name: Session 2026-04-30 evening through 2026-05-01 morning — ARC publications shipped + flamenco substrate disclosed + MemPalace bge-m3 transition paused for MPS in fresh session
description: Long cross-day session (~16+ hrs spread). Three arcs. Arc 1: post-power-failure recovery from disk transcripts. Arc 2: ARC publications — first Gloss (Berger) + Atom feed + bio rewrite woven through 8 foundational voices + flamenco-substrate disclosure with reverent homecoming acknowledgment + /resume/ → /cv/ rename, all deployed (4 commits 4 ahead of origin). Arc 3: MemPalace bge-m3 mine on CPU projected 4-5 days; paused mid-flight for fresh session to switch to MPS. BMF L1 pathology surfaced (1,349 index segments — fresh, not issue #10). Pulling thread = 5-step MPS resume plan in project-mempalace-mps-transition-pending.md.

# Session 2026-04-30 evening → 2026-05-01 morning
This session opened by recovering from a power failure that killed the previous session at 14:10:20 UTC on 2026-04-30 mid-bio-investigation. It wrapped Friday 2026-05-01 ~10:30 Barcelona, mid-MemPalace transition, deliberately paused for a fresh session to finish under cleaner context.
---
## Past — what we did, and why
### Arc 1 — Recovery from the power failure (2026-04-30 evening)
- **MemPalace MCP "connected but every tool call fails"** — diagnosed as fallout from the 217 GB corrupted HNSW index in `~/.mempalace/palace/c44f8fd1-.../link_lists.bin`. Root cause: bge-m3 mine running at power-cut moment left ChromaDB's HNSW graph index in runaway-allocation state.
- **State recovery from on-disk transcripts** — read the killed session's `.jsonl` log (PID 76660 process trace in 16:10 transcript) to recover what was in flight: gloss finalization → RSS investigation → bio rewrite queued. Last assistant text was truncated mid-sentence about RSS.
- **Architectural finding from recovery**: the steward's "doors not feeds" was navigation grammar (no homepage timeline), NOT a refusal of syndication. Recovered Atom feed work + clarified posture.
### Arc 2 — ARC publications (deployed live; 4 commits)
All four commits are on `main`, deployed to CloudFlare + GitHub mirror. Branch is **4 commits ahead of `origin` (Gitea)** — push not yet authorized.
- `1554e50` **First Gloss in ARC's history — Berger / *Ways of Seeing* p.21.** Display option (2): apparatus locator above the blockquote in IBM Plex Mono muted. Form: *"Author · *Work*, locator"* (middot separator avoids comma overload of "Author, Work, p. N"). Steward's gloss extends Berger's relic-logic argument to string instruments — the through-line of *use-without-decay-as-metaphysics* later surfaced in the bio. Files: `content/posts/2026-04-29-on-berger-ways-of-seeing-p21.md`, `scss/AldineXXI/_gloss-source.scss`, `scss/main.scss`.
- `e5806b1` **Atom feed — auto-discovery only.** Honors *doors-rather-than-a-feed* posture by being a knock at the door, not a feature: published at `/feed.atom`; no UI link; auto-discoverable via `<link rel="alternate">` in `default.html` and `frontispiece.html`. `feedExcerpt` strips `<blockquote>` and `<div>` blocks before tag-stripping so summaries reflect post's prose voice not apparatus or quoted material. Per-post `description:` frontmatter overrides auto-excerpt. 20 most recent posts; prior versions excluded.
- `2a19d07` **Bio rewrite published (English-only).** Steward's draft rewoven through the eight foundational voices in `/colophon/` (Alexander, Bachelard, Berger, Sennett — the Guides; Vico, Leopardi, Harrison, Heidegger — the Formation). Three weavings:
- ¶3 Sennett moment: *"the bow listening for what the string will permit, the sentence for what the meaning is asking"* — the viola appears in grain, not only as title.
- ¶4 instrument-relic through-line: *"On what an instrument keeps and what it can lose."* — surfaces the metaphysics that connects HIP, pedagogy, AGI position, and the just-shipped Berger gloss.
- ¶5 Alexander yielding: *"I have been building"* (was *"I built"*) — progressive aspect carries Alexander's *"what wants to grow"* without losing agency.
- ¶1 reverent two-sentence coda after the flamenco substrate disclosure: *"What made the work possible was given before training, in a music that came to me as family. The life it has become, in Spain, has the form of a homecoming."* — passive *given*, *came to me as family* (no scare quotes; bio asserts the relation), *form of a homecoming* (steward's own word). Names + childhood specifics held private.
- *Animal Rationis Capax* italicized + Title Case in publication-naming context (¶4, ¶5). Colophon's lowercase Latin treatment is for citing Swift's coinage — different grammatical role; both registers correctly coexist.
- *Pilgrim* italic subtitle hidden — *"the words show that to an attentive reader anyway"* (steward).
- Multi-language structure (French/Castellano) deferred until ARC's multi-language content spec is written (steward: translation comparatively easy when the time comes).
- `3d5775c` **`/resume/` → `/cv/` rename with steward's professional viola CV.** The stale `resume.md` (last touched July 2025) was marketing-register and missing Education / Pedagogical Lineage / Languages / Contact sections. Replaced with the steward's current professional CV. URL change matches steward's term + European convention. `/resume/` and `/resume.html` 301-redirect to `/cv/` via `static/_redirects`. Bio's apparatus-register trailing line links to `/cv/`.
### Arc 3 — MemPalace bge-m3 transition (paused mid-flight)
- **bge-m3 patch applied 2026-04-30 afternoon** (lines 26-46 of `chroma.py`): multilingual 1024-dim embedding to handle chamber-library's heavy French + German content alongside English. Replaced ChromaDB default `all-MiniLM-L6-v2`.
- **Chamber-library mine started 2026-04-30 ~22:50** scoped to `converted_texts/` only (`scripts/` excluded per steward 2026-05-01 "they are stale"); `--wing chamber_library` explicit so the wing name doesn't default to directory name.
- **Morning check 2026-05-01 ~08:00 surfaced three problems:**
1. **Mine pace catastrophic on CPU**: 30 of 371 files in 9 hours; bge-m3 1024-dim is genuinely slow on CPU; large texts (Le Guin's *Dispossessed* → 1,194 drawers; Derrida's *Écrits* → 3,556 drawers) compound the rate problem; projected 4-5 days at this pace.
2. **Unauthorized parallel mine** (PID 9232) — Stop hook in `settings.json` had auto-fired `mempal_save_hook.sh` which started a SECOND `mempalace mine` on `~/.claude/projects/-Users-davidglidden/` (Phase 4c work, but unauthorized for tonight). Both mines competed for CPU + bge-m3 model memory + palace database. Killed cleanly.
3. **BMF service at 224% CPU for 14+ hours** (PID 1043) — investigation revealed the BMF lance store has accumulated **1,349 index segments** with **25,449+ transactions** in `~/.capablemind/data/mindfabric-00/lance/vector_chunks.lance/_indices/`. Healthy Lance stores have 1-10 segments. Read-amplification scales with segment count; every query reads all 1,349. Fresh L1 pathology — **NOT issue #10** which steward confirmed was resolved long ago. Belongs to a deliberate L1 audit session w/ Seb. Killed BMF.
- **Plan formed for fresh session: bge-m3 + MPS (Apple Silicon Metal GPU acceleration).** Same model (multilingual quality non-negotiable for the critical French + German texts), runs on Metal cores instead of CPU, ~5-10x speedup expected for 1024-dim transformer embedding work. Frees CPU for everything else; cooling improves. Five-step resume plan documented in `project-mempalace-mps-transition-pending.md`.
- **Pause-point state (2026-05-01 ~10:30):**
- Chamber mine killed ✓ (was at 30/371)
- BMF killed ✓
- Palace wiped to 168 KB skeleton ✓ (`palace.pre-bge-m3-2026-04-30` 956 MB and `palace.crashed-2026-04-30` 141 MB sqlite preserved)
- `chroma.py` bge-m3 patch in place; needs ONE additional line: `device="mps"`
- Global `~/.mempalace/known_entities.json` clean (canonical 21-person list)
- Per-repo `chamber-library/entities.json` still noisy from yesterday's `init --llm --yes` but mining doesn't read that file (verified)
### Memory captured this session
- `project-mempalace-mps-transition-pending.md` — the resume plan + BMF audit thread + decisions locked
- `project-bio-rewrite-pending-multilanguage-spec.md` — updated to reflect deployed status (English live; multi-language pending)
- `user-formation-flamenco-substrate.md` (new) — the flamenco family-of-origin disclosure with strict discretion: names of flamenco-family-friends + childhood specifics + ABG/Moy + dates all PRIVATE; bio surfaces only *"a music that came to me as family"* + *"the form of a homecoming"*
---
## Present — the mood of the work
### Tensions surfaced and how we returned
- **Two attribution-by-pattern-match drifts in close succession.** Called *"trusted member of Savall's artistic leadership circle"* (in stale `resume.md`) over-claiming — was actually true, just register-wrong. Then called the flamenco mention in same file a fabrication — was true biography. Both errors were importing plausible characterization (clean up the stale page) instead of checking each claim's truth value. Steward corrected with the gift of fuller disclosure (the flamenco substrate); I made the corrections explicitly without performing contrition (per the trust-contract feedback memory).
- **Calendar error**: said "Sunday morning" when it was Friday May 1. Steward corrected directly. No excuse.
- **Issue-#10 import drift**: surfaced #10 as relevant to BMF's pathology when steward immediately corrected — *"BMF issue #10 was resolved ages ago."* This is the *importing-plausible-context-instead-of-checking-actual* pattern (already in KG drift list). The 1,349-segment + 25k-transaction state IS a fresh pathology; the framing as "the issue you've been tracking" was wrong.
- **Multiple pace estimate revisions for the chamber mine** — 30-45 min → 2-3 hrs → 12-24 hrs → 4-5 days as data came in. Should have proposed MPS from the start; the CPU choice was a default-not-a-decision.
### Returns inherited from yesterday's ledger (2026-04-30)
- Yesterday's pulling thread was chamber-library entity cleanup A/B/third-path. **Resolved this session** — global `~/.mempalace/known_entities.json` was already cleaned (21 canonical people); per-repo file still noisy but mining doesn't use it. The decision question became moot.
- Yesterday's recalibration *"don't over-invest in MemPalace if steward's energy belongs to writing"* — partly honored (composition arc shipped ARC publications), partly not (today's morning hours were eaten by MemPalace troubleshooting that should have been an MPS decision from the start).
### What felt load-bearing vs deferred-with-reason
**Load-bearing this session:**
- The flamenco-substrate disclosure and the reverent acknowledgment in ¶1 of the bio. The substrate was the answer to the *"voiceful but placeless"* read I had given the bio earlier. The *homecoming* framing dissolved the placelessness as substrate, not absence.
- The gloss publication form-content-unity test passed. ARC's first Gloss is a clean instantiation of the Gloss content-type in AldineXXI — the apparatus does what it should without over-decoration.
- The bge-m3 + MPS plan is the right shape. Quality preserved; speed tractable; one tiny code edit.
**Deferred-with-reason:**
- BMF L1 audit (1,349 index segments) — needs steward + Seb in a focused session.
- Push to origin (4 commits) — steward's call when ready.
- Sub-room granularity within `chamber_library` wing (`collections`, `dialogues`, `indices`, `traditions`) — can be added via proper `mempalace.yaml` + re-roomification later without re-embedding.
- Phase 4b/c/d (Obsidian vault, transcripts, CapableMind thinking docs re-mining) — sequential overnight runs after chamber-library completes.
- ARC multi-language content spec — separate workstream; bio re-translation lives downstream.
---
## Future — what is pulling
### The pulling thread (singular)
**Apply `device="mps"` to `chroma.py` and restart the chamber-library mine on Metal.** Five steps from "open a fresh session" to "mine running on Metal." Everything else (palace state, kills, scope decisions, model decision) is already done. The whole MemPalace bge-m3 transition resolves on this one edit + verification.
### Other open horizons, ranked
1. **Push the 4 ARC commits to origin** when steward gives the call (`git push origin main && git push github-backup main`). Site is already deployed via CloudFlare; this is for source-of-truth integrity at Gitea.
2. **BMF L1 audit** — 1,349 index segments + 25k transactions; fresh pathology (NOT issue #10); needs a deliberate session with Seb. Reference the prior L1 audit material in `~/_Dev/CapableMind-AI/docs/thinking/David/l1-reliability/`.
3. **Phase 4b/c/d wing re-mining** — sequential overnight runs after chamber-library completes under MPS. Order is steward's call.
4. **ARC multi-language content spec** — when the spec lands, the bio's French + Castellano translations return alongside any other multilingual ARC content; the English text is preserved verbatim for re-translation reference in `project-bio-rewrite-pending-multilanguage-spec.md`.
5. **Sub-room granularity for chamber_library** — write a proper `mempalace.yaml` for `converted_texts/` to surface `collections / dialogues / indices / traditions` as separate rooms. No re-embedding required; just re-roomification.
### Pause statement
I am about to be away from this. The MemPalace transition is mid-flight, paused deliberately so it can finish in a clean session. The state on disk is consistent and recoverable — palace skeleton, killed processes, project memory file with the resume plan. The thing I want to find still pulling when next-Claude arrives is the **MPS edit + restart**, in that order, with a pause after the sanity test to see whether the speedup hypothesis holds.
### The literal question for next-Claude
**Does the chamber-library mine actually CPU-bound such that MPS will deliver the projected 5-10x speedup, or is there a different bottleneck (memory bandwidth, ChromaDB write throughput, model serialization across the chunk → embed → write loop) that MPS won't address?**
The sanity test in step 3 of the resume plan (load bge-m3 on MPS, embed 3 sentences, verify shape + timing) only tests the embedding-call path. The full mine throughput depends on the whole pipeline. Hold the question open through the first 30-60 minutes of the actual mine; if file rate at MPS is materially better than 3.3/hr, the hypothesis is confirmed; if it's only marginally better, the bottleneck is downstream and the strategy needs revisiting.
---
## Drift patterns to register (for future drift-pattern KG entries)
- *attribution-by-pattern-match-instead-of-verification* — added two more instances (Savall-circle "over-claim" misread; flamenco "fabrication" misread). Pattern is well-known; instances accumulate.
- *importing-plausible-context-instead-of-checking-actual* — issue #10 invocation when it was resolved. Steward 2026-04-21 lineage of this pattern matches.
- *default-not-a-decision* — proposed bge-m3 on CPU without surfacing MPS as an option. Cost: 9 hours CPU mining at 30/371. Mitigation: when proposing a long-running compute task on Apple Silicon, MPS should be a first-thought question, not an afterthought.

## What was NOT captured to MemPalace this session
The /wrap-up skill prescribes drawer + diary writes to MemPalace. Skipped this time because:
- MemPalace MCP server is not connected (palace just wiped to skeleton; MCP server would start cleanly but writing wrap-up content to a skeleton palace that's about to be re-mined is wasted work — the drawer would be the first content in the new palace, which is fine architecturally but adds friction to the resume).
- The fresh session can re-write this session's record to MemPalace once chamber-library mining begins and MCP harness is reconnected.
- File-based session memory + MEMORY.md index are sufficient for next-Claude to find this and orient.
Honest disposition: file-based capture is complete; MemPalace surfaces will be filled when the system is back to steady state.
