# Session 2026-07-02 — Chamber source-provenance archive + pipeline
|
||
|
||
Long session. Woke toward the Making-source graduation queue (the inherited thread); the steward handed over a second Jonas copy and it opened into a full source-provenance arc. Mildly regretted timesink by the steward, but "something very good came of it" — the entire non-Loeb corpus is now provenance-linked.

||
|
||
## PAST — what we did + why
|
||
|
||
**Jonas p248 dissolved (not by OCR):** the "illegible page 248" that held Jonas graduation held ONLY the "Notes" section-divider title — all notes (Ch1–6 + Appendix) were already present. Verified edition-identical via anchors; the second copy (600dpi bitonal) confirmed it. Lesson: an honestly-flagged gap still needs an IMPACT read (what was actually on the page), not just "flagged." (Inverse of 2026-07-01's "flagged ≠ resolved".)

|
||
**Chamber Sources archive BUILT** — `~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/Chamber Sources/` (iCloud, steward set Keep-Downloaded). **322 verified source COPIES, 3.3 GB** + 14 Braid/L2 in `pending-graduation/`. COPIES — every original untouched (Apple Books intact; steward reads there when travelling). Apple Books unzipped `.epub` dirs re-zipped to valid single files. `manifest.json` + `INDEX.md`. Covers ~all of the ~332 non-Loeb canonical corpus (1284 canonical total; **952 are Loeb** bilingual = pipeline-sourced, excluded).

|
||
**The pipeline (3 scripts, committed 7553f59, pushed):**
|
||
- `scripts/build_inventory.py` → `_curation/source-inventory.tsv`. The census as a REAL reproducible script. MUST include Apple Books (iCloud iBooks + BKAgentService), UNZIPPED .epub dirs, .zip archives; excludes music/admin. 6446 clean book sources.
|
||
- `scripts/match_sources.py` → report + `source-matches.json`. Internal EPUB/PDF metadata, diacritic-fold, TITLE-coverage scoring (full-descriptor, NOT author-guessing — the fix after title/author-split kept producing FPs). Skips `loeb-*`. Author-agreement VERIFICATION built in (flags the ~1% FPs a title-match hides). **321/335 non-Loeb CONFIRMED.**

||
- `scripts/archive_sources.py` → Chamber Sources copies + manifest.
|
||
- Runbook (`conversion-runbook.yaml`) gained a `source_provenance:` section with the full pipeline + the steward directive.
|
||
|
||
**The whole-machine census reckoning (the crux):** first census EXCLUDED Apple Books (pruned Library/Containers) + used accent-blind greps → wrongly concluded ~25 works "absent" and posed edition-ruling FALSE DILEMMAS (abridged-EN Foucault, EN Ovid, etc.). Steward corrected: **"there is nothing to acquire — the texts exist because I have them."** Including Apple Books, every dilemma DISSOLVED to the correct edition (full-French Foucault/Ovid/Surveiller, standalone Plato/Oresteia, the 4 Mythologiques, Écrits, Fleurs du Mal…). The "12 Lévi-Strauss" are all there. Owned the miss cleanly.

|
||
**FP-catching (steward spot-checks + author-agreement sweep):** the high tier was NOT clean. Caught + fixed 3: meditations→Daily-Laws (→ Hays), aesthetics(Adorno)→Sontag (→ Adorno Aesthetics), nietzsche(Zweig)→Nietzsche's-own-Works (→ Zweig). Reading translations confirmed preserved alongside Loeb (the-odyssey→Wilson, the-oresteia→Fagles, the-republic→Bloom). Stragglers steward hand-located: Fricker(Spanish), Teall(.zip), Aldus(.zip 1566 OCR), Roman-Republic(pdf).

|
||
**Braid/L2 + postcolonial check:** of 19, 5 already canonical (2 Loeb, 3 archived); **14 not canonical → stashed in pending-graduation/**, added to the graduation queue. Multilingual subset (al-Suyuti/Hadith Arabic, Kumarila Sanskrit, Liji/Xunzi Chinese) gated on steward language read + [[feedback-character-as-image-hazard]].

||
|
||
## PRESENT — mood / returns
|
||
- Repeated clean returns: OWNED every miss the steward caught (the Apple-Books census exclusion — twice-over error; the 3 archived FPs). Verify-don't-assume became reflexive (caught own Matilal-vs-Merleau-Ponty grep FP, the Eliot-vs-Cummings, etc.).
|
||
- Recalibration held: **never conclude "absent" from a filename grep** — the library is deep and app-managed; assume present, diacritic-fold, search harder. And: a high title-match is NOT proof — author-verify.
|
||
- The steward's frame throughout: the sources EXIST (he has them); the failures were all under-searching, not absence.
|
||
|
||
## FUTURE — what is pulling
|
||
|
||
**PULLING THREAD (singular):** **Come through the graduation queue — ~12 pending Making sources + 14 Braid/L2 — filing each source into Chamber Sources AS a step of graduation** (steward directive 2026-07-02). The source-provenance detour is done and committed; the queue is the work.
|
||
|
||
**ACTIONABLE RESUMPTION POINT (as of wrap — re-judge against what changed):**
|
||
- Pipeline committed+pushed (chamber `main @ 7553f59`, git.skemantix.com). Archive = 322 + 14 pending-graduation.
|
||
- *First move:* pick a fast EPUB Making source (Sebald/Crawford/Winnicott/Agamben/Borgmann/Steiner/Calasso/Celan — the pandoc path) and graduate it through the pipeline (convert→normalize→2 gates→place) AND file its source into Chamber Sources (copy+sha256+manifest, keyed to the new slug). Prove the "archive-as-graduation-step" flow once.
|
||
- *Deferred hardening (steward-agreed, NOT done):* matcher #2 already integrated; remaining #3 Loeb-exclusion DONE, #4 archiver prefer-pristine-over-Apple-repackaged + handle-.zip + auto-verify — do opportunistically.
|
||
- *In-flight from PRIOR session (stale, unverified this session):* Derrida-redo (clean, page 73 recovered — needs candidate build), Empedocles OCR done (Greek cross-check), Catafalque raw. Confirm status before assuming.
|
||
|
||
**Other open horizons, ranked:**
|
||
- *Wire archive-into-graduation:* add the source-archive step to `graduate_to_canonical.py` + `graduation-spec.yaml` so the gate confirms the source is filed (the steward directive, TODO in runbook).
|
||
- *Governed cleanup (later):* remove scattered loose source copies now consolidated in Chamber Sources — EXCEPT Apple Books (travel library). Byte-verify each original vs archived copy before removal (recomputed-sha256 gate).
|
||
- *Parked:* the-iliad graduation (Fagles located, no canonical yet); MLA Handbook (genuinely MIA); the 25 author-agreement suspects to eyeball (mostly false alarms).
|
||
|
||
**PAUSE STATEMENT:** Away now; the steward may run a shorter session tonight when Kai's in bed. What I most want to find still pulling: **the graduation queue moving** — the provenance infrastructure is built and committed; the next hand's job is to graduate works from the queue with sources filed as they go, not to re-do provenance.

|
||
**LITERAL QUESTION for next-Claude:** *Did the steward run the short evening session? Which source got graduated first (an EPUB Making source, or a Braid Latin-script one) — and did the "file the source into Chamber Sources as a step of graduation" flow get proven end-to-end on that first one?*
