain]"* — the **origin date is the only link**, leading to the prior version; the `/v/` page announces "You are reading a prior version… Read current →." Executor's candidate diagnoses (offered, not settled): **(1)** the cul-de-lampe (a *completion* seal, *finis coronat opus*) and the version link pull opposite ways — the close says *done*, the link a few lines below pulls *backward* into the superseded version; adding the close may have sharpened a latent tension. **(2)** "Begun [date]" frames the link as inception/seed, but the destination is a *complete prior essay*, not a beginning — label/destination mismatch. **(3)** for pieces revised by *subtraction* (Mushi-Ken's appendix, Vespers' loudness), the linked prior is the version the author *improved away from* — disclosing *that* a revision happened is integrity, but making the discarded version the foot-of-page reading-*destination* may overreach: provenance offered as invitation. Hunch: it's #1+#3 — ADR-005 designed versioning as a *record*, but rendered as a link it behaves like a parallel reading-path, and that sits oddly under a completion mark. Revisit when the steward can name it. (Grounds: ADR-005, essay-versioning-specification.md §3–4; the version-stamp builder in `site.hs`.)

||
|
||
## C — Deferred by design (Phase-2 / held — trigger-gated, NOT drift)
|
||
|
||
- **C1. Print/PDF posture + `arc-typography.sty` v0.3.** `[DEFERRED — Phase-2]` — build the Print/PDF LaTeX templates; update `tools/latex/arc-typography.sty` (v0.2, found stale vs current doctrine 2026-06-10) to current spec (posture-aware ragged/justified, Medium headings, 27.2rem measure, British quote-norm, xelatex glyph routing). Governs all future ARC PDFs. File: `project-arc-pdf-print-postures-session-plan`.

||
- **C2. OpenType feature catalogue (§I.i.j).** `[DEFERRED — Phase-2]` — feature→CSS mapping; the Stage-G audit (06-09) enumerated the set; the session opens against it. (`zero` absent from every EB Garamond face — recorded.)
|
||
- **C3. Held companions — Appendix D.** `[DEFERRED — Phase-2]` — Navigation Philosophy, Print Stylesheet, Footnotes — named, not drafted; reactive, no date.
|
||
- **C4. §VII.d Footnotes / Endnotes.** `[DEFERRED — first-instance]` — research/parked pending the first essay that needs the register.

- **C5. Held typographic options.** `[DEFERRED — held]` — justification (→ print spec), hanging-punctuation (→ browser Baseline), word-spacing (held at 0.20em default), reader font-size control (held; the banish-JS gate's one named exception).

- **E1. `project-arc-breadcrumb-spec-pending`** → `[DONE—retire]` **[verified]** — breadcrumb componentized + governed permanent sibling (2026-06-03); `.breadcrumb` lives in `_navigation.scss`.
|
||
- **E2. `project-arc-mimesis-acquisition-debt`** → `[DONE—archive]` — RESOLVED 2026-05-20 (stated in-file). Chamber-library import, not ARC-site work.
|
||
- **E3. `project-arc-404-page-design-pending`** → `[DONE—retire]` **[verified 2026-06-11]** — **the file predates the §VII.h spec and is stale.** Apparatus §VII.h (ADDED 2026-05-20) governs the 404; `content/404.md` + built `_site/404.html` **conform exactly**: `<title>Animal Rationis Capax</title>`, body "No text at this address.", real 404 via CloudFlare. Built and conformant, not "design pending." (Any future Close-ornament on it rides A2.)

- **E4. `project-arc-apparatus-refactor-todo-2026-05-06`** → `[DONE—retire]` — Tier 1/2 shipped (`e2fb14c`/`249475b`); Tier 3 glimpse location ~done (189/193) → residual in **B1**.

- **E5. `project-arc-spec-master-typographer-audit-pending`** → `[DONE—retire — superseded]` **[verified 2026-06-11]** — the masters-compliance pass was performed: `_audits/deep-typographic-audit-2026-06-09.md` exists (6-agent, masters folded), atop the 06-07 full bidirectional + 06-10 spec↔spec coherence audits. Retire unless a *specific* uncovered master-compliance dimension is named.

- **E6. `project-arc-web-typography-spec-coverage`** → `[DONE—retire]` **[verified 2026-06-11]** — Tier 1 all DONE (Lists/Code/Headings); Tier 2/3 DONE (Selection, Tables, Numerals, Smart-punct via §I.k). Only residual = the `<abbr>`/`<mark>` "styled-but-never-specced" corner; no ARC content meaningfully uses them — negligible, deferrable.

|
||
## G — Infrastructure / functionality / features (for a dedicated future ARC session)
|
||
|
||
**Session framing (steward, 2026-06-24):** when an ARC infrastructure/functionality/features session opens, **prioritize in-spec-but-not-built items first.** The **Vignette (A1)** is the flagship — in spec (§IX + `vignette-specification.md`, Phase-1-ready) yet zero built, no trigger gating it. **Open the session with a `/spec-code-audit` pass to census any *other* in-spec-but-non-existent items** so the priority list is concrete, not a hunch. The link-rot system (G1) is the first new-build candidate; the **Gwern.net deep audit (G3) is a companion track the steward wants to lead himself.**

||
|
||
- **G1. Link-rot prevention / link archival (Gwern borrowing).** `[PROPOSAL — noted 2026-06-24, not started]` — steward-raised on publishing *Two Notes* (its *fūrin* Wikipedia link reopened the thread). Adopt a *proportionate* version of Gwern's link-preservation discipline for ARC's external citations. **Three rungs:** (0) *detect* — `make linkcheck` (e.g. `lychee`) over the corpus → dead/redirected-link report, optionally scheduled; (1) *archive-on-publish* — submit each external link to the Internet Archive Save-Page-Now (+ archive.today), record `url → {snapshot, date}` in a sidecar `data/link-archive.yml`; (2) *self-host + fallback render* — local SingleFile snapshots + a template/apparatus offering the archived copy (auto-swap on 404). **Governed, not in-stride (steward-flagged):** Rung 2 touches **`site.hs`** (the carefully-rewritten Stage-G routing/contexts — §1 protected surface) and the **sealed AldineXXI spec** (how an archived-link fallback *renders* is a typographic/apparatus decision → jurist territory), plus new build infra; Rungs 0–1 are lower-risk (script + data file) but still warrant the loop given reach. **Path:** `[PROPOSAL]` in PENDING.md → jurist on the rendering/apparatus question → phased build (0→1 first; 2 a considered decision — ARC's small scale may make a full self-hosted mirror disproportionate). **Ethos:** link-permanence = the prime directive applied to citations (*build what you will not need to rebuild*; a corpus inheritable by Lune & Kai without dead links).

|
||
- **G2. Zero-JS reading-progress bar (Gwern-occasioned).** `[CANDIDATE — borderline-loud, undecided; needs steward judgment first]` — Gwern's bottom running-head/progress bar is pure JS (declined under banish-JS, REVIEWED-32). A zero-JS `animation-timeline: scroll(root)` progress bar was flagged 06-22 as an iPhone test candidate (different/simpler than the §VII.f `view()` reveal, which won't drive on iOS for a fixed consumer). **Caveat:** an always-on progress indicator is *visible chrome* — it may not survive ARC's quiet-over-loud filter; decide whether it's wanted at all before building. If yes, a ~10-line CSS test → load on a real iPhone. (Was ledger-only 06-22/06-23; promoted here so it perdures.)

- **G3. Deep audit of Gwern.net (steward wants to lead).** `[OPEN — steward-initiated]` — a deliberate harvest pass over gwern.net through the recorded filter: *adopt the invisible durability craft (build-time, provenance, permanence); decline the visible density (popups, JS progress, similar-links clutter, link-dense ToC).* Probe candidates worth a proportionate ARC version: integrity hashes on archived snapshots, build-time link-checking (folds into G1), quiet backlinks, content-addressing / perdurance patterns — and explicitly catalogue what to **decline**. Output: register entries surfaced for steward decision, not a fait accompli. Shared nerve with Gwern = the *intent to perdure* (he loudly, ARC quietly), not his density.

## F — The chronological tracker
|
||
|
||
`project-arc-rework.md` is the **narrative** record, true through **2026-06-07 evening** (last entry: the pre-3R Fowler note). It is owed compact appends for **06-08 → 06-11**: W3R re-partition close + deploy; Wave 5 + measure→72ch + soft rag; **Stage G CLOSED + reconciled + SEALED + GPG-signed** (06-10); **§VII.f running head + W1.15 compass presence-reveal** shipped (06-11). The tracker's "CANONICAL STAGE STATUS" line (≈L3852, "as of 2026-06-05") is stale. **This register now carries current open-work truth; the tracker carries the story.** Tracker annotated to point here (2026-06-11).
