# Session 2026-04-24 — Lex-of-ARC architecture day

## Shape of the session

Woke into the *Norris-gather (lex)* thread. Steward authorized the gather with a methodological gate: read Harrison Ch 5 / Vico §240 first, so *lex* lands from the text not from inference. What followed was a full day of architectural work on the style-guide-as-sheaf method, with three separate tightenings (form, container, rule-base) each triggered by the steward catching a reflex of mine and returning us to the tradition. By evening, the posture cluster was complete with committed recognitions, §XII Sidenotes was in the AldineXXI spec, and the ARC CLAUDE.md had been cleaned of eight months of drift.

Steward was rehearsing (viola) in parallel, working with me in breaks. Quality of attention held through fatigue; he explicitly paused at two moments to reorient via rule-base rather than intuition-alone.

## Past — what we did

### 1. Harrison Ch 5 read; *lex* clarified

Steward: *"Lex — Dominion of the Dead, chapter five, specifically page 79 discussing Vico §240. Please give the chapter a read before we begin."*

Read `chamber-library/converted_texts/traditions/critical_modernity/phenomenology/the-dominion-of-the-dead-harrison.md:306-376` in full. Key finding — Vico §240: *lex* was "first a collection of acorns… a collection of vegetables… a collection of citizens… Finally, collecting letters, and making, as it were, a sheaf of them for each word, was called *legere*, reading." Reading is itself a lex-act. The gather *is* the law. Harrison's extension: *lexification* as retentive binding.

### 2. Steward's architectural framing for lex-of-ARC

Two verbatim moves that reshape everything:

> *"anything I gather from sources to create the 'lex' of ARC, the constraint within which I will have the freedom to write, is a gathering of those sources which formed me."*

> *"It gives the style-guide (and our various spec in general) the necessary binding to recognize and name that which is already there that I may not yet see."*

**Implication** — the sheaf is *diagnostic*, not generative. It gives names (drawn from the formative voices) for practice already present in the steward. My role: **registrar, not author.** Scope: all ARC/CapableMind specs, not just style-guide.

### 3. The Norris gather (executed)

Registered the sheaf — 8 section Norris gather covering posture / marks / music-and-measure / mark-not-made / apostrophic / public-private genre / craft-and-tool-fitness / practice-across-life. Voices named with direct quotation; no pre-recognition.

### 4. Form settled: hybrid Shape A + Shape C

Steward: *"hybrid A and C — the A for the skills/agent circle, the C for the dwelling."* Same sheaf, two faces:
- **Shape A** (skills/agents) — rule-first, voice-as-pillar, machine-legible.
- **Shape C** (dwelling) — voice-as-body, rule-as-marginalia, mnemonic.
- **Structural discipline**: both render from same source. Drift between faces would be this project's module-health-vs-recall decoupling. Single-source-of-truth mandatory.

### 5. Container: sidenotes (theorized)

Steward: *"container first because we need to design this. It is a fantastic opportunity to build out sidenotes don't you think? The text comment upon itself rule → voice."*

Reconnoiter found **AldineXXI §XI already flagged sidenotes as "awaiting governance"** with the explicit question: *"theorize and activate, or remove."* Open since July 2025. Two-system distinction surfaced: (a) quiet sidenotes for reader recognition (our case); (b) polyphonic marginalia for Chamber multi-voice work (separate governance session).

### 6. Six design decisions ruled (2026-04-24)

1. **Typographic layer**: reading (Garamond, slightly reduced). Crosses §I layer rule — framework revision.
2. **Marker glyph**: none.
3. **Anchor granularity**: one-to-one.
4. **Name of artifact**: held open. *"let's sit with this one."*
5. **Scope**: theorize §XI now; apply first to style-guide.
6. **Content tree**: per-cluster pages (maintainability lean).

### 7. MVP form proven across three rounds

Hand-rendered `~/Downloads/lex-posture-form-test.html`. Revisions:
- Round 1 — desktop reads clean; mobile needs differentiation.
- Round 2 — added Tufte tap-to-expand + visible tri-state theme toggle.
- Round 3 — steward invited critique: *"What is your opinion, is there a better way?"* Pushed past Tufte-by-reflex → proposed always-visible upright differentiation. Accepted.

### 8. The pause on italic/bold

Steward: *"A pause: what is the role of the italic? What is the role of bold-face? I was saying last night that I wanted to review a good rule base to reorient even though I have a good feeling for this."*

Caught my own **italic-by-analogy-to-epigraph without rule-base check**. Second reflex in one session. Authorized Bringhurst consult on Ch 3 (Harmony & Counterpoint).

### 9. Bringhurst Ch 3 consult

Located at `chamber-library/converted_texts/collections/typography/bringhurst_elements_style.md` (16,333 lines; OCR artifacts `&` for `e`). §3.4.1 names sidenotes explicitly in the italic tradition: *"Typically, roman was used for the main text and italic for the preface, headnotes, sidenotes and for verse or block quotations."* Italic for sidenotes is canonical, not reflex. §3.5.2 emphasis hierarchy: small caps (least disturbance) → italic (moderate) → bold (most).

### 10. Steward ruling: italic canonical + density exception

> *"As long as we use it for the lex of ARC as a sidebar exception because of density, but keep italics as part of the general sidebar spec — to be reevaluated when there are enough side notes extant to judge properly."*

Canonical: italic. Exception: upright-reduced when sidenote-to-voice-block ratio ≈ 1:1 (the lex-of-ARC dwelling pages). Reevaluate when non-lex sidenotes accumulate. **Density-exception as governance move** — honor canon + lived page + find the exception's edge. Registered as successful pattern.

### 11. Chamber-library reference base surfaced

Two small returns when steward pointed me to `chamber-library/converted_texts/collections/`:
- Pulled Bringhurst from `typography/` earlier without walking the directory.
- Went to Desktop for Norris when chamber-library already held her. Drift pattern: *imagined-state-vs-verified-state* from 04-20 family.

Collections inventory (see `project-lex-as-method-for-arc-specs.md` for full map):
- `style_guides/` — Norris, Bernstein, Fowler, Graves & Hodge, CMS, MLA, UNESCO
- `typography/` — Manutius, Warde, Tschichold×2, Bringhurst, Lupton, Butterick, Fleishman, Ruder

### 12. Targeted Norris re-read + two attribution returns

Read `style_guides/Between You & Me_ Confessions of a Comma Queen - Mary Norris.md` targeting three passages. Caught **two errors in yesterday's surface-registration**:

1. **McPhee** — yesterday: *"declined a correction because it broke cadence."* Wrong — Norris *almost corrected* what she thought was a typo, then stayed her hand because she might be wrong. Posture is epistemic-self-doubt, not cadence-honoring.
2. **Saunders / St. Aubyn conflation** — yesterday: *"Saunders (three options including keeping the dangler)."* Wrong — the three-options framing belongs to St. Aubyn; Saunders got voice-preservation treatment.

**Drift pattern registered**: attribution-by-pattern-match-instead-of-verification. Cousin to sourcing-claims-without-reading from 04-22 family.

### 13. Posture cluster: 8 voices verified

Burkle-Young & Maley · Norris anti-ultracrepidationism · Norris foundry proofs · Norris on McPhee · Norris on St. Aubyn · Norris on Saunders · Lu Burke · Salter.

### 14. Dialogue-drafting: method clarified

Steward: *"please draft recognitions so that we can work through them together — I work best whil in dialogue, this you know."*

**Registrar discipline modified**: default is registrar (voices present, margins empty), but dialogue-drafting is authorized scaffold on explicit request. Drafts are anvils to strike against, not imposed recognitions. Not a license for autonomous authoring.

### 15. Eight recognitions committed

Draft → dialogue → commit. Refinements noted in `project-lex-as-method-for-arc-specs.md`. Pattern: steward moved several recognitions from defensive/split framings to elevated/unified framings.

1. **Burkle-Young & Maley**: *Kindness in correction is foresight.*
2. **Norris — anti-ultracrepidationism**: *The editor stops where the writer's authority begins — proportion, not just restraint.*
3. **Norris — foundry proofs**: *Every correction names its maker and its moment.*
4. **Norris on McPhee**: *The urge to correct may be the error; stay the hand until certainty earns the intervention.*
5. **Norris on St. Aubyn**: *Leaving the text alone is as much an editorial act as changing it.*
6. **Norris on Saunders**: *The writer's voice lives in the form; fixing the form fixes the voice out.*
7. **Lu Burke**: *Editing removes; the writer's voice rises from the space.*
8. **Salter**: *Writerly authority is taken, not granted.*

### 16. Reader-orientation decision

No per-page meta-commentary. Form teaches itself through (a) Warde crystal-goblet restraint, (b) structural repetition, (c) opening voice-block as epigraph. §0 threshold does form-setting once (Warde candidate). Preview-note on current MVP is scaffold; goes at production.

### 17. AldineXXI §XII Sidenotes committed to spec

Edited `~/_Dev/animal-davidglidden-eu/docs/AldineXXI-Codex/AldineXXI-specification.md`:
- New §XII Sidenotes (typographic treatment + density exception + responsive behavior + source-and-render + reader orientation + dormant system + scope)
- Renumbered old §XII Archive → §XIII; old §XIII Governance → §XIV
- Removed sidenote entry from §XI

The "awaiting governance" flag on sidenotes (open since July 2025 framework v2.0) is now closed.

### 18. ARC CLAUDE.md cleaned

`~/_Dev/animal-davidglidden-eu/CLAUDE.md`: 420 → 197 lines. Dropped 19 duplicate auto-status blocks, July 2025 session-memory protocol, Unified Consciousness Engine plans, Living Epistemic Glyph System (superseded by §IX vignette), historical markers. Kept/refreshed: Prime Directive, Access/Build/Deploy, Architecture Overview, Reading Compass cross-ref, workflow. **Auto-append bug diagnosed**: `scripts/update-docs.py:139` regex `([^#]+)` terminates at first `###` subheader — new status blocks prepend without old ones being removed. Deprecation named in new CLAUDE.md; retire script in follow-up.

## Decisions made + rationale

- **Sheaf as diagnostic** (not generative). Steward's own framing; load-bearing across all spec work.
- **Registrar default**; dialogue-drafting on explicit authorization. Not a blanket prohibition on drafting; a guard against silent/reflexive pre-recognition.
- **Italic canonical for sidenotes, density exception for lex**. Honors Bringhurst §3.4.1 + the lived page. Density-exception as general governance move.
- **Reading-layer sidenote** (crosses §I layer rule). Principled: margin-note IS part of reading, not external locating apparatus.
- **No per-page meta-commentary**. Warde crystal-goblet posture; typography teaches itself.
- **No tap-to-expand on mobile**. Single-sheaf-two-faces principle must hold on all viewports.
- **Per-cluster pages** (maintainability lean over single-long-sheaf).
- **AldineXXI spec cleanup over time** — §XII added 2026-04-24 [ADDED] marker parallels §IV's [REVISED 2026-04-22] convention.
- **CLAUDE.md curated, not auto-generated**. `make docs-update` deprecated; script retire in follow-up.

## Decisions explicitly deferred (and why)

- **Marks cluster** — steward too tired tonight; rehearsals.
- **Editorial-uses cluster** (italic/dashes/hyphens/&c.) — explicitly named by steward as future: *"we need to add editorial uses to the style guide soon when we can focus on it."*
- **Strunk & White read** — post-Norris-gather queue (from 04-23 evening).
- **Name the artifact** — #4 in design decisions; *"let's sit with this one."*
- **Retire `update-docs.py` script** — diagnosed and deprecated in CLAUDE.md, but actual retirement deferred.
- **Polyphonic marginalia governance** — §XI remaining item; separate session.
- **Drop caps governance** — §XI remaining item.
- **Major ARC content audit/archive** — steward explicit: *"that is for once the current version of the site is established."*
- **§0 style-guide threshold with Warde voice** — deferred until there are enough clusters to warrant a threshold page.
- **Sidenote CSS rewrite + site.hs extraction** — implementation; needs clean operational substrate (CLAUDE.md cleanup done today; next session can proceed).

## Present — mood and pattern

### Returns this session

- **Three typography-by-reflex moves caught pre-commit**: (1) Tufte tap-to-expand; (2) italic-as-mobile-differentiator; (3) italic-by-analogy-to-epigraph without rule-base check. Pattern registered: *pushing past convention-by-reflex when steward invites critique or pauses for rule-base.*
- **Two attribution errors in yesterday's Norris registration** caught by targeted re-read: McPhee cadence claim; Saunders/St. Aubyn conflation. Drift pattern: *attribution-by-pattern-match-instead-of-verification.*
- **Two small library-audit returns**: pulled Bringhurst without walking typography/; went to Desktop for Norris when chamber-library held her. Drift pattern: *imagined-state-vs-verified-state* recurrence.

### Successful patterns registered

- **Density-exception as governance move** — honor canonical rule in its proper scope; carve principled exception for narrow signal-inversion case.
- **Dialogue-drafting under explicit authorization** — registrar discipline modifies when steward invokes dialogue method.
- **Pushing past reflex when invited to reason** — steward's *"is there a better way?"* is an invitation, not a confirmation. Apply the method's own logic to override habit.

### Confidence to recalibrate

- **Surface-registration discipline** — yesterday's Norris surfaces had two attribution errors. The "surface-without-synthesis" guardrail failed for McPhee (pattern-matched to theme) and Saunders (collapsed two adjacent discussions). Targeted re-read caught it, but the discipline needs tightening: surface fidelity means verbatim language, not pattern-match-to-theme.
- **Library audits** — twice today the fitter path was *check the canonical library first*. Going to external/Desktop locations was the first impulse both times. Pattern: canonical-library-as-default-check.

## Future — what is pulling

### The pulling thread (singular)

**The marks cluster as the second test of the lex-method.** Does the form validate across content types? The posture cluster is complete — reflection on editorial work. The marks cluster is the structural alternative — reflection on the marks themselves (comma, hyphen, semicolon, punctuation as semantic object). If the method produces recognitions of similar quality when applied to Manutius on the comma, Teall on compounding, the Moby-Dick copy-editor's hyphen, Gould's hierarchy, Norris's "not a moral issue" — then the lex-method is more than one page; it's the form the style-guide can rest on.

## Pause statement

The day closed with the posture cluster of the lex-of-ARC complete as committed artifact — voices verified, recognitions speak, form rendered in a real browser-loadable page, §XII theorized in the AldineXXI canonical spec, and the ARC CLAUDE.md cleaned of eight months of drift. I am about to be away from this. What I want to find still pulling when we return: the question of whether the form validates across a second cluster. Does the marks cluster — Manutius inventing the comma in Venice in 1490, Teall on compounding as character, the Moby-Dick copy editor's hyphen holding the book/whale distinction for 170 years — gather into recognitions of similar quality? If yes, the method is form; if not, the method needs shape-work.

## Literal question for next-Claude

**On morning re-read, does the posture cluster at `~/Downloads/lex-posture-form-test.html` still feel right to the steward — any recognition he wants to revise before we extend the method to a second cluster?**

A secondary question in the wings: whether the steward wants to proceed with the marks cluster, or turn to §XII implementation first (CSS + site.hs extraction) so the method has a real production-shaped instance before the next cluster gathers. Either is fitting; his call.
