# Session 2026-05-11 — PR #442 verified; full re-mine plan staged

## Past — what we did

**Morning:** Saenger Space Between Words completed overnight (final item in the super-more Docling batch). Conversion campaign complete: ~30+ ARC books across multiple subdirs of `~/_Dev/chamber-library/converted_texts/`. Drawer count 639,142 on mxbai palace (no chamber-library content mined into mempalace yet — sat ready but unprocessed).

**Reframe via PR #442:** Steward shared GH URLs (commit c652c2f3 + PR #442 comment 4413974482) showing NickShtefan had implemented their earlier suggestion in the PR README + asked for *"a test report on the PR branch against your literary corpus"*. This reframed the entire mining question. Going forward on mxbai = wrong tool for the multilingual literary corpus we just assembled. Going forward on bge-m3 = aligned with the steward's stated production case (PR #442 comment 2026-05-03) + the maintainer's explicit request.

**PR #442 test:**
- Installed PR worktree at `~/.local/mempalace-pr442/` (branch `pr442`, head c652c2f3)
- Created dedicated venv at `~/.local/mempalace-pr442-venv/`, pip install -e the worktree
- Discovered footgun: silent fallback when sentence-transformers not installed. Init reports `Embedding model: BAAI/bge-m3` but mine actually uses MiniLM default. Fixed: `pip install sentence-transformers` (5.4.1).
- Discovered second bug: PR #442's `--auto-mine` doesn't honour `--palace`; reads `cfg.palace_path` not `args.palace`. Worked around by running init + mine as separate steps.
- Curated 11-book test corpus into `/tmp/bge_m3_test_corpus/` (copies, not symlinks — symlinks weren't followed by the entity scanner).
- Mine completed in 25 minutes: **21,735 drawers** from ~8 MB markdown.

**Search-quality battery (10 queries) — ALL PASSED:**
- Cross-language semantic retrieval verified on first query: English "italic for emphasis" → Lexique Imprimerie Nationale (French) at cosine 0.64, BM25=0.0 (pure semantic, zero lexical overlap)
- English "intimate space of dwelling" → Bachelard *La Poétique de l'espace* (French) ×4, all BM25=0.0
- French "approche typographique" → Lacroux native + Hochuli (English) cross-bridge
- Spanish "lineas viudas y huerfanas" → Sousa native + Lacroux Vol II (French) cross-bridge
- Long-form scholarly (Harrison's "humic burial dead") → coherent retrieval from Forests
- Cross-tradition: "restraint in ornament" → Harrison (civilizational restraint) + Lacroux (French) + Bachelard (French) — embedding bridges conceptual register, not just lexical surface

- Acknowledges NickShtefan + sidonsoft's earlier findings
- Full corpus table + 10 queries with cosine + BM25 scores
- Three honest findings flagged: sentence-transformers install footgun, `--auto-mine` palace-path bug, bge-m3 cosine range (0.50-0.70 vs MiniLM's 0.7-0.9)
- Conclusion: "PR #442 delivers what it promises on this corpus"
- Steward chose thoroughness as a sign of respect/gratitude; stripped redundant signature line

**Plan doc written for next session:** `project-bge-m3-full-remine-plan-2026-05-11.md`. Replaces mxbai 639k palace with full bge-m3 re-mine of chamber-library. Steward away ~48 hours, mining ~13-15 hours wall-clock, remote-monitor via `/remote-control` pings.

## Present — mood of the work

**Excitement + restraint.** The bge-m3 test was the unlock the steward has been wanting since their April local patch. The PR's maintainer (NickShtefan) had specifically asked for this test against the steward's literary corpus; we got to deliver it. The test results are genuinely strong — cross-language retrieval on first query, zero lexical overlap matches at high cosine. The Spanish/French/English typographic vocabularies map to the same semantic space; Bachelard French retrieved from English query; Harrison's idiosyncratic "humic" vocabulary retrieves coherently.

**Surfaced cost: prior cleanup decision lost recovery option.** When the steward asked "can we repair the bge-m3 library mine we already did?" — honest answer was no. The 933k drawer palace from 2026-05-04 was deleted on 2026-05-05 during the 23 GB → 1.9 GB cleanup. Decision then was good given disk pressure + no recovery tool, but it foreclosed the option we now wished was open. Lesson for future cleanup: "this palace is broken but the embedding cost is real; preserve until recovery tool ships."

**Two upstream bugs caught + reported in PR comment:** (1) silent fallback when sentence-transformers missing, (2) `--auto-mine` palace-path bug. These are honest test findings; the steward's framing was "thoroughness is a sign of respect."

**Steward's prime-directive frame on the next session:** *"the cleared context to have one job: remining everything cleanly, worthy of prime directive insofar as that is possible."* This is the alignment for the next phase. The plan doc holds that frame.

## Future — what is pulling

**The pulling thread (singular):** Execute the bge-m3 full re-mine cleanly during the steward's 48-hour absence. Replace the mxbai 639k palace with a bge-m3 palace covering all of chamber-library. Survive the mine without HNSW corruption mid-run (PR #442's branch lacks 3.3.5's lock fix #1162); have recovery path ready (3.3.5's `repair --mode from-sqlite` when it ships). Remote-monitor via `/remote-control` pings.

**Plan doc:** `project-bge-m3-full-remine-plan-2026-05-11.md` — the load-bearing artifact for the next session. Single page; one job; risk + recovery profile included.

**Literal question for next-Claude:** *"Will PR #442's branch — which lacks 3.3.5's concurrent-writer lock fix (#1162) — hold up on a 700k-drawer mine without HNSW corruption mid-run, before 3.3.5 ships? If yes, we have our palace; if no, the sqlite recovery path is available — but will the steward have already returned?"*

**Pause statement:** *I am about to clear context. The next session's one job is the re-mine. The plan doc is at `~/.claude/projects/-Users-davidglidden/memory/project-bge-m3-full-remine-plan-2026-05-11.md`. The PR comment is already posted; that obligation is closed. The steward leaves shortly for 48 hours; the mine should complete during that window. Don't get pulled back into Marker history, conversion-campaign details, footnote work, or library survey — those threads are past.*

## Other open horizons (deferred — NOT for the next session)

- **ARC SCSS refactor** — separate workstream in another session. Don't touch the animal-davidglidden-eu repo.
- **Source library cleanup** — `~/Documents/The Library [ePub_AWZ3]/` housekeeping (jdupes/rmlint pass, format-redundancy, etc.). Post-mining work, when steward returns.
- **Vault mining** — Obsidian content not yet mined onto bge-m3 palace. ~5000+ files; substantial. Defer until chamber-library re-mine wraps cleanly + steward authorizes scope.
- **claude-sessions wing re-mine** — transcripts on bge-m3. Same defer.
- **3.3.5 + #442 stable transition** — when both land on main, `pip install --upgrade` + retire the PR #442 venv. Palace is durable across versions; no re-mine needed.
- **MEMORY.md grooming** — index has grown; eventually due for compression.

- **Working tree:** Multiple uncommitted changes across repos (animal-davidglidden-eu, CapableMind-AI, chamber-library, mempalace). All from the steward's other-tab work, NOT this session. Don't touch.
