The architecture of ARC is **Alexandrian: beautiful, strong, generative, alive.** Building upon potential directions requires the foundation be clean and well-made. The chamber is that foundation.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
The chamber-library isn't a corpus to be processed; it's a **substrate the steward thinks against.** Each voice that enters degraded becomes a future retrieval that returns degraded source. Compounded across 600+ files and the years ahead, this is foundation cracking. Christopher Alexander's *quality without a name* — the property that makes a building alive — comes from many small decisions made carefully. Same for the chamber.

|
**How to apply:**
|
|
|
|
- **Cleanup is per-file craft, not batch processing.** The category-aware cleanup script is the right *instrument*. But running it across 47 files in one pass without per-file inspection is the throughput posture. Discipline: cleanup → audit-after → spot-check content samples → file. For each file. Slower; foundation holds.
|
|
- **Reconversion is conversion craft per text.** Each unmined RECONVERT file is a specific voice with specific apparatus (footnotes, marginalia, language markers, chapter structure). Choose tool, flags, and review level per text. Treating them all the same is the failure mode.
|
|
- **"Priority subset for ARC" frames *sequencing*, not *standard*.** Which voices come first depends on what work they unlock (AldineXXI rewrite, attention page, etc.). But the quality bar applied to those first ones must be the same applied to the last ones.
|
|
- **No "good enough" for the chamber.** The framing the steward catches and corrects: "as good as possible for readers" is a milestone, not a quality threshold. The chamber is built to the prime-directive standard or it isn't built.
|
|
- **When in doubt, slow down.** *Do things once, correctly, with lasting integrity. Choose what is proportionate, fitting, and durable. Build what you will not need to rebuild.* These aren't decorative; they're the test.
|
|
|
|
**The contamination-aware reading:** Triage and sequencing are real tools that serve order-of-operations. But the urge to *finish quickly* — to drain the queue, to mark items done — is contamination-adjacent. The chamber's value is in what it teaches; what it teaches depends on what's in it; what's in it depends on the care taken in admitting each voice. There is no shortcut that doesn't show up later as degraded foundation.

**Reference frame:** Alexander's *Nature of Order* (4 vols) + *Timeless Way of Building* + *Pattern Language* — all currently in chamber-library, partially mined. The methodology these books describe (small careful decisions cumulating into living wholes) applies to chamber curation as a direct analogue.
