# Session 2026-05-01 morning → 2026-05-02 afternoon
|
||
|
||
Cross-day session, ~30 hours of conversation across two days while the chamber-library mine ran autonomously in background (started 10:46 day 1; at wrap 14:42 day 2 = 1d 4h elapsed, 276/371 files, 501,565 drawers, ~19,000 drawers/hr cumulative, 19-26 hrs to projected completion). MemPalace MCP remained disconnected the entire session; all MemPalace-dependent work held per steward discipline.

## Past — what we did, and why
|
||
|
||
### Day 1 morning — MPS resume + substrate cleanup (~10:43-11:00)
|
||
|
||
- `/wake-up` at 10:41 (10 min after previous session's wrap). At step "verify state" (per inherited 5-step MPS resume plan), caught **PID 26658** — Stop-hook-spawned `mempalace mine` running on transcripts (CPU, wrong corpus). Same auto-spawn mechanism the previous session had killed. Surfaced before the resume plan execution. Pattern logged: would have been *importing-the-resume-plan-instead-of-checking-actual-state* if not caught.
|
||
- Steward authorized; killed PID 26658 + removed the Stop hook entirely from `~/.claude/settings.json` (read the hook's mechanism — fires every 15 user messages, spawns `mempalace mine $TRANSCRIPT_DIR &` — so removing was the only safe path during a long mine). Restored palace from `palace.skeleton-backup-2026-04-30` (back to 164K). Steward independently disabled BMF (cm-hook competition removed).

- Applied the `device="mps"` patch to `chroma.py` `_mempalace_embedding_fn()`. MPS sanity test passed: `torch.backends.mps.is_available()` True, bge-m3 load 10.4s, embed-3-multilingual 3.37s (first-call MPS-kernel JIT cost), dim=1024 correct.

### Day 1 afternoon — ARC compositional arc (~11:00-22:00)
|
||
|
||
- **Pushed 4 prior ARC commits** to both remotes (Gitea origin + GitHub-backup) at `3d5775c` — clearing the 4-commits-ahead state from previous session. Both remotes now in sync.
|
||
- **After the Reply state-mismatch corrected.** Memory said "data layer ready, visual layer empty" for the sequence-indication system; reality was *fully implemented* (5 essays published, marker apparatus rendering at `templates/post.html:41-46`, sequence-index page at `/essays/after-the-reply/`, sequence-index template, SCSS imported, listing-page promotion via `<section class="sequences-listing">` in `templates/post-list.html:7-18`). My initial pass said `/essays/` promotion still open; steward corrected (*"The sequences appear above the essay listing now, take a closer look."*) — drift was searching for the words I was thinking (`sequence-index|after-the-reply|featured-sequence`) instead of codebase's actual vocabulary (`sequences-listing` plural-s, `sequences` context field). Project memory replaced with shipped-2026-05-01 record.

- **BMF–MemPalace Connector framework drafted.** Memory file `project-bmf-mempalace-connector-parked.md` + canonical doc at `~/_Dev/CapableMind-AI/docs/thinking/David/architecture/mempalace-connector-framework.md` (steward authorization for placement in their thinking folder). - **Breadcrumb stopgap** for /bio/ + /cv/: pages were rendering through `default.html` with no breadcrumb. Adding `enfilade: about` alone would also place them in the about-enfilade door strip (violating 2026-04-27 "bio is quiet link via Adsum, not in main row"). Added `enfilade-hidden: true` flag to `collectEnfiladeIds` filter in site.hs (with explicit STOPGAP comment); bio.md + cv.md frontmatter declare `enfilade: about` + `enfilade-hidden: true`; bio also gets `enfilade-name: "Bio"` (so breadcrumb reads "About → Bio" not "About → David Glidden"). Saved `project-arc-breadcrumb-spec-pending.md` capturing: spec session deferred AFTER the type-pass per steward's *"this should probably be done after the `type:` audit."* Three architectural smells named for inclusion-or-deferral in that future spec session: `enfilade-order: 0` double-duty (position + hide), parallel `enfilade-*` vs `sequence_*` mechanisms, hardcoded pattern union.

- **5 commits shipped + deployed** (Day 1 evening): `222155c` breadcrumb stopgap; `d254a7f` three sidenotes; `71260c1` Sources spec + first instance; `ebe1af0` bold banished + Vico tightened (Day 1→2 boundary); `c20375d` nginx retire + wrangler maint. ### Day 1 night — typographic audit + nginx cleanup (~22:00-23:30)
|
||
|
||
- **Bold banished across the sequence** ("we banish bold...no shouting here" — steward). 4 bold occurrences found, all converted to italic to preserve emphasis in quieter register: Essay I *it replies.*, Essay V *You saw this happening...* (was bold-italic, dropped bold layer), Essay V *solidarity*, sequence-index *They must be read in sequence.*. Plus 1 missing italic added: Essay V *polis* (Greek term, first-appearance per established convention).
|
||
- **Vico sidenote tightened to ~98 words** (from 155) to resolve visual collision with neoteny sidenote. Drops Harrison book citations (now cleanly absorbed by Sources block) + the inversion-unpacking restatement + "do not wait for new comprehension before acting." Closing line preserved for register-resonant landing. Steward's tightening + my recommendation to restore the closing line (smallest add-back, biggest aesthetic return) → final ~98 words.

||
- **Seb-server nginx deployment retired** ("This is vestigial from when I had no local server environment and was using Seb's server for the staging" — steward). 10 files archived to `docs/archive/seb-server-nginx-deployment/` with original substructure preserved (scripts/, docker/, docs/) + README naming the historical topology + revival path. Makefile cleaned (nginx invocation in deploy-all removed; help-text line removed). `docker/` directory removed (was only Seb-server-related content; .DS_Store cleaned). Honors 2026-04-27 preserve-don't-delete principle.

||
- **Wrangler maintenance Makefile targets added.** `make wrangler-check` (runs `npm outdated -g wrangler`) + `make wrangler-update` (runs `npm install -g wrangler@latest`). Both surfaced in `make help`. Explicit/manual rather than auto-during-deploy because wrangler occasionally ships breaking changes. Wrangler updated globally 4.83.0 → 4.87.0 as part of this work.

|
||
### Day 2 — mine babysitting + body-block sidenote bug discovered (~07:09-14:42)
|
||
|
||
- Morning status check: mine survived the night cleanly (107 → 194 files, 231k → 386k drawers, ~18k drawers/hr through the night, ~19k cumulative).
|
||
- Steward asked "what's been mined" — corpus walk surfaced **NO Loeb classical files done yet** (88 files, 309 MB total). Honest re-projection (drift acknowledgment: *projecting-without-counting* is a recurrent pattern caught both yesterday afternoon and this morning).
|
||
- Steward observed "a whole other day blocked" — acknowledged the cost; named the discipline ("the rest of the work is too important to have to do more than once" — type-pass / Heteronym-Hommage-Tombeau / breadcrumb spec / multi-language spec / L1 connector follow-up all held until MemPalace returns queryable).
|
||
- **Body-block sidenote rendering bug discovered** by steward asking "review the spec for body sidenotes — at the moment we render body sidenotes in italics, but I want to be sure that this respects the spec." Investigation found:
|
||
- Spec §XII.d "Sidenote register" line: **"non-italic** (gloss-register, distinct from voice-block sidenotes which carry italic-from-quote-context)"
|
||
- SCSS `_sidenotes.scss:282` has the comment *"Non-italic — body-block sidenotes are gloss-register"* but is **missing the actual `font-style: normal;` rule**. Base `aside.sidenote` rule sets italic on line 75; without override, italic cascades down.
|
||
- **Cascading consequence:** the three sidenotes shipped (*noia*, Vico, neoteny) are rendering **italic body** (against spec); foreign terms inside (*noia*, *illusioni*, *verum-factum*, *neos*, *teínein*) are rendering **upright** via Bringhurst §3.5.2 nested-italic-flips-upright rule. This is the inverse of the intended typography (intended: roman body + italic foreign-term inserts).
|
||
- **Architectural refactor proposed** when steward asked: *"is the base aside.sidenote rule based on our spec? the exception is the voice block. i want the spec and the scss to be simple, logical, and elegant."* Honest analysis confirmed steward's intuition is right:
|
||
- Bringhurst §3.4.1 cites the *Aldine* convention contextually (italic for prefatory/marginal matter on italic-rich pages) — not as a universal "all sidenotes italic" rule
|
||
- Voice-block sidenote (recognition-of-italic-quote) is the narrower case; body-block (gloss-register) is broader
|
||
- Lex-page density-exception (voice-block flips to roman) collapses cleanly to base in the new polarity
|
||
- **Empirical check:** no voice-block sidenote currently renders italic anywhere in the codebase (lex-cluster pages use density-exception → roman; lares Hearth uses body-block; the After the Reply sidenotes use body-block). Italic voice-block is currently a hypothetical-future use case.
|
||
- Refactor scope: ~5-10 line changes in spec §XII typographic-treatment table + SCSS rule polarity inversion (base = `font-style: normal`; voice-block selector explicitly sets `font-style: italic`; body-block override drops; lex density-exception simplifies)
|
||
- **Refactor decision OPEN at wrap.** Steward asked if architectural refactor is worth doing now or just patch the one-line bug; I proposed both options without forcing choice. Steward had not explicitly authorized either path before requesting context-clear.

- **The body-block sidenote bug discovery + architectural refactor proposal** — most consequential moment of Day 2. Steward's verification discipline ("review the spec for body sidenotes... I want to be sure that this respects the spec") caught a real bug that had been live since the §XII.d Body-Block addition (2026-04-29). The architectural refactor proposal flowed from the bug investigation; steward's intuition about polarity inversion was correct.

**The body-block sidenote SCSS architectural refactor — steward's call between one-line patch and full architectural inversion.**

||
|
||
The bug is live: the three sidenotes shipped today (Essay III *noia*, Essay IV Vico, Essay IV neoteny) are rendering with **italic body + upright foreign terms** (inverse of intended typography per spec §XII.d). The fix has two scopes:
|
||
|
||
- **One-line patch** (immediate): add `font-style: normal;` inside the body-block sidenote selector at `_sidenotes.scss:272-289` (around line 282 where the comment already lives but the rule is missing). Resolves the rendering bug; preserves the existing italic-as-base architecture.
|
||
- **Architectural refactor** (~5-10 line changes): invert the polarity per steward's intuition that voice-block is the exception, not the default. Spec §XII typographic-treatment table edited to clarify italic register is contextual to voice-block-with-italic-quote, not universal default; SCSS base rule changed to `font-style: normal`; voice-block selector explicitly sets `font-style: italic`; body-block override dropped; lex density-exception simplifies. Cleaner long-term; resolves the bug + dissolves the architectural smell of italic-as-base-with-multiple-overrides.

||
|
||
Steward leaned toward refactor (*"i want the spec and the scss to be simple, logical, and elegant"*) but did not explicitly authorize before context-clear. **This is the first decision the next session should bring back to steward.**

The discipline of waiting-for-MemPalace remains intact for the larger downstream work.

The bug affects three live sidenotes. The refactor is cleaner per steward's stated values ("simple, logical, elegant") and per honest architectural analysis (Bringhurst's italic register is contextual to voice-block-with-quote, not universal). The choice is not technical (both work); it's about scope + timing — ship the architectural correction now while the bug is fresh and steward is engaged, or defer to a focused session when more sidenote types pressure-test the new architecture.

Same as the previous wrap: MemPalace MCP server is disconnected throughout. Drawer + diary writes + KG updates skipped. File-based session memory + MEMORY.md index are sufficient for next-Claude orientation. MemPalace surfaces will be filled when the chamber-library mine completes and MCP reconnects — at which point all the file-based memories from yesterday + today can be batch-replayed if useful, OR can simply remain as the source of truth until next interaction triggers them into MemPalace organically.
