Which ARC thread is pulling? I am about to be away from this. Today's afternoon work moved from per-case fix to architectural infrastructure: six EPUB DEFER candidates spanning three pattern-families now durably document what v3 §6 must handle; a substrate-wide Loeb workstream is declared but not yet designed. The chamber methodology has gained shape. What I want to find still pulling on return: an ARC thread (the steward's stated next direction). What I want to find NOT pulling on return: any sense that chamber typology work is unfinished — it is at a clean stopping place. The six defer cases will wait for the v3 §6 build; the Loeb collection will wait for its superior extractor; the unpushed 15 chamber commits will wait for the LFS decision. None of these compete with ARC right now; that's the whole point of today's capture.

Decisions deferred (and why)

v3 §6 Class A/B research-grade EbookLib pipeline build — explicitly deferred per steward 2026-05-18: "build 2, but this may only be one type of case that 2 needs to handle in the future. My vote is to do this and defer, and look at the next batch of 'problem' files." The typology is now richer (six cases informing design); the build remains unscheduled and waits.
Loeb superior extractor reauthor — explicitly committed-as-intent today ("I'd want to reauthor a superior tool to extract the entire Loeb collection once and for all") but design + build are not started. Substrate-wide notes file captures current state + first-pass scope; the actual design session is its own work item.
Push the 15 chamber commits — push blocked on LFS decision since 2026-05-17; today's commit makes it 15, not yet pushed. Don't push without re-checking LFS decision state per yesterday's session memory.

Phase 1 — Brief-pause wake (~11:59)

Wake-up after /clear 4 minutes post-morning-wrap-up. New §3 thread validity gate exercised: outcome confirmed (thread unchanged for three sessions). MemPalace current (0 behind origin/main).
Symmetria init invoked per non-trivial-session guidance.

Phase 2 — Calibre test on Aesthetics (~12:08)

Test answered the literal question: NEGATIVE. ebook-convert EPUB→EPUB normalization produces identical pandoc heading structure to original (5 ATX H1 / 24 H2 / 0 H3; 210-line diff purely cosmetic — image paths, CSS classes, BC/bc case).
Initial interpretation: "the lectures aren't headings in the source at all." Worked through implications.

Phase 3 — Edition identification (~12:30)

Identified source as Polity Press 2018, ed. Ortland, trans. Hoban (Suhrkamp 2009 German Ästhetik (1958/59)). Title page is a JPEG; read directly.

Phase 4 — AZW3 + z-library cross-tests (~12:55)

AZW3 source → Calibre → EPUB → pandoc: byte-identical pandoc output to iCloud EPUB.
z-library EPUB (Aesthetics_Theodor_W_Adorno_z_library_sk,_1lib_sk,_z_lib_sk.epub): different file hash (z-library repackages) but byte-identical pandoc output. Confirms publisher-source-level pattern.
Setext-heading discovery (corrects yesterday's diagnosis): the 21 lectures DO exist in pandoc output as setext-style H1 (Lecture N \n DD Month YYYY \n ===); my 2026-05-17 evening report of "no lecture headings" was caused by counting only ATX-form (^# ) headings. Native pandoc -t markdown emits all 26 as ATX (5 apparatus + 21 lectures). Headings problem fully solved by dialect switch.

Phase 5 — Pandoc-drops-aside finding (~13:10)

Steward: "if these are lectures, there might not be footnotes…" — partly right (Adorno's spoken lectures had no footnotes) but the EDITOR (Ortland) added 599 of them for the 2018 English edition.
Direct XHTML inspection across all 21 cmp*.xhtml files: 599 well-formed <aside epub:type="rearnote"> elements with substantive editorial content. Sample note 1 quoted in _curation/conversions/aesthetics.notes.md.
Steward confirms Apple Books renders perfectly, notes and all — independent confirmation that source is structurally correct. The pandoc-drops-aside-bodies is a pandoc EPUB-reader limitation, not a source defect.

Phase 6 — Steward decision: defer Aesthetics, accumulate typology (~13:30)

Steward: "I think this is a reason to build 2, but this may only be one type of case that 2 needs to handle in the future. My vote is to do this and defer, and look at the next batch of 'problem' files."
Aesthetics named as canonical Polity Press apparatus-rich test case (companion to Calvino's impoverished-NCX canonical case). v3 §6 pipeline now has 2 deferred cases informing design.
Aesthetics notes file + per-author-quirks entry authored. Two files uncommitted at this point.

Phase 7 — First typology scan round (~13:45)

Ran inspect_epub.py diagnostic on three sources: Boethius (Penguin) + Marcus Aurelius (Delphi) + Plato Complete Works (Hackett).
Boethius: 121 class="footnote" markers in separate chapterN-fn.xhtml files; pandoc loses both refs+defs. DEFER. Penguin Watts-era separate-file pattern.
Plato Complete Works: 95 NCX nav points / 0 ATX headings emitted / 13,508 pandoc-class markers. DEFER. Rich-NCX-pandoc-ignores pattern (inverse-shape companion to Calvino's impoverished-NCX).
Marcus Aurelius (Delphi Classics): CSS-class-saturated but structurally tractable. NOT a defer.
Steward correction (drift surfaced): "there are better editions of Aurelius..." The chamber file's source_format: epub_directory frontmatter pointed clearly to source_epubs/Meditations A New Translation.epub — Gregory Hays / Modern Library 2002. I picked the wrong edition without checking chamber-canonical source.

Phase 8 — Hays/Modern Library Aurelius test (~14:00)

Unpacked EPUB directory; repacked to zipped EPUB for the test.
25 ATX H1 + 23 H2 + 2 H3 — body structure preserved. But: 0 footnote refs/defs despite older chamber conversion seeing 13 refs.
Direct XHTML inspection: single end-of-book notes file (Aure_..._nts_r1.htm) with <p class="hanging3" id="cN-ntsM"> linked from body <sup> tags. DEFER. Modern Library 2002 single-end-of-book pattern.

Phase 9 — Loeb verification + steward methodology correction (~14:30)

Verified Loeb corpus at superpower mine/Loeb Classical All Library 537 Volumes/: 509 MB Lingvo DSL + 85 MB resource zip. NOT EPUB.
Initial framing: "out of scope for v3 §6 / separate workstream."
Steward correction: "those scripts need to be revisited within our new conversion methods because they required cleanup recently."
Correction lands: v3 methodology (Tier 3 state-integrity, articulation gate) applies to ALL substrates; v3 §6 is EPUB-specific within that methodology, not the methodology itself. Loeb needs a DSL-equivalent pipeline-revisit within the same methodology.
Drift pattern surfaced: over-confident categorization-as-separation based on quick filesystem inspection — same shape as acting-on-inferred-not-read but applied to taxonomy rather than facts.

Phase 10 — Second typology scan round (~14:45)

Sontag Against Interpretation (Penguin UK): 41 NCX nav points / 0 ATX headings / 1440 pandoc-classes. DEFER. Second confirmed data point for rich-NCX-pandoc-ignores (paired with Plato/Hackett).
Divine Comedy (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition): 110 ATX H1 emit cleanly. NOT a defer.
Sub-finding: Penguin has at least TWO distinct EPUB conventions — older Watts-era (Boethius) vs. contemporary Penguin Classics Deluxe (Divine Comedy). And THIRD: Penguin UK trade (Sontag) which has rich-NCX-ignored shape. Penguin is not monolithic.

Phase 11 — Loeb cleanup history comparison (~15:00)

Steward: "You'll have to look in the recently deleted loeb_classical to compare with loeb_bilingual (cleaned copies)".
Pre-cleanup state at a7f213f^: loeb_classical/ files as 3-line LFS pointer files.
Post-cleanup current _loeb_bilingual/: same 88 files, fully fleshed with chamber YAML frontmatter, LFS-removed, body in-tree.
Cleanup was the LFS migration (752 deletions + 37 LFS pointer strip commits).
What cleanup did NOT fix: structural quality. Body content carries raw DSL entry headers verbatim (e.g. parmenides body opens with -528.015 (PARMENIDES, Testimonia, Part 1: Person (P))). Triage's "zero MD headings" still holds.

Phase 12 — Steward intent declared: reauthor Loeb tool (~15:15)

Steward: "I'd want to reauthor a superior tool to extract the entire Loeb collection once and for all".
Substrate-wide workstream commitment recorded. Parallel to v3 §6 but for DSL substrate. NOT a patch to legacy scripts.

The lectio discipline travels through layers. Today's first finding (Calibre normalisation negative + 21 lectures already in setext form + 599 well-formed asides) all surfaced from staying with the work past the initial diagnosis. Each layer of inspection corrected the prior layer's premature conclusion.
The methodology is unified; substrates differ. v3 §6 EbookLib pipeline for apparatus-rich EPUB is parallel to the future Loeb DSL extractor, not separate from it. Same Tier 3 state-integrity / articulation-gate / forced-classification discipline.
