# Session 2026-04-29 — Composition trio shipped + MemPalace 3.3.3 update

## Shape of the session

Long, productive, two distinct arcs:

1. **Composition arc (morning through afternoon)** — the pulling thread inherited from 2026-04-28 (Hearth landing prose + About *Hic* + About *Adsum*) landed end-to-end. Hearth opened with steward's morning verbatim *"the hearth is the crucible — the lares from which I am made."* Composed in dialogue across the day. Plus apparatus invention (body-block §XII.d) emerging from real need on the lares sidenote. Plus Annals rename (steward observation that Archive sat oddly in ARC's grammar). Plus bio Jekyll-strip (the third deferred thing).

2. **MemPalace arc (late afternoon, after lunch)** — pulled the 502-commit-behind repo (steward had self-flagged this on 2026-04-26 as a future focused session). Updated venv. Surveyed CHANGELOG. Ran init on chamber-library — produced bad output. Wrap point: deciding cleanup approach.

The pulling thread for tomorrow is the MemPalace cleanup. The composition trio is done.

## Past — what we did

### Composition arc

**Hearth landing** at `/lares/index.md` — composed in dialogue from morning gather (substrate file `project-hearth-composition-substrate.md`). Subtitle preserved from stub. Steward's morning verbatim folded in (*"They are the substance from which I am made"*). Four-line posture displayed (vigilance/attention/form/meaning without their failure modes). Sidenote on *lares* (lares/penates/manes apposition + Harrison's *infrastructure* frame + *visited not cited* closing). Bachelard, Harrison, Alexander all unnamed (form-content unity). Closing line revised from *"That is not failure but fidelity"* (announced antithesis caught) to *"The record will grow as the household is kept"* (image-led continuative). ~165 words + 75-word sidenote.

**Body-block apparatus (§XII.d)** invented when the lares sidenote created visible whitespace under the anchor paragraph. Three iterations:
1. Nested grid (mirroring voice-block) — left whitespace below shorter body when sidenote was taller
2. Position absolute — sidenote sat slightly low
3. + `margin: 0` override on absolute — final landing

Spec note added to `docs/AldineXXI-Codex/AldineXXI-specification.md` as §XII.d with full source rationale, treatment, distinction-from-neighboring-forms table, and three-iteration history. Steward chose name *body-block* (over `:::gloss`) due to conflict with existing Gloss content type.

**Sidenote mobile-scope refactor** — base `.sidenote` rule's stacked-spacing scoped to `@include not-desktop` only. New mixin `@mixin not-desktop` and query `$on-not-desktop` introduced in `_mixins.scss` and `_variables.scss`. Eliminates need for explicit `margin: 0` overrides in every desktop sidenote context (voice-block kept its intentional 1.5rem; direct desktop sidenote and body-block keep theirs as defensive zero-setters).

**Hic + Adsum threshold** at `/about/` — single page, two register-marks (steward design call: not two pages). Composition path: started with two-page draft → restructured per steward's *"single page containing both, hic and adsum as left hand register marks. Hic first absolutely."* Tabula rasa rewrite (steward verbatim: *"this deserves a clean start retaining few appropriate elements at first and, if appropriate, adding things later rather than having to subtract"*). Stevens's jar dwells unnamed (form-content principle). Bare translation *"The animal capable of rationality"* on Hic; full Swift amendment + *"This phrase rescued me"* stays on Colophon (formative-laral register). David Glidden links to /bio/. Email `letters@animalrationiscapax.org` (ARC's own correspondence address). Class changed essay→lex (needed for §XII grid).

**Steward's substantive prose revisions:**
- *"writing that earns its attention"* (sharper than my *asks attention slowly*)
- *"a violist, and, here, a writer"* — commas isolating *here*, doing the same deictic work the *Hic* register-mark above does (steward observation: *"the here in commas recalls the hic"*)

**Three render bugs caught and fixed via visual inspection on deploy:**
- `<article class="about-page">` not in §XII grid SCSS selectors → added "about" class (template now `<article class="about-page about">`)
- About appeared in its own enfilade strip → filtered `enfilade-order: 0` from `collectEnfiladeIds` in site.hs
- `<div class="about-body">` wrapper made register-marks grandchildren of article.about (selector `> .register-mark` didn't match) → removed the wrapper (now matches lex.html's body-as-direct-child structure)

**Annals rename from Archive** — steward observation: *"the Archive compass point is, in a way, the doorway to everything. Maybe it needs a different name?"* Three candidates considered (Annals · The Gathering · The Years). Steward chose **Annals** — Latin classical register matching Hearth/Hic/Adsum/Colophon. URL change `/archive.html` → `/annals.html` with CloudFlare 301 redirects via `static/_redirects`. Glyph ☷ K'un Earth retained. All template links updated (default.html, frontispiece.html, home.html, post-list.html, footer-compass/chamber/about). Description: *"The years gathered, in order."*

**Bio Jekyll-strip** — at `/bio/`. Jekyll legacy was breaking the page so only the photo rendered. Removed: `{% include language-toggle.html %}` (Liquid), `markdown="1"` Kramdown attributes, three `<div id="X" class="lang-content">` wrappers, photo `<img>` (and source file `static/images/dfg.jpg` deleted). Added: `*Pilgrim.*` italic subtitle, language-as-h2 sections (English/Français/Castellano) separated by `---` rules, existing per-language section h2s demoted to h3/h4. Title "About David" → "David Glidden". Prose preserved verbatim per steward direction: *"This needs a serious rewrite, but, for now, I'd like the text as it stands."* Deferred prose rewrite is its own session.

**Source-repo housekeeping (4 commits, pushed to origin+github-backup):**

### MemPalace arc (after lunch)

**Pulled both repos** — BMF already up-to-date (on test/164 branch); mempalace fast-forwarded `71736a3..94f1689` (502 commits caught up). New plugin scaffolding in `.claude-plugin/` (slash commands, hooks, skills, MCP config), many new branches fetched.

**Surveyed CHANGELOG (3.3.1, 3.3.2, 3.3.3):**
- Per-project diary scoping fix (#659, #1145) — diary entries from different projects no longer collapse into shared default wing
- Deterministic save hook (#673) — silent Python API path
- `mempalace_search`/`diary_read` empty-string-as-no-filter (#1097, #1084)
- `init --llm` for entity classification (#1150) — defaults to Ollama, supports OpenAI-compatible + Anthropic
- Claude Code conversation scanner (#1150) — `~/.claude/projects/<slug>/` parsed via session cwd
- Init→miner wire-up (#1157) — confirmed entities merge into `~/.mempalace/known_entities.json`
- Plugin scaffolding — slash commands `/help`, `/init`, `/mine`, `/search`, `/status`; hooks for stop + precompact; skill at `mempalace/SKILL.md`; MCP config

**Updated venv** (it's editable-installed via `_mempalace.pth`):
- mempalace 3.0.0 → 3.3.3
- chromadb 0.6.3 → 1.5.8 (major upgrade; quarantine_stale_hnsw fix anticipates this transition)
- New deps: pydantic-settings, jsonschema-specifications, referencing, rpds-py, attrs (newer)

**Pulled `gemma4:e4b` Ollama model** — initial DNS timeout, succeeded on retry. Steward had cm-david:v2 + cm-keystone-ranking variants but those are bespoke; gemma4:e4b is the init default.

**Ran `mempalace init . --yes` on chamber-library** (no LLM first, baseline):
- 13 PEOPLE detected — mostly noise (Design, Typography, Book, Art, Printing, Books, Graphic, Berlin, Form, Real). Only David F Glidden (from git), and possibly Gutenberg (Johannes) and Jan (Jan Tschichold) are real
- 1 PROJECT — chamber-library ✓
- 6 rooms detected from folder structure (scripts, observer_problem_sources, derrida, jaccottet:handke:lichtenberg, converted_texts, general)
- 479 files registered
- Wing: `chamber_library`
- Files written: `mempalace.yaml`, `entities.json` (auto-added to .gitignore)
- `~/.mempalace/known_entities.json` registry updated

**Ran `mempalace init . --llm --yes` on chamber-library** (with LLM refinement):
- Same 13 noise auto-accepted (LLM did NOT reclassify auto-accepted candidates)
- LLM surfaced 8 UNCERTAIN candidates: Bringhurst (16x), Tschichold (12x), Erik (11x), Spiekermann (11x) — all real typographers — plus Robert (1x), Scripts, Complete, Copyright (noise)
- **Critical finding:** `--yes` mode auto-accepts the regex output but does NOT promote UNCERTAIN candidates. So the real LLM-surfaced names didn't get into entities.json. Saved output is noisy and missing the actual signal.

**Saved files current state:**
- `chamber-library/entities.json` — 13 noise-heavy people + chamber-library project
- `~/.mempalace/known_entities.json` — same 13 noise + chamber-library
- The miner reads known_entities.json to tag drawers; running `mempalace mine` now would tag drawers with "Design," "Typography," "Book," etc. as PEOPLE (wrong)

**Wrap point:** decided not to run `mine` until entity registry is cleaned. Two options on table:
- **Option A** — manually edit known_entities.json + entities.json: drop noise, promote LLM's UNCERTAIN reals (Bringhurst, Tschichold, Spiekermann, Erik), add canonical chamber-library figures (Bachelard, Harrison, Berger, Heidegger, Vico, Leopardi, Sennett, Alexander, Manutius, Norris, Derrida, Pope Sixtus V) after grep-verification
- **Option B** — re-run init interactively in steward's terminal (no `--yes`) so he sees and confirms each candidate live; would surface UNCERTAIN candidates for promotion

I lean Option A (faster, since LLM doesn't independently surface most canonicals — UNCERTAIN had only 4 reals). Steward had not chosen at session-end.

## Decisions made + rationale

### Composition decisions

- **Body-block over reusing voice-block** — semantic correctness; voice-block name implies quote-source, body-block is body+gloss. Adding a properly-named pattern matches §XII architecture where each apparatus has distinct semantic name (preface §XII.c, register-marks §XII.b, body-block §XII.d).
- **Absolute positioning over nested grid for body-block** — anchor paragraphs and sidenote glosses often differ sharply in length; nested grid makes row height = max(body, sidenote), creating whitespace in shorter column. Absolute keeps body-block height = body content; sidenote may extend into following rows' empty right-margin, bridging visually while anchoring at top.
- **Annals over The Years/The Gathering** — Latin classical register matches Hearth/Hic/Adsum/Colophon lineage. Literally answers *"what happened in the years."* Steward call.
- **Swift on Colophon, bare translation on Hic** — Swift's amendment is doing formative-laral work on Colophon (*"This phrase rescued me"*); moving it would gut Colophon's opening. But threshold needs name's meaning for hospitality. Third path: bring just the bare translation (*"The animal capable of rationality"*) to Hic; full attribution + formative-rescue stays on Colophon.
- **Stevens jar dwells unnamed on Hic** — same form-content principle as Hearth's Bachelard/Harrison/Alexander unnamed. The page IS the placing-act; doesn't need to point at the figure that named it.
- **Class essay→lex on About** — needed for §XII grid SCSS to apply. Triggers wider wrapper, register-mark column, sidenote support.
- **Adsum capitalized** (matching Hic) — Bringhurst/Aldine convention; lowercase fights apparatus convention.
- **Mobile-scope SCSS refactor done now** rather than deferred — small touch (3 file edits); cleaner pattern for future SCSS work; documentation (§XII.d follow-up note) updated.

### MemPalace decisions

- **Update venv editably first**, then plan MCP restart (deferred) — minimizes session disruption. Steward needs to restart MCP himself; we'd lose MCP tools mid-session otherwise.
- **`init` without `--llm` first** to establish baseline — tabula rasa applied. Showed regex was indeed noisy on prose-heavy folder.
- **`init --llm --yes` second pass** — but this didn't refine the 13 noise candidates; only surfaced UNCERTAIN ones that `--yes` didn't promote. Lesson: `--yes` is wrong default for first init on a new prose-heavy folder.
- **Don't run `mine` yet** — registry pollution risk; wait for cleanup.

### Decisions explicitly NOT made

- **First Gloss publication** — held for tomorrow per steward: *"I don't feel pressure—this shape shouldn't be hard to find."* First Gloss in ARC's history deserves fresh attention. Substrate captured in `project-first-gloss-berger-held-for-tomorrow.md`.
- **Bio prose serious rewrite** — explicit deferral: *"This needs a serious rewrite, but, for now, I'd like the text as it stands."* Today was structural fix only.
- **MCP server restart** — deferred. Steward to restart at end of session (or whenever convenient) so next session uses 3.3.3 + chromadb 1.5.8 + new logic.
- **Per-project diary scoping verification** — depends on MCP restart. Currently the running MCP is still 3.0.0; today's diary writes still use shared agent-keyed wings (not project-keyed).
- **MemPalace chamber-library entity cleanup** — Option A vs Option B vs third path; not chosen at session-end. **This is the pulling thread.**
- **Run `mine` on chamber-library** — blocked until entity registry is clean.
- **Init on Obsidian vault** — same logic; deferred.
- **`/wake-up` and `/wrap-up` skill revisits** — flagged on 2026-04-26 as future work; not done today.
- **MemPalace mid-session protocol design** — flagged 2026-04-26; not done today.

## Present — mood, returns, recalibrations

### Returns

- **Architectural drift caught and corrected three times** (article.about-page mismatch, enfilade-order filter missing, about-body wrapper) — visual-inspection-on-deploy is the working discipline; works because deploys auto-deploy.
- **Body-block apparatus iteration** — 3 attempts to land. Initial nested grid was wrong shape for the actual layout problem. Position absolute + margin: 0 was the correct shape. Lesson: when the visual doesn't match the model, the model is wrong, not the visual.
- **Antithesis caught** — *"That is not failure but fidelity"* flagged by steward as too announced; replaced with image-led continuative *"The record will grow as the household is kept."* Saved as `feedback-composition-avoid-announced-antithesis.md`.
- **Tabula rasa discipline lived end-to-end** on Hic+Adsum — about.md went from many hundreds of words to ~110. Saved as feedback memory after earlier mid-flight denial; now visible in practice.
- **Naming conflict** caught — gloss apparatus would conflict with existing Gloss content type. Chose body-block for symmetry with voice-block.
- **MemPalace `--yes` mode lesson** — auto-accepts noise from regex; UNCERTAIN bucket (where LLM-refined real signal lives) NOT promoted. Wrong default for first init on prose-heavy folder.

### Successful patterns

- **Visual-inspection-on-deploy** caught the architectural drift bugs immediately
- **Tabula rasa applied to bio** preserved structural fix without scope creep into prose rewrite
- **Substantive prose revisions in dialogue** (steward sharpening *asks* → *earns*, commas isolating *here*) — the kind of editing only steward can do
- **Form-content unity test** on Hearth (Bachelard/Harrison/Alexander unnamed) and Hic (Stevens unnamed) — the pages enact what they speak of
- **Body-block iteration grounded by visual evidence** — each attempt produced a different visual; the visual told us when we'd landed

### Confidence to recalibrate

- **The session was long.** The composition arc was the inheritable thread; the MemPalace arc was bonus that produced a half-result. Don't over-invest in MemPalace tomorrow if the steward's energy is needed for the first Gloss.
- **The chamber-library entity registry is currently polluted.** Don't run `mine` until cleaned. This is a real constraint for any "mempalace mine" call tomorrow.
- **Today's diary entries** all use the OLD wing logic (shared agent-keyed wing, not project-keyed). After MCP restart, future writes will use new logic. The wrap-up's diary write is the LAST entry in the old logic.

## Future — what is pulling

### The pulling thread (singular)

**The chamber-library entity registry cleanup — Option A vs Option B vs a third path.** This is the explicit unresolved decision at session-end. The current state is `known_entities.json` polluted with 13 noise entries (Design, Typography, Book, etc. as "people"). Real signals (Bringhurst, Tschichold, Spiekermann, Bachelard, Harrison, Berger…) are missing. Running `mempalace mine` would tag drawers wrong.

Tomorrow opens here. The decision shape:
- **A** = manual JSON edit (faster, ~5-10 min, executor drives, steward reviews list)
- **B** = interactive re-run of `mempalace init . --llm` in steward's terminal (slower, ~15-30 min, steward confirms live)
- **Third path** = the just-pulled `.claude-plugin/` slash commands might offer `/init` from inside Claude Code — could be a different surface entirely. Worth exploring before defaulting to A or B.

I am about to be away from this. The composition trio inherited from 2026-04-28 has fully shipped — Hearth, Hic+Adsum, body-block apparatus, Annals rename, bio Jekyll-strip. Four commits pushed to gitea + GitHub backup. Five durable feedback/user/project memories saved. The MemPalace work is mid-flight: 3.0.0 → 3.3.3 done, but the chamber-library init produced bad output that needs cleanup before any `mine` runs. The first Gloss is held for tomorrow with substrate captured.

The thread I want to find still pulling: **the chamber-library entity cleanup decision.** A vs B vs third path. The MemPalace runtime is poised between old (still-running 3.0.0 MCP) and new (just-installed 3.3.3 venv). The cleanup is what unblocks `mine`, which unblocks tagged-drawer ingestion of chamber-library, which is the high-leverage outcome the steward was after.
